ROBERT SMITH, 63
05/29/2008
Friday, May 30, 2008
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Native Staten Islander and “Mayor of
Forest Avenue” Robert (Bobby) Smith died yesterday in New York
Hospital Queens, after suffering a heart attack two weeks ago. His age
was 63.
Born the fourth of 10 children, he was reared in West Brighton. He
graduated from Brooklyn’s Xaverian High School and earned a
bachelor’s degree in economics from Manhattan College before he
was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1970 for the Vietnam War.But because
Mr. Smith’s younger brother Tommy already had volunteered for the
Marines and was serving in Vietnam, the soldier was sent to Korea,
where he was assigned to peacekeeping operations.
After his discharge in 1974, Mr. Smith returned to his old job
delivering pizzas for the former West Brighton institution Pal
Joey’s, where he worked nights and on weekends for 35 years.
He taught physical education at Sacred Heart School in West Brighton in
the 1970s and ’80s, and then opened The Courtyard, on Forest
Avenue, which he operated for about a decade.
Mr. Smith was a resident of St. George.
A world traveler with a wide range of friends, he frequently traveled
to Puerto Rico and Europe, and had friends in such far-flung spots as
Amsterdam and Paris, said his brother, Jim Smith.
“He was a free spirit and had a lot of friends,” his
brother, Jim, said. “He would just take off on a whim.”
Mr. Smith was an ardent Yankees fan, a passion that could be traced to
the days when his father, James F. Smith, would return from Yankee
Stadium and regale his children with tales of watching Babe Ruth and
Lou Gehrig. Mr. Smith was a season ticket holder for 30-plus years.
“We were all indoctrinated,” Jim Smith said. “He delighted in inviting friends and family to the games.”
Mr. Smith also was a motorcycle enthusiast, and would take frequent day
trips to the Delaware Water Gap in Pennsylvania and the Jersey Shore.
He once rode to Boston to see a Yankees-Red Sox game.
He was an active volunteer with the Pepper Martin Run on Staten Island,
and was an organizer of the annual PS 45 Courtyard Reunion in West
Brighton.
Mr. Smith was a longtime parishioner of St. Peter’s R.C. Church, New Brighton, where he was an usher.
Surviving, along with his brother, Jim, are his brothers, William,
Thomas, Raymond, Jack and Richard, and his sisters, Margaret (Peggy)
Whiteside and Mary Smith.
His brother, Edward Smith, died in 1997.
The funeral will be Monday from the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port
Richmond, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church. Burial
will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton.

As actor, dad regaled us with Heirich Heine’s “The
Laurelei’. In German! “Ick vas is vas solis
bedirten.” Then, “It was the time of the workingman’s
great strike[probably 1877], the roar of the mills was
stilled…” Despite his love for Manhattan College (Class
‘13 with Brooklyn Bishop Bryan McEntagert) dad was the leader of
a student strike. Dad intrigued us with the rapid fire German-Yiddish
saga of the farmer who couldn’t get home that night because his
pig would not go over the fence. His appeals for help went unanswered
until, “The ox began to drink the water, the water began to quench
the fire, the fire began to burn the stick, the stick began to beat the
pig, the pig got over the fence and the farmer got home that
night.” Then there were the Civil War poems and songs that his
father, a former sailor in the Union Navy had taught him.

Back in 1980, that was the motivation for the program - to honor those who achieve at the highest level in everything they do.

People: ACEC New York Honors Three at its Spring Conference
***Begin Quote***
The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York honored three
industry leaders June 9 at its annual spring conference at The Marriott
East Side in New York City. The honorees were recognized for their
exemplary leadership and contributions to New York’s consulting
engineering community.
The recipient of this year’s President’s Award, Engineer of
the Year Award and New Principal of the Year Award respectively are:
Francis J. Lombardi, Samuel (Sam) I. Schwartz and Thomas (Tom) C.
McLaughlin.
President’s Award: Francis Lombardi, P.E.
The President’s Award is given to a non-member of the council
whose leadership and business savvy best supports ACEC New York’s
mission to be the leading advocate for member companies and the
industry as a whole.
Francis Lombardi, chief engineer of the Port Authority of NY & NJ,
has long been a friend and champion of ACEC goals, objectives and
activities. In addition to the President’s Award, he was the
recipient of an ACEC New York Scholarship in 1970, and a Special Awards
Presentation (Salute to the Chief Engineers of the Port Authority) in
2000.
Lombardi started his career with the Port Authority in 1971 as an
engineering trainee. Since his appointment to the position of chief
engineer in 1995, Lombardi has been responsible for delivering the
agency’s multibillion dollar capital programs and oversees such
high-profile construction projects as the $300 million contract to
restore PATH service to lower Manhattan after the 9/11 attacks. He also
directed the engineering efforts for the redevelopment of John F.
Kennedy International Airport, which includes the $1.9 billion AirTrain
light rail project and the redevelopment of Newark International
Airport, which includes a rail link connecting the airport’s
monorail service to Amtrak and NJ Transit.
In addition to many professional memberships, he serves on several
boards, including the board of consultors to the Department of Civil
Engineering at Manhattan College, and the board of managers of the
Columbia Engineering School Alumni Association.
Frank Lombardi’s business achievements have earned him numerous
awards and recognition, but it is his commitment to education and
mentoring in the A/E/C industry, however, that has earned him his
highly regarded reputation as a concerned, caring and compassionate
individual, personally involving himself in the following activities:
the ACE Mentor Program (N.Y. and N.J.); American ORT, Engineering and
Construction Industry Chapter, the world’s largest non-sectarian
and non-governmental education and training organization; ASCE Met
Section Scholarship Luncheon; Engineering Career Day at Rutgers
University; FIRST Robotics Program; Introduce a Girl to Engineering
Day; Manhattan College Mentor Program; Polytechnic University Mentor
Program and Salvadori Center, a non-profit educational center at the
City College of New York dedicated to helping inner-city youth
appreciate science and mathematics through a hands-on study of bridges
and other structures.

