POSITRACTION: The babies can be safe

2014-Jul-06

http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/30/world/asia/china-baby-hatches-jinan/index.html?hpt=hp_inthenews

Some stunning news from China.

*** begin quote ***

China 'baby hatch' inundated with abandoned, disabled children
By Connie Young, for CNN
updated 7:56 AM EDT, Mon June 30, 2014

*** and ***

Jinan, China (CNN) -- Along a winding Chinese mountain road dotted with inns and restaurants is Jinan Orphanage, a place of refuge and site for troubled parents to dump unwanted children.

The government-run orphanage in eastern China opened its first baby hatch on June 1, International Children's Day, as a symbolic step to show the country's commitment to improving child welfare.

However, it since proved so popular that authorities have had to introduce new rules to limit the number of babies and children being abandoned.

In just 11 days, 106 children, all with disabilities or medical conditions, were dropped off at the Jinan facility, according to local state media. That is more than the 85 orphans the city accepted the entire previous year.

*** end quote ***

It’s a positive that the babies can be safe.

It’s a negative in that human life is so little valued.

Sadly, that parents find themselves in such desperate circumstances.

And, sad, that people who want children can’t adopt.

Yes, the human race has a long way to go.

A side note, a co-worker said that “they should provide free healthcare to parents”. To which I responded: “tanstafl”. We’re going thru “free healthcare” here. Nothing so expensive as free.

And, if you have a “right”, then someone has a “duty to provide”.

That’s not going to work out so well.

Sadly, humans keep messing up with “social engineering”.

JNEWS: Fife, William A. (MC1967) 2014 Metropolitan Section Civil Engineer of the Year Award

2014-Jul-06

http://www.ascemetsection.org/content/view/136/86/

Metropolitan Section Civil Engineer of the Year Award

The Section's highest award recognizes a civil engineer who has rendered exceptional service to the civil engineering profession, to the Met Section and to the Society. The first award was presented to Emil H. Praeger on May 20, 1953 in the Engineering Societies Building for his design of Pier 57, the only pier in New York City built on floating concrete caissons. A former chief of the Navy Bureau of Design, Praegar also designed a floating concrete breakwater for the invasion of Normandy during World War II.

2014 Recipient:
William A. Fife, P.E.
Consultant
The Fife Group

Bill Fife has over 45 years of engineering experience in aviation planning, design and construction. In the ASCE Met Section, he served on the Board, has been Chair of the Air Transport Group for over 20 years, and founded and chaired the group's annual conference for the past 17 years. Along with his committee members, he has raised over $200,000 for the Met Section Scholarship Fund. He has also been active in senior level ASCE positions at the national level and in T&D I for over 20 years. Most recently, he served as T&D I's Aviation Council Chair from 2006 to 2010.

His energetic commitment and contributions to the engineering profession and the aviation industry have been recognized both domestically and internationally. He was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration Eastern Region (FAA) at the 2003 Airport Conference. He is also a recipient of the Kavanagh Service Award from the ASCE Met Section, as well as community service awards from Professional Women in Construction, the Lighthouse for the Blind, and C. W. Post College.

Bill began his career in June 1967 as an engineering management trainee at the Port Authority of NY&NJ. He led and participated in major planning, design and construction projects while at the PANY&NJ and at AECOM. They include JFK 2000, LGA Redevelopment, Air Train JFK Planning, the N-Train to LGA Planning Study, the Philadelphia International Airport Master Planning Study, and many others. His development and implementation of the peer review process for airport and transit projects has been recognized worldwide. This process saves public agencies millions of dollars each year using "lessons learned" from other projects. He was recognized by Engineering News Record (ENR) as a 2000 Newsmaker for his efforts in developing and successfully implementing the peer review group process. He has also served as the liaison between owners and contractors, solving construction problems and enabling innovation in construction for projects such as the JetBlue Terminal at JFK.

Bill is a graduate of St. Francis Xavier High School and Manhattan College. He also holds Masters Degrees from Brooklyn Poly, now NYU, and Long Island University. He was a Captain in the US Air Force and served his country as a Bio-Environmental Engineer from 1970 to 1972. When not doing engineering, Bill volunteers with many organizations including the ASCE Met Section, Professional Women in Construction, the Sperry Board of Award, Transportation Research Forum, the CUNY Aviation Institute, and Sacred Heart Church. He also enjoys spending time playing bridge, exercising, yoga and traveling with his wife Pat, the former COO of VNA of Long Island. He loves to spend time with his children, Bill, a family practice doctor, Patrick, an attorney, and Lara, a nurse practitioner along with fine grandchildren.

