MFOUND: A man who might have been a Jasper2014-Jun-15http://sotu.blogs.cnn.com/2014/06/14/memories-that-cant-be-erased/ June 14th, 2014 09:05 PM ET Memories that can't be erased By CNN's Susan Garraty *** begin quote *** He needed permission from his parents, and they would not give it to him. Always a distinguished scholar, he skipped a grade in elementary school so he turned seventeen his senior year of high school in 1942. For months he pestered his father and the answer was the same: wait and go to college – you’re too young. The radio crackled with reports that the war was not going well, and John Robert Falvella wanted to fight. Academics were not his only forte, outstanding under the rim and at the free throw line, he received a scholarship to basketball powerhouse, Manhattan College in the Bronx. In October of 1942, still shy of his 18th birthday, his mother and father relented college would wait; he became a Marine. My dad fought in the Pacific. Decades later, he told his three kids that he didn’t “do much” in the war. It wasn’t till at his wake that we found out he was a hero. See, we all always wondered why a man with a career in labor relations was obsessed about the clouds in the sky. He taught and tested us about Cumulus, Cirrus, Nimbostratus. We just considered our dad a weather geek. Out in the Pacific, only men without wives or children were asked to volunteer for what became his job. As covertly as possible, his team on a small boat would go and launch weather- balloons near the islands that would be targets of attacks hours later. Sending the balloon up was kind of like a message to the enemy: “hey guys, we’re over here.” He was promoted in the field to Staff Sergeant. He lived, came home, and was too old to play basketball so he refereed to stay in the game. *** and *** Our dad’s final years had a nightmarish quality in part because he didn’t look or sound “sick.” Before being officially diagnosed, he abruptly retired, but for weeks he would get dressed before sunrise and arrive at his old office. We had to put keyed locks on our doors to keep him from leaving the house. His descent from executive and super dad to wearing adult diapers and the inability to recognize his family was meteoric. He died ten years after his diagnosis. *** end quote *** [JR: I always recognize attendees — or in this case a potential one — on the theory “if it’s important to some to mention in an obit, then we can spare a few prayers”. Or in this case, in a memory. Perhaps, the time at MC was both formative and important to our comrade. Or in this case, Alma Mater wanted him because of who he was. And, imho, WW2 interrupted many many plans. A good many who went never came back and maybe those that did had new priorities. Dona Nobis Pacem] # - # - # - # - # 2014-Jun-15 @ 10:44 |

JHQ: 2014 Manhattan College Reality Retreat 9/12-14/142014-Jun-1923rd Annual Businessmen's Retreat Friday, Sept. 12 - Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014 Life can be a flurry of activity. There always seems to be something to do. Experts tell us that it is critical to take time for ourselves - break away from the flurry of activity and daily routines, so we can reflect, give thanks, pray, meditate, appreciate and think about our purpose in life. The 2014 Manhattan College Reality Retreat provides the perfect setting to do this and seek higher direction while considering this year's spiritual quest, "Here am I. Send me!" (Isaiah 6:8) The retreat provides a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, to network, and to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow alumni - men like you. Many Silicon Valley executives spend thousands of dollars for a similar experience. Plus, you may also avail yourself of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Anointing, and The Eucharist. Check out our website for more details and register to join us in September. You'll be glad you did! # - # - # - # - # http://www.manhattancollegeretreat.com/about/?utm_source=Men%27s+Retreat+2014&utm_campaign=Retreat+2014&utm_medium=email About If you’d like to discover more reasons why you are blessed by God, and also called by Him, please join us for this year’s retreat at the Bishop Molloy Retreat House in Jamaica Estates, Queens, NY. There you will have ample opportunities for fellowship with men like yourself, many of whom have been attending our annual retreats year after year. This year is the 23rd installment of the Reality Retreat, which was started by a group of Manhattan College alumni and friends, many of whom worked in business settings in NYC, who were seeking a way of strengthening their faith and bridging that faith from Sunday Mass into the start of the workweek on Monday morning. Our weekend will feature great speakers, delicious food, enriching fellowship and camaraderie, and opportunities to partake in the sacraments of the Eucharist, Reconciliation and Anointing. JOBIT: Vecchio, Thomas J. [MC1944 RIP]2014-Jun-20http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/pressdemocrat/obituary.aspx?n=Thomas-VECCHIO&pid=171419957 Thomas J. VECCHIO M.D. Funeral Notice Inspired by the book, "The Microbe Hunters", Tom knew as a youth he wanted a life of medicine and science. Always bright and precocious, he was admitted at the age of 16 to the pre-med program at Manhattan College, New York and went on to earn an MD from The Harvard Medical School. Subsequently, he was Board Certified in Internal Medicine and was later inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Physicians. Returning from his Korean War military service, serving as a Company Commander in the Army Medical Corps, he entered into the solo practice of internal medicine in Michigan. He then moved to Kentucky to become Associate Director of Internal Medicine for one of the first HMO hospitals established in the U.S., operated by the United Mine Workers. Satisfying his interest in scientific research, he later joined the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan as Chief of Clinical Research, leading domestic and international drug development programs for a variety of drugs, including: Ibuprofen; Depo-Provera; Minoxidil and Cortaid. His concern for providing family planning opportunities to developing areas of the world gave him the opportunity to speak at the United Nations in 1971 on behalf of population