Retiring Londonderry principal still hopes for a call from the Yankees

— James Elefante has made a career out of being a principal.
Elefante,
56, spent
16 years as the head of the Matthew Thornton School, six years as
assistant principal at the former junior high and the last four years
as principal of Londonderry High School — for a total of 26
years
as a Londonderry school principal. He retires this month at the end of
the school year.
He
and his wife,
Candace, have two daughters — Kimberly, 21, a student at
Colby-Sawyer College, and Lindsey, 18, who graduates from Londonderry
High this week.

are you going to do when you retire?
Lots
of different
things involved with education. I’m going to be teaching a
college class and hopefully working with student teachers, aspiring
administrators and anything else anybody wants me to do. But I will
give all that up if I get a call from the (New York) Yankees to coach.
Coach?
Like a third base coach?
I
want to manage. I want to be in charge. I want to be principal of the
Yankees. So, I’m waiting for the call.
Why
are you a Yankees fan, anyway?
I’m
from New
York originally. I went to Manhattan College and Adelphi and taught in
New York and on Long Island. I’ve been a New Englander for
the
last 30 years … I do like the Celtics.
The
video tribute
the students showed at your last pep rally showed you getting a pie in
the face. In 26 years, how many pies have you caught?
I couldn’t tell you. Many. I’ve also gone in the
dunk pool
two, maybe four times. I kissed a pig once, but it was a cute pig.
I’ve been dressed up as a cheerleader. And the worst thing, I
was
dressed up as a Red Sox player.
Was it fun being a principal?
Absolutely.
It’s the best job I’ve ever had. Actually,
it’s the only job I’ve ever had.
So,
what was fun about it?
Just
being with the kids. Just bonding with them and seeing them succeed.
Seeing them struggle and then succeed.
What’s
the biggest thing people don’t know about being a principal?
People
don’t
realize how involved principals and teachers have to get with kids and
how well they get to know kids and families. It’s different
today
than it was many years ago.
Your
own children went to Londonderry schools while you were the principal.
Did that cause any problems?
No.
When my kids are
in school, I see them just as I see every other kid. You’ve
got
to realize I’ve been principal for most of these kids nine
out of
their 12 years at school. They’re all my kids when
I’m at
work. Obviously at home, it’s different.
Except
for managing the Yankees, did you ever want to try another line of work?
No.
I can’t
imagine myself having done anything else. I’m not sure I
could.
Since I was 12, I was going to be in education. I have absolutely zero
regrets.

fellow Jaspers:
I
have had some very
sad email exchanges with one of the chaps who was unfortunately swept
up in that drug raid at Manhattan College. He’s trying to put
his
life back together. I’ve opined on how I believe that
everyone is
entitled to the freedom to decide what to put in their own body without
gooferment ‘help’. I don’t know that this
video would
have helped them. It certainly couldn’t have hurt. I think
that
the Professor is absolutely right. Keep your mouth shut at all times! I
hope that none of us are ever in that situation, BUT, if you ever find
yourself in such circumstances, remember what the Prof said. I will!

New Pro Shop Manager At SCGCC

Stoddard is the new Pro-Shop and Operations Manager at the
Sullivan County Golf & Country Club on Route 52 in Liberty.
Stoddard,
46, took on his new job in April. His family has been a
member of the club for over 50 years and Michael noted he has been
playing this course since he was 10-years old.
He
is a graduate of Liberty Central High School and received his BA from
Manhattan College in 1984.
Michael
worked in the insurance industry as an insurance claims
adjuster and in 2001 opened Cobblers Restaurant on Liberty’s
North Main Street where he served as owner, chef and general manager
until the popular restaurant was closed in 2007.
Stoddard
started cooking for the new 52 Steakhouse in 2008 when
“Nick” opened this restaurant at the Sullivan
County Golf
& Country Club.
In
addition to being the Pro-Shop and Operations
Manager Michael continues to cook at this restaurant several days a
week.
Michael
noted in an interview at the golf course last week that
“the opportunity presented itself to place a bid for
operation
and management of the pro shop. I won the bid and now cook part time at
52 Steakhouse and as an independent operator run the pro shop for the
membership.”
The
Sullivan County Golf & Country Club is owned by members who are
stockholders and a board of directors. John Burke is president of the
board of directors.
Clay
Huebsch is the groundskeeper for the club.
Stoddard
said that his goal for this season “is to let the
general public know that Sullivan County Golf & Country Club
welcomes all players from beginners to experienced players and that
everyone can have fun here.”
He
pointed out that the course offers a beautiful view and is a
challenging course with affordable green fees.
The
Sullivan County Golf & Country Club is also the home of
Sullivan County’s newest Steak House, the 52 Steakhouse,
serving
a full lunch and dinner menu.
The
Club offers dine and golf packages with the 52 Steakhouse where you
can play 18 holes of golf with a cart and have lunch for $32 and
18-holes of golf with a cart and dinner for $45 and the special
includes a beverage and dessert.
Special
group rates of 20 or more is also available.
The
course also offers company outings for employees including golf, lunch
and dinner as well as tournaments for fund raisers.
Clubs are available for rent and the pro shop is equipped with all the
items needed for your next round of golf.
Membership
on this course that was opened in 1925 has grown this year
and both certificate and seasonal memberships are available.
The
course plays host to three leagues, Monday Men’s, Ladies
league on Tuesday and Men’s open league on Wednesday. In June
a
couples league will start on Thursday.
New
at the course this year is the 8th tee menu which is attached to
all golf carts and offers golfers out on the course to use their cell
phones and call in an order which will be ready when them make the turn
or come in to the dining room or lounge.

