Tammy Wood Miller ’91 on a path of helping those with special
needs, including her six adopted children.
Tammy Wood Miller ’91 took her education degrees and made them a
way of life. As the mother of 11, six of whom are adopted special
needs children, she spends her days putting her skills to the test
with those she loves the most.
“It all kind of began with Manhattan,” Miller, a second-generation
Jasper, says. “I met Dr. Merriman, and he mentioned adaptive
physical education, which modifies the physical education program
to fit the physical or educational challenges of the student. I
got so interested in that.”

Although many ask with concern about their biological children
getting lost in the mix, she says “I feel our family is so close.
I feel like they have just benefited so much from being a part of
this.”
She explains how older siblings have helped with the younger
children, and many have taken on service projects of their own.
Take for instance, 10-year-old Teagan, who gives up her recess
time to help out in the special needs pre-K class.
“She comes home so excited about all the accomplishments that the
kids have,” Miller says.
Miller does not look at being a mom of 11 as a sacrifice but calls
it a “true blessing to the people that are serving.”
“I take pride in helping the next generation get to see what
service is.”

Francis "Frank" Jerome Connolly, age 75, of Mobile, died on Friday, February 21, 2014.
He was born to the late Luke and Delia Connolly, May 16, 1938 in Astoria, New York. Frank graduated from St. Agnes High School in Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Manhattan College where he was commissioned into the Air Force upon graduation. He also graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master of Public Health and from the University of Kansas with a PhD in Radiation Biophysics.
After serving 20 years in the Air Force as a Medical Physicist in Radiation Therapy, he retired from the military. Frank continued his work in this field as a civilian and was employed at Harper Grace Hospital and taught classes at the Health Care Institute in Detroit, MI; Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital in Binghamton, NY; and Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, MS. He retired from Singing River Hospital but continued to consult for Singing River Hospital and Providence Hospital in Mobile, AL.
Frank is survived by his wife of 51 years, Maryanne Mallins Connolly; his four children, Suzanne (Len) Austin, Michael (Ami) Connolly, David Connolly and Christine Connolly; his sisters, Sr. Barbara Connolly, GNSH and Sr. Patricia Connolly, GNSH. He is predeceased by his brother, Michael Connolly. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Marisa, Derek, Luke and Alec Connolly and Ian and Audrey Austin; many other loving relatives and friends as well as three loving family dogs.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Mobile. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice .

The Catholic Church gave the UN credibility by associating with it. Popes have addressed the General Assembly. The UN is mentioned in official documents as a potential instrument of world peace.
It is now difficult to challenge its diktats. We are hung by our own petard.
Why did the hierarchy not recognize the obvious, i.e., that the UN was founded as, and continues to be, an instrument for world secularism and socialism?
It is not too late to say: "We do not consent. We withdraw from the UN and we will speak the truth about it."

President Elected to ACCU’s Board of Directors
Brennan O’Donnell elected to Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities Board of Directors.
Brennan O’Donnell, president of Manhattan College, was recently elected to the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities Board of Directors. O’Donnell was elected along with five presidents of member institutions at its Annual Meeting earlier this month in Washington, D.C.
ACCU’s Board oversees the work of the association to encourage and facilitate the sharing of ideas and cooperative efforts among its member institutions, and to promote the positive work being done at its member colleges and universities. The terms of the new presidents begin immediately and run until 2017.
“We are delighted to have these Catholic college and university leaders on our Board,” said Michael Galligan-Stierle, Ph.D., president and CEO of ACCU. “They bring insight, experience and wisdom that will help the association advance its programs and services. I look forward to working with all of the members, new and returning, as we continue to proclaim the good news of Catholic higher education.”
The Board also announced the selection of a new class of three officers, who began terms at the close of the 2014 member business meeting.
“The ACCU plays a vital role in keeping Catholic higher education strong and vibrant,” said Brennan O’Donnell, president of Manhattan College. “I am honored to do my part by serving on the Board.”
O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College and assumed the role on July 1, 2009. Prior to working at Manhattan College, he served as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. O’Donnell also spent 17 years at Loyola University Maryland, where he was a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, director of the university-wide honors program.

