New nanobots hunt down and destroy cancerous tumors

An army of tiny weaponized robots traveling around a human body,
hunting down malignant tumors and destroying them from within
sounds like a scene from a science fiction novel. But research in
Nature Communications today from the University of California
Davis Cancer Center shows the prospect of that being a realistic
scenario may not be far off.
Promising progress is being made in the development of a
multi-purpose anti-tumor nanoparticle called “nanoporphyrin” that
can help diagnose and treat cancers.
Cancer is the world’s biggest killer. In 2012, an estimated 14.1
million new cancer cases were diagnosed and around 8.2 million
people died from cancer worldwide.
This year, cancer surpassed cardiovascular diseases to become the
leading cause of death in Australia; 40,000 Australians died as a
result of cancer last year. It’s no wonder that scientists explore
every possible technology to efficiently and safely diagnose and
treat the disease.

Good man, had him in ’64 for Freshman Theology and again in Sr. Year for comparative Christian religions. Told a great story about how he used to play the organ at the cathedral in Havana. After Fidel made it more or less clear the direction he was taking Cuba, during the annual Mass celebrating Cuban independence, after the recessional, he played the Cuban National Anthem and caused a riot. He, was sorry for the riot, we all thought it was pretty neat. It is not often you meet a man who feels that he is not worthy to become a priest. RIP Mr. Romagosa, you were one of the special ones.

Their voices may have been the soundtrack of your summer or maybe even your ringtone in the late 2000’s. The punk rock band, Boys Like Girls, hit it big in 2007 and had songs that anyone from this generation can sing from memory. That was proven on Aug. 30th when the band headlined Quadstock and took to the steps of the quad to perform their biggest hits.
Martin Johnson, the lead singer, and Paul DiGiovanni, the lead guitarist, were the only two from the band that performed at the afternoon acoustic set. This was the second concert that the band has put on in the past year and a half.

Kevin is survived by his beloved children, Sean and Matthew McQuillen; his loving nieces and nephews, and his former wife, Elizabeth McQuillen. He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene McQuillen and Arlene (nee Smart) McQuillen.

Anthony Ciorra, chief of the Coastal Restoration and Special Projects branch of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, recently received the New York District Commander's Leadership of the Year Award for 2014.
Ciorra, a graduate of North Rockland High School in Thiells, oversaw the execution of numerous coastal resiliency projects in New York and New Jersey that continue to contribute to the region's recovery from the effects from Hurricane Sandy, according to a press release from the corps.
The award citation reads: "Mr. Ciorra's foresight and mentorship to his teams have enabled the execution of an extremely successful construction program. His numerous accomplishments reflect the highest standards of leadership and excellence in the United States Government and reflect great credit upon himself, and the United States Army Corps of Engineers."