Sullivan
County Golf & Country Club has 30 carts for rental and
green fees for 18-holes is $14 Monday through Friday and $22 on
Saturday, Sunday and holidays….after 1 p.m,. on these days
the
rate is $16.
Cart
rates for 9 holes is $8 and $13 for 18 holes. A special weekend rate
for 18 holes and cart after 1 p.m. is $25.
A
Sullivan County Golf & Country Club Champions board located in
the cocktail lounge contains names of club champions from 1935 to 1988
with 13 club championships won by the late John
“Jack”
Coughlin, a true gentleman and outstanding golfer.
This
nine hole golf course offers a whole set of different tees for
holes 10-18 and plays to a total yardage of 3,006 yards for nine holes
from the men’s tees. Par is 36.for men and 39 for women.

further down the fairways and this avoids golfers hitting into each

Memorial Road Race in downtown Rutland on Sunday. Rodgers, 60,
four-time winner of the Boston and New York Marathons, was nursing a
calf injury but ran the race nonetheless, finishing in 54:10.

origin of the race came from a challenge between Clarence DeMar, a
seven-time Boston Marathon winner, and Rutland’s Frank
Crowley.
They challenged one another in a race from Proctor to Rutland. Crowley
was an NCAA All-American distance runner at Manhattan College and was
on the United States 1932 Olympic team.
Today
the race is named for the three Crowley brothers of Rutland: Frank, Joe
and Larry.

FRANCISCO, peacefully passed away May 26th at his home of
Natural causes at 97 yrs of age. “Pancho” was born
Feb. 4,
1911 in Havana, Cuba. He attended Manhattan College, New York in 1933
and later attended Fordham University and Miami University School of
Law . He married his wife Olga Garcia- Pulido July,1 1942. Pancho moved
from Cuba to Coral Gables in April 1960. He is survived by his three
children Ana Maria, Lourdes Maria , and Francisco
“Pancho”,
his son. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren Cristina,

Abstract Symmetric propositions over domain $\mathfrak{D}$ and

characterized following Zermelo, and a correlation of such propositions
with logical type-$\langle \vec{n} \rangle$ quantifiers over
$\mathfrak{D}$ is described. Boolean algebras of symmetric propositions
over $\mathfrak{D}$ and ? are shown to be isomorphic to algebras of
logical type-$\langle \vec{n} \rangle$ quantifiers over $\mathfrak{D}$.
This last result may provide empirical support for Tarski’s
claim
that logical terms over fixed domain are all and only those invariant
under domain permutations.

your information the other was the Jasper Journal, for which I was
news editor and Jerry Breen cartoonist (Jasperman). I also believe
James Paterson wrote for us first so I can take credit for giving him
his first writing job. It was founded by Steve Burchik.

Is It Me?

Is
it me or has the Rumble in the Bronx turned into the Rumble in the
Bronx, Manhattan, and New Jersey? I noticed from the Rivals Seton Hall
Site, which happens to be one of the best for recruiting news in
addition to news on SHU basketball (I mistakenly said Zagsblog earlier
in error), that the playing sites are very spread apart.

to the Rumble. Maybe I am missing something but the beauty of that
event is being able to see so many games under one roof. Now it could
cost $50 in gas getting around to all the sites. It has almost become a
regional thing as opposed to a Bronx based event. Fordham to Manhattan
College to a public school, to the NJ Nets practice facility? Please
this is definitely now just for the kids playing and not for the
average hoops fans and basketball junkies.
Again
maybe I read into it wrong. But the spread out format has taking
the excitement out of me wishing to attend. Maybe I will wait for
the
Hoop Group event at Rutgers next week.

staff of affiliated hospitals takes shape

- Three people who are already top executives at Benedictine
and Kingston hospitals have been assigned prominent positions with the
new company formed to oversee the operations of the soon-to-be
affiliated facilities.
But
the company - Health Alliance Planning Inc. - is still without a
chief executive officer who ultimately will be responsible for those
operations.
Both
Thomas Dee, Benedictine’s chief executive officer, and
Michael Kaminski, Kingston Hospital’s chief executive
officer,
are expected to be candidates for the top position, according to Sean
Casey, a spokesman for the hospitals.
William
LeDoux, the co-chairman of Health Alliance Planning’s
board of directors, said the appointments are additional steps on the
path to affiliation.
“We
believe that quality care is, first and foremost, dependent
on our skilled and dedicated professionals,” LeDoux said in a
press release. “The appointment of the these talented
individuals
is an important step toward accomplishing our goals of meeting the
needs of patients and providing efficient, high-quality care.”
The
appointees are as follows.