Obituary
WAPPINGERS FALLS - Anthony Frank "Tony" Sileno of Wappingers Falls, NY passed suddenly into the arms of God on February 23 at the age of 74.
Tony, who grew up in Newburgh, was the son of the late John Guy & Vera Squillace Sileno. Tony will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends. We will miss his love and compassion and especially his humor.
Tony is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years Anne (O'Leary) Sileno and their four children: Maria DeLoughry (husband Tom), Christina Hopper (husband John), Terri Sileno, and Andy Sileno (wife Suzanne). He is greatly missed by his six grandchildren on whom he showered his love and patience: Ryan DeLoughry, Kevin DeLoughry, Allison Hopper, Elizabeth Hopper, Samuel Sileno, and Olivia Sileno. Tony is also survived by a brother, John, of Fort Meyers, FL, and many nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of Manhattan College with a BS in mathematics and attended St. John's University. An information systems professional, Tony worked for a number of companies in the Hudson Valley, retiring from the Mid-Hudson Medical Group several years ago.
A devout Catholic, Tony served St. Martin de Porres for 43 years as a lector, cantor, and choir member and donated his time in his retirement to maintain the computer lab of the parish's school. Tony was also a 4th Degree and Past Grand Knight of Council #7551 of St. Martin de Porres and he also sang with the IBM Mixed Chorus.
Tony was a life-long Dodgers fan, who did not hold a grudge after the team left Brooklyn.
All who knew Tony, including the gang who gathered at the bagel shop after morning mass, will miss his warmth and his love of jokes and puns that often brightened someone's day.
Friends are invited to join Tony's family for Calling Hours on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 form 3-8 PM at the Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. The Kof C #7551 will be having their Memorial Service at 7PM during the Calling Hours. 2014-Feb-24Good Morning All,
Some good news to report regarding Jim Smith. Mike McEneney spoke with John Nason. John and Jeanne visited with Jim on Saturday and John tells us Jim is now in Rehab at Health South located on South East Community Drive in Stuart, Florida. The MDs operated on Jim's foot and found that he had a bad case of Blood Poisoning but have no idea how he got it. Jim is in Therapy up until 3PM every day except Sunday and he is up for visitors. In an email from John on Friday, John having heard from Kathleen, also brought us up to date on the extensive Therapy Jim is receiving in the hope by Kathleen and their Family to get Jim back to New York. Kathleen had to return to N.Y. for a short time but Daughter Maureen was watching over her Dad in Stuart. A prayer of Thanksgiving is certainly in order as we pray for a quick and complete recovery. National Research Council names Di Toro to environmental studies board
11:09 a.m., Feb. 24, 2014--The University of Delaware’s Dominic Di Toro has been appointed a member of the National Research Council’s Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology (BEST).
Di Toro, Edward C. Davis Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering with a joint appointment in oceanography in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, will serve a three-year term in this role.
People Stories
A part of the National Academies’ Division on Earth and Life Studies, BEST is the principal study unit on pollution problems affecting human health and the environment. The 23-member BEST board advises the federal government about science and technology matters affecting public policy on important environmental and ecological problems.
In particular, BEST addresses questions about air and water pollution; solid and hazardous waste; toxicology; epidemiology; risk assessment; applied ecology; natural resources; and environmental engineering, economics, law and policy.
Di Toro, who joined the UD faculty in 2003, is known for his expertise in developing water quality standards and mathematical models of chemicals in water. His work has been supported through funding from the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the state of Delaware, among others.
Elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in 2005, Di Toro currently directs the Center for the Study of Metals in the Environment (CSME) and is affiliated with the Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN).
His recent research projects have included a study of the Chesapeake Bay with the National Research Council and the development of water quality criteria for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The findings gathered from his recent study with the EPA were applied toward the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 and have been used to develop government regulations and water quality standards.
Di Toro received the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Simon Freese Award in 2005. He was named a highly cited researcher in ecology and environment by the Institute of Scientific Information in 2003. The author of more than 100 academic papers and one book, titled Sediment Flux Modeling, his work has been cited over 5,000 times.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering and civil and geological engineering, respectively, from Princeton University.
He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Chemical Society, American Geophysical Union, American Society of Civil Engineers, and the International Water Association and Society of Toxicology and Environmental Chemistry.

So I didn’t get into the Naval Academy, passed it over to the – to the military academy at West Point. And two days before I was supposed to enter I got a telegram – that tells you how long ago that was; here we are talking, you know, on a blog – but I got a telegram that said, congratulations, you’ve been accepted into the United States military academy and you’ll report in two days, on the first of July. And so I said: Oh, hell no. You know, I was already enrolled in another college. You know, in my mind I had completely clicked off the whole military discipline thing at that point. Remember, it was 1969-1970.
And I went home, got the telegram. My mother said, isn’t it great news? I said, yeah, it is pretty cool to get accepted, but I’m not going. And she said, oh, you have to go. It’s such an honor. And I said, no, Mom, I really can’t do it. And she burst into tears. And I said, really? And so this, you know, huge blanket of Irish Catholic guilt, you know, wafted over me. (Laughter.) And I said, OK, I’ll go. I’ll give it a shot in the summer, but I’m coming home in September and I’m going to go to Manhattan College, which is where I was enrolled in the Bronx.
And so, you remember, I walked into the first day of what’s called Reception Day. An upper classman with a red sash greets you rather warmly by yelling at you and explaining to you that, you know, you have no business being here, you’re never going to make it. And in my mind, as he’s yelling at me and telling me I’m not going to make it, I’m thinking to myself, yes, I am, I’m going to make it. And then I said, well, wait a minute, I don’t want to make it. And here I am. And in fact I’ll have 40 years – I will have graduated 40 years ago in June.

