POSITRACTION: Grace, decorum, and humility is missing in sports today

http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1RpE3T

It's not about "winning". It's about "earning the win".

I learned that lesson from Heinlein's Starship Troopers. When Rico, who placed third, was mocked by the teacher giving him a badge saying "First".

Like the adage, "The victories at Waterloo were won on the playing fields of Eaton."

In our bread and circus kulture, we miss that sport is a metaphor for life. Look at the NBA Final "celebration". Where was the grace to the losing team? Where the humility? Where was the credit to others?

Primadonas in the worst way.

I'd rather watch a comedy. At least, I get the jokes.

http://manhattancollegebasketball.yuku.com/topic/2929/JASPERS-ATHLETIC-CLUB-KICKOFF-EVENT

JASPERS ATHLETIC CLUB KICKOFF EVENT

I just got off the phone with Noah Lefevre, the assistant athletic Director and Mat Wilson, director of  Basketball operations. The school has finalized plans for the initial kick off event for the Jasper Athletic Club.

The event will be held on July 24th. All who wish to attend will be invited to watch the Jaspers practice from 4:30 to 6:30 PM.  There will be a meet and greet with the coaches and many of the players starting at 7 PM, presumably at Cafe 1853 depending upon the projected turnout. There will be a buffet with beer, wine and soft drinks.   There will be no charge to attend provided that you have already joined the Club or wish to join on the 24th.  Last year, the minimum contribution level was $100, which entitled a member to certain privileges.

Here is a link to the brochure for the Club from gojaspers.com: http://www.gojaspers.com//fls/12500/pdf/Jasper%20Club18.pdf

It is extremely important for all fans of the program to consider participating in this crucial aspect of the program. Steve and Noah will explain the importance of the Club and how significant participation will assist them in bringing the program to the next level.

You will likely be getting a call from me or someone else over the next few weeks politely asking for your support. Please do your best to participate in this important aspect of the program.

If you do plan on attending, please send Noah an email at noah.lefevre@manhattan.edu     If you can not attend but wish to join, please make arrangements with Noah as soon as you can.

Success in March 2014 begins now! Please consider being a part of it.

Bipartisan Commission to Include Top Law Enforcement, Comprising Former US Attorneys, District Attorneys from Across the State & Policy Experts in Elections

Albany, NY (July 2, 2013)

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the formation of the “Commission to Investigate Public Corruption” under the Moreland Act and Executive Law Section 63(8) to probe systemic public corruption and the appearance of such corruption in state government, political campaigns and elections in New York State. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced he will appoint the members of the Commission as Deputy Attorneys General, giving the Commission broad-based authority to investigate all matters that “involve public peace, public safety, and public justice.” Under the Executive Order, the Commission will also have the power to subpoena and examine witnesses under oath as well as subpoena any necessary records. The Governor’s action follows several recent proven and alleged incidents of corruption and misconduct by public officials that have shown that current laws are inadequate and reforms are necessary to guard against abuses, ensure accountability in government, address the need for reform in our campaign finance laws, and restore the public’s confidence and trust in state government and state elections.

“We must root out corruption in politics and government,” Governor Cuomo said. “This session, I put forward the most comprehensive and aggressive legislative package Albany has seen in decades to address the corrosive influence of money in elections, strengthen prosecutors’ ability to fight corruption, increase penalties against those who violate the public trust, and give voters more access to the ballot box. From the beginning, I said I would not accept a watered-down approach to cleaning up Albany and that the Legislature must either pass this legislative package or I would empanel an investigative commission tasked with accomplishing these same goals to achieve reform. Since the Legislature has failed to act, today I am formally empanelling a Commission to Investigate Public Corruption pursuant to the Moreland Act and Section 63(8) of the Executive Law that will convene the best minds in law enforcement and public policy from across New York to address weaknesses in the State’s public corruption, election and campaign finance laws, generate transparency and accountability, and restore the public trust.”

“New Yorkers want real reform, and expect and deserve the officials they put in office to be working to serve the public interest, not their own,” said Attorney General Schneiderman. “This commission will be able to conduct a top to bottom investigation of New York State’s government, and move us forward to repair our broken political process, strengthen our representative democracy and give New Yorkers the quality of leadership they deserve.”

“By convening this Moreland Commission on Public Corruption, Governor Cuomo is taking an aggressive and necessary step to strengthen our laws so that we can more effectively combat corruption in New York State government,” said Co-Chair William J. Fitzpatrick. “The Commission will be a powerful body to root out those who take advantage and defraud the public. I am pleased to be a part of the Governor’s efforts to return the public’s trust in government and enhance our democracy. He has put together a team of leading prosecutors and policy experts that I am proud to be a part of, and together we will work to clean up Albany once and for all.”

