POSITRACTION: Fighting poverty?

http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=16790

Writing in The Washington Post, Bishop Jaime Soto of Sacramento says that “Catholics must remind themselves and the world of the importance of fighting poverty.”

He begins:

Imagine the recent debate over the “fiscal cliff,” which found Democrats and Republicans alike obsessing over whose tax rates—people earning more than $250,000? $400,000?—might go up, and how different the debate might have been if the same attention had gone to the other end of the income spectrum. What if our leaders had focused on the lives of the millions who live in poverty and stand on the brink of despair? What if they had talked about the working poor and the tax credits that are vital to lifting millions out of poverty? What if keeping families together and saving mothers and children from the abortion cliff had been on the top of their agenda?

# - # - #

I guess I'm really a fat old white guy injineer at heart, because to me "fighting poverty" means improving the lives of the poor by giving them effective ways out of poverty. Maybe it's un-Christian or un-Catholic, but I want to succor those who have no options but not trap those capable of escaping poverty in the mire of de-motivating Gooferment "programs". Those programs do nothing but create the modern day "slave plantation" for poor of all races. A woman who runs HomeFront in Mercer County NJ described the NJ Welfare program as "a trap to condemn poor women and their children to a life of perpetual poverty". Her program, and it's really "hers", moves the needy from the grasp of the welfare bureaucrats by giving them the support need to pull themselves out. She's a fighter and coach who puts the fight back into people that have been trained to be dependent.

I think that the irresponsible fiscal policy of the Gooferment is making us all poor. Giving the Government more money to do bad things is the wrong answer. Not only do they waste it and make war with it, they take it from the People who can use it for true charity.

Holy Mother Church has lost so many battles against the "King" (i.e., Secular Progressive Gooferment) I wonder if She, and we, can recover.

If I had to pick the battles -- education, honest money, and the return of "charity" to Holy Mother Church and other such private organizations -- that need to be fought and won to restore America and the American Spirit.

JOBIT: Duffy, John J. [MC1971 RIP]

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/latimes/obituary.aspx?n=John-DUFFY&pid=162601149

John J. DUFFY
Obituary

DUFFY, John J.
May 19, 1939-Jan. 23, 2013

Born in The Bronx, New York, the son of Felix and Nora Duffy and the loving husband of Eileen (Heron), John has found his eternal rest after a long struggle with melanoma. In love with his life and his work, he was until recently still to be found at his office at DLA Piper LLP (US) where he specialized in commercial real estate leasing. Previous to DLA Piper, he was a partner at Pillsbury Madison & Sutro.

He is survived by his stepson, Morgan Alexander of Casa Grande, AZ; his brothers Edward (Barbara) of Wauwatosa, WI and Patrick (Brigid) of Peekskilll, NY; and his nephews and nieces: Lt. Col. Kevin Duffy, USMC of Carlsbad, CA, Jack of Somers, NY, Patrick of Mt. Kisco. NY, Joshua of West Allis, WI, Benjamin of Minneapolis, MN, Deirdre Benedict of San Leandro, CA, and Katherine and Nora of Wauwatosa, WI.

Immediately after receiving his law degree from N.Y.U., John moved to Los Angeles and began his forty-year career as an attorney. Previously, he had earned a Bachelor's from St. Joseph's in Yonkers, NY, and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and from there he returned to the Bronx and earned a Master's at Manhattan College.

John's colleagues at DLA Piper expressed their sorrow at his passing with a heart-felt appreciation which read in part, "John earned a reputation of being one of the finest real estate lawyers in California." His strong intellect and passion for the law was tempered by the street smarts and instincts he gained growing up in the Bronx.

As the son of an Irish bar and restaurant owner, he had a wonderful insight into the nature of people. Those who knew John could only smile thinking of him, as a young man, selling beer at Yankee Stadium. Living in the Bronx may also account for his great love of Hawaii, being in the sun and on the beach instead of the snow and slush of New York.

"Few lawyers in California could match John Duffy's skills as a lawyer; all would agree that there was no better person than John." He did not swear, was a devoted husband to Eileen (as John said, "the love of my life"), and could protect his clients without raising his voice, relying instead on logic and appealing to the other side's sense of fairness. Each time a deal was concluded, John's client, the other side's lawyer, and the other side had very positive feelings toward John as he established a framework for the transaction to proceed on a win-win basis. Those of us who had the privilege of working with John cannot recall him ever speaking negatively of others. He was also a wonderful mentor of young lawyers, instilling intellectual and ethical rigor through his own dedication to the law. "Simply put, John was an elegant and decent human being with a generous spirit who was, and will remain, cherished by his clients and adored by his partners and co-workers. He, and the twinkle in his eye, will be missed by all."

A scrappy guard on the basketball court, a genial bon vivant and a disciplined runner of a New York City Marathon, John became an avid Lakers fan but in baseball never lost his love for the Yankees and found his West Coast Rockaway in Manhattan Beach.