issues, contributing to the availability world wide of Depo-Provera, an injectable contraceptive. He ended his career at the Syntex Corporation in Palo Alto, CA as Medical Director of International Clinical Research. During his lifetime he contributed many medical and scientific articles and was the author of the book, "The Story of Depo-Provera". Tom was born on June 14, 1924 in New York of second generation Italian immigrant parents and died at home on June 4, 2014. Never bored, he enjoyed retirement, traveled extensively always studying the local language and exploring the area's hills, rivers and back roads. He loved music, played the piano, and especially enjoyed duets with his children; and as an accomplished bridge player, achieved his goal of becoming a Bronze level Life Master. Tom was a founding member of the Santa Rosa Symphony Endowment Committee; a member of the Bodega Harbour Literary Club, and as a man of thoughtful and varied insights, a frequent contributor to the Press Democrat's "Letters to the Editor". Those who were privileged to know him will remember his sweet and modest nature; his tender heart, keen intellect, bright and charming wit and his trademark twinkling eyes. Missing him greatly are his wife of 37 years, Lissa A.(Wasleski) Vecchio; his children Karen, Claudia and Theodore (Lisa M.) Vecchio, step-daughter Sarah Wildfang(Ronan Mohan), grandchildren Thomas and James; Kathryn, Alex and Nicholas, and niece Merilee. All were blessed to be loved by him. The family wishes to thank Parent-Sorensen Mortuary for their kindness and support. Published Online in the Press Democrat from June 20 to June 21, 2014 #-#-# Vecchio, Thomas J. [MC???? PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) updates on Kitson, Kevin (MC1970)2014-Jun-20Good Morning, I have received an update from Tom Delaney regarding Kevin Kitson, who has been in our prayers and I want to share Kevin's note and Tom's comments with you. We need to raise the volume for Kevin and his Family as he approaches the end of his Journey and approaches it cloaked in God's Love and accepting with courage and trust, God's Will. Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) # - # - # - # - # Dear Phil, Attached is e-mail from Kevin Kitson whom we have been praying for. As you read, you will see we need to pray for Kevin in the last phase of his journey on earth. Kevin is a boy of the Bronx that I graduated with from Cardinal Spellman High School with and MC. A St.John's University Law School graduate who worked in both the Westchester and Bronx District Attorneys offices before starting a law practice in White Plains with his wife over 25 years ago. He has given to many others in his life. He once told me he gave back to both these institutions because of what the De La Salle Christian Brothers did for him and shaping his life. He is active in many causes to help people including a priest, Fr. Mark Connell, in the tough neighborhoods of Newburgh ,NY with his San Miguel Academy with no tuition requirements for middle school children to break the patterns of drugs, crime and poverty usually in their future. So let us join in prayer for Kevin, his wife and family as Kevin said below and " as always, I have resigned my fate to God's Providence" Thanks, Tom # - # - # - # - # From: Kevin Kitson Date: Wed, 18 Jun 2014 18:50:32 -0400 Dear friends, For more than 6 months now I have attempted to treat my pancreatic cancer and the numerous liver tumors that I was diagnosed with, with potent chemo therapy treatments. I have to admit I never anticipated what going through those treatments would entail. The first recommended rounds of those drugs were ineffectual, and unfortunately the second attempt, with different, more experimental and aggressive, drugs was also unsuccessful. One of the complications from the advanced state of the liver cancer is that a larger tumor has developed pressing on the vena cava, which compromises my bodies ability to normally transfer fluids and impairs my ability to breath, digest, and function. It has been one of the main causes of my pain, and unfortunately has been unaffected by any of the treatments. As a result, I have discontinued any other form of treatment. I have greatly appreciated the support I have received from you my friends, and the many prayers that have been offered for my benefit. I gave this disease the best fight that I had, but some fights can't be won. While this outcome was not unanticipated, it is disappointing, but I have resigned my fate, as I always have, to God's providence. Over the next several weeks I will be continuing to live and struggle with this disease, but I would hope to find the strength and time to have brief visits with you my friends. Please contact Pat via email and she will let you know if and when I'm up to visitors. Thank you again for all the love and support, Kevin # - # - # - # - # 2014-Jun-20 @ 14:03 |

ENDNOTE: Notre Dame not Catholic?2014-Jun-21http://www.cardinalnewmansociety.org/CatholicEducationDaily/DetailsPage/tabid/102/ArticleID/3347/Alumni-to-Notre-Dame-Arrange-for-Departure-of-Trustee-Who-Supports-HHS-Mandate.aspx Alumni to Notre Dame: Arrange for Departure of Trustee Who Supports HHS Mandate June 9, 2014, at 11:15 AM | By Matthew Archbold *** begin quote *** The Sycamore Trust, an organization of University of Notre Dame alumni, is calling on the fellows of the Notre Dame Board of Trustees to “arrange for the departure from the Board of Trustees” of a new member who has publicly supported the HHS mandate. The Cardinal Newman Society broke the news last month that Notre Dame named to its Board of Trustees Katie Washington, who has publicly supported the HHS mandate and criticized the U.S. bishops’ opposition to it. Washington, Notre Dame’s valedictorian in 2010 and an M.D./Ph.D. candidate at the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine and Public Health, contributed in 2012 with fellow Johns Hopkins students to an op-ed which appeared in the Baltimore Sun, saying, “We … strongly disagree with any employer — religious or otherwise —that would refuse to provide full insurance coverage, including contraception, for its employees.” The Trust, in its latest bulletin, calls the appointment “inexplicable, insupportable, and incriminating.” *** end quote *** Seems like Notre Dame doesn’t want to be Catholic? # - # - # - # - # |