“Governor Cuomo has made it clear that corruption in New York’s government will not be tolerated,” said Co-Chair Kathleen Rice. “Over the past two and a half years, he has taken bold steps to restore integrity in state government and this past legislative session, he proposed major reforms to fight public corruption and ensure fairer and honest elections. The Moreland Commission on Public Corruption will carry out those important goals by undertaking a thorough investigation and review of existing laws so that we can find ways to improve them and protect the rights of New Yorkers. I thank the Governor for his leadership on this important issue and look forward to working with some of the best law enforcement and public policy professionals in this state.”

“The culture of corruption in Albany has undermined New Yorkers' faith in their government, and something must be done to create fundamental change,” said Co-Chair Milton L. Williams, Jr. “I am honored to be working with the Governor, the Attorney General and my fellow Commissioners to investigate and expose the problems and lead the charge for reform. The work of this historic commission will not be done until we have restored the public trust. Those who abuse that trust are on notice."

The Commission to Investigate Public Corruption will have broad investigative authority under the Moreland Act and Executive Law Section 63(8). Previous commissions established by former governors, including Governors Mario Cuomo, Thomas Dewey, and Nelson Rockefeller, conducted investigations to uncover the facts involving corruption and misconduct in many different areas, including, for example, certain private industries, local governments, state agencies, political campaigns for all State offices and political parties. These past commissions provide strong precedents for the Commission to Investigate Public Corruption’s broad jurisdiction. Challenges to these Commissions’ subpoenas were filed by local officials, private individuals, and political parties, and were rejected by the courts in every instance.

The Commission to Investigate Public Corruption will be tasked with thoroughly reviewing the adequacy of existing state laws, regulations and procedures involving unethical and unlawful misconduct by public officials, and the electoral process and campaign finance laws. The Commission will also examine whether existing laws have been fairly and vigorously enforced, and what changes must be made to such enforcement. During the Commission’s investigation, it will also review recent instances of reported misconduct by officials to determine causes and adequacy of laws and enforcement tools to more effectively prevent and punish this kind of misconduct in the future. The Commission is directed to make recommendations to toughen and improve existing laws and procedures.

Areas where the Commission will focus its investigation include but are not limited to:

Criminal statutes for corruption and misconduct by public officials, such as bribery laws.

Campaign financing including but not limited to contribution limits and other restrictions; disclosure of third-party contributions and expenditures; and the effectiveness of existing campaign finance laws.

Compliance of outside organizations and persons with existing lobbying laws, including but not limited to organizations engaged in lobbying and other efforts to influence public policies and elections, and the effectiveness of such laws.

Adequacy and enforcement of the State’s election laws and electoral process including: the structure and composition of the State and County Boards of Elections, the Board of Elections’ enforcement, and the effectiveness of and compliance with existing election laws.

During its investigation, the Commission is mandated to promptly communicate any evidence of violations of existing law to the appropriate law enforcement agencies, including the Attorney General. In such cases, the State Police will make jurisdictional referrals to the Attorney General where appropriate.

The Commission will issue a preliminary report on its initial findings and recommendations by December 1, 2013.

The Commission to Investigate Public Corruption (Moreland Commission) Includes:

JNEWS: Lampasona, Alexa [MC????] risks all to make a save

Hero Recounts Dramatic Flanders Bay Rescue Attempt

Despite a young woman's heroic efforts, one of the two men pulled from the water Monday died.

What started out as a normal workday for Remsenburg resident Alexa Lampasona, 21, ended in tragedy Monday as she tried desperately to save a man from the waters of Flanders Bay.

Lampasona, a recent Manhattan College graduate who works aboard the Riverhead Aquarium's Atlantis Explorer tour boat, was the so-far unidentified young woman who jumped into the water to try and save an unconscious man she spotted in Flanders Bay.

Lampasona described the frightening experience. "It was very scary to see the man in the water," she said.

According to Southampton Town police, a call came in at 2:29 p.m. Monday from an individual aboard a vessel in Flanders Bay, north of Birch Creek, about a man who had been found unconscious and not breathing in the water.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael Fusco said Monday that a report came in from an Long Island Aquarium Atlantis Explorer tour boat Monday afternoon, after the man was spotted in distress in Flanders Bay.

The United States Coast Guard Station Shinnecock, which is located in Hampton Bays, had a boat in the area and responded, Fusco said.

"The Atlantis boat could not get the man onboard. He was unconscious," Fusco said. "The Coast Guard boat came alongside and pulled him out of the water."

The man's condition was assessed and his vitals taken; he was found to be unresponsive, Fusco said, and CPR was performed.

The USCG transported the man to the Point Road boat ramp in Flanders, where members of the Flanders fire department met the boat.

