Good that Jim's surgery is not life threatening, however, as Jim and his family have gotten themselves up to deal with it, the postponement comes as a let down. She was born Aug. 29, 1915, in Long Lake, in the “Farm House” on the property owned by her grandfather, John Rice, which is now the location of the Long Lake Arts Camp. Betty graduated from Long Lake Central School and went on to dental hygienist school on Welfare Island in New York City. She met her husband, Guy, at the former Lakeside Restaurant when he was at the Manhattan College engineering program’s Surveying Camp at North Point. They married Oct. 17, 1938, and enjoyed 59 years together. Throughout her life, Betty enjoyed visiting with her many friends, being a homemaker, reading, travel, handwork and volunteering. She was a dedicated life long member of Saint Henry’s Church, with a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. But her greatest love was being with and caring for her family. Betty’s enthusiasm for life, and especially her caring and generous spirit, will be missed by all of us. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Gaetano “Guy” Sylvester, and her sister, Sister Helen Rice, RSM. Betty is survived by her daughter, Helen Kentile and her husband, Bob Kentile, of Long Lake, and her younger daughter, Mary Beth Harris, and her husband, Terry of Hinesburg, Vermont. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Mark Kentile, Dan Kentile, Greg Kentile, Blake Harris and Julia Harris, and her five great-grandchildren, Adam Kentile, Evan Kentile, Nathan Kentile, Megan Kentile and Elijah Aguier. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Long Lake Chapter of the Catholic Daughters of America of which Betty was a charter member in 1949, and a lifelong member of 65 years. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at St. Henry’s Church in Long Lake followed by a Mass of Christian burial. Survived by wife, Mary Betty, and daughters, Mary Jo Kinzie (Jack), Katie, Clare Mukerjee (Subir), Ellen (Steve Unterman), Kris, Molly (Karl Rambo), and Aileen (Paul Heilker); sisters, Margaret Hofmann and Elizabeth Murphy; sister-in-law, Leona Schwartz. Grandfather to Kimberly Mukerjee, Anthony Mukerjee, Sophie Unterman, Eli Heilker, Phoebe Unterman, Ellie Rambo, Madeleine Murphy and Olivia Rambo. Uncle to nine and great-uncle to many more. He grew up in Raleigh, NC, moved to New York City to attend Manhattan College at the age of 16. He served in Korea from 1946-1948 and returned to New York and married Mary Betty Keegan, with whom he thrived for more than 62 years. Though he illustrated for a living, he also painted signs, silk-screened T-shirts, repaired VWs, worked night jobs, and finished his degree at TU, graduating at the age of 50. He loved annual family vacations: Blue Ridge Parkway, the northwest, the outer banks of North Carolina. He celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by sending shamrock stickers to his grandkids. He was too young for the Greatest Generation, so he invented his own generation. He made up George The Bear stories every night when the kids were little. He was up late to talk when teenagers came home, and when they became parents, he was there to get to know his grandchildren. His door was always open to friends and anyone who wanted to drink coffee and talk. He was the best listener ever. When Mary Betty’s health declined, he created a safe and vibrant world for her as long as he could. The man raised by two widows and two older sisters, then fathered seven daughters, was surrounded by the love of those women for whom he always will be, and actually originally was, the most interesting man in the world. He was one of a kind; no definition can capture his uniqueness. Memorial and reception at family home Saturday, May 31st, 2-5 pm. ENDNOTE: HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI by Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) # - # - # - # - # [JR: As is my usual procedure, when I read an “endnote” that I wish I had written, especially one done by a fellow Jasper, I’ll defer to my learned fellow Alum. Please take the time to read it in its entirety. If you do and are not moved, then nothing I would have written would have been better. I’ll quote one small section that I found moving.] *** begin quote *** Two of the speakers were survivors of the bombings. Relatively close to me in age. Setusko Thurlow is today 81 years old. At the time the bomb fell on Hiroshima, she was 13. Yasuaki Yamashita is today 74 years old. At the time the bomb fell on Nagasaki, he was 6. Moderating the event was Clifton Truman Daniel. Daniel is President Truman’s oldest grandson. President Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two survivors are part of the Hibakusha Stories Group. Hibakusha is Japanese for atomic bomb survivors, a bomb affected group. The group is anti-nuclear weapons. It seeks the destruction of all nuclear weapons. Ban the bomb! The personal stories of both survivors were compelling. They were there. Their lives thereafter significantly affected by the bombings. Setsuko Thurlow again was 13 years old and living in Hiroshima at the time. She was an eighth grade student. However, she and other young school children did not attend school any longer. The men and young lads were fighting in the islands. Japan was losing the war. Only young children and women were left in Japan proper. They had to help in the war effort. Setsuko was part of a group of thirty girls who were working at Army headquarters. Setsuko’s job was decoding secret messages from the front lines. She was attending an assembly meeting when the bomb fell. The time was 8 am. Suddenly, there was a flash. Beyond description. All she said of the bombing itself was “…..a real catastrophe.” She added, “No human being deserves that kind of experience.” *** end quote *** [JR: Readers of my blog know that Harry S. is close to the top of my worst Presidents. Specifically he’s #3. And it’s all about Abombing two civilian targets when the Japanese were trying to surrender. Special place in Hell imho for this atrocity. Remember I’m a little L libertarian who believes in the Zero Aggression Principle. This is a national disgrace. And, makes me sad that my country was so foolish and easily deceived. Seems fitting on Memorial Day to ask ourselves some very tough questions. That’s why I say ‘bring the girls and boys home now; we can always send politicians and bureaucrats!’] # - # - # - # - # |
