Residents of Davidson, North Carolina don’t seem to know quite
what to make of a “Homeless Jesus” statue on a park bench
installed outside St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.
The statue is a convincing representation of homeless person
shrouded in a blanket. The figure’s head and hands are covered—the
only thing to indicate that it’s Jesus are the crucifixion marks
on his feet, which you probably wouldn’t notice until you got up
close. And you probably wouldn’t bother getting close since most
of us don’t exactly run at the chance to share the few inches of
empty space on a bench otherwise occupied by what appears to be a
sleeping homeless person.

Yonkers Man Receives Con Edison’s Highest Honor

NEW YORK - Lou Villani, an engineering manager who aided in Con Edison's vital Superstorm Sandy restoration plans, received the company's highest honor, the "Living Our Values" (LOV) award, at a gala on April 24.
This recognition is given annually to Con Edison employees, who exemplify the company's values of service, teamwork, excellence, and concern for the quality of life in their community. Five other employees also were honored.
"Lou is a career employee with more than 32 years of exemplary service at Con Edison. His dedication to his craft and his remarkable work ethic are examples for all employees to follow," said Sanjay Bose, Con Edison vice president, Central Operations.
Villani aided in developing vital storm hardening plans after the ravages of Superstorm Sandy damaged critical company equipment in 2012. As a department manager, he led his area's engineering and construction efforts, enabling his group and as well as other parties to design and re-construct electric, gas and steam equipment within an unprecedented 6-month period. Typical work within the same scope would normally require at least three times the amount of time to complete.
Throughout his career Villani has mastered a range high-level assignments, including managing several new substation construction projects, and work with the Transmission Operations, Facilities and Steam Operations departments at Con Edison.
"I've always had an interest in engineering, so my career at Con Edison is a perfect match for me," Villani said. "To be recognized for the work that I love to do is an exceptional honor. I'm very proud to receive this award," he said.
A professional engineer licensed in the states of New York and New Jersey, Villani is a graduate of Manhattan College, where he received a bachelor's and a master's degree in Civil Engineering. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the New York Interagency Engineering Council, and he sits on the Lehigh University Industrial Advisory Board. The board advises the university on its Energy Systems Engineering master's degree program.
At the LOV award ceremony, Villani was commended for his focus on providing customers with quality, cost effective service in a safe and timely manner. He was also lauded for volunteering to lead a company research and development study on electrical fault currents and the effects on structural supports.
Lou is a devoted husband and father. He and his wife Rita have three adult children: Thomas, Stefanie and Daniel. He and his family are affiliated with St. Eugene RC Church in Yonkers.

ATLANTA, GA.- Walter Richard Byer, 86, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at home with his loving wife Lynne Cooke-Byer at his side in Atlanta, Ga.
He was born Nov. 23,1927, New York, N.Y., the son of the late Edmond J. Byer and Amelia Mooney Byer. He attended Fordham Prep and Manhattan College.
A proud member of the Rosendale and Kingston community for many years he served as the first Police Chief in Rosendale and later worked as a Deputy Sheriff for the Ulster County Sheriff’s Department before going into his own business.
He was a loving brother, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife, Lynne Cooke-Byer; sister, Renée O. Smith; his son, Air Force Veteran and Pilot, John Byer, wife Lisa Byer, and his three children Michelle, Jennifer and Madeline; his daughter, Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Renée C. Byer, husband Paul Kitagaki, Jr., and son, Soccer Entrepreneur, Thomas Byer, wife Midori Byer, and their two children, Kaito and Sho.
Walt proudly attended his son’s soccer matches, was known for his unmatched sense of humor and had an appreciation for music, photography, old western movies, and the outdoors. His favorite moments in life were when he could spend time with his family. He was able to light up the room with his musical ability, playing the accordion, key board and later in life the harmonica. Walt touched the heart of many friends and relatives and his spirit lives on in all he loved.
Please join the family at a special mass at St. Peter’s church in Rosendale, New York at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014.

Some good news at last! Some of you may know that my wife Alesia has been in declining health for several years, and had become bedridden. Alesia had gradually lost her ability to walk, with her left leg almost completely paralyzed.
We had her taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Towson twice in the last year. They kept her overnight, did a few tests, and released her both times, without finding out what was wrong. In March, after she had a fainting spell, she was taken to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The doctors there kept her for several days and did more tests, including an MRI of her head.They found out that she had an unusual type of brain hernia called a tonsillar herniation. Her lower brain was pressing against her brain stem, causing the gradual paralysis, as well as swallowing and breathing problems.
It was a life-threatening condition, so she was scheduled for emergency brain surgery on March 25th. Immediately after the surgery, she had regained full mobility in her left leg. She was scheduled to be released the next week, but suffered a setback when some food got in her lungs and they filled with fluid and she was in critical condition. (This was caused by continuing swallowing problems.)
Alesia was transferred to a rehabilitation hospital last week and is continuing to recover, but progress has been slow because of her long immobility. It's been difficult travelling to see her every day, because we have to take 2 buses and the light rail to visit her, so it takes about 6 hours a day. But if she makes enough progress, she may be able to come home in a week or so. Please keep her in your prayers. Abstract
This paper presents the design, construction and performance testing of a controller capable of protecting the utility from any negative side effect of the interconnection of distributed generation (DG) at customer level voltages. The controller is universal in the sense thatit allows for the interconnection of all kinds of distributed generators:synchronous, induction and those that need a power electronicconverter (solar, fuel cell, micro-turbine,

