Kukodas share love of basketball

*** begin quote ***

The game of basketball is such a prominent part of Lisa and Matt Kukoda’s lives that not only did the couple include a basketball in some of their engagement pictures, but aspects of the game could be found as a secondary theme to the couple’s August 2012 wedding.

*** and ***

The couple had lost contact as Matt went to St. John Vianney for high school and Monmouth for college, while Lisa attended Red Bank Catholic and Manhattan College, respectively.

*** and ***

Just prior to the couple’s wedding, Lisa was named the girls’ head coach at Manasquan, a Shore Conference powerhouse that was coming off of a Tournament of Champions title.

*** and ***

“I don’t think that I would have been able to endure a 6-18 season without her guidance, her support and keeping me even-keeled,” Matt said.

“She reminded me, that although everyone wants to win now, we’re building for three, four years down the road. It’s a young group that we have now. Conversely, they’re trying to win now. She can help me see the bigger picture, and I can help her stay in the moment as she prepares to compete in the Shore Conference Tournament final, and then hopefully make a run in states.”

Stephen M. Gregory
Obituary

*** begin quote ***

Stephen M. Gregory, 97, of East Greenbush and formerly of New York City and Bradenton, Fla., entered eternal life peacefully at Evergreen Commons on February 28, 2014.

He was born in Blissville, son of Michael and Pauline (Mandryk) Gregory. He attended Bryant High School where he excelled in track and was offered a scholarship to Manhattan College. He also played the violin with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra. In his early years of high school, he became a ham radio operator, something he enjoyed throughout his entire life. His call letters are W2IFM and he was known as "The Iron Fireman." He took pride in the fact that he worked all countries and established many friendships. Instead of accepting a track scholarship to Manhattan College, he took the exam to be a firefighter for the city of New York, and on May 4, 1938 was appointed and served with honor.

He became a lieutenant in 1963, and retired in 1973 after 35 years of service. He married the love of his life and best friend on June 16, 1940. Together they lived a storybook life! Upon his retirement from the fire department, Steve worked for the New York Yankees as manager of equipment for the umpires. During those years he and Helen spent many happy times with the Yankees organization. When anyone visited the Stadium, Steve "took care of them." He entertained presidents, actors, actresses, government and religious leaders and just plain "simple folk" showing them around the inner workings of the Stadium. Steve was always interested in serving others.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife of almost 74 years, Helen

JOBIT: Fanelli, Anthony [MC???? RIP]

2014-Mar-04

http://www.silive.com/obituaries/index.ssf/2014/03/anthony_fanelli_80.html

Anthony Fanelli, 80
Staten Island Advance By Staten Island Advance
on March 04, 2014 at 1:15 PM

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Veterans’ activist Anthony Fanelli, 80, of Rosebank, who sustained traumatic brain injury and partial paralysis when he was struck by a car as he crossed Hylan Boulevard at Bay Street last Veterans Day, died of his injuries Saturday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.

The driver of the 2012 Acura that hit him on the night of Nov. 11 was an 83-year-old woman, said police, who have not released her name.

About an hour before the accident, police said Mr. Fanelli had been involved in a fender-bender at the same intersection. He made a left turn onto Hylan in his 2012 BMW and collided with a 1998 Honda sedan, but no one was injured, police said.

After that happened, Mr. Fanelli wanted to go to the nearby Dunkin’ Donuts for coffee, and headed back to his car, said his friend, veteran John Sobchik of Willowbrook, who got there first and bought the two cups of coffee.

“I waited and I waited,” said Mr. Sobchik, who called his friend’s cell phone and got no response. “Then I saw flashing lights at Hylan and Bay Street, and I figured something had to have happened to him.”

Mr. Fanelli was in a coma for several months after the accident, first at University Hospital and then in the ventilator unit at Richmond Center for Rehabilitation and Specialty Healthcare in Stapleton, said his son, Carlo Pecorari. He was released last Friday, “and was home for only one day” before he was brought back to University Hospital, where he died.

Mr. Fanelli was born and raised in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, graduated from Stuyvesant High School, and attended Manhattan College in the Bronx. He moved to the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn in 1964, and next to Lawrence, N.Y., where he lived for over three decades. He moved to Rosebank 15 years ago.

A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Fanelli served two years of active duty and four years as a reservist in the 1950s, family said.

