Touching Reason These Teens Wore Surgical Masks to Prom
By Eliza Murphy | ABC News Blogs

2014 05 18 prom

*** begin quote ***

Hill, 18, has been battling testicular cancer since last September. His chemotherapy treatments have weakened his immune system to that of a 2-year-old's, which means when he's in large public spaces, wearing a surgical mask is necessary to avoid exposure to germs.

Obviously Jarrell's prom was one of those circumstances, just as it was the week prior when the two attended Hill's prom for his high school. This time around, however, the happy couple wouldn't be the only two donning the masks.

"I was talking to my friend Deanna one day about it during class, saying that he and I wore the masks to his prom and she said, 'Wow that's so cool, we should get our whole group to wear them,'" Jarrell recalled.

We hear so much about “Mean Girls”, but never when young adults demonstrate “kool”.

Hope the young man win his battle. With friends like this, he’s got his “army”.

JOBIT: Scholes, Gordon Arthur Jr. [MC1962 RIP]

2014-May-18

GORDON ARTHUR SCHOLES Jr.
Obituary |  Condolences

Gordon Arthur Scholes, Jr, Aged to Perfection, died of liver cancer at his family home on 5-6-14. Per Dad's request, no funeral will be held.

On Saturday, May 31, a visitation (at 4:30pm), followed by remarks (6pm) and party will be held at Southwest Boulevard Family Health Care, 340 Southwest Boulevard, Kansas City, KS. His ashes will be returned to Lake Vermillion in June for another party. If you have a good Gordon story to tell (who doesn't?), please write it down and we will include it in our scrapbook at the party.

Gordon was born to Arthur Scholes and Mary McCabe in his beloved Brooklyn, NY, the middle child between sisters Sue and Mary. He attended Saint Augustine's High School and graduated from Manhattan College, where he was a star singer, Captain of the Glee Club, and champion water polo player.

He served in the US Army as a cook at Camp Pendleton. He married his first girlfriend, Susan, in 1962 and they had three children, Alie, Corey, and Arthur. Later he met and married Judy Strong, the love of his life, and gained another daughter, Sarah. He leaves behind this family as well as his beloved grandchildren, Emma and Ethan Starr, Cassie Martin, Anisa Arrington, and Violet Fain and son-in-law, Kieonne.

He spent his career in sales and marketing for the floor covering industry. He worked for decades with Carpet Corner in Kansas City, proudly making commercials and bringing Rachelle from Carpet Corner into your living room.

Gordon spent his free time cooking for family, Roanoke neighborhood parties, Westport Chilly Day Chili Day, and his infamous KC Star "boys weekend" camping trips. He loved musical theater and played many roles in Penn Valley Park, Shawnee Mission Park and Masabi Community College in Virginia, MN. His civic involvement included being a long- time board member at Southwest Boulevard Family Health Care, ensuring the care of the underserved in Wyandotte

County. He had too many friends to count and considered them all family. Gordon and Judy retired to Lake Vermilion, MN in 2007. The cooking and neighborhood traditions simply moved 12 hours to the North, with their 4th of July party becoming a local legend. They became adventurous world travelers, going to nearly every corner of the world, including Antarctica. In quieter days, they sat at the bay window in their kitchen, watching the birds and the deer and talking about how lucky they were to be together.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the kind and compassionate care of Dr. Sharon Lee and the staff at FHC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to a scholarship fund for staff members to further their education can be made in Dad's honor.

This spring, Mitchell Patterson moved from co-director at the Syracuse Technology Garden to Armory Square Ventures, a venture fund with offices in New York City and on Jefferson Street in Syracuse.

Somak Chattopadhyay, a New York City venture capitalist, is Armory Square Venture's founder and managing partner and picked Syracuse as the firm's base. The fund held its closing in early April and is now focusing on making investments. Chattopadhyay previously was a partner at Tribeca Venture Partners, with more than $160 million under management.

Patterson, a Cicero native and political science graduate of Manhattan College, is the firm's vice president. It fits his passion about the startup scene in Upstate New York.

From his previous perch at CenterState CEO and the Tech Garden, Patterson poured personal energy into launching Startup Weekend and other events supporting entrepreneurs, encouraging their work and helping them develop business networks.