The controller assures that the IEEE standards 1457 for the interconnection of DG and utility standards are complied. Additionally, the controller cuts the fault current in less than a cycle to prevent the increase to the short-circuit duty of the already installed protection equipment. This is especially important in the case of a synchronous interconnection in locations where the short-circuit power of the substation breakers disclose to its limits. A 25kVA utility grade prototype controller has been built and tested in the lab.

His primary responsibilities include developing and implementing electrical load relief and reliability programs for Manhattan. Prior to this,he was the Distributed Generation (DG) Ombudsman responsible for working with various stakeholders developing cogeneration and renewable energy projects. He has 22years of experience in the power industry. While in ConEdison’s Corporate Planning group, he led a team chartered with developing a Distributed Resources strategy for Con Edison. John J. Galvin II, 62, entered into rest on April 28th, 2014. He was born on October 4th, 1951 in Manhattan, NY to Patricia (Galvin) Stroffolino and the late John J. Galvin I.
A long-time resident of Cortlandt Manor, John worked in Manhattan as a Customs and International Trade Law attorney at Galvin & Mlawski. He received his B.A. at Manhattan College and J.D. at Western New England School of Law. He was actively involved with St. Christopher's Catholic Church for many years, serving as Eucharistic Minister and Lector.
John was an amazing example of courage and strength. He was the rock to his family and beloved by many. John will forever be remembered by his family and friends for his incredible sense of humor and most importantly, his selflessness and loving heart.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Marsha Galvin; his mother, Patricia (Galvin) Stroffolino; his sisters, Patricia Miner and Karen Mattern; his children, Elizabeth Cupples and John J. Galvin III; his grandson, Mason Cupples; and many extended family members.
Visitation will be held from 4-8pm on Thursday, May 1st at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home at 170 Kings Ferry Road in Montrose, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Friday, May 2nd at St. Christopher's Catholic Church at 3094 Albany Post Road in Buchanan, NY.

Sister Catherine O'Connell, OP formerly Sr. Claret, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 64 years, died on April 28, 2014 in St. Martin de Porres Infirmary, Blauvelt. Sister Catherine was 83 years of age.
Sister Catherine was born to Catherine O'Connell and William O' Connell on June 19, 1931 in the Bronx, New York. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on January 1, 1950 from Our Lady of Hope Parish, Queens Village, NY. Sister received the Dominican habit on August 24, 1950, professed her first vows on August 25, 1951, and her final vows on August 25, 1954.
Sister held an AAS in Education from Dominican Jr College, a BS in Education from Fordham University and an MA in Counseling and Psychology from Manhattan College.
Sister's many years of active ministry were devoted to education as a teacher and principal. She taught in the following schools; St. Anselm, Bronx, 1952-56; St. Philip & James 1956-60 and 1970-71; Holy Cross 1960-64; St. Pius, Providence, RI, 1964-68; St. Pius, Bronx, 1968-70; St. Raymond, Providence, RI, 1971-73; 1973-89 teacher and principal; St. Augustine, Providence, RI, 1989-2003; 2006-07, Sacred Heart, Hartsdale, NY 2006-07 tutor.
In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Catherine is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tom McCarthy has just shared some very sad news. Brother Bill Batt, a dear Friend to many of us and someone who has always held a special place in our hearts passed away on Tuesday, 4/29/14. When we have more information regarding Funeral Arrangements from Tom, I will get the word out to you. A sad day indeed. As Tom said, " A great man...." and we are fortunate to have known him. NEWPORT NEWS - Kevin John Fogarty, 74, of Williamsburg passed away Monday April 28, 2014.
Mr. Fogarty retired as a Senior Pharmaceutical Executive at Merck & Co. Prior to his pharmaceutical career he was a manager at the CPA firm of Price Waterhouse & Co.
He graduated from Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
He was an avid fan of the University of Notre Dame, the alma mater of his children.
A devout Catholic, Mr. Fogarty was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church of Williamsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Fogarty; brother, Jack Fogarty; and son, Gregory. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Nancy Marie Fogarty; his son, Glenn of Clark, New Jersey; his daughter, Lynn of Williamsburg; sister, Maureen Gilbride of Connecticut; and brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Joan Lynch of Winston Salem, North Carolina.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am at St. Bede Catholic Church followed by interment in Williamsburg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23188.

