POSITRACTION: The humanitarian disaster at the southern border

2014-Aug-31

*** begin quote ***

For weeks now, Americans’ eyes have been fixated upon the humanitarian disaster unfolding on our southern border, as some of the least among us seek to enter the United States without permission from what is, after all, a sovereign nation.

We’ve also witnessed outpourings of raw fury as Americans, including many Catholics, vent their frustration with the federal government and Congress, due to the economic and political dysfunctionality bred by the failure of our immigration laws.

As tempting as it is, however, to express anger, Catholics cannot be in the business of allowing public policy to be driven by feelings. That’s at least partly because Catholicism has always taken reason deadly seriously. But we also have a rich tradition of teaching about political questions that embodies principles based upon the Gospel and the natural law: principles that lay Catholics have the primary responsibility, as Vatican II underscored, to apply to complex subjects such as immigration.

Catholic teaching on immigration contains many exhortations to be merciful. Indeed, the commandment to love our neighbor often means we’re required to go beyond the strict demands of justice, albeit not in ways that violate justice. At the same time, the Church articulates a framework for thinking — rather than merely emoting — through the immigration issue in a manner consistent with Catholic concerns for liberty, justice, human flourishing and the common good. And part of this involves affirming that there is a right — albeit not an unlimited right — to migrate.

*** end quote ***

Sad to say, but this is a manufactured political crisis.

The D’s are trying to take the “latino” vote away from the R’s.

The funny part is that the R’s could wrest the “black” vote from the D’s.

Instead of focusing on JFK’s “a rising tide raises all boats”, everyone is focused on “dividing a fixed size pie”.

The understanding of ekky-nomics is dismal.

Lovin loves the challenge at Prospect

*** begin quote ***

As a standout volleyball player at Prospect High School in the early 2000s, Gabrielle Cottrell Lovin played under coach Mike Riedy.

"I learned a lot from him," Lovin said. "He always pushed me to be a better athlete."

Little did Lovin know at the time she would one day replace Riedy as the girls head coach at Prospect.

When Riedy stepped down after 20 seasons to spend more time with his family, Lovin received the job at her alma mater.

"I always dreamed about it but I never expected it," said Lovin, who is also the school's second all-time leading scorer in basketball (1,304 points) and played at Division I Manhattan College in Riverdale N.Y. "But's it's an honor.

"Basketball and volleyball were my two sports, with basketball kind of my No. 1 passion. But we had so much fun in volleyball and that's what I am trying to portray to these girls. I want to instill in them that hard work combined with fun can equal success."

JEMAIL: Dans, Peter E. (MC1957) detected snarky

2014-Sep-01

From Dans, Peter E. (MC1957)

The quote in the Post-traction about Pope Francis was OK up to the point that the writer slammed Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI with the snarky "angels on the head of a pin" dig. It was both unnecessary for the Obama comparison he was making and unfair to someone who will be recognized as one of the greatest and humblest of Popes ever. He will be declared a saint in due time.

# - # - #

[JR: It was in the “end note”.   And, I thought it was a fair differentiation between the two world views. Both men have their own “style”.   For all the homespun humility of Pope Francis, I suspect that he, like most Pope’s, is made of sterner stuff.   Critiquing them is far above my pay grade, but I will observe on the differences.   What I took away from the whole article was summed up by that quote about “People Who Say It Can’t Be Done … … should not interrupt those who are doing it.” — attributed to George Bernard Shaw  And, after all, it is important to know how many angels will fit on that proverbial pin. ]

The addition of vice presidents Joe Lauria and John Hanula provides increased expertise on a variety of water and wastewater issues for municipalities and companies operating in the region, further strengthening the MWH position as a leader in the area.

Joe Lauria has joined the firm as Vice President, and Area Manager - Municipal Water/Wastewater, for the Orange County Market, based in the Irvine, California office. Lauria brings more than 30 years of experience in the municipal water and wastewater business. The majority of those years were spent with Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. (MPI) in locations throughout the U.S. The last thirteen years have been focused in California. In his new role, Lauria will be responsible for directing, planning and coordinating the MWH business development and growth strategy in Orange County and other portions of the Southern Los Angeles Basin area.

A Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, Lauria served as MPIs Technical Director of Engineering Services for ten years and developed their national Capital Project Delivery guidance document, establishing procedures to implement alternative project delivery methods, as well as traditional methods, for water and wastewater projects. After the acquisition of MPI by ARCADIS, Lauria became the National Design-Build Leader. He has been responsible for more than $1.5 billion in capital projects from New York to California, and most recently served as the Project Director of the contractor’s engineer for the Carlsbad Seawater Desalination Facility, the largest seawater desalination facility in the western hemisphere. The work, now 60 percent constructed, has a total design, construction and financing budget in excess of $900 million.

“Joe’s recognition as a successful business leader, practice builder and principal in charge of major engineering projects across the country will greatly strengthen the MWH prominent California consultancy and bring significant value to our clients,” said Dr. Steven Weber, Southwest Regional Manager for MWH in the Americas. “In addition to two decades of work for the Orange County Sanitation District and other major agencies, his vision and leadership on the Carlsbad Seawater Desalination Project is indicative of the type of thinking needed to address complex problems in the arid west amidst record drought. He’s the latest addition to the team that MWH is building to provide creative, value-added solutions and solidify our industry leadership.”

