POSITRACTION: First papal 'selfie'

http://www.france24.com/en/20130831-first-papal-selfie-goes-viral-social-media

31 August 2013 - 09H39

First papal 'selfie' goes viral on social media
Pope Francis poses with young people in the Church of Saint Augustine in Rome on August 28, 2013.

*** begin quote ***

AFP - Pope Francis has broken protocol once again, appearing with a puzzled look on his face in a "selfie" photo taken with a group of teenagers visiting the Vatican.

The picture appeared on the Facebook page of one of the youngsters, who used it as his profile picture, and was going viral on social media on Saturday.

The picture comes in the same week that the Oxford English Dictionary included the word "selfie" to denote a self-taken photograph on a smartphone.

*** and ***

"There is no marketing behind these actions. The pope clearly likes being with people while his predecessor liked being with books," said Beppe Severgnini, columnist for the Corriere della Sera daily.

The 76-year-old pope, Latin America's first pontiff, has repeatedly broken with Vatican tradition since being elected in March, including regularly picking up the phone and calling ordinary people who write to him.

*** end quote ***

Reminds me of how Pope John 23 was a people's pope.

I am very impressed with this Pope's ability to connect with "real people".

I bet those youngsters will never forget that moment.

Like when I met Bishop Fulton J. Sheen.

We can all take a lesson from his joy. Like the Dali Lama, life has to be "fun". Life is fun.

He certainly makes things fun.

Imagine getting a call from the Pope?

What would you say?

I know what I'd say: "Forgive me Father for I have sinned …".

A free pass at the Pearly Gates, cause I'd probably drop dead from the surprise.

On anniversary of 9/11, consider again the heroes who rushed into danger as the Twin Towers burned before their deadly collapse

*** begin quote ***

In the spring of 1986, 24-year-old Mike Carroll had an important decision to make.

A brilliant kid, he had graduated second in his class of 300 at LaSalle Academy, an achievement that earned him an engineering scholarship from Manhattan College. He used that degree to land a well-paying job in the new and growing tech division of AT&T. But something gnawed at this quiet but hard-wired young man who was coming to the realization that a shirt and tie, a desk, and the stultifying routine of a corporate existence were not for him.

Bronx Breakdown: Making Sense of the 15th Council District Race

By Alex Kratz

*** begin quote ***

9) Baby Carmen. Raquel Batist gave birth to Baby Carmen on Aug. 14, just in time to take her on the stretch run of the campaign trail. As the campaign has progressed, Batista has promoted her gender whenever possible, saying she’s the candidate who will fight for women’s rights — like reproductive rights, another issue that butts up against social conservative values.

Brief history on Batista: Batista’s been in and out of the district her whole life and was born and raised here. She has the most claim to this turf outside of Alvarez. She’s well educated (Manhattan College, CUNY Law international and constitutional rights), well connected, sharp on her issues and has some solid leadership experience, having headed the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights.

The big story about Batista, of course, was her pregnancy. She has embraced it, hyping it in press releases and going about her business, never missing a beat. I’ve been chastised for seeming insensitive for saying she made it through a two-hour forum without breaking a sweat at almost nine months pregnant. And this was probably warranted. (But I couldn’t help but note it — having lived with a nine-month-pregnant woman myself — that’s an impressive feat. We couldn’t even get through a movie together.)

There’s no question, Batista’s giving a great effort – she opened up her campaign office early in Fordham Heights — and is showing that you can be pregnant and run for office. She’s in it, going into the final weekend. If she could have chosen to not be pregnant for this race — it’s gotta be taxing being that pregnant and she lost at least a couple of weeks of voter contact time — I’m sure she probably would have. But that’s how life goes and she’s going for it. Baby Carmen now in tow.

A couple of weeks ago I promised a post going back to the beginnings of the Celtics but I got side tracked. The Celtics began in the BAA, the Basketball Association of America in 1946. There were 11 teams competing in that first season of the BAA, divided into Eastern and Western Conferences. Those 11 teams were Washington Capitols, Philadelphia Warriors, New York Knicks, Providence Steamrollers, Boston Celtics, and Toronto Huskies in the Eastern Conference. The Western Conference consisted of Chicago Stags, St. Louis Bombers, Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Falcons, and Pittsburgh Ironmen.