Gregory S. Price, P.E. of Verplanck, NY died February 24, 2014. He was born in Flushing, NY on November 24, 1955. He is survived by his wife, Laureen Price and his three daughters, Constantina, Kalliope, and Demetra. He leaves his parents, George and Lyn Price of Cortlandt Manor and his brother, Glenn of Verplanck.
Gregory graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering. He was employed as a Public Health Engineer at the Rockland County Health Dept., and was a member of the NY State Society of Professional Engineers. He earned his Eagle Scout Award acting as Scoutmaster for the Keon School.
Visitation is Friday, 2-4pm & 7-9pm at the Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home, Peekskill, NY. Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, 10 AM at the Assumption Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lustgarten Foundation at curePC.org.

Okay so I have a bit of a dilemma with what college i should go to. Both of these colleges are good but I dont know where to go. I wanna major in either Civil or Mechanical engineering. I like the fact that Manhattan is close to home because i get to be with my bf and friends more, and its also great for engineering. But on the other hand Quinnipiac has such a beautiful campus and it seems really nice there; I don't know much about their engineering program though. I got $7,500 from Manhattan in scholarships and $13,000 from Quinnipiac so it isn't really that much of a change in tuition. I just wanna know which school would make the most sense for me to go to? I also got into Uconn and Syracuse.

John Fahey, former CEO of the National Geographic Society, has been appointed a member of the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents. President Barack Obama signed the resolution Feb. 21 appointing him as a citizen regent. Fahey’s six-year term begins immediately. Fahey continues to serve as chairman of the National Geographic Society.
The 17-member Smithsonian Board of Regents includes nine citizen members, three members of the House of Representatives and three members of the Senate, as well as the chief justice of the United States and the vice president, both ex officio voting members. The Board of Regents is the governing body of the Smithsonian Institution.
Fahey takes the board position vacated by Roger Sant, a resident of Washington, D.C., who served two six-year terms as a regent. The Board of Regents meets four times a year at the Smithsonian. Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. presides over the meetings as chancellor, and John McCarter is the Chair of the Board.
Fahey joined National Geographic in 1996 as the first vice president and CEO of National Geographic Ventures, the non-profit organization’s business subsidiary. He later served as president of the Society (1998–2010) and CEO (1998–2011).
During his tenure at National Geographic, Fahey led the organization into cable TV with National Geographic Channel and expanded the reach of the National Geographic magazine to include 39 foreign-language editions. He also spearheaded programs for fellows, explorers-in-residence and a variety of grant-making projects around the world.
Fahey currently serves on the board of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and the board of Johnson Outdoors Inc. He was selected as one of Advertising Age magazine’s top 100 marketers and by Irish American magazine as one of their top 100 Irish Americans. He is a resident of Washington, D.C.

The BP Group is always looking for talented individuals to join our team. While the search is usually more localized, involving ads in local papers or online advertising, this past year BP has hired two employees all the way from France!
Laura Billiot and Cynthia Djongoue both attended ECAM, a General Engineering University in Lyon, France. Just a year apart in their studies, both girls enrolled in a 5-year program specializing in Mechanical Engineering under the tutelage of Professor Vincent Caillé. The program culminated in the receipt of the equivalent of a Master’s Degree in General Engineering. The University in Lyon partners with other universities all over the world. Students are given the opportunity to spend their last year studying abroad and can earn an additional Master’s Degree from one of the partner universities. Both Laura and Cynthia were selected for this double diploma program. It was in this fifth year that they attended Manhattan College and were able to receive Master's Degrees in Mechanical Engineering upon completion of their studies.
Our GM/HR manager, Nancy Falco, who has an eye for exceptional young talent, discovered Laura at a career fair at Manhattan College. Being from France isn't Laura's only distinguishing characteristic, she was also the first female to join the company as an Assistant Project Manager right out of college. Laura has since advanced to the role of Project Estimator. When asked her how she feels about her experience, Laura replied, "I love being in the US and working at BP. I am living my dream and I hope to someday grow with the company. And with the support of BP, I will be on top of my game, and be able to reach my goals and even go beyond."
Cynthia Djongoue came to BP a year later. She was the only student in her graduating class who chose to come over to the U.S. Cynthia was already interested in working at BP and she knew that Laura had found employment with the company after attending Manhattan College. Thanks to another career fair and Laura's recommendation, Cynthia is now an Assistant Project Manager at BP. When asked how she felt about working in the U.S. and for BP, she replied, "Coming to the U.S. has helped me grow as a person. You can experience, not just from books and studies, but from people you meet along the way. The people at BP are a family and I know I am in an environment where I will be able to grow personally and professionally."
Best wishes go out to both girls in their long and prosperous careers at BP!

