FJohn Reinke,

There was a White Castle at the foot of Manhattan College Parkway in the '60s. My father used to take me there when I'd come to campus with him. It was gone by the time I went to Alma Mater (I think it was a Burger King by then).

Tom Veryzer, native of Islip, New York, and former major league shortstop for the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, and Chicago Cubs, passed away Tuesday July 8, 2014 from complications of a stroke according to multiple reports on Twitter. He was 61.

Born February 11, 1953, Veryzer grew up in athletic household. His father Tom was a legendary high school coach, his brother John played basketball at Manhattan College, and his other brother Jim was a minor league outfielder in the Tigers system. Veryzer followed in their footsteps as a three-sport standout (baseball, basketball, soccer) at Islip High School, earning all-league honors in soccer, and the Carl Yastrzemski Award his senior year for the best baseball player in Suffolk County. His standout high school performance convinced the Tigers to make him their first round pick in 1971, selecting him 11th overall.

Good Afternoon All,

Sad news and prayer request from Jack Nelan. Jack asks that we pray for the repose of the soul of his Brother, Vincent. Vincent died suddenly yesterday, 7/11/14. He had been in declining health for the past several months but his death was not expected so soon. Please keep Vincent, Jack and their Family in your prayers as the Family mourn the loss of their loved one. We pray that they find peace knowing that Vincent has entered the Kingdom of Heaven and rests in God's Eternal Embrace. Heartfelt thanks from Jack to each of you for your prayers. Thank you. > MFACEBOOK: Ever a White Castle by Manhattan College? 2014-Jul-06

Dear f. John,

Yes, there was a White Castle on the corner where Manhattan College Parkway intersects with Broadway just north of the subway station. Looking at google maps pictures of the current intersection, I remember it as south of the Burger King, where there is currently an island of vegetation/trees. Definitely in that intersection area and not as far north as BK. This is long before alma mater's dorm was there.

A quick internet search found a reference to it in someone's memoir of the
VCP area in the early sixties...

I have been doing Blog Talk Radio for two years. Love doing the show! It is a quick half hour of Louis expressing his thoughts on political and social issues. The half hour requires 10-12 hours weekly of preparation. Which I enjoy! I was a lawyer. Lawyers research.

Blog Talk Radio advised me this week that I have been elevated to Featured Host. The designation is noted on my blog talk radio page. Additionally, I will be listed picture and all as a Featured Host on Blog Talk’s home page. Do not be impressed. Blog Talk is a big operation and has many hosts. Featured Hosts number about one hundred.

Blog Talk indicated the reason for the designation being applied to the show was two fold. A growing audience and the quality of the subject matter presented.

In Memory of
Jacqueline Schweitzer
June 26, 1929 - July 15, 2014
Obituary

Schweitzer, Jacqueline, age 85, died peacefully at home in Riverdale after a long illness, July 15; she is survived by her loving husband Frederick, daughter Elyse Jenkins, and stepson Manfred. Her childhood and youth were troubled and difficult: poverty, a terribly cruel father, the lifelong sadness from age 16 by the death of her mother, and her sixty-year heroic struggle with diabetes that began at age 25. More than enough to make one bitter, cynical, withdrawn or pessimistic, but Jackie was none of these. Rather, hers was a sunny disposition, friendly, outgoing, exceptionally sociable and communicative, buoyant, always ready with an engaging smile, a dash of wit and humor. Jackie beat all the odds and led a truly valiant life, thanks to her capacity to rise above adversity.

A new chapter in her life began when she met her second husband, Professor Frederick M. Schweitzer, at Manhattan College, where she was a secretary. They married in 1991. She became his assistant and partner in preparing his research and publications on Jewish history, the Holocaust, Israel reborn, and antisemitism. She loved to travel and they traveled widely to participate in scholarly conferences but also to visit relatives and historic sites and to enjoy art, music, and theatre – all over the United States and Canada and Europe. Jacqueline had a fine singing voice and one time aspired to a musical career, but as she wistfully recalled, there was no money for singing lessons. In retirement the couple compensated for their deprivation as "Depression Babies": they joined theatre clubs and the opera guild and devoted many an evening or matinee to drama, musicals, dance, opera, and so on. Some of their happiest moments were dressing up to the nines, driving down to Lincoln Center, dining sumptuously in the Grand Tier at the Met, followed by choice seats for the opera, ballet, or the revival of South Pacific. Music was the one thing she was able to enjoy almost to the end of her life.