JFOUND: Fitzsimons, John [MMC1980] Sales Agent Portland Maine

https://portsiderealestategroup.com/group/agent/15/fitzsimons/john/

John Fitzsimons
Sales Agent

Originally from Long Island, thirty minutes east of New York City, I moved to Portland looking for a change in pace. Four years later, I have fallen in love with life here in Maine. My interest in real estate, architecture and design began during summers at my family's vacation home in eastern Long Island. On long drives through the villages and beach communities I would gaze at the beautiful homes from cedar shake cottages to stark and modern designs. Quickly I began to realize I had a passion for real estate and that I wanted to help people find places they loved to call home. I see my sales philosophy as relationship driven. I really enjoy meeting new people and getting to know what they desire in a home. Understanding my clients and their needs is my priority and the best way to ensure that a real estate transaction is successful for all parties. Previously working for Whole Foods Market Portland and Bangor Savings Bank I gained tremendous insight into our local economy and our amazingly diverse community. I love that real estate brings all those elements into play and provides me with opportunities to learn every day.

What is your passion?

“ Getting outdoors and enjoying the beauty of Maine! I love to run and I surf all year round. Some people think its crazy to be in the ocean in February when water temperatures hover around 36 degrees. If the waves are good I couldn’t be happier! ”

ADMINISTRIVIA: Remember those who have passed

Dear fjohn reinke (mc1968),

In a week it will have been a year since the passing of Frederick McCarthy. We have found that (and you may know this from personal experience) one of the most difficult times for a family after a death is the first anniversary of the loss of their loved one.

Commonly, when we lose someone dear to us, we seek ways to feel close to that person or for ways to honor their memory. You can do much to help them feel closer to their loved one at this difficult time.

Simply click on the link below to send a "Thinking of You" message to the family. Perhaps you can also take a few minutes to share a special memory of Frederick McCarthy on the Book of Memories™ tribute site. Both of these gestures cost nothing, and will mean so much to the family.

Thank you for the love you share with others, and your caring ways.

MEMAIL: MC Entrepreneurship Club needs your help

[JR: Yesterday, I was the first speaker of the year to the MC Entrepreneurship Club. Among my points was "fail quickly". (I've had a lot of practice at failing. Falling. And, well never mind. Professor P thinks I have some "unique qualities"; I attribute that to being an example "if you kids don't study head and eat your veggies, this is what happens to you." Any way, it was a fun hour or so. This email asks for your help. ]

Good Morning John ,

We had students stay for 30 minutes after you left telling us how much they enjoyed your talk and how much they learned. The comments about failing fast and having a passion for what one does in a business resonated. Thank you for kicking off our speaker series.

One of my goals for this effort is to build a database of Jaspers who can act as resource people for Jaspers who want to start a business, create a product, find financing, etc. Right now I am looking for someone who can give us the first 10 steps to creating a new business to come and talk to the club. Do you know of any one? Can you run a request in Jasper Jottings and ask alumni who are interested to email to "carolyn DOT predmore" at manhattan? (It's a dot edu address.) The engineering students were very impressed.
Thank you

As exercise science major Maria Toscano ’14 prepares to apply to the top post-baccalaureate physical therapy programs in the country, she is hoping to get a leg-up by conducting one-on-one research with Lisa Toscano, Ed.D, associate professor of kinesiology.

[JR: Can't think of anything funny to say about "legs up". At Thanksgiving, I prefer the white meat.]

Jasper Research Scholars Report on a Summer of Discovery

Ten students complete the inaugural summer program, which awards grants for undergraduate research conducted with faculty members.

When the spring semester concluded in May 2013, 10 undergraduate students shifted into overdrive in pursuit of knowledge, as part of the new Jasper Summer Research Scholars program. Through diligence, systematic inquiry, and with the guidance of their faculty mentors, they made discoveries — in their respective fields and in themselves.

[JR: The only summer discovery I made as an undergraduate was that working as a "schlub" would not keep me in the style I planned to become accustomed to. Shoulda, coulda, and woulda!]

JNEWS: Englert, Sarah [MC????] is bride

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130910&content_id=60121540&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

Pair of newlyweds set sights on 'Bucks' at Safeco
By Mark Newman / MLB.com | 9/10/2013 10:00 A.M. ET

Sarah and Luke Englert of Seattle were married in Hawaii last January, and their frequent visits to Safeco Field had at least a little something to do with it.

"Luke and I met at a small family-and-friend party as we are a part of the same parish and neighborhood," Sarah explained in an email to MLB.com. "During that party, his father asked me if I play softball. After I said yes, [and] he invited me to play softball on our parish team. Luke and I fell in love playing softball and going to M's games. We played softball all summer after we met and went to M's games together whenever we could.