With the exception of his first job at a brokerage house on Wall Street, Mr. Fanelli operated a family-owned furniture business, which began as an interior design storefront in Bensonhurst, and grew into Tuscan Imports, based for 20 years in Hempstead, L.I. The company purchased furniture and raw materials from Italy, and finished the products at its Long Island factory. Mr. Fanelli dissolved the company when he retired 15 years ago.

“He was always calming, patient, and very organized,” said his son, Carlo. “He was loving, caring, and funny, and always there for us.”

“If you had a crossroads in your life, he had a way of making you feel confident of the choices you were making on your own,” added his son, Anthony Fanelli. “He celebrated our successes, and picked us up from our failures.”

Mr. Fanelli enjoyed reading and following the news, especially domestic politics, but “his relaxation was doing for people -- veterans’ work was his life, especially raising money for disabled vets,” said his son, Carlo. “This was a 79-year-old man who was not sitting on the sofa.”

Mr. Fanelli was an active member and fundraiser for the United Staten Island Veterans Organization (USIVO); Huttner-Pasqualini Post, American Legion; Catholic War Veterans Post 1934, and the Halloran Memorial Chapter, Disabled Veterans. He was grand marshal of the 2012 Staten Island Memorial Day Parade.

After Mr. Fanelli was injured, James A. Haynes III, executive commander of USIVO, described him as “a great guy, a humanitarian,” adding, “He’d help everybody -- he’s dedicated to people.”

Mr. Fanelli also was a member of the Gov. Dongan Assembly, Knights of Columbus, and an active supporter of the National Lighthouse Museum.

He was a parishioner at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Rosebank.

In addition to his sons, Carlo and Anthony, surviving are his wife of 50 years, the former Savina DeGaetano; his brother, Michael, and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.

People say the corporate world has no soul. Corporations don’t give a rat’s behind about their employees especially after they’re gone. And the flip side is employees are just there to get a paycheck. They do what it takes and if they’re lucky they have a job that pays the bills, while they can’t wait to get the heck outta there. Well I’m here to tell you it ain’t always so. I mean we have a great example right here in North Carolina.

One has to feel confident that science will have a prominent seat at this roundtable. After all we are talking about our environment, clean water and biological integrity and human safety and this all falls under the umbrella of North Carolina’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources headed by McCrory appointee John Skvarla who holds a B.A. in economics from Manhattan College and a J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) add two more requests

2014-Mar-06

Good Evening All,

Bob and Noreen Mattis ask for our Prayers for Katie Kelley. Katie is the niece of Noreen’s college roommate. She is a young woman in her early 40s who has lived with cystic fibrosis for her entire life. Twenty years ago she had a double lung transplant and has done well until recently. She now has rejection of the transplanted lungs as well as kidney failure. She is in critical condition in a hospital in Seattle and her prognosis is poor. Please pray that she and her family have peace and acceptance of whatever is God's will for Katie. The family also have a son with cystic fibrosis, and they have suffered so much pain and anxiety thru all these years. We need to raise the volume for Katie and her Family during this so difficult and painful time. Please keep Them in your prayers as we pray for God's Peace and strength to touch and embrace this Family during their time of need.

Our prayers are also needed for John Nason '52, a dear and good friend to many of us . John and Jeanne Nason have been on Vacation in Florida. You may recall that they visited with Jim and Kathleen Smith when Jim was in hospital. John tripped, fell and broke his hip. They did not do a Hip Replacement, the MDs inserted some screws and devices and he remains in Hospital in Florida John is in good spirits and I am sure in some discomfort. We pray that his recovery is swift and complete. Mike McEneney has spoken with John and as more information becomes available I will keep you posted. Thank you. God Bless.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) refreshes two requests

2014-Mar-07

Hello All,

I have just spoken with John Nason and he is doing well. His spirit, as always, is up and although time spent in Hospital does not a vacation make, he and Jeanne are making the best of it. His surgery went well, they have him up and around and in about an hours time he will be transferred to Rehab. John sends his best and thanks to each of you for your prayers and good wishes. As you know, John and Jeanne visited with Jim Smith in Hospital a week or ten days ago and now John ended up in a similar position. Please keep John in your prayers and send good thoughts his way.

Jim Smith I think is home but in a Rehab Facility. I will find out and let you know. Please keep Jim in your prayers as well. Thank you. God Bless.