JNEWS: White, Kathleen [MC2014] receives Joseph J. Gunn Alumni Medal

Keansburg Woman Wins Award at Manhattan College
Written by Manhattan College
Published: 18 May 2014

Keansburg, N.J., resident receives Joseph J. Gunn Alumni Medal on May 15.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Kathleen White, a graduate of Manhattan College’s class of 2014 with a B.A. in peace studies and history, and a resident of Keansburg, N.J., was recognized with the Joseph J. Gunn Alumni Medal on May 15 at the Spring Honors Convocation. White will graduate on May 18 at the College’s 172nd Commencement along with some 750 classmates.

The Joseph J. Gunn Alumni Medal is one of the College’s highest undergraduate student honors. The award is given to a graduating senior who has made a significant contribution to the College during his or her undergraduate career.

“In my time at the College, I’ve nominated one or two students nearly every year for the Gunn Medal,” said Lois Harr, director of Campus Ministry and Social Action. “This year, I believed that Kathleen White was the best candidate for the award. Without a doubt, she possesses clear and convincing evidence of character, maturity and leadership, and she brings honor to Manhattan College in all her endeavors.”

Since White’s freshman year, she has remained active in the student organization JustPeace, which spreads awareness and takes action on social issues worldwide. She has served as president for the last two years, and has helped to plan and facilitate several events on a variety of human rights issues, including the usage of child soldiers, as well as the social and political situation, in the Congo, and the Harkin-Engel Protocol to eliminate child and adult labor in the growing and processing of cocoa beans.

Last summer, White was accepted into the Jasper Summer Research Scholars program and received funding to conduct research with a professor on the role of NGOs in South African education. Throughout her four years at the College, she was active in the following honor societies: Phi Beta Kappa (liberal arts and sciences), Epsilon Sigma Pi (the oldest College-wide honor society), and Phi Alpha Theta (history). She also worked with the College’s Campus Ministry and Social Action department, the Center for Academic Success, and the Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith Education Center.

In addition to White’s passion for social issues, she is committed to helping others through the College’s Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience (L.O.V.E.). L.O.V.E. offers service and social justice immersion experiences, and White participated in two trips to Jamaica to work with a community orphanage for children with severe disabilities. She also acted as a mentor and tutor for prisoners in a Criminal Justice Ethics course at Rikers Island.

After graduation, White will spend the next year with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps as an outreach coordinator at the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth in Washington, D.C.

“I’m really excited to be working with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps because it’s an opportunity to focus directly on service and social justice while living simply with other like-minded individuals,” White said.

Alumni Racing Update: Becca Denise at LI Half Marathon

Congrats to Marist Running Alum Becca Denise, seen here still smiling early on in Sunday's Long Island Half Marathon. Becca had a strong debut, running 1:33:35 (7:27 pace) and placed third out of 225 in her age group. She is just getting started at the longer distances, and her future -- as well as many other young Marist women's running alums -- is bright in this sport. She ran the race with Manhattan College track alum Kevin D'Emic, who was a star middle distance man with the Jaspers. Nicely done, Becca!

Haggerty, Jeremiah (Jerry)

Jeremiah (Jerry) Michael Haggerty, 83 of New City, NY, passed away on 5/18/14 at his home in the presence of his beloved wife Kathleen, six children and sixteen grandchildren.

He was born on January 19, 1931 to Michael and Margaret (Callaghan) Haggerty, who had both emigrated from Kilgarvan, County Kerry, Ireland to NYC in 1919. He was predeceased by his father (1934), mother (1986) and his brother Michael (2004).

He grew up on Melrose Ave. and Jerry's mother always called her sons the "best two boys from the Bronx". Jerry attended La Salle Academy in Manhattan on a basketball scholarship. He attended Manhattan College and graduated with a mathematics degree in 1954 and later received his Master's degree from Columbia University.

Jerry also served in the military and was stationed in Japan. When he returned, he was a math professor at Manhattan College.