Funeral service conducted by Rabbi Stephen Franklin, 1:00 pm, Monday, July 21, Riverdale Temple, 4545 Independence Ave. Burial in King David Memorial Gardens, Putnam Valley, NY

William E. Matthews
Jan. 20, 1936-July 14, 2014
By Star staff | July 16, 2014 - 7:21pm

William E. Matthews enjoyed fishing, especially freshwater fishing in Maine. He took up decoy carving in his retirement, and he enjoyed golf and photography, but “everything else was secondary to his grandchildren,” his son, Dave Matthews, said.

He had two grandsons and twin granddaughters, now ranging in age from their teens to 20s, who visited him and his wife, Catherine, every summer in East Hampton. “He loved to spend time with them,” Mrs. Matthews said.

Mr. Matthews died on Monday at Southampton Hospital. He was 78 and had been diagnosed with brain cancer at the end of last summer.

The son of William H. Matthews and the former Catherine Ramsay, he was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., on Jan. 20, 1936. He grew up there, graduating from A.B. Davis High School and later from Manhattan College. He served in the Army from 1955 to 1957.

He married Elizabeth DeCarlo on Sept. 7, 1957, at St. Catharine’s Church in Pelham, N.Y., and moved with her to nearby Eastchester, where the couple raised their son and two daughters. Mr. Matthews worked for the telephone company, first New York Telephone and later AT&T, for his entire career, eventually retiring as a division manager.

In the mid to late-1980s, the couple followed friends to East Hampton and bought a summer house. When Mr. Matthews retired in 1997, they sold that house and their house in Eastchester and bought one on Atlantic Street in East Hampton. They spent winters in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Mr. Matthews played golf there and at the Sag Harbor Golf Club.

He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where a Mass will be said next Thursday at noon. A second service is planned for July 27 at 1 p.m. at Tutto Bella restaurant in Eastchester.

In addition to his wife and son, who lives in Edgewater, N.J., Mr. Matthews is survived by his daughters, Lynn M. Mahoney of Eastchester and Kathleen Forcello of Guilford, Conn.

His family has suggested donations to Most Holy Trinity Church, 79 Buell Lane, East Hampton 11937, or to a charity of choice.

John Uhran Named 2014 ASEE Fellow
(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)

NOTRE DAME, Ind., July 17 -- The University of Notre Dame issued the following news: John J. Uhran Jr., senior associate dean emeritus and professor emeritus of computer science and engineering at the University of Notre Dame, has been named a fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

The grade of fellow is conferred upon an individual who has been an ASEE member for a minimum of 10 years and in recognition of his or her outstanding contributions to engineering or engineering technology education.

Although his research interests focused initially on communication theory and systems and simulation techniques, more recently he devoted time to artificial intelligence. Uhran maintained a special interest in engineering education throughout his career, providing significant leadership in the development of many undergraduate programs in Notre Dame's College of Engineering.

A faculty member since 1966, Uhran helped develop several laboratories at Notre Dame and published more than 90 technical papers and 30 reports. He is co-developer of NDTran, a software package used to simulate large systems. Before retiring, he began a series of conferences on First Year Engineering Education. The sixth in the series is being held at Texas A&M in August. He has been actively involved in both the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and ASEE, served as an adviser for Tau Beta Pi and is a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Xi and Alpha Phi Omega.

Uhran received his doctorate in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1967. He earned his master's and bachelor's degrees, both in electrical engineering, from Purdue (1963) and Manhattan College (1957).

JFOUND: O’Brien, John F. [MC1973] ABA’s Kutak Award

2014-Jul-19

http://www.nesl.edu/media/news.cfm?newsDetailID=4425

Dean O’Brien receives ABA’s Kutak Award

(Boston, 7/17/14) New England Law | Boston: The American Bar Association has honored New England Law | Boston Dean John F. O’Brien with the Robert J. Kutak Award, given annually to an individual who has contributed significantly toward increased cooperation among legal education, the practicing bar, and the judiciary.

The ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar and Kutak Rock LLP, a national law firm, established the award in 1984, and most recipients have been members of the Section and active participants in its work.

“For nearly three decades, Dean O’Brien has been a valued and influential leader both here at New England Law and nationally in the field of legal education,” said Martin C. Foster ’80, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “Building bridges among legal education, the profession, and the courts, he has helped break new ground and fostered stronger bonds within the legal community. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire New England Law community, I congratulate Dean O’Brien on this well-deserved award.”

