Gilligan brings military experience to classroom

You may know Brian Gilligan as a teacher and commander in the Navy Reserve, but neither of those titles are what he started working toward earlier in life.
Gilligan was born and raised in northern New Jersey, so it isn’t surprising that he continued his secondary education on the east coast at Manhattan College where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in government politics.
From there he went on to work in the for-profit sector, worked at four different companies, joined the military later in life, earned three master’s degrees, and finally became a teacher at Morton College. His journey in life hasn’t always seemed so clear, but he’s happy where life has taken him so far.
“I wouldn’t think of being anywhere else at this point in my life. I enjoy the students and my interactions with them and their enthusiasm,” said Gilligan.
Although he’s satisfied with life now, he once had a strong desire to somehow give back to the community. He found the outlet for these desires by joining the Navy Reserve Intelligence Program in 1991. There were no available positions for commissioned officers at the time, so even though he had a master’s degree, he spent about three years as an enlisted member before becoming a commissioned officer.
“I was looking for different ways to give back to the community at large and trying to identify ways to balance my life between my full-time job and my family and it just seemed like an exciting direction to take in my life even though I was a little bit older at the time to see if I could contribute something to the at-large community,” said Gilligan.
Through his years of service, he has taken on a number of assignments, been promoted to commander, and had two overseas deployments. The first one was to the UK for nine months. It took some time for Gilligan to get used to the situation of being uprooted from his daily life, but he got used to it.
“United Kingdom certainly wasn’t as threatening or as dangerous as you know, being in a war environment as in Afghanistan, but the job responsibilities were what allowed me to be engaged in what we were accomplishing there,” Gilligan said.
The deployment to Afghanistan in March 2013, because it was considered a war zone, required Gilligan to undergo more combat training before being deployed. There were difficulties with the computer systems going down and access was somewhat challenging, but he describes the experience as life affirming and enlightening.

Gilligan met his wife back in New Jersey in 1986, two years before moving to the Chicago area. They dated only six weeks before deciding to get married that year in March. Gilligan and his wife were together for 11 years before having their son Kyle. He’s a responsible family man as well as an active part of his local community.
“I’m on the library board at Mt. Prospect and I’m involved in my church, St. Zachary’s Church in Des Plains, so I just try to be connected to the community, some volunteer activities that I’m interested in pursuing,” Gilligan said.

I can say that his actions are evidence of the same old “crony capitalism” with a tremendous hubris of his world view. I’d assert that Libertarians are very charitable and want everyone to have the same freedom that they wish for themselves. By the way, the Obamas have done very well for themselves while in the White House. As do most Presidents. That, per se, speaks volumes.]

Mehnaz M Afridi, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of the Manhattan College Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith Education Center, was mentioned in a Huffington Post blog post by Rabbi Joshua Stanton entitled, “Inter-Religious Studies: A Field of Its Own.”
The post is a recap of the Jewish Theological Seminary’s recent panel, “Future of Judaism and Islam on American Campuses.”
Jennifer C. Edwards, Ph.D., assistant professor of history, recently published the article “My sister for abbess: fifteenth-century disputes over the Abbey of Sainte-Croix, Poitiers,” in Journal of Medieval History 40, no. 1 (2014): 85-107.
Additionally, Edwards presented “Medical and Spiritual Healing in Medieval Miracle Stories,” at the Rutgers University Medieval and Early Modern Studies Colloquium: The Healing Arts Across the Mediterranean in March 2014.

William Merriman, Ph.D., professor and dean of the School of Education, was appointed to serve as the United Nations (UN) representative for the international education honor society Kappa Delta Pi (KDP). As part of this role, he will receive UN non-governmental organization credentials, attend briefings for UN partners, and report to KDP chapters on UN matters relevant to the mission of KDP.
Shawn Ladda, professor of kinesiology, recorded a segment for a new show on National Public Radio’s (NPR) KCRW Santa Monica, Calif., “Press Play” on the Olympic Games and the disparity of the number of men’s events to women’s events.
School of Engineering
Civil engineering major Casey Barrett ’15 was awarded a position to work on stormwater harvesting at the prestigious 2014 ReNUWIt Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program at Stanford University from June 16 - Aug. 15. Selected from among 180 applicants, Barrett will occupy one of 14 positions funded by the National Science Foundation.
Jessica Wilson, Ph.D., assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, received the American Water Works Association’s Second Place 2014 Academic Achievement Award for best doctoral dissertation. This award encourages academic excellence by recognizing contributions to the field of public water supply.