McMahon, Sr. Anne Thomas
Sr. Anne Thomas McMahon, formerly Elizabeth McMahon, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, for the past 78 years, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 in St. Martin de Porres Infirmary.
Sr. Anne Thomas was 97 years of age. Sr. Anne Thomas was born to Thomas McMahon and Hannah McKeown on October 24, 1916 in New York City. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on August 15, 1936 from St. Luke's Parish, Bronx, New York.
Sr. Anne received the Dominican habit on July 3, 1937, professed first vows on July 5, 1938, and final vows on July 5, 1941. Sister held the B.A. in English from Manhattan College and the M.A. in Theology from Providence College, Rhode Island. Sr. Anne Thomas' many years of active ministry were devoted to education as a teacher and administrator. Her ministries included: St. Dominic's School, Blauvelt, NY, 1938-1941; St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, Bronx, 1941-1949; St. Benedict's School, Bronx, 1949-1956, St. Anselm's School, Bronx, 1956-1960; Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Goshen, NY, 1960-1967; Fr. Lopez High School, Daytona Beach, Florida, 1967-1968; St. Peter's School, Liberty, NY, teacher/principal, 1968-1970; St. Catherine's School, Blauvelt, NY and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Tappan, NY Coordinating Principal, 1970-1971, and Dominican College, Blauvelt, NY, Faculty, 1971-1976. She ministered in St. Dominic's Home as Supervisor of Household, 1976-1979, She served the Congregation as Director of the Diet Kitchen, 1979-2004.
Due to failing heath, Sister retired to the St. Martin de Porres Infirmary where she remained until the time of her death.
In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Anne Thomas is survived by her sisters-in-law Nelida (Nellie) and Jeanne; nephews Terrence and James; and friend Maureen Young. Among her Sisters in Community, is her dear friend, Sister Katherine Downing. She was predeceased by her sister Mary Voet and brothers Joseph, James and Thomas McMahon.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend services at: St. Dominic's Convent, 496 Western Highway, Blauvelt, NY. The wake will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 9:00am - 10:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 3 at 11:00am with burial to follow at St. Dominic's Convent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic, Blauvelt, NY

Kara Husband-Zimdahl has hit for the cycle of sorts when it comes to softball having played at the high school, college, Empire State Games and professional levels. Now it’s time to pay it forward.
Hutch-Tech will be the beneficiary of her life experience as she begins her first season as a head coach in the Buffalo Public Schools. She teaches physical education K-8 at Loraine Elementary, School No. 72 on South Park Ave. in Buffalo.

Husband-Zimdahl, now 34, was a tremendous athlete for Holy Angels graduating in 1998. She played three years of basketball and softball before missing her senior year in both sports with an ACL tear.
She played softball for four years at Manhattan College, playing on a Metro Atlantic Athletic Confernce championship team and going to the NCAA tournament as a freshman.
For six weeks last summer she played in the Italian Professional Softball league for Collecchio, in the province of Parma.

The troubled Lakeway Regional Medical Center has annunced a Hospital Management Agreement which will lead to a new team taking over the day to day running of the facility. This follows a thwarted attempt to sell the facility to a larger operator.
Here is the April 30th Press Release — "The Board of Lakeway Regional Medical Center (LRMC) has signed a multi-year administrative services agreement with QIR (QHR Intensive Resources) for management support services. The announcement of the agreement was made by Frank Sossi, legal counsel and acting interim chair of the hospital Board of Managers, and Mickey Bilbrey, president of QIR.
Under the terms of the agreement, QIR will furnish an on-site CEO and CFO management team, bringing expertise and resources to strengthen the hospital’s ongoing operations and enabling it to continue providing high quality patient care to the community. The hospital’s Board of Managers will retain full control over governance responsibilities.
“The Board carefully considered its alternatives before choosing QIR,” said Mr. Sossi. “Having engaged QIR last year for consulting support, we got to know them, valued their expertise, and decided QIR would be a good fit to help the hospital grow. We believe that QIR will be an effective partner in strategically moving LRMC forward and improving hospital performance.”
QIR has significant experience working with community hospitals and health systems. Mr. Bilbrey noted that QIR has provided LRMC with financial and operational advisory services over the past several months and understands the specific situation at LRMC: “We look forward to expanding our role to oversee hospital management and working with the LRMC medical staff and employees in meeting the healthcare needs of the Lakeway community.”
Joyce Hein, interim CEO, will continue to serve in this capacity while a national search for a permanent CEO is conducted. Tom Marshall has been named permanent CFO. Mr. Marshall has 25 years’ experience in financial executive positions within the healthcare industry. He is a graduate of Manhattan College and a CPA."

Frank, competing for Villanova in the early sixties, was the World’s Fastest Human and held the World Record in the 100 yd dash and 60 yd dash. I remember him as a gentleman and a person who shared his knowledge of sprinting with his fellow runners. Rest in Peace Frank. Brother William and I had a special bond. He was a believer and follower of Track and Field and gave me very important advise during my freshman year. He was a person who cared about us all as individuals first - as is the hallmark of all in the Manhattan Community. I reconnected with him a few years ago, and we relived how important he was to me as a young adult. We have lost a truly special person. Rest in Peace my friend.