Lauria holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil/environmental engineering from Manhattan College in New York City. He is a registered Professional Engineer in three states, a past member of the Executive Board of the California Association of Sanitation Agencies (CASA), current member of the Executive Board of the Water Design-Build Council (WDBC) and current member of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Committee at the University of California, Irvine.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Robert J. Renehan, 63, of Manhattan, formerly of Sunnyside, former chief attorney of Richmond County Surrogate Court and an educator and author who will be remembered for his knowledge, generous spirit and kind demeanor, died Tuesday in Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan.

Born and raised in Paramus, N.J., he graduated from Paramus Catholic High School.

Mr. Renehan earned his bachelor's degree in government, summa cum laude, from Manhattan College, the Bronx. He received his juris doctor degree from St. John's School of Law in Queens.

In 1977, he was admitted to the bar and began working at Lawyers Cooperative Publishing in Rochester, N.Y. In 1979, he moved to Sunnyside and began his 35-year career in Surrogate Court, St. George.

"Bob was a gentleman who served four surrogates, including myself. His institutional knowledge of the Surrogate Court was unsurpassed. Staten Island has lost a good man," said the Hon. Robert J. Gigante, Richmond County Surrogate.

His work on probate proceedings had been published in the proceedings of the New York State Bar Association Continuing Education Program.

"Mr. Renehan represented all that was good and genuine in today's society. His contribution to the Surrogate Court of Richmond County, as well as his person, will be sorely missed," said Ronald M. Cerrachio, chief clerk of Surrogate Court.

Mr. Renehan enjoyed reading and was especially interested in history and the law. He was a loving uncle to his niece and nephews, godfather to his godson, and was close to his cousins.

I just read this web site trying to find out more news regarding my cousin Guillermo Romagosa (Willy, as we called him). I was very happy that Ms. Maria Khoury was such a good friend of him. He mentioned her name to me many times when I used to speak with him on the phone, almost every day and, as I understand, the last words he said was talking to me while in the hospital.

My name is Raquel Romagosa and I would like to know more about his life besides the things he told me and my sister every day until his passing. My e-mail is {Privacy Invoked} and I live in California.

The last time I saw him was on my way home from Europe that we met in New York and was planning to meet with him this year but had to postpone the trip. so I was so sorry that I could not see him for the last time. He was a great man, very religious and very educated, we lost one of the best.

ENDNOTE: A Concealed Carrier on an Ohio walking trail

Concealed Carrier Stops Attempted Rape On Walking Trail
Posted by Bob Owens on August 30, 2014 at 11:30 am

*** begin quote ***

A woman on a walking trail in Lancaster, Ohio, apparently has her concealed weapon to thank for saving her from two men who seemed to have the worse of intentions.

*** and ***

The men took off and so far have eluded police.

Believe it or not, Mrs. Burns has gotten grief on her Facebook page for not shooting her would be assailants.

That she didn’t shoot them is a personal matter, and none of us know how we’ll respond until we’re in a similar situation. There is thankfully a gap between “legally justified” and “clearly needed to.” Since the men fled the moment they saw the gun, she didn’t feel the need to fire her weapon.

Burn’s dog was no deterrent at all to the two attackers.

This is worth pointing out to those who believe that a small or medium-sized dog will deter criminal assaults.

*** end quote ***

As everyone reading this should know by now I am a self-described peace-loving pro-life pro-choice little L libertarian.

That being said I think there are several good lessons in this story:

* “God made men and women; Sam colt made them equal." — Unknown

In this case, one armed good woman was “more equal” than two bad men and a baseball bat.

* If you draw, you’ve decided to use deadly force.

I agree with the Facebook commenters. She was wrong. (IMHO) Once you’ve drawn, the time for conversation is OVER! The fellow with the BASEBALL BAT and bad intentions should be put down like the “rabid varmint” he is. Assuming his accomplice was far enough away to preclude a good safe shot or heading for parts unknown, then holding your fire is prudent. IF he’s advancing or close enough for a good shot — which means he’s almost close enough to do the Lady harm — then he too should have been dispatched.

* Without the bodies, evidence, or a video, we don’t know if this story is true.

Once again, I have no reason to doubt the Lady’s story. But, in tune with that “french model” commercial, “couldn’t put it on the internet if it was not true”, we must reserve judgment. Even so, this is a good learning lesson about the “facts of life”.

I recognize that the world is a dangerous place. I would personally help “arm” every woman who wants to protect themselves. I will vigorously oppose any attempt to disarm “We, The People” because I have personally met survivors of the Shoah (aka Holocaust), understand that it takes a Gooferment to commit genocide, and “anti-gun” politicians are all about “control”.

“Victim disarmament is the view that it is somehow better to see a woman raped in an alley and strangled with her own pantyhose, than see her with a gun in her hand.” — T.D. Melrose