Helene R. Tyler, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics, will teach Group Theory at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from May 21 - June 13 as part of the University’s Volunteer Lecturer program. Funded and administered by the International Mathematical Union and the U.S. National Committee for Mathematics, the program’s goal is to build capacity in mathematics and mathematics education in developing countries. This is Tyler’s fourth year participating, and she has seen several high-performing students from RUPP go on to pursue graduate degrees abroad.

Commentary: Masiello can still be a role model at Manhattan College

Steve Masiello called me for a feature story I was penning two Octobers ago. With his Manhattan College basketball team preparing for the rapidly approaching 2012-13 season, Masiello graciously granted me about 20 minutes of his day, telling me about his method for successfully rebuilding the Jaspers.
Near the end of our conversation, I told him I grew up rooting for Manhattan — that the Jaspers got me hooked on college basketball.
“That’s great. I love to hear that. I really love to hear that,” Masiello responded before telling me he wanted to catch up more the next time I visited Riverdale on a break.
His invitation was sweet. It was unsolicited and certainly unnecessary. Above all, it seemed genuine.
And that’s what has nagged me during this whirlwind of a week that’s seen Masiello go from Manhattan to the University of South Florida and from University of Kentucky graduate to college dropout. I don’t know what to believe. I can only imagine how Masiello’s Jaspers must feel.

Manhattan College faces a tough decision: dismiss the coach who resuscitated the Jaspers basketball program or retain the accused liar who had his bags packed for South Florida. I can’t fault the school whichever way it leans, at least with the details that are currently public knowledge. It’s not clear-cut like Binghamton University’s 2010 buyout of Kevin Broadus, who recruited players below the school’s academic standard and then pressured teachers into awarding undeserving grades.
College basketball provides second and third chances to its student-athletes. If not for second chances, Jordan Reed might not be the star of our school’s basketball team; Cleanthony Early, who starred for nearby Sullivan County Community College, would not have led Wichita State to a perfect regular season. The list continues.
Because — and only because — Masiello had proven to be a sturdy role model before this fiasco, he deserves a second chance from the school he carried out of obscurity. Assuming he’s not years shy of completing his communications degree, he can lead by example and graduate from Manhattan College — Eddie Jordan has created a precedent for this at Rutgers. Masiello’s players will see a coach determined to right the ship, and he will undoubtedly feel indebted to the program that afforded him a second chance.
At least that’s what I’d like to believe, just as I wanted to believe his catch-up invitation and commitment to Manhattan College.
Maybe the second time’s the charm.

Thanks for sending the video about the operating room of the future. It was incredible. Like many pioneers, they are disparaged. I hope their work holds up and is quickly implemented. When I think of what my wife went through with high power indiscriminate chemotherapy, it makes me shudder. I hope they are able to get the same results with breast cancer targeted therapy. I also have personal reasons for hoping for their success in treatment of Parkinson's.

A memorandum dated Nov. 17, 1995, crossed my desk in February.
An old-time stamp showed it had been sent via fax(!) by Consolidated Edison Inc.'s public information office, and its author was nominating a young utility executive for Crain's New York Business' annual 40 Under 40 feature: John McAvoy, 35, manager for the Indian Point 2 nuclear-power plant in suburban Westchester County. The precocious Mr. McAvoy had graduated from Manhattan College at age 19 with a bachelor's degree in engineering, the memo reported, and the nuke he oversaw produced almost one-fifth of the electricity used by Con Ed's millions of customers at the time.
It's hard to tell from the notes scribbled in the margins why the editors at Crain's back then hadn't chosen this young man, who seemed to be going places. (I'm guessing it's because he didn't work in the five boroughs of New York City, one of the cardinal rules of our annual 40 Under 40 search these many years.) Naturally, I showed a copy of the memo to Mr. McAvoy, now 53, when he visited our office last month as the newly elevated chief executive of Con Ed. He laughed. I shrugged. Hey, it's not like any editor in the long history of Crain's has ever claimed we always get it right.

An update on John Nason. Geroge Skau spoke with John at the end of last week and John continues to improve. His spirits are high and he and Jeanne will be down in Florida for at least a couple more weeks. Rehab continues and John is doing well with that. Jim Smith tells us his visit with the Infectious Disease Doctor went very well. Certain steps have been taken such as removing the Intravenus Pic Line which is a major step and it has to heal but overall Jim continues improving. SPARTA, NJ- Senior Megan Lepore may be finishing her time at Sparta High School, but no one could say she is in a senior slump. Last year she organized a club to support Operation Smile, the international children's medical organization that provides free surgeries for children and young adults born with facial deformities. Craig Merrill, Lepore's Field Hockey coach, agreed to be the advisor.
Last year she raised enough money for five children to receive surgery to repair their cleft palates. This year Lepore has raised enough money to pay for another eight surgeries.
Lepore organized fundraisers such as Jeans Day, a clothing drive and a Spin-a-Thon. She was also able to get support from local businesses.

