May 19, 1939-Jan. 23, 2013 Born in The Bronx, New York, the son of Felix and Nora Duffy and the loving husband of Eileen (Heron), John has found his eternal rest after a long struggle with melanoma. In love with his life and his work, he was until recently still to be found at his office at DLA Piper LLP (US) where he specialized in commercial real estate leasing. Previous to DLA Piper, he was a partner at Pillsbury Madison & Sutro. He is survived by his stepson, Morgan Alexander of Casa Grande, AZ; his brothers Edward (Barbara) of Wauwatosa, WI and Patrick (Brigid) of Peekskilll, NY; and his nephews and nieces: Lt. Col. Kevin Duffy, USMC of Carlsbad, CA, Jack of Somers, NY, Patrick of Mt. Kisco. NY, Joshua of West Allis, WI, Benjamin of Minneapolis, MN, Deirdre Benedict of San Leandro, CA, and Katherine and Nora of Wauwatosa, WI. Immediately after receiving his law degree from N.Y.U., John moved to Los Angeles and began his forty-year career as an attorney. Previously, he had earned a Bachelor's from St. Joseph's in Yonkers, NY, and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and from there he returned to the Bronx and earned a Master's at Manhattan College. John's colleagues at DLA Piper expressed their sorrow at his passing with a heart-felt appreciation which read in part, "John earned a reputation of being one of the finest real estate lawyers in California." His strong intellect and passion for the law was tempered by the street smarts and instincts he gained growing up in the Bronx. As the son of an Irish bar and restaurant owner, he had a wonderful insight into the nature of people. Those who knew John could only smile thinking of him, as a young man, selling beer at Yankee Stadium. Living in the Bronx may also account for his great love of Hawaii, being in the sun and on the beach instead of the snow and slush of New York. "Few lawyers in California could match John Duffy's skills as a lawyer; all would agree that there was no better person than John." He did not swear, was a devoted husband to Eileen (as John said, "the love of my life"), and could protect his clients without raising his voice, relying instead on logic and appealing to the other side's sense of fairness. Each time a deal was concluded, John's client, the other side's lawyer, and the other side had very positive feelings toward John as he established a framework for the transaction to proceed on a win-win basis. Those of us who had the privilege of working with John cannot recall him ever speaking negatively of others. He was also a wonderful mentor of young lawyers, instilling intellectual and ethical rigor through his own dedication to the law. "Simply put, John was an elegant and decent human being with a generous spirit who was, and will remain, cherished by his clients and adored by his partners and co-workers. He, and the twinkle in his eye, will be missed by all." A scrappy guard on the basketball court, a genial bon vivant and a disciplined runner of a New York City Marathon, John became an avid Lakers fan but in baseball never lost his love for the Yankees and found his West Coast Rockaway in Manhattan Beach. Viewing from 12PM to 4PM, with a Memorial Service dedicated for the final hour, will be held at the White & Day Mortuary, 3215 Sepulveda Boulevard, Manhattan Beach, CA., on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. Heneghan, 69, of North Granby, CT and Cape Coral, FL, passed away on Sunday (January 20, 2013). Born in New York City and raised in the Bronx, he later settled and lived for 41 years in North Granby. A graduate of Manhattan College, he worked as a mechanical engineer in the Aerospace, Manufacturing, Commercial Real Estate, and Farming industries. He was a man of many talents and interests; he worked on the Apollo space program, received multiple US patents, but found peace listening to music and engineering things in his garage. His love of his family and dedication to his community was obvious in his readiness to always help. An accomplished rower and a national champion, he also channeled his passion for the sport as a high school, collegiate, and adult coach. In retirement, he became an avid cyclist. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Barbara; children, Kerry Heneghan Tharpe (Wink), James F. Heneghan (Christina), Tara Heneghan Law (Richard); siblings Ann Corbett, Margaret Scherder, Catherine Ballerini, Frank Heneghan; grandchildren, Margaret, Hollis, Colin, Katherine, Isabel, Annabelle, and Kyra. Born September 21, 1931 in Providence, Rhode Island to Andrew J. and Helen McGowan, Andrew attended La Salle Academy in Providence and in 1949, was awarded the Providence Journal Honor Roll Athlete award as the state's finest scholar-athlete. Andrew grew up to be a well-respected educator and athlete who loved to read, golf, spend time by the ocean, be with his friends and family, and to give back to his community. Andrew attended Manhattan College in New York City where he starred for both the basketball and baseball teams. He was drafted by professional teams in both sports, and then drafted by the U.S. Army where he served at Fort Dix from 1953-1955. Following the army, Andrew received his masters in Education from New York University and taught and coached basketball at Bishop Laughlin in Brooklyn, NY. In 1957, he moved his family back to Rhode Island to join the Warwick school system, where he continued to enrich the lives of the young people he taught and coached at Aldrich, Warwick Vets and Pilgrim High Schools. In 1968, Andrew became the Director of Athletics for the Warwick public school system where was awarded the first R.I. Athletic Director of the Year Award in 1973, and later became Director of Guidance at Bishop Hendricken High School. Andrew is a member of the Manhattan College Hall of Fame, the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, the R.I. School Athletics Administrator's Hall of Fame, and the Bishop Hendricken and La Salle Academy Halls of Fame. While his athletic abilities and dedication to his career brought awards and accolades, Andrew's most cherished vocation was his family, and in particular being "Poppy" to his seven grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean McGowan, his three children, Ann Marie Mehlert, Andrew McGowan and Thomas McGowan, and his seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother John McGowan, sisters Marita McGowan and Peggy Morrissroe. He was predeceased by his first child Kathleen Schusler and brother Joseph McGowan. Andrew was also a longtime volunteer at McAuley Ministries in Providence, where in lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made at www.mcauleyri.org. 2012-01-29PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) ask for his nieceGood Afternoon All,An update on our Niece and God Child, Doreen, for whom we have been praying. I guess that Stage 4 Cancer can be almost as unpredictable as life but as Jim Smith says, Prayer Works. We visited with Doreen last week, which was very special. She has lost a lot of weight but as she said, that seems to be leveling off and she is more able to eat certain foods. Her MD Team, as she refers to them, continue to treat her with Hormones which seem to be having a positive effect. To us she looks good. The tumor in her brain has been shrunk away. The tumor behind her Eye has shrunk but her eyesight in the Eye is still non-existent and the prognosis at this time has the MDs non-committal but they are dealing with it. The spot on Doreen's Liver is going to be frozen to prevent further growth (that is positive). At this point, we do not know where her Breast Cancer and Nodes stand. So all in all, some good things happening. Doreen's Medical Coverage has ended but she was able to transfer part to her Husband's plan and her Medical Team is working with her to try to keep her covered so we shall see how that goes. If you were to meet this Petite Dynamo, you would see how well she is handling all this, though she feels she could do better and keeps trying. Her attitude is positive, her spirit and courage are an example to all and she is so grateful for your prayers. Doreen's Mom, Eileen, Doreen's Brothers, Steven and Robert, her two Sons and Husband continue to be so supportive and of course her Daughter Katie (Downs Syndrome) is a joy.