MOORE, JOSEPH M.
Joseph M. Moore, 65, died on September 9, 2014 after a hard-fought battle with ALS.
He passed away peacefully at his home in New Fairfield, surrounded by his family. Born July 18, 1949 in Brooklyn, NY, to Thomas and Teresa Moore, Joe lived many years in Stuyvesant Town, Manhattan. He is an alumnus of Cardinal Hayes High School. He spent many summers at Camp Fordham, working and forming numerous lifelong friendships. Joe earned Bachelors and Masters degrees from Fordham University and Manhattan College.
He followed his passion and pursued a career in teaching. He worked in various NYC schools, including Immaculate Conception and St. Francis de Sales in Manhattan, St. Joseph By the Sea in Staten Island, and St Nicholas of Tolentine High School in the Bronx, where he spent eight happy years as teacher, assistant principal, and basketball coach, proudly leading three Tolentine teams all the way to CHSAA Championships in 1983, 1985, and 1988. Some of these students went on to national professional basketball careers. In 1990, Joe and his family relocated to New Fairfield, and Joe started a career teaching social studies at Somers Central School District in Somers, NY. Joe would remain at Somers High School until his retirement in 2011.
Joe loved life and embraced whatever opportunities came his way. Music was his passion, and he was a lifelong radio fan and supporter of local, live music. He also enjoyed taking guitar lessons for many years but, as self-proclaimed "King of the No-Talent Bums," he dedicated himself to bringing people together through music, whether at home, in the classroom, or in his community, where he was a co-founder of Groovin' in New Fairfield.
Nothing made Joe happier than spending time with "his girls." This devoted husband and father leaves behind his wife of 29 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Moore (Hyde), their daughters Tara Moore and Katie Moore, and their dogs Benjy and Lexie, all of New Fairfield. Joe is also survived by his sister and her husband, Wendy and Ken Weber of North Plainfield, NJ, nephews Brian Weber and Matthew Weber, and niece Michelle (Weber) Taylor and her husband John Taylor. Joe is predeceased by his parents.
A natural teacher and a true people person, Joe was always ready with advice, stories, a friendly smile, and lots of his trademark "Dad jokes;" it's no surprise that so many former students sought out "Mr. Moore" years (and even decades) after leaving his classroom.
Though his life was cruelly cut short by the ruthless torture that is ALS, Joe's legacy of life, love, and music will live on, not only in his family and friends, but also in the generations of students whose lives he was so honored to have touched.
Viewing hours will be at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Monday, September 15 from 4:00-8:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 16th, at 10:30 AM at St. Edward the Confessor Church, New Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, the Moore family requests donations to Regional Hospice of Western CT (http://regionalhospicect.org/), the ALS Association CT Chapter (http://webct.alsa.org), or a charity of your choosing, honoring Joe's memory and spirit. The Moore family would like to express their sincere gratitude to nurse Joanne, aide Tweedy, and social worker Colleen, all from Regional Hospice, for their truly exceptional care, support, and compassion during these past six months.

After tennis last night, the four of us repaired to Kellys for a brew or two.
The subject of Benghazi came up and I was surprised that the other three, who I believe fall somewhere in the conservative half (as opposed to the liberal half) of the spectrum had not seen Bret Baier's one hour Fox special on 13 Hours in Benghazi. Before you trash this email, please at least take a minute or less to read the FOX TEASER for the program below. Note that the teaser has several quotes by the men from the Annex Security Team who went to the embassy and probably saved the lives of about two dozen people under attack at the embassy. They were too late to save Ambassador Stevens.
I believe the program will be re-aired on Saturday (tomorrow) at 10 PM. It is riveting television. It goes into a lot of detail about the events of that night. I encourage you to either view the program or DVR it and to judge for yourself whether the life of Ambassador Stevens could have been saved. If what these men said is true, it also begs the question: where up the chain of command did the order to stand down originate?
If you do view the program and believe that their story is credible, please encourage your friends to view it too.
The media (other than Fox) seems to refuse to follow the Benghazi story.

What the security contractors described as initially a “pretty routine day” became a 13-hour battle.
Five minutes after the attack on the consulate, the team said they were ready to go – but they were delayed by a top CIA officer who told them to stand down.

If the team had not been delayed, they believe things would have turned out differently.

John Anthony Maurer, 91, went to be with the Lord, Friday, September 5, 2014. John was born in NY City, NY on July 8, 1923 to Joseph and Anna Maurer. He graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1948.
John is survived by his loving wife, Jean, of Merritt Island, and five children, Kenneth (Nancy) of Oviedo, Robert (Carol) of Moreno Valley, CA; Edward (Nancy) of Tampa; Richard (Angie) of Merritt Island and Diane of Merritt Island. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Totten of Rockledge in 2013. John is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
John was a US Navy WWII veteran and served with honor in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1946. He worked for NBC, Pan Am, and Johnson Control and was very proud of his contribution to the space program.
In 1964, John was a founding member of Divine Mercy Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts and a founding leader of Pack #333 (now #343) in Merritt Island.
John always kept up with current events and constantly read about space and technology. He remained sharp and interested in the world around him until his passing. John loved his children very much and was very proud of them and everything they accomplished. He will be missed tremendously.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Merritt Island, Saturday, September 20th at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers please donate, in John's name, to your local PBS station or to Divine Mercy Catholic Church of Merritt Island.