In addition to this endeavor, Lepour is a part of Girls on the Run, Peer Development Program and Students Taking Action in our Community, a newly formed service club at the high school. She excels academically as well as a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society.
Of Lapore Merrill said, "She is self-motivated. She is a 'doer' not a 'talker'. She is probably one of my top five students of all time "
Next fall Lepore will be heading to Manhattan College. While they do not currently have a chapter of Operation Smile, Lepore considers starting one. She wishes to continue her work with the organization. "I hope to one day volunteer and go on one of their medical missions. That would be awesome."

Anderson, Robert T. "Bob"
Robert T. "Bob" Anderson, 88, of Palm Coast, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014, at his home. Robert is a World War ll veteran, having served overseas as a combat medic with the 76th infantry division, during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded an E.T.O. ribbon with three (3) battle stars. Robert was honorably discharged with rank of Sergeant. In 2012, Robert traveled to Washington, DC with other World War II veterans to visit war memorials and other historic sites as part of the Volusia Honor Air Flight 9- operated under the auspices of the Deland Rotary Club. In December of 2013, Robert was appointed a "Chevalier" of the Legion of Honor by The Consulate General of France. The Legion of Honor was created by Napoleon in 1802 to acknowledge services rendered to France, by persons of exceptional merit.
Robert grew up in the Riverdale and Fieldston sections of the Bronx, New York City, and was a graduate of Manhattan College. Robert was musically inclined and enjoyed listening to the 'oldies' of the 30's and 40's. Robert is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Mary; four children, Robert Jr., Melissa Anderson, Thomas Anderson, and Mary Heise; a sister, Barbara Anderson; four grandchildren, Rachael, Samantha, Kelly and Jillian Anderson. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014, 11:00AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 4600 Belle Terre Parkway, Palm Coast, FL. Inurnment will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the American Cancer Society in memory of Robert T. Anderson. AGE: 89 • Warren
Frank P. Valenziano died very peacefully at his home in Warren, New Jersey on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, surrounded by his wife, Mae, and his five children. Frank was 89 and was born in Staten Island, New York, the son of Angelina and Domenic Valenziano.
Frank received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College and his M.S. in Civil Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology. He was a World War II Navy veteran on the USS Midway as an Airborne Electronics Specialist. Starting as a young engineer, he rose to manage Intellectual Properties and retired after 34 years as Manager of Patents and Licensing for Interpace Corporation. To his credit, he has multiple patents to his name. Following his retirement, he was a partner in a successful manufacturing business until his full retirement in 2005. Frank was an extraordinary man who guided his family to push harder, do better, and to ultimately give back to others. Education and integrity were the core of his being which he stressed and impressed upon his kids, in-laws, and grandchildren.
He was married to the partner of his life for 64 years, Mae, and they were quite a team. He is survived by Mae; his older sister, Sarah Boyko; his five children, Carl (Kate), Philip (Maureen), Frank J. (Stephanie), Angela Ross (Scott), and Mark (Lori). He has 14 outstanding grandchildren who cherish him as a grandfather and mentor, and three great-grandchildren.
Frank's wish is a cause very close to his heart. Please raise the volume for our littlest Jasper, Luke. Luke suffered a Seizure and was rushed to hospital. He is stable and will be kept in hospital for observation and to make sure he remains stable. It has been more than two years since Lukie last suffered a Seizure and we pray that he remains stable with no complications. Please keep Luke, his parents Heidi and Peter, and his Grandparents George and Ann in your prayers. It is frightening to say the least when these things occur. We know that this little fellows indomitable spirit will help him prevail. Thank you. God Bless.

Good Evening All,
John Reinke has shared a request with us from Friends of his who ask for our prayers for the 4 year old Grandson of Friends. Young Blake is 4 years old and has difficulty hearing and he is scheduled for surgery on Both ears tomorrow, Tuesday Morning, at 5:30 AM. His Mom is concerned with the fact that he will have to be put out for the procedure. Please pray that Blake's surgery goes well without complication and that his hearing is restored. Please raise the volume for Blake and keep his Parents and Grandparents in your prayers. We pray for a quick and complete recovery. Thank you. God Bless.