Dean O’Brien has been dean of New England Law since 1988 and has the longest continuous service at a single institution of any law school dean in the country. In 2012, he was named one of the most influential people in legal education in a nationwide survey conducted by the National Jurist.

A native of Staten Island, New York, Dean O’Brien received a B.A. in 1973 from Manhattan College; a J.D. in 1977 from New England Law, where he graduated first in his class; and an LL.M. in taxation in 1980 from Boston University School of Law. From 1977 to 1985, he was a senior attorney in the Office of the Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service, heading the northeast region’s tax shelter program.
He joined the New England Law faculty in 1985, teaching Constitutional Law and Federal Income Taxation, and served as associate dean for two years before being named dean. Currently, he teaches Personal Income Tax and in the past has also taught Taxation of Business Entities and Legal Research and Writing. Under Dean O’Brien’s leadership, the law school achieved membership in the Association of American Law Schools.

Dean O’Brien has fostered collaboration among the bench, bar, and legal academy in many ways. New England Law is recognized nationally for attracting a broad range of distinguished visitors, including Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr., and Associate Justices Harry Blackmun, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Anthony M. Kennedy, Sandra Day O’Connor, Antonin Scalia, and Clarence Thomas; Dr. Hans Blix; Attorney General Janet Reno; and United States Senator John F. Kerry. Several of the justices have taught classes at New England Law.

Under his leadership, New England Law established and operates three centers that allow students to work with faculty to provide public service and collaborate with local bar associations and agencies. To promote connections between the bar and the academy, New England Law also sponsors memberships for its students in the Boston Bar Association.

New England Law was founded in 1908 to provide opportunities in law to women who were largely excluded from the profession at the time. Under Dean O’Brien’s leadership, the school has expanded its historic mission of providing opportunities to diverse populations and collaborates closely with the Boston Lawyers Group, which is dedicated to identifying, recruiting, and advancing attorneys of color.

Dean O’Brien will be honored at a special reception during the ABA annual meeting in Boston in August.

Intern Spotlight: Brittany Maggio – Accounting Department
Posted On: 17th July 2014    By: Amelia Merritt

Internship season is upon us once again; when college students around the country trade their sweatshirts for button downs and classrooms for cubicles. The Ad Council recently welcomed nine summer interns into the various departments of the company. To shed some light on what it is like to intern for the Ad Council, we will be featuring one intern each week on Adlibbing.

1. Where do you go to school and what are you studying?

I go to Manhattan College and I am majoring in Accounting.

2. Why did you decide to intern with the Ad Council?

I decided to intern at the Ad Council because it is not just about the numbers and the revenue, it is about making a difference in someone’s life.

3. What do you like most about interning at the Ad Council?

Everything! The people are so welcoming and friendly. I am learning so much. I can definitely use every bit of information I have learned throughout my career.

4. What is the social issue you are the most passionate about?

I am most passionate about the drunk driving issue. There have been multiple outbreaks from my home town where people lost their lives due to this.

5. What is one of your lesser-known talents?

I am great at doing other people’s hair and nails- but I can’t do my own!

Hady Mendez - Franciscan Lay Missioner

I'll let you guys in on a little secret. My hair is falling. More than usual. Not sure if it's stress-related, my diet, or what. Needless to say it's causing me a bit of worry.

In the meantime I went to jail today to get a trim and blow-out. When I was there the women were like "yeah you are def losing hair - you have less than you did a few months ago". Ugh. The whole experience made me very upset and I started to cry. Right there in the jail.

What happened next was unexpected. One of the prisoners wiped away my tears. "No quiero que tu llores", she said. She hugged me and held me until I stopped crying. Then she told me how much it hurt her to see me sad since I'm the one who always lifts her spirits when I visit.

She told me she would give me half the hair on her head when/if I ever needed it. Then we all laughed and hugged.

Thanks God.

Hope to stop the bleeding by taking some vitamin E but it's good to know that my girls got my back.

Paz y bien

Thank you Hady for doing God's Work, for persevering where others will not tread, for keeping God's Light Shining for "Your girls," for bringing hope and a smile to those who may sometimes feel they don't deserve it, for being there for them. It is special to know " They have your Back." Thank you Hady, we thank God for you, the Grace and strength He gives you to do His Work. May God continue to Bless you and those you minister to. But not in the Anglican Church in Australia. The enlightened leaders of that organization are now forcing priests to rat out parishioners who confess to acts which carry jail terms of at least five years.
