POSITRACTION: Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) about Diane Nyad

LIGHTS OF KEY WEST
Posted on September 3, 2013 by keywestlou
Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957)

*** begin quote ***

Key West is a small island. Both in size and population. 1 1/2 x 4 miles. 29,000 people. The population triples during the season and on special occasions.

For a relatively tiny place, big things happen in Key West. Like yesterday. Diane Nyad completed her 100 mile plus swim from Havana to Key West.

A fete! The swim took her through waters infested with sharks and jelly fish. She had to contend with turbulent tides.

The trip took Diana just under 53 hours. She said afterwards that it was early morning, still dark, when all of a sudden she could see the lights of Key West. It heartened her. She was about 10 miles from Key West at the time.

Diana’s accomplishment is a big deal! She is the first to complete the swim without a shark cage. She is 64 years old. This was her fifth try over a period of 35 years. It took that long for her to be successful. Neither the swim nor success were easy.

Diana came ashore around 2 yesterday afternoon at Smathers Beach. She appeared tired. She was sunburned. She was also thrilled.

A huge crowd awaited her on shore and in the water. People of all ages. Even babies. Boats of all sizes. Cruise ships stopped or deviated their course so as not to interfere with her swim.

There were television and other cameras all over the place.

Diana made a brief statement. Her message was threefold. Never give up, you are never to old to chase your dream, and the swim looks like a solitary sport, but it was a team effort.

Everyone, including the President, sent immediate congratulations. Most Tweeted. National television last night and this morning carried her story and pictures of Diana coming ashore in Key West.

An impressive achievement! God bless you, Diana! You made us all feel good.

Kortovich ‘instructs’ professional players at famed Rucker Park

Filed by Rick Noland September 13th, 2013 in Sports. Kortovich, who lives in Manhattan and owns Aces Basketball, which provides private instruction in the sport, is not only fully aware of all that history, but he’s made a bit of his own.

Having attended Holy Name before playing for Brunswick as a senior, he starred at Cuyahoga Community College for two years, then went to Division I Manhattan College, but suffered a knee injury and never played. He went on to play at NAIA Urbana University and suffered another knee injury, but continued to pursue opportunities in the game he loves.

Kortovich also has gotten brief looks from several NBA teams and even had a shoe designed for him by AND1.

“It’s just the love of the game,” he said. “It was a saving grace for me. Going through a tough childhood, I could always just go outside and shoot. Nothing else matters when you’re on the court. I just have a profound love of the game.”

From The McKenna Center Missioner-in-training Hady Mendez talks about meeting the men at her Wednesday morning service site. As I think about social justice, children come to mind. And women. But I hardly ever find myself thinking about the men that need help on their journey and what I could be doing to accompany them. Problem solved. Since starting formation here at Franciscan Mission Service the first week in September, I have been spending Wednesday mornings at The McKenna Center in downtown D.C. The location serves as a drop-in center for men and a place where they can eat, sleep, do laundry, and take showers.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) reports good news

Good Afternoon All,

A prayer of thanks is in order for a young man we have had on our prayer list over the past several months. Michael, the 24 year old Nephew of one of our parishioners down here in Delaware, was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, his parents and family were distraught, his Aunt Veronica, a friend, asked for our prayers. At Mass last week, our Pastor, as we were leaving Mass, asked me if we had heard of the Miracle. We had not, but minutes later we heard from Veronica and she told us that her Nephew Michael's Scans had just come back, one day before his 25th Birthday, Michael has been pronounced free of Cancer. Veronica was in tears, I too was moved and Michael's entire Family thank you for your prayers. Prayer Works. We don't always get the response we want but we are answered. Always take time to listen. Please keep Michael in your prayers as we give thanks for a life returned. Thank you. God Bless.

*** begin quote ***

When did you start running and why?

I played rugby in Belvedere. When I was trying to make the transition from playing in the forwards to the backs, I started with Crusaders Athletic Club to develop my speed.

It turned out I was probably better at running than rugby and I wound up finishing second in the national 400m hurdle championships in my Leaving Cert year.

What has been your biggest achievement?

I was on scholarship in Manhattan College in New York and in 1998 I went unbeaten over 400m, 800m and 1,000m for the entire indoor season. The time I ran at Harvard on January 26th, 1998, I raced against one of my heroes, former Olympian Johnny Gray. To me, it was a seminal race. I did 1:49.08 indoors over 800m. I think it still ranks me in the all-time Irish indoor list but also was one of the fastest times in the US and in the world.

What’s the one thing you would change about running?

Early in my career, I pulled so many hamstrings by not understanding basic biomechanics. When someone showed me how to work within my limits, it came a lot easier to me.

*** and ***

What’s your most embarrassing moment?

There was a Rathmines 5km after I finished trying to qualify for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. I popped down to the start line and was right up with the leaders in the first mile. By the second and third mile I was barely able to walk. I went from the front of the pack to almost last.