Mr. Harvey Holzberg, 76, died on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, in Stonebridge at Montgomery in Skillman, N.J., with his family by his side.
Visitation will be on Friday, April 4, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, 205 Rhode Hall Rd., Monroe Township, NJ 08831, (732)521-0555. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Fernwood Cemetery, Jamesburg, N.J.
Mr. Holzberg was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to New Jersey in 1986.
After serving for four years in the United States Marine Corps, he earned a bachelor's degree from New York University and a master's degree in business administration from the Bernard Baruch School of the City University of New York.
Mr. Holzberg was the former president and chief executive officer and president emeritus of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., serving from 1989 to 2009.
Throughout his 40-year career, he earned a reputation as a hospital administrator who engineered the transformation of struggling hospitals into thriving institutions. He was a champion of marrying academic medicine and clinical excellence.
Mr. Holzberg was also proud of his tenure as senior vice president of Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., where, under his mentor George Adams' tenure, they increased community access to quality health care by developing the Sunset Park Family Health Center, the nation's largest federally qualified health center.
Mr. Holzberg was a fellow of The American College of Health Care Executives. As chairman of the National Council of Teaching Hospitals, he served on the Executive Council of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He was also chairman of the University of Medicine and Dentistry Board of Trustees. Additionally, he was a founder and past president of the National Association of Community Health Centers and the New York Association of Ambulatory Care Centers.
A noted expert and published author, Mr. Holzberg was an adjunct professor of UMDNJ-RWJ Medical School's Department of Environmental and Community and Medicine. He also served on the adjunct faculties of New York University and Manhattan College.
Mr. Holzberg was the recipient of many awards during his career including the Medical Executive Award of the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey, the Israel Peace Medal-State of Israel Bonds, Distinguished Service Award-Melvin H. Motolinsky Research Foundation and the Torch of Liberty of the Anti-Defamation League.
Mr. Holzberg played golf, mostly as an excuse to smoke the occasional cigar and enjoy the 19th hole.
His real passion, however, was skiing. He started skiing at the age of 50 as a way of spending time with his family on the weekends. He skied at almost every ski resort in the western United States, but his favorite place was his home at Windham Mountain, New York. Skiing with his children, grandchildren and friends was his greatest joy.
He was predeceased by his parents, Julius and Dorothy Holzberg, and his son, Eric S. Holzberg.
Mr. Holzberg is survived by his wife, Janice Chiantese; son, Dr. Adam S. Holzberg and his wife, Dr. Michelle Salvatore, of Moorestown, N.J.; daughter-in-law, Agnes Holzberg of Eastchester, N.Y. and step-daughter, Christie Chiantese and her husband, Dale Pinchot, of Yardley, Pa.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Andrew, Olivia and Grace, Sasha, Andrei and Alexei, Lily, Gabriella and Trent, and sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Irwin Stein.

Frank Ambrose, of Hoboken, NJ, passed away suddenly on March 31, 2014.
He was 60 years old.
Frank is survived by Susan McLaughlin Smyth, his five children and two sons-in-law; Danielle Smyth Stiles and Morgan Stiles, Christie Smyth DiStefano and Doug DiStefano, Caitlin Smyth, Tara Smyth, Timothy Smyth; and by his five grandchildren; Dylan, Connor, Logan, William and Chloe. Frank took immense pride in his children and their many accomplishments.
Frank was born in Manhattan on November 11, 1953 and raised in The Bronx. As a native son of The Bronx, Frank graduated from St John's Kingsbridge Grammar School, All Hallows High School, and Manhattan College.
Frank was an outstanding athlete, excelling at track at All Hallows. In high school, he played football for the Bronx Spartans. He came to the attention of Manhattan's legendary football coach, Larry Kelly, and was recruited as a running back. Frank captained the 1974 Jasper team demonstrating the leadership that would be evident throughout his life. During his working career Frank returned to his running roots and competed in many road races, including multiple New York City and Boston marathons.
Frank will be remembered as a man of remarkable generosity, loyalty, and selflessness - and at times, a devilish sense of humor. He had a wide circle of friends who knew that spending time with Frank would bring a smile to their faces. Frank was always willing to assist friends and family, at any time, for any reason. He embodied the best compliment that could be paid to a man in The Bronx, for he was known as a stand up guy.
Frank was predeceased by his parents, Frank Smyth (Co. Cork) and Mary (O'Donnell) Smyth (Co. Leitrim). In addition to his children and grandchildren, Frank leaves his cherished brother Pat and sister-in-law Eileen along with his nephew Michael Smyth and niece Colleen Smyth Orth. He leaves many loving cousins and his adoring nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Frank's life will be held at Failla Memorial Home in Hoboken, NJ from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Wednesday April 2nd. The Mass will be held at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church at 10 AM on Thursday, April 3rd.Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY. Valet parking is available in rear of memorial home off Sixth Street.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to All Hallows High School, 111 East 164th Street, Bronx, NY 10452will be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted in Failla Memorial Home, 533 Willow Avenue, Hoboken, NJ 07030.