Kenneth Larson of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away on February 25th, 2014 at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti with his family by his side.
He was born on Staten Island, New York on February 2, 1946 to Harold and Sophie (Pierlejewski) Larson and has one surviving brother, Richard Larson of Lakeland, Florida.
He graduated from St. Peter's High School of Staten Island and Manhattan College, where he studied Mechanical Engineering.
In August of 1967, he married his high school sweetheart Pam, with whom he enjoyed 46 years of a wonderful marriage.
Over the years, he worked in the utilities industry. His work took him from Connecticut to Pennsylvania to Madrid to Ann Arbor in 1979, where he moved with the primary intention of joining the Word of God Ecumenical Community.
Kenneth will be remembered by his family, his neighbors, and the members of the Christian Community and Christ the King Church as an unfailingly considerate, generous and kind man who dedicated his life to his family and to those around him.
In addition to his wife Pam, Kenneth is survived by his mother-in-law Marion Majeski and his children Susan Larson (of Lexington, Kentucky), Christopher Larson (of Cleveland, Ohio) and Michael Larson (of Miami, Florida); and four grandchildren Noah, Sophia and Grace Larson and Oscar Heft.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 28 from 6-9pm at Christ the King Catholic Church, located at 4000 Ave Maria Drive, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48105. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 1 at 1pm at Christ the King Church with Father Ed Fride and Father Tim Oudenhoven officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen of Detroit, 1820 Mt. Elliott, Detroit, MI 48207.

I have an automated google scan for anything that mentions "manhattan college" as well as check daily Legacy Dot Com.
My team mates, Mike and Phil, take the info. Mike runs the obit list that is used at the annual events. Phil runs an online prayer group. And several in the Alumni Office read my distribution.
I'm please to make some small contribution to the Jasper community.
He has "blessed me". I just have a hard time recognizing "the blessings". They come disguised as trouble, problems, and losses.
In my novel I wrote:

Michael J. McFadden grew up in Brooklyn in the ’60s, studied Peace Studies and Peace Research at Manhattan College (BA) and the U of PA’s Wharton Graduate School, and then moved to being an activist/trainer in a nonviolence commune, canvassing door-to-door for an anti-nuke group, organizing bicycle activism, and eventually writing two books aimed at fighting the antismoking movement.
So how does a hippie peace/bicycle activist become a pro-smoking activist and writer?
The answer is that I’m NOT a “pro-smoking” anything: I’m a pro-freedom, pro-science, anti-overpowering-government-control, anti-manipulation-through-dishonest-propaganda activist and writer.

Robert G. Strong, 75, of El Paso, Texas, passed away on February 25, 2014 in the presence of his loving family.
Robert is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Maria A. (Zavala) Strong of 49 years.
Robert was born in the Bronx, New York, along with his brother Thomas Strong, to George and Marie Strong. Robert attended Manhattan College where he received a Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
He worked as an accountant in El Paso, Texas and eventually ran his own restaurant supply business, which he truly enjoyed.
Robert was extremely loving and proud of his two sons, George and his wife Isela Strong of Toronto, Canada; Robert and his wife Martha Strong of El Paso, Texas; as well as his daughter Mary and her husband John Quirke of County Cork, Ireland. He truly loved and enjoyed his grandchildren Gina, Abraham, Sheldon, Madeline, Abel, Daniel, Chris, Bobby, David, Michael and Eamon, and great grandchild Levi.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 4:00 PM at the Mt. Carmel Funeral Home, 1755 N. Zaragosa, El Paso, Texas. A funeral mass for Robert will be held on March 3, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, 8600 Winchester Road, El Paso, Texas.

Arthur Godfrey was a big TV star in the 1950s and into the early 1960s. His was CBS’ most successful show.
I met Arthur Godfrey once briefly. In the mid 1950s, I was attending Manhattan College in New York City. One of the many part time jobs was as a messenger delivery boy. No bicycles then. Each messenger had a small several block area. You walked fast!
I was in and out of the CBS Building all the time. Many of which I saw Arthur Godfrey moving around. After making a delivery one day, I was in the elevator going down. Arthur Godfrey was on it, also. Just me and him. He look at me and mouthed a gruff hello.
There was a limousine waiting for Godfrey at the curb. As he was about to get in, he looked at me again. Where are you going, kid? I told him. It was about five blocks away. Get in, he said. I’ll give you a ride. It was an exciting ride for me. We chatted. He asked me all kinds of questions about myself.
An awesome experience for a 19 year old!