David Scarpino, chief financial officer of Benedictine Hospital since
January, will serve the same position with Health Alliance Planning.
Scarpino also has held the position of senior vice president of finance
and chief financial officer of Kingston Hospital since 1996.
Before joining Kingston Hospital, he was chief financial officer of
Riverside Healthcare System, which includes four medical facilities in
Westchester County.
He
has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Manhattan College
and a master’s degree in finance from Pace University.

The
appointments are being made as Benedictine and Kingston hospitals
move to affiliate under a state mandate. The affiliation cannot be
fully completed, however, until the Foxhall Ambulatory Surgery Center,
where abortions and other reproductive health procedures will be
offered, is built on Kingston Hospital grounds. The center is expected
to be built by the end of the year.
Abortion
was a key stumbling block in previous merger efforts by the
two hospitals because Benedictine, a Catholic facility, forbids the
procedure, while Kingston, which is non-sectarian, allows it.

On an editorial note, we continue to see the secularization of the
once great Catholic community. Secular Progressives are putting their
'religion' in everywhere. And, the Church has either failed to see it
for what it is or have been blackmailed into silently accepting it.
Sigh! When the Middle Aged Kings tyrannized the people, they found
refuge in Holy Mother Church. Where will we go when genocide comes to
the USA? It's here. We just don't see the oppression. imho]

It’s
time, I finished my Masters at Manhattan College and have
passed the Veggie Car keys along to Dr. Rich Carbonaro. There were a
few students still at the college who were showing some interest in the
car and the veggie car project. I am sure they will continue the
project and make us all proud. Next I am off to Boston to start my
career as a Consulting Engineer. Maybe a Veggie powered hybrid plane is
next, we’ll see….
I
will pass along all blog information to Dr. Carbonaro back at MC and
hopefully they will continue to use this to update everyone on future
events and happenings of the Veggie Car.

Charles Geraghty
Mr.
Geraghty, 64, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2008
at home.
Donald
was born on September 5, 1943, to the late John Francis and Rita
Geraghty in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Manhattan College and
obtained a degree in History. He was a resident of Monroe, NY for 16
years.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Ellen. He was a wonderful
husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by a brother; sister;
6 children; and 9 grandchildren. He will be greatly and lovingly missed.
A
private family gathering will be held.
The
family is requesting that memorial donations be made to Hospice and
Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte,
NC 28204.

How very kind of you to write. Larry’s
passing is a tremendous loss to us all. He was a considerate husband
and wonderful father to our daughter, and had an extraordinary cadre of
frineds. We grieve for all things that we will miss without him . Would
you please share with me how you learned of his death?

Dear Ms. Schwartz,
Just doing one of the corporal works of mercy
— internet style. He sounded like what I’d imagine a Jasper
aspires to be. Teachers are role models. The obit reminds me to value
every day. I am truly sorry for your loss.
As far as how I found out:
Every day, in addition to automated Yahoo and
Google searches for news about my fellow Jaspers, I check the Legacy
site for Obits that mention “manhattan college” or
“Jasper”.
When I find them, I write an email to the
appropriate folks at the College. I believe they include the
deceased’s name at the Brother’s Daily Mass. The alumni
group at the College inserts the name in the Memorial Roll.
I also post the obituary in two places where our
fellow Jaspers can see in at their earliest convenience. It gives
enough specifics such that when time and distance permit, an alumni
could attend a wake, Mass, or other service. We’re a small cadre
of folks, so that’s an exception, more than a rule. Wish it was
the other way around.
I also transcribe it into a weekly distribution
called Jasper Jottings that is emailed out on Sunday mornings. It goes
to about a thousand Jaspers and is read online by another thousand. I
use free services so tracking the numbers is problematic at best.
Outside of the College, I have the largest database of MC alums. So, I
connect about 6,000 Jaspers very loosely together.
I usually put a small message in the Guest Book to let people know that we Jaspers care.
Finally, when the Legacy Guest Book goes offline,
I take a copy of it. Sometimes, family members forget to do that, and
I’ve been able to help them out.
So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Again, my condolences. I wish you good luck and
speedy healing as time softens the loss. Never a cure for the hurt;
just a gradual daily subtraction.