JHQ: Manhattan College Begins Search For 19th President

Manhattan College Begins Search For 19th President
Br. Thomas Scanlan to step down from position in June 2009
RIVERDALE, N.Y. –Manhattan College will commence its search for
its next president this summer as Brother Thomas J. Scanlan, F.S.C.,
prepares to step down from the position in June 2009, after nearly 22
years of unparalleled leadership.
The firm Isaacson, Miller has been hired to conduct an extensive
national search, with Eugene McGrath ’63, trustee emeritus and
retired chairman & CEO of Con Edison, serving as chairman of the
search committee. A full job description can be found at
www.imsearch.com.
Scanlan, the College’s 18th and longest-tenured president, was
inaugurated on October 29, 1987. Prior to his appointment, he was vice
chancellor and chief executive officer of Bethlehem University, a
private, independent institution sponsored by the Vatican and directed
by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
Under Scanlan’s leadership, Manhattan College has undergone a
transformation that has it currently recognized as one of the premier
Catholic institutions of higher education in the nation. His presidency
has allowed Manhattan to meet the increasing demands of education in
the 21st century.
During his time in office, the College has seen a 120 percent increase
in applications and a 100-point increase in SAT scores while achieving
accreditations by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council. Five-year
programs have been added in education and engineering, and a new major,
computer engineering, has been included in the curriculum.
Manhattan College has raised over $225 million in two capital campaigns
during the past two decades and the endowment has increased tenfold. A
second new residence hall will be completed later this year, with Horan
and its new twin, East Hill Residence, housing 1,250 students.
Scanlan’s leadership led to the construction of the 24-7
state-of-the-art Mary Alice and Thomas O’Malley Library featuring
modern accommodations for study and research, which was joined to the
renovated and updated Cardinal Hayes Pavilion. A new multi-level
parking garage also will be completed in summer 2008, and athletic
facilities have been upgraded, including a new playing service at
Gaelic Park.
In 1987, Scanlan was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifici Cross from Pope John Paul II for service to the
Catholic Church in the Holy Land. A 20-year veteran in the field of
education, he was director of finance and education for the New York
Province of the Brothers of the Christian Schools from 1978-1981, where
he presided over the Province’s 14 educational institutions.
He served for eight years at Queen of Peace High School in North
Arlington, N.J., first as a member of the faculty, then as vice
principal, and from 1972-1975, as the principal. During the late 1970s,
he was an instructor in organizational behavior for the Manhattan
College’s school of business.
A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Scanlan earned a doctorate in
organizational behavior from Columbia University; a Master’s
degree from New York University, and a bachelor’s degree from The
Catholic University of America. His many professional affiliations
include membership with the Association of Catholic Colleges and
Universities, American Council on Education, National Collegiate
Athletic Association and the New York State Commission on Independent
Colleges and Universities.

Catholic scholars try to bolster unions
By Rich Barlow
June 14, 2008

The collision of an election year with economic distress - a housing
slump, soaring gas prices, shaky corporate-sponsored health and pension
plans, among other factors - has made the state of the American worker
a campaign issue. One hundred and twelve years ago, in an era of
similar uncertainty, William Jennings Bryan, fueled partly by his
devout Protestant faith, ran for president (lost) on a pro union
platform. more stories like this Since then, unions have ascended and
waned. Now, a group of Catholic academics and clergy wants to
reinvigorate them and its members, citing their church’s teaching
as support. Founded by a religion professor at Manhattan College in New
York, Catholic Scholars for Worker Justice has several Massachusetts
residents on its steering committee.

[JR: More of that 'social justice' stuff. I remember hearing it at MC
decades ago. It didn't make sense then; still doesn't today. How do
they feel about the law of gravity? I can no more assure the poor of
what they call a 'living wage' than I can make the weightless. You'd
think that even a rudimentary study of economics would show them that
redefining the scale on the thermometer doesn't make the temperature
change. If they really want to help the poor, lower taxes - increase
the economy - cut the minimum wage. JFK hit the nail on the head with
"A rising tide lifts all boats". Putting folks on the dole ain't
'social justice'; neither for the folks paying, not the folks
receiving. It's Socialism. And, we have seen how well that worked in
Russia, Germany, China, and North Korea. And, here to a certain extent.

Unlikely to be him. If he was born in 1967 and is Class of 2005 (assume
that means undergraduate class), he would have been ~ 38 upon
graduation.