JEMAIL: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) gives a retreat report

Good Afternoon All,

Our 22nd Manhattan College & Friends Retreat was a success made so by the Attendees and the Speakers with, in my mind, Brother Robert being at the top. The message and presentations were excellent. As I ask that you pray for the intentions of those who attended our Retreat and their families, I would like to share with you a prayer that was brought to my attention by Dick Ennis, one of our regular Retreatants. It is a prayer that I did not know existed, it resonates with our Retreat Theme, "Lord, what Do You Expect Of Me" and I thought you might like to know of it. It was written by Father Mychal Judge, Chaplin, Fire Department Of New York, who was killed on September 11, 2001. It reads:

Lord, Take me where You want me to go;

Let me meet who You want me to meet;

Tell me what You want me to say,

And keep me out of Your way.

Thank you. God Bless.

John A. Rocks
Intelligencer Journal
Lancaster New Era
Updated Sep 17, 2013 09:01

John A. Rocks, 70, of Lititz, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Lancaster General Hospital.

John was born in Manhattan, New York to the late Patrick and Edith Rocks and was the husband of Joyce Meleski with whom he celebrated 42 years of marriage this past May 29th.

He was a graduate of the Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Manhattan College in 1965. He later received a Master's of Social Work degree from Fordham University.

Before moving to Lancaster County in 2005, John spent his entire 40-year professional career in child welfare with the Catholic Archdiocese of New York. He started as a relief counselor and retired from the New York Foundling Hospital St. Agatha Home where he served as Assistant Director.

John followed the New York Yankees baseball and Giants football teams but his real passion was in playing golf. A real student of the game, John played as often as he could and freely helped others improve their golfing skills, including his wife who shared his passion for the game. Together they enjoyed many memorable hours on the beautiful golf courses of Lancaster County. Neighbors would occasionally see John practicing his golf swing in the back yard.

John thoroughly enjoyed conversation and could be counted on for his lively and challenging input. His wit and quick mind often resulted in spontaneous quips and humorous remarks.

In addition to his wife Joyce, he is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Rocks of Patterson, NY, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Donnely and Bernadette Broshinski and three brothers, Patrick, Thomas and Brendon Rocks.

Relatives and friends will be received on Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, PA 17543 with a mass of Christian burial to follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's name may be made to a charity of your choosing.

Pope Bluntly Faults Church’s Focus on Gays and Abortion
By LAURIE GOODSTEIN

Pope Francis, in the first extensive interview of his six-month-old papacy, said that the Roman Catholic Church had grown “obsessed” with preaching about abortion, gay marriage and contraception, and that he has chosen not to speak of those issues despite recriminations from some critics.

In remarkably blunt language, Francis sought to set a new tone for the church, saying it should be a “home for all” and not a “small chapel” focused on doctrine, orthodoxy and a limited agenda of moral teachings.

JNEWS: Pokorny, Joseph [MC1982] Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Operations SCWA

SCWA Says Goodbye to Herman Miller, Welcomes New Deputy CEO for Operations
September 19, 2013

The Suffolk County Water Authority this week said goodbye to Herman Miller, who retired after an illustrious four-decade career at the company, and promoted Joseph Pokorny to replace him as Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Operations.

Like Miller before him, Pokorny will have full responsibility for the operation of the Production Control, Construction Maintenance and Engineering departments, directing the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the SCWA water supply. An SCWA employee since 1995, Pokorny served as Chief Engineer from 1997 until December 2012 and as Acting Director of Distribution since then. Pokorny began his career in Production Control working for two years overseeing maintenance operations on SCWA water production and storage facilities. Among other positions prior to working for SCWA, Pokorny spent eight years at the Long Island Lighting Company in its Electrical Engineering department.

“Though it’s tough to lose Herman Miller, who has as much to do with the success and growth of SCWA as any other employee in our long history, he’s leaving the position in the extremely capable hands of Joe Pokorny,” said SCWA Chairman James F. Gaughran.

“I’m delighted to have Joe fill a vital position within the administration,” said SCWA Chief Executive Officer Jeff Szabo. “He is not only talented and experienced, but also fully embraces our vision of an efficient, lean, environmentally-conscious and transparent SCWA that is prepared to meet all future challenges.”

“Joe’s abilities, his varied experience at SCWA, and his work in private industry will serve him well in his new position,” said Miller. “As I am sure he already knows, he will be working with a group of dedicated and talented people. I hope he finds it as rewarding as I have. Congratulations and best wishes.”

Pokorny has served as the Chairman of the Long Island Water conference and currently serves as an Executive Board member for that same organization. He is also a member of the AWWA Water Utility Council. Pokorny has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College, a Masters in Business Administration from St. John’s University and is a licensed professional engineer in the State of New York.

The Suffolk County Water Authority is an independent public-benefit corporation operating under the authority of the Public Authorities Law of the State of New York. Serving approximately 1.2 million Suffolk County residents, the Authority operates without taxing power on a not-for-profit basis.

Medicaid was responsible for 48% of the 3.8 million births in 2010, an increase of 90,000 births from 2008, which was an 8% increase during that period.

In New York City in 2009, 76% of Hispanic births were covered by Medicaid, 70% of births in the black community were covered, and 31% of whites.