The Vinnie Ferguson: A Classic Old-Timer
By Robert Mladinich on July 3, 2014

*** begin quote ***

Vinnie Ferguson, a quintessential lifelong New Yorker who achieved national acclaim as an NCAA boxing champion and came within a hairbreadth of representing the United States at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome passed away after a lengthy illness on June 23 in the city where he was born and raised and cherished until the end. He was 76 years old.

*** and ***

At his father Ed’s behest, Ferguson was given what he described as “every conceivable test” and released from the hospital with a clean bill of health. By that time, he had transferred to Manhattan College in the Bronx, where he would earn a degree in physical education. He next convinced his hard-nosed father to let him turn pro.

*** and ***

Ferguson never won a title, but he had scores of friends and fans who will never forgot him. He is survived by Sue, his wife of 54 years, son Keith, an NYPD officer, daughter Kyle, his beloved grandchildren Nicholas and Brett, and his extended family.

“Vinnie was a real New Yorker,” said broadcaster Steve Farhood of Showtime. “He was a neighbor of mine for many years, and whenever I’d see him he always told me he was watching me and that I was coming along okay. Talking to Vinnie was always fun because he’d use his hands as if he was fighting. You had to keep your guard up, especially when he was making an emphatic point.

“One of the things that makes boxing so great is the classic old-timers,” Farhood continued. “Vinnie was one of New York’s most classic old-timers. You don’t ever forget a guy like him.”

Carlos Ortiz could not agree more.

“I loved him more than anything,” said Ortiz somberly at the wake on June 25. “There could never be another person like him. He was just….magnificent. We met at 10 years old at the Madison Square Boy’s Club and we were close until just the other day. I lost a good friend…and a brother.”

# - # - # - # - #

We Are America Radio (WAAR) is a station created by our good friend / past guest Wayne Dupree on the internet radio broadcasting site Live365.com. WAAR showcases a select group of conservative internet podcasts from across the nation, including the award-winning Wayne Dupree Show (you remember, the award he took from us!). In addition to his own network, Wayne has been featured on national radio shows such as those hosted by Sean Hannity, Mark Levin and Steve Malzberg, and the television programs of Hannity and Glenn Beck. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Wayne is a frequent speaker at Tea Party rallies across America. In 2014, he participated in a Florida-to-Minnesota bus tour hosted by the Tea Party Express that staged rallies in over a dozen cities in between.

“We Are America Radio is a way to bring on new on-air talent, give them a place to voice their views and let others hear them”, said Dupree. “It happened for me and I want to provide the medium for others.”

Needless to say, this is awesome! Our first show played today at 12:00 PM, with much much more to come. We even brought Vito & Vito with us to WAAR.

Keep listenin'. Keep believin'. and keep listenin' to WAAR!

[JR: In an attempt to be “cute”, I disagree with the “branding”. “War” is no joking matter. AND, the Sheeple already (partially incorrectly) think the R’s are the “War Party”. Up until recently, it was always the D’s. And, with a 40-30% split of the electorate and 50% of the eligible voters who NEVER vote, calling oneself “We Are America” is at best an ego trip and at worst deceptive. At least self-deceptive! I wish out fellow Jasper good luck. And call your attention to his effort. At least he’s doing something. I report this not as a political statement — then I’d make it an ‘endnote’ — but as “Jasper News”.]

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to William H. and Theresa (Pierro) Stolting on Sept. 29, 1944, Bill graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School in 1961. He then joined the Christian Brothers and furthered his studies at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. After leaving the brothers, he completed his degree at Manhattan College. Bill earned an M.B.A. in international business from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1968.

He then worked at Schering-Plough in Kenilworth, N.J., during which time Bill also served honorably in Vietnam.

He married Barbara Rysz of Fairfield, N.J., in 1973. A year later, they moved to Madrid, Spain, and had three children.

Over the next seven years, they embraced the Spanish culture while Bill served as director of marketing for Essex Espana.

In 1981, they moved back to the states and settled in Mountainside. Bill later co-founded in 1987, and was president of Applause, a successful Broadway ticket agency.