The "Wall Of Hate" poster created from the four pages of hate comments summarized in one section of TobakkoNacht. All the collected comments are real examples taken from files collected over the years on the net. During my book events I hang a 45" x 30" poster of this (along with a selection of other posters) on a wall for people to examine as they are waiting for the event to begin.

2014-Mar-07 FROM GOOGLE+ Michael McFaddenShared publicly12:35 PM The "Wall Of Hate" poster created from the four pages of hate …

I hadn't realized this would be picked up by Jottings... I guess that's how a Google+ mailing works though! LOL! In any event, a brief explanation: At one point in "TobakkoNacht -- The Antismoking Endgame" I explore the social harms caused by the antismoking movement and also look at the calm acceptance of the buildup of an atmosphere of hate. I was puzzled at first as to how to share the extent of the problem effectively: anecdotal examples are usually and justly brushed off as simply being meaningless outlier "anecdotal examples" pulled from a few kooks.

I decided to break up the more scholarly rhythm of the chapter by grouping a representative set of brief examples I'd seen in my years of internet reading into a condensed solid mass squeezed without spacing into two sets of facing pages -- a sort of Orwellian Bible of "Twor Minutes of Hate" readings. Then when it came time to begin doing public presentations and readings I took those four pages and converted them into a 30" x 45" wall poster for people to examine, along with other posters, as a group for an event was gathering. Three, four, or five "tales" are anecdotal examples: when those tales multiply into the hundreds they become something else.

This "Wall Of Hate" was the end product:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/hzc1cuv6wknzrjh/MasterHateFINALC45x30%20%28Custom%29.jpg

and together with the Author's Preface at http://TobakkoNacht.com it explains a lot about why I felt there was such a need for this book and how it grew out of my Peace Studies efforts during my years at Manhattan College. Those interested in reading further can borrow the book from MC's library or order one through Amazon if they wish.

2014-Mar-07

Good Evening All,

Ellie Calabro, a great friend to many of us, asks for our prayers for Fellow Jasper Kevin Kitson, Esq '70. Kevin has been diagnosed very unexpectedly with Pancreatic Cancer. He is in a lot of pain and the Chemo is difficult for him. As Ellie points out, Kevin has been a great Alum and friend of the College. Please raise the volume as we pray that his cancer is brought under control and that treatment is successful. Keep Kevin and his family in your prayers.

From Jasper Jottings we have received information that Fellow Jasper Bernadette Kelley Finch '95 BS, has undergone testing at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. Please keep Bernadette and her Family in your prayers as we pray that the results are as Bernadette would want. Many others have reached out to her with Prayers and good wishes and we are thankful to them. Thank you. God Bless.

We Can Only Imagine What Might Have Happened If There Wasn’t Glass In Between This Mom and the Man Who Left Her Little Boy Nearly Brain Dead
Feb. 21, 2014 3:24pm Liz Klimas

*** begin quote ***

For five years, Loubna Khader kept inside her pent-up rage and anguish at the man who left her 2-year-old son nearly brain dead after he chose to drive drunk.

On Thursday, the Texas mother went to the Tarrant County Jail to confront the person who hit her family’s car and changed their lives forever.

*** and ***

“I’m never going to forgive you. I’m never going to forgive you for what you did to my son,” Khader yelled, smacking the glass with a dull thud.

“Never.”

*** and ***

Though he pleaded guilty, KHOU reported that he is awaiting trial for more serious charges that could come with a lifetime prison sentence. Richardson had been charged in other states with driving under the influence prior to this incarceration.

*** end quote ***

[JR:

Why was he out from the other multiple convictions?

She isn’t forgiving? Trapped in a cycle of hate that will destroy her. Can’t imagine what she’s going thru, but she has to release herself from his prison.

And, now as a fat old white guy injineer, I wonder why cars don’t have a simple challenge to start them. Surely we can invent some type of a puzzle that a drunk can’t figure out. (Personally I try an calculate a cube root. I can’t it’s time for cab.) Would seem to be an easy challenge to invent. Maybe a car that senses alcohol in the interior and then challenges. Or just a challenge to everyone. Like simple simon. Repeat a string of 6 colors after a 15 second delay? Mistakes make the interval longer. Must be an app for that!

We’re supposed to be so smart. But we penalize “innocent” drinking and first time offenders, when it seems the real damage is done by repeat problems. Who are driving around as we sit here!

Argh!]