Lampasona said she didn't think twice about trying to save the man. "At the aquarium we are trained to know what to do in the situation if someone is overboard. However, it has never happened to me before, especially with an unconscious man. Initially, I was holding on to a ladder on the boat with one hand and attempting to put the rope around the man with the other. I was able to put the rope around his head and one of his arms but I couldn't reach the other arm. That's when I decided to go in the water."

Upon hearing of the man's death, Lampasona described her feelings. "I was extremely sad to hear that he didn't make it. All I wanted while I was in that water was for him to be all right. I kept thinking that this man could be someone's dad, husband, brother, and cousin — and couldn't help thinking how this will affect his loved ones. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, and I am very sorry for their loss."

Despite the tragedy, Lampasona said she would do the same thing in a heartbeat. "I realized that I can remain calm under pressured situations, and with that knowledge I know I would do something like this again."

JOBIT: Keady, J. Walter "Walt" Jr. [MC???? RIP]

J. Walter Keady
Obituary

KEADY
J. Walter Jr. "Walt," joined the Lord on July 2, 2013.

He will be remembered for his larger-than-life persona, quick wit, bright smile and warm-hearted listening manner.

Walt was born on November 27, 1926 in Syracuse, NY to John Walter and Nellie (Meagher) Keady. His sisters Angela and Eleanor soon followed. The family moved to Ridgewood, NJ and Walt graduated from Mount Carmel Grammar School and Saint Luke's High School. At Saint Luke's, Walt made life-long friends and excelled at basketball, making school history by being named Bergen County high scoring player his junior and senior years. An excerpt from the Bergen Evening Record at the time noted his achievements: "…as a reward for his outstanding court play, Keady has been named to various All County, Conference and All State Teams. He was headed for Holy Cross this fall but the call to service changed his plans."

He served in the Navy aboard the USS Hancock in 1945. After the war, he graduated from Manhattan College.

Walt married Mary Kennedy of Ridgewood at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on October 2, 1954. Together, with God's help, they raised 6 children in the home they built on Nottingham Road in Ramsey. Nothing was more important to Walt than his family.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary, and his sister, Eleanor Askins. He will be forever missed and loved by his children Claire, Kevin (Barbara), Kathleen, John Walter (Mary), Christopher (Kathleen) and Mary Carroll (John) and his grandchildren, Oliver, Elizabeth, James, Charlie, Regan, Christopher Jr., Patrick, Michaela, Connor, Sumer and Sarah Keady and Olivia, Harry, Maggie and Frankie Pfeiffer and 6 nieces and nephews.

An avid sports fan, coach and participant, Walt was a season ticket holder for the NY Giants, played countless early morning rounds of golf at Ramsey Golf and Country Club and coached all three of his sons on the Eagles baseball team. Not willing to leave the basketball court, Walt coached his grandson, Oliver, in basketball for four years at Mahwah Park and Recreation. Walt was a Certified Financial Planner for Investors Diversified Services and Ameriprise Financial. He reluctantly retired at 78.

He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Angela. Walt's family welcomes you to pay your last respects on Monday July 8th at Vander Platt Funeral Home (www.vpfh.com) at 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, N.J. from 3-8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at the St Paul R.C. Church, 200 Wyckoff Avenue, Ramsey, NJ at 10 AM on Tuesday July 9th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Parkinson Research Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018 or the St Paul R.C. Church Eucharistic Ministry Team.

ENDNOTE: The Palin Doctrine "I say let Allah sort it out."

http://lewrockwell.com/buchanan/buchanan318.html

The Palin Doctrine
by Patrick J. Buchanan

*** begin quote ***

On U.S. military intervention in Syria's civil war, where "both sides are slaughtering each other as they scream over an arbitrary red line 'Allahu akbar' ... I say let Allah sort it out."

So said Sarah Palin to the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference. And, as is not infrequently the case, she nailed it.

Hours later, Gideon Rachman of the Financial Times, at length, echoed Palin: "Those who are urging the US to get more deeply involved in the Syrian conflict now are living in the past."

Four fundamental changes make it "no longer realistic, or even desirable, for the US to dominate" the Middle East as we did from the Suez crisis of 1956 through the Iraq invasion of 2003.

The four changes: the failures of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, the Great Recession, the Arab Spring and emerging U.S. energy independence.

Indeed, with $2 trillion sunk, 7,000 U.S. troops dead, 40,000 wounded, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans dead, and millions of refugees, what do we have to show for this vast human and material waste?

Can a country with an economy limping along, one that has run four consecutive deficits in excess of $1 trillion, afford another imperial adventure?

*** end quote ***

Now I know everyone dismissed her as a lightweight. I, on the other hand, thought that she was honest and said what she thought.

So here me have the non-interventionism of the Taft Wing of the Republican party, which used to be represented by Ron Paul, summed up by Sarah: MYOB!

Works for Switzerland!