Unfortunately, too many students were taking advantage of this to bring outside guests, cut lines, etc., and we've had sooooo many issues, complaints, and even a fight or two.
We did change the on-sale time this year to 1pm from 10am to help with people getting to campus, so we're hoping that alleviates some of the stress and pain, but having students get cut in line by people ahead of them with multiple ID's isn't cool, we've heard you.

When it comes to being at one with the water, New Paltz resident Dan Winfield is a natural.
Whether it was at a pond in his hometown of Tuxedo, New York or competing at the collegiate level at Manhattan College, swimming has always been the one constant that resonated in his life. Last month, this active passion led him to compete and medal in the 2014 Federation of International Aquatics (FINA) Masters’ Swimming World Championships in Montreal, Canada at the bright and flourishing age of 69.

After progressively completing both the 100-meter and 50-meter freestyle after the other events, the 200-meter individual medley was where Winfield struck liquid gold. The individual medley consists of meter swimming in each stroke for 50 yeards apiece.
Winfield began with the butterfly stroke, then progressed with the backstroke, front stroke and concluded with freestyle. After spending four long days of competing every day, Winfield medaled in the 200 Individual Medley event.

“Someone can be 95 years old and they’re swimming relatively fast with a very efficient stroke and you can just tell that they were athletes for decades,” Winfield said. “The body slows up and you don’t swim as quickly as you remember swimming as you were younger. [The championship] had people swimming and diving well up into their 80s and 90s and it was certainly impressive to watch.”

After medaling at the national swimming championship, Winfield has since recently accomplished another feat of athleticism at a local level: The Survival of the Shawangunk Triathalon. This past Sunday, Sept. 7, he and his wife Marianne completed this eight-stage triathalon consisting of biking 30 miles, running 18 miles and swimming nearly two miles. Winfield, the only male competitor in his age group, completed the race in just over seven hours.

Hackers Used Government Spyware to Data-rob iCloud

The leaking of celebrities' photos, most compromising and some nude, from Apple's iCloud storage system shows how silly we can be about nudity and celebrity and what our media thinks is important in the world. These were self-shot photos nude people and nudity is something we can all see in the mirror!

The safest and most secure place for your data is on your own computer's hard drive. The safest place for your office network's data is on a computer that is part of that network. Your data should never be stored on a device you cannot trust.

Now, the nude photos were the “flash fire” over the inet.
If you missed them, (as well you should for a variety of ethical and moral reasons; not the least of which there are some Commandments about these activities), do NOT peek now. Within a day the malware producers had loaded the pic with “crud”. Look now and your computer will get a “social disease”.
Over and above that, now is the time to think about your own computer habits.
Like: “Perhaps the best way to avoid hacked photos of your naughty bits being distributed on the internet would be for you to not put your naughty bits on your iPhone." Comedian Ricky Gervais tweeted this suggestion.
Like: Think before you put stuff in “the cloud”.
Like: Use unique passwords at all sites. Complex ones. Use a manager like LASTPASS.
Like: Use two factor authentication wherever it’s offered.
Now I disagree slightly with the article. Your local hard drive is NOT the safest place for your data. Hard drives die. Murphy’s Law predicts the failure will occur when you can least afford it.
If your office has a network, then you should have a backup and recovery strategy. (I recommend you try and use it regularly to see if you can recover. I lost 2 years worth of work because the corporate IT system was broken and no one checked. After that, now, I keep my own backups.)
If you have two “home locations” or a good friend with a high speed connection to the inet, you can have off-site storage of your data. POGOPLUG or any one of a number of cheap products will work.
In my case, for high-risk stuff, (no I don’t have any “naughty bits”), like my writings, I store encrypted copies in the cloud.