"At one Mariners game with Luke's parents, one woman behind us even tapped Luke's mom on the shoulder and said that I would be her future daughter-in-law. Well, about a year later, she turned out to be right."

Just imagine that woman's reaction when she looks on Mariners.com now and sees that her prophecy not only came to pass, but that the newlyweds also became the club's star couple.

Representing all Mariners fans, the Englerts are the latest contestants on the hit MLB.com game show "Bucks on the Pond" powered by Ford. You can watch them in Episode 36 of this second season to see whether they add to the $20,955 won by fans in the previous 65 overall shows taped at 25 of the 30 Major League ballparks since the series debuted last season.

"The day Luke and I were plucked from the crowd as we were taking our ceremonial pregame stroll all around Safeco Field was incredible," Sarah said. "We walked through Safeco's main entrance, admired the sunshine, ate some stadium fare, including Luke's favorite garlic fries, and started our walk around the stadium, taking the long way to our seats 16 rows behind home plate in section 132.

"We were geared up from head to toe, including our favorite M's jerseys, and excited for the start of a new opportunity for our young ballclub to snag a victory in our presence. We were struck by such surprise when 'Bucks on the Pond' pulled us aside and asked us to play, answering trivia questions for a chance to win some cash. It started out our day at Safeco with an experience we will never forget."

"Bucks" is hosted by Jeremy Brisiel and you might be a part of this season when you least expect it. Fans at the ballpark interact with MLB.com's studio through the magic of technology in conjunction with game action inside, and shows are released each Tuesday and Thursday.

Contestants are asked a trivia question -- general knowledge and baseball -- on each pitch during a half-inning of baseball. Get the question correct and win money. Get the question wrong and it's a strike. Three strikes and you're out.

The questions' difficulty and value increase with the number of outs in the on-field action: $5 easy questions to start, $10 medium-difficulty questions after one out, $20 hard questions after two outs. If the contestant lasts longer than the team's at-bat, they win the bucks in their bank.

Cross the $100 mark during the show, and it's time for "Say the Word" powered by Ford SYNC. You can wager any part of your bank on that next question, which is asked each episode by 2014 Hall of Fame candidate Frank Thomas. Answer correctly and you win, answer incorrectly and you lose that amount ... and it's another strike.

The newlyweds stumble out of the gates in this episode, as you'll see with the first question.

"When I got the 'bull' question wrong I was shaking in my boots," Sarah said. "I thought we may never get a right answer. I was thinking that our nerves were high and that we could definitely do better if we each took a deep breath and relaxed. Being that relaxing is hardly my style, I was really counting on Luke to be the cool, calm, and composed one and pull us through. We really came together using teamwork and our complimentary skill sets and knowledge."

Luke works in accounting, while Sarah is a field chemistry specialist for Waters Corporation, based in Milford, Mass. They had attended the same parochial grade schools and high schools in Seattle, but they did not meet as adults until she moved to Seattle after attending Manhattan College in New York and working on the East Coast for a while.

They were wedded in Kauai, and they plan to return there for their one-year anniversary on New Year's to enjoy a honeymoon they had to postpone. She said it has been a "blast" being married, and having the opportunity as a couple to play "Bucks" added to it.

"Now that we've been on the show and been able to have fun and answer trivia questions to win cash, we've been addicted to keeping up with the new episodes," she said. "Not only that, but we have some of our family members watching regularly as well. It is a great addition to MLB.com, a site my husband and I frequent often to catch up on the latest in baseball. "'Bucks on the Pond' is fun and unique, as I have not seen a similar show in sports."

This was the second "Bucks" episode taped at Safeco this season, following the ballpark date in Episode 30.

In addition to the Mariners, teams visited by the "Bucks" crew include the Angels, Astros, Athletics, Brewers, Cardinals, Cubs, D-backs, Dodgers, Giants, Indians, Marlins, Mets, Orioles, Padres, Phillies, Pirates, Red Sox, Reds, Rockies, Royals, Tigers, Twins, White Sox and Yankees. Bookmark MLB.com/bucks and be on the lookout for the "Bucks" crew at your ballpark.

A decal created by a Texas sign company is drawing controversy and even resulting in some 911 calls.

The sticker, designed to be placed on a truck’s tailgate, portrays a woman bound and tied up with rope.

For about a month, the decal, created by “Hornet Signs,” has been emblazoned on an employee’s truck, and has apparently tricked many on the road into thinking an actual woman is lying in the back of the truck in distress.