Dallas Museum of Art appoints Shyam Oberoi as Director of Technology and Digital Media
DALLAS, TX.- Robert Stein, Deputy Director of the Dallas Museum of Art, today announced the appointment of Shyam Oberoi as the Director of Technology and Digital Media. Currently the General Manager of Collections Information Services at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Oberoi brings extensive experience in IT, software development, digital imaging and online collections. He will assume his new position on April 14, 2014.
“I’m very pleased that Shyam Oberoi will join the DMA next month as our Director of Technology and Digital Media, and I’m excited to bring him to Dallas,” said Stein. “With his significant expertise and his successful track record of managing complex projects, I am confident that under his direction the DMA will make major strides in reaching audiences with new digital initiatives while maintaining the Museum’s tradition of excellence online.”
In his new role at the DMA, Oberoi will lead the Museum’s digital and technical initiatives as well as the staff in IT, software development, digital media, and the photography and imaging departments. He will manage a diverse range of projects, many of which will chart the future of digital media and technology for the Dallas Museum of Art as they seek to positively impact the field of museums. Oberoi will also chair the Museum’s web team and lead projects to digitize the Museum’s permanent collection, creating one of the most sophisticated online art collections in the world.

Oberoi joined the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006 and for the past two years has served as the General Manager of Collections Information Services in the Digital Media Department. Earlier, he managed a department responsible for the archiving of the museum’s image, audio and video content and the licensing and distribution of these materials. Prior to his appointment at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Oberoi served as the Information Technology Officer at Gabriel & Co., an international fashion designer and manufacturer in New York; a software engineer at Thor Technologies, Inc.; and a software developer with the New York City Bar Association.

A special CBE faculty presentation, led by the Ernst and Young Inclusiveness Recruiting Group, was among the highlights of Adamson’s visit. The presentation, “How business schools can better prepare its graduates for a diverse environment,” was led by Ken Bouyer, EY’s Americas director of inclusiveness recruiting. Bouyer reflected on his first years at EY after completing his undergraduate studies at Manhattan College, and said that while he was excited about joining the company, he faced challenges being one of just a few African Americans among his cohort.
“Recruiting diverse people is important, but it doesn’t necessarily address the environment, which can present challenges around retention and advancement,” said Bouyer, who emphasized the important role faculty can play by celebrating diversity in the classroom, as well as the value of having different people from a wide array of perspectives working together.
Bouyer said that in order for business schools to cultivate inclusive leadership, faculty must emphasize the business imperative of diversity, work with students on developing interpersonal skills that will help them navigate new environments and different cultures and increasing personal awareness of one’s own diversity and biases. Both he and Adamson also emphasized the importance of embedding these concepts throughout an entire organization for true impact.

Tom Perkins Has a Fascinating, Radical, Un-American Voting Plan
The venture capitalist—who compared progressivism to Kristallnacht—wants to disenfranchise non-taxpayers and give wealthier voters more votes.

Venture capitalist Tom Perkins is on his own personal version of the Rolling Stones' Bigger Bang tour: an aging star getting his kicks one last time with a barnstorming tour across the states. First he said that discussing income inequality is just like Kristallnacht. Then he sorta-kinda-not-really apologized.
And now for his latest trick:
"The Tom Perkins system is: You don't get to vote unless you pay a dollar of taxes. But what I really think is, it should be like a corporation. You pay a million dollars in taxes, you get a million votes. How's that?"
This anecdote is being reported fairly uncritically, but it's clear that Perkins seems to have been, at least partly, joking. After leaving the stage at the San Francisco event where he put forth the plan, he told a reporter, "I intended to be outrageous, and it was."

[JR: He may be joking, but I’m serious. Only taxpayers should vote since they are the ones footing the bill. “Democracy is two wolves and sheep voting on what’s for dinner!” Besides if voting made an difference, “they” wouldn’t let us do it. ]