He was the beloved husband of Barbara for 41 years; devoted father to Beth, Brooke, Bill and his wife, Annemarie, and proud grandpa to Ella, Will and Caroline. Bill is also survived by his brother, Richard and his wife, Jean, and their children, Jennifer, Laura, and Debbie, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and many, many friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Salvation Army in Bill's memory.

JEMAIL: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) adds a Jasper's Mom

2014-Jul-10

Good Morning All,

I have just heard from Matt as he shares the sad news of the Passing of Matt's Mom, Adelaide Donohue. The loss of this special lady will be felt by and sadden so many. Some of you know that she was part of a long line of Manhattan College Alums. Mother to Four of them and very proud of it. Matt and his Mother had bought adjoining coop apartments in Riverdale’s Skyview a few weeks ago and we moved most of her furniture and bulk items this past Sunday when any of us last saw her. I was on the phone with her the night of July 4th picking up some items at the grocery on my way out to Southampton. I arrived in the house about ˝ hour later and didn’t disturb her per her wishes. I found her in her room the next morning. As Matt says "Needless to say we and especially Mom and myself are in need of prayers."

Matt is very grateful for your prayers and good thoughts. Please keep Mrs. Donohue and her Family in your prayers as the Family suffers the loss of this good woman. We pray that the Family finds peace in the sure knowledge that she is in God’s loving Eternal Embrace in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Below is further information regarding Services.

Thank you. God Bless.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) reports a success

2014-Jul-12

Good Evening All,

A heart felt thank you to each of you from Dave Ellis who has been in our prayers.

Dave says, Thank you all for your thoughtful prayers. They worked!

My second cataract procedure went very well yesterday. For the first time since I was 5 years old, I am able to see without glasses. I attended 9 AM mass this morning, and found that the entire church was alive with vivid colors and so much more in-focus. It was wonderful to see.

God guided the hands of my surgeon in accordance with your prayers. I am grateful that things turned out so well. And I am grateful to have friends who prayed on my behalf.

Take care and God bless you all.

…Dave

Thank you. God Bless.

Rye Native Moves Up To Police Chief In Port Chester

*** begin quote ***

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Richard Conway is one week into his new role as chief of the Port Chester Police Department, which he has been serving since 1986, and he is looking to make some improvements.

*** and ***

Conway graduated from Rye High School in 1976, and then Manhattan College in 1984, where he studied criminal justice and history. After college he taught at a Catholic school in the south Bronx and was a wrestling coach at Manhattan.

*** and ***

“I went from teaching at a Catholic school to being on the street buying drugs undercover every day,” he said. “I was very lucky I had a partner that was very good. We survived in one piece.”

Conway went on to become a sergeant in 1995 and a lieutenant in 1999. During that time he joined the Naval Reserve and earned his master’s degree in public administration from Pace University.

ENDNOTE: Is former Gov. David Paterson serious

2014-Jul-05

http://nypost.com/2014/06/27/the-odds-favor-the-house/

The odds favor the house
By Post Editorial Board
June 27, 2014 | 10:28pm

*** begin quote ***

When New Yorkers approved a ballot measure to open the state to Las Vegas-style gambling last year, the idea was that the benefits of seven new casinos would flow to an economically depressed Upstate.

The Post has been skeptical about betting the state’s prosperity on casinos, especially for depressed areas such as the Catskills. Our warnings may now be coming to pass as two major developers have pulled out of plans to bid for the right to put up a casino in Sullivan County.

*** and ***

On top of this is the all-too-predictable political factor. Turns out former Gov. David Paterson, who found himself in the thick of the bid-rigging scandal surrounding the Aqueduct racino, is a consultant for a potential casino operator.

He’s also the new chairman of the state Democratic Party, which is headed by Gov. Cuomo — whose appointees will select the winning casino bidders.

All of which is sadly appropriate: In casinos, after all, the odds are always stacked against the public.

*** end quote ***

Sure, no conflict of interest there.

Pepuls Republik of Nu Yuk!

I often rant that Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient!

But politicians and bureaucrats are worse.

Remember their Rules of Engagement: Reward friends, punish enemies, and feather your own nest.

Wonder when the Pope will get around to the politicians and bureaucrats now that he’s dispatched the Mafia?