Jerry met the love of his life, Kathleen Frances Hurley in 1957. They were married on August 23, 1958 and settled in the Bronx. Later, they moved to Valley Cottage, NY and Jerry became head of the Math Department at Tappan Zee High School, where he taught for 35 years. He was also the principal of the summer school program for many years. Teaching was his passion, and he influenced countless students who shared his love of math.

Jerry is survived by his six children: Susan (Thomas O'Connor), Michael (Jody Cuccia), Joan (Patrick Fitzmaurice), Stephen (Angela McQuade), Jeannine (Phillip Ratchford), Barbara (Zannetti) and his sixteen grandchildren: Alaina, Colin, Jennifer, Emily, Daniel, Taylor, Brian, Michael, Katie, Kira, Julia, Conor, Shannon, CJ, Christian and Mia.

Jerry enjoyed home improvement projects, his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers, tending his vegetable garden, and spending time with his grandchildren. His incredible legacy will live on through his family. He set the bar very high for all who were graced to know him. He lived his life by four simple principles: faith, honesty, integrity and family and his children and grandchildren live their lives with him as their role model.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 3PM to 8 PM at Higgins Funeral Home in Congers. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM on Thursday at St. Augustine's R.C. Church followed by interment at Frederick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery, New Hempstead. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 10956 or the National MS Society.

VALHALLA, N.Y. -- Newly elected Valhalla School Board member Anthony C. Amiano is just two years removed from being a student in the district he will now help lead.

Amiano, 20, a 2011 Valhalla High School graduate who just completed his junior year at Manhattan College, was elected Tuesday over incumbent Alan Higgs.

"My hope is to that I can offer a fresh prospective on the Valhalla School District from someone who is a recent product of the system," said Amiano, who is studying communications and political science at Manhattan. "I have always been interested in politics -- attended local board meetings growing up -- and I know it is important to have a variety of viewpoints on boards."

MFOUND: "You Have been gone ..."

You Have Been Gone for Eight Years and Five Months,

*** begin quote ***

It is November of 1980, and
The Philosopher says that Love
is the child of Plenty and Want.
You Have been gone for eight years and five months,

but you are with me wherever I go -
you are with me at Manhattan College;
you are with me in Philosophy 101;
you are with me at the end of the beginning.

I know The Philosopher is right,
and I have known it for almost nine years:
not because I have come so far,
and yet I have so far to go;

not because there is so much to learn,
and I've burned all the midnight oil;
not even because I am Irish,
and our Tribe is a Terrible Beauty:

I know The Philosopher is right, because
you have been gone for eight years and five months,
but you are with me wherever I go:
“J.R.” stands for “Plenty” and “Want”

ENDNOTE: Coronary heart disease non-existent in traditional plant-based diets

2014-May-24

http://www.care2.com/greenliving/we-can-end-the-heart-disease-epidemic.html

We Can End the Heart Disease Epidemic
Dr. Michael Greger
May 9, 2014

*** begin quote ***

A landmark study in 1959 I profiled in my video Cavities and Coronaries: Our Choice, for example, suggested that coronary heart disease was practically non-existent among those eating traditional plant-based diets in Uganda. “Doctors in sub-Saharan Africa during the ‘30s and ‘40s recognized that certain diseases commonly seen in Western communities were rare in rural African peasants. This hearsay talk greeted any new doctor on arrival in Africa. Even the teaching manuals stated that diabetes, coronary heart disease, appendicitis, peptic ulcer, gallstones, hemorrhoids, and constipation were rare in African blacks who eat foods that contain many skins and fibers, such as beans and corn, and pass a bulky stool two or three times a day.” Surgeons noticed that the common acute abdominal emergencies in Western communities were virtually absent in rural African peasants.

*** and ***

Dr. Burkitt sums it up with the analogy of The Cliff or The Ambulance: “If people are falling over the edge of a cliff and sustaining injuries, the problem could be dealt with by stationing ambulances at the bottom or erecting a fence at the top. Unfortunately, we put far too much effort into the provision of ambulances and far too little into the simple approach of erecting fences.” And of course there are all the industries enticing people to the edge, and profiting from pushing people off.

*** end quote ***

What’s wrong with “the system”?

Too many vested crony capitalists who are incentivized NOT to solve the problem.

Argh!