Viewing from 12PM to 4PM, with a Memorial Service dedicated for the final hour, will be held at the White & Day Mortuary, 3215 Sepulveda Boulevard, Manhattan Beach, CA., on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. A New York Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Sacred Heart School, 1248 Nelson Avenue, Bronx, NY 10452 or the John Wayne Cancer Institute, 2200 Santa Monica Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA. 90404. Go to www.lafuneral.com to send the family messages, share memories and to obtain directions to the service. White and Day Mortuary - Manhattan Beach 310-792-7575

Andrew attended Manhattan College in New York City where he starred for both the basketball and baseball teams. He was drafted by professional teams in both sports, and then drafted by the U.S. Army where he served at Fort Dix from 1953-1955. PRAYERREQUEST: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) adds some details

Good Afternoon All,

A couple of evenings ago we added John Sullivan's Brother Gene (please see below) to our prayer list and Gene has sent us, through Mike, a wonderful thank you for our prayers and gratitude for our continued support. With so much that Gene has going on, the fact that he took the trouble to get back to us is special, "Good Man, Himself." Gene thought that we, the group, are a Mount Saint Michael's Alumni Group, and that is OK, the important part is that we keep Gene and his family in our prayers. Thank you. God Bless.

Phil Colon
Good Evening Once Again,

John Sullivan ' 63, a friend and Mount Saint Michael Classmate of Mike McEneney asks that we pray for his Brother, Gene. Gene started Chemo Treatment this week. A large mass, too big to operate upon, was discovered in Gene's chest. The MDs are trying to shrink the mass with Radiation and treat the Cancer with Chemo. Treatment may last up to 6 months. Please keep Gene, his Brother John and their family in your prayers as we pray for the complete success of the Treatment Regimen the MDs have set in motion. Thank you. God Bless.

JEMAIL: Apoldo, Lou (MC1963) comments on a great dental plan

Regarding your Endnote about how politicians make such "smart investments," every critical American, like us fat old injuneers, knows that America has the best politicians that money can buy. A restaranteur near Pittsburg who regularly displays politically incorrect messages on the large sign in front of his restaurant, once displayed a sign to the effect that we regularly have two politicians who each spend about a billion dollars each on their campaigns to win a job that only paid $400,000. It must have one heck of a great dental plan!

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) on McGowan, Andrew James Jr. [MC1953 RIP]

Good Evening,
Bob Mattis has shared some sad news with us regarding the death of Fellow Jasper, Andy McGowan. Andy was an early member of the Manhattan College Hall Of Fame and very proud of being a Jasper who certainly portrayed the LaSallian Spirit in the way he lived his life and the way he loved his family and friends. As Bob says, " Please say a prayer for Andy, he is with the Angels."
The following Obituary is a tribute to a good man. Please keep Andy and his family in your prayers as we pray for the repose of Andy's soul as he has entered the Kingdom of Heaven.
Thank you. God Bless.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) ask for his niece

Good Afternoon All,

An update on our Niece and God Child, Doreen, for whom we have been praying. I guess that Stage 4 Cancer can be almost as unpredictable as life but as Jim Smith says, Prayer Works. We visited with Doreen last week, which was very special. She has lost a lot of weight but as she said, that seems to be leveling off and she is more able to eat certain foods. Her MD Team, as she refers to them, continue to treat her with Hormones which seem to be having a positive effect. To us she looks good. The tumor in her brain has been shrunk away. The tumor behind her Eye has shrunk but her eyesight in the Eye is still non-existent and the prognosis at this time has the MDs non-committal but they are dealing with it. The spot on Doreen's Liver is going to be frozen to prevent further growth (that is positive). At this point, we do not know where her Breast Cancer and Nodes stand. So all in all, some good things happening. Doreen's Medical Coverage has ended but she was able to transfer part to her Husband's plan and her Medical Team is working with her to try to keep her covered so we shall see how that goes. If you were to meet this Petite Dynamo, you would see how well she is handling all this, though she feels she could do better and keeps trying. Her attitude is positive, her spirit and courage are an example to all and she is so grateful for your prayers. Doreen's Mom, Eileen, Doreen's Brothers, Steven and Robert, her two Sons and Husband continue to be so supportive and of course her Daughter Katie (Downs Syndrome) is a joy. Please keep Doreen and her family in your prayers and keep that volume up. Thank you so much for your prayers. God Bless.

A New Beginning for a Church Where Demolition Once Started

By FRANCES ROBLES

On Sunday, worshipers, including descendants of some of the original Irish parishioners, gathered as Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan consecrated and dedicated the newly renovated building. After 12 years and nearly $15 million, the church, on Avenue B and Eighth Street, was once again a parish church.

“You don’t believe in miracles, and then something like that happens,” said Peter Quinn, an author whose grandparents were married at St. Brigid’s in 1899. “It seemed so hopeless.”

It is one of life's great mysteries that so many liberal people are so callous when it comes to aborting fetuses.
