Neighbor Rescues Woman from Burning House
Published: July 21, 2008

*** begin quote ***

Dworak yelled for Mary but got no response. As he searched, the fire grew and debris started falling around him. “I didn’t know what to do. I yelled for her a couple more times, and then I heard her.” Disoriented and incapacitated, Mary was sprawled on the floor in the back of her house, so Dworak picked her up and carried her to safety.

While others call what Dworak did heroic, he says anyone would’ve done the same.

CARTOON: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) does a book cover

Subject: Jerry’s new book cover

To one and all: I may have mentioned it to some of you already, but this week is the publication date for a new book called “Barack Obama Is Your New Bicycle”. The publishers apparently “googled” the Barack Obama cartoons out there on the internet, and chose one of mine to grace the cover. (See sample below.) The author, Mathew Honan, is a computer tech reporter from San Francisco, and a veteran blogger. His wife, an avid cyclist, became a fervent Obama campaign volunteer - with an enthusiasm she usually reserved for a new bicycle. Hence the title.

Honan decided to put together a whimsical website spoofing people’s sometimes irrational rapture over Obama, and it became an internet sensation. So Penguin approached Honan about putting the website out as “hard copy” (in book form). The book is available this week at local bookstores everywhere. You can order it online from http://www.bordersstores.com (Borders Books), http://www.barnesandnoble.com or directly from the publisher at http://us.penguingroup.com . I’ll keep you posted on more news. Thanks again for your interest, Jerry Breen www.newbreen.com

Philip Mason

Philip Mason, 59 BRUNSWICK — Philip Mason, 59, of Brunswick, died Sunday, August 3, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, on June 15, 1949, to John and Maryann (Franke) Mason. In 1959 he moved to Rutherford, N.J., where he attended St. Mary’s High School. He received a degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College. He served in the Army National Guard. On Sept. 23, 1972, he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Dunn. In 1973 they moved to Maine, living in Veazie and Winslow. In 1990 he and his family moved to Brunswick. He worked as an engineer for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well as Cianbro Corporation. For the past 25 years, he was employed at Sappi Fine Paper North America, most recently as an IT Area Manager. He expressed his deep faith through involvement at the local and deanery levels of the Catholic Church. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Winslow, and St. Charles Borromeo Church, Brunswick. He served as Eucharistic Minister, Parish Council President, and Chairman of the Finance Commission. For many years, he was a member of parochial school boards and taught religious education to teens. In addition, he served on the Diocesan Pastoral Council under Bishop Geary. He was appointed by Bishop Malone to the Diocesan Planning Committee and then elected as Coordinator of the Cluster 15 Committee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 25 years. At St. Charles Lenten Suppers, he was affectionately known as ‘Potato Man.’ If only one phrase could describe him, it would be ‘a genuine and gentle man’–sincerely interested in everyone he met. He was a true teacher and mentor, whether to his Boy Scout troop in Winslow or his co-workers at Sappi. Lending a helping hand was second nature to him. For over 20 summers he volunteered at the New England Music Camp in Sidney, including chairing its Pops Concert Committee. Most of all he truly loved his family and could speak for hours about his wife and three daughters. A friend commented, ‘It is rare to find someone so dedicated to his work and the company he worked for, and to have all the love and passion for his own family and personal life.’ Another friend shared, ‘We’ll miss his wit and sweet smile.’ Surviving are his wife, Peggy; three daughters, Amy Saharia and her husband, Kapil, of Silver Spring, Md., Sarah of Waltham, Mass., and Kristen of New Orleans, La.; two sisters, Joanne of Sydney, Australia and Jennifer of Greenwich, Conn.; and one brother, Jeffrey and his wife, Elsie, of Des Plains, Ill. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick. A Life Celebration Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 8, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 132 McKeen Street, Brunswick, with burial at the Growstown Cemetery on Church Road. A reception in the St. Charles Parish Hall will follow the services. The family has established a memorial scholarship in his name at the New England Music Camp (NEMC). Over the last few days we have seen two major brawls in the world of sports. The WNBA brawl was fairly fascinating to watch. The biggest story to come out of it was the fact the WNBA was getting publicity, granted it was not good publicity. Telelvision host Jimmy Kimmel on his late night show even went so far to replay the tape with a different announcer voiceover saying “Oh my God! This is the most action in a game in WNBA history! Why isn’t anybody watching this right now?”

OBITUARY

Brother Daniel F. Casey, FSC, 74

Former diocesan superintendent of schools

Posted Aug 7, 2008

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Christian Brother Daniel F. Casey, 74, died July 30 at St. Antoine Residence. He was a member of the Christian Brothers for almost 56 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John F. and Mary Casey.

He graduated from the Cleary School in Providence, and St. Raphael Academy, Pawtucket, and received a bachelor of arts degree from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., in 1954; a master of arts degree in the classics in 1964 from Manhattan College, New York City, from which he also received a master of arts degree in theology in 1969; and a certificate of advanced graduate studies from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA.

Brother Casey entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Barrytown, New York, in 1952, and pronounced his first vows there. He professed his final vows in 1959.

He began his long career in education as a teacher at Good Shepherd School, Bronx, New York, and ministered at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, Brooklyn, New York, and later at St. Mary High School, Waltham, MA., where he became principal in 1964.

He later served as a missionary and teacher at St. Joseph School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 1971, he became the headmaster of the school and simultaneously, the auxiliary provincial for that region.

Following a year of advanced studies at Boston College during the 1975-76 academic year, Brother Casey became principal of St. Raphael Academy in 1976, where he served for four years. In 1980, he became the principal of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, and at the end of his second term as principal, returned to Providence, where he served as an educational consultant and later as the superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Providence from 1987 to 1996 during the administration of Bishop Louis E. Gelineau.

“He was certainly dedicated to the church and to the Lord,” said Bishop Gelineau, noting that Brother Casey “was a great religious” who always used his many gifts to benefit the diocese, the Catholic Church and God.

“He was most helpful and inspired me,” the bishop recalled. “He was one of the holiest men I have ever known.”

The bishop noted that Brother Casey was a most capable administrator who “had great vision” and the ability to meet all challenges and find solutions to problems.

Bishop Gelineau added that Brother Casey also inspired the staff and residents at St. Antoine Residence with his positive attitude and graceful acceptance of his illness.

In 1996, Brother Casey was named auxiliary provincial for the Christian Brothers Long Island-New England province, and was subsequently elected provincial. After serving a four-year term in that capacity, he resumed his missionary career, and served as president and vice chancellor of Bethlehem University in Bethlehem, Palestine. The university was founded by Pope Paul VI and entrusted to the Brothers of the Christian Schools to provide higher education to members of the Arab community, both Catholic and Muslim.

Brother Casey ministered in the Holy Land from 2005 until earlier this year, when he resigned from the university because of declining health.

In addition to his religious community, Brother Casey is survived by a sister, Barbara Casey; and two brothers, Edward and John Casey. He was the brother of the late Robert and Richard Casey.

A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul. Burial was in Christian Brothers Cemetery, Narragansett.

Dear John,

NY LAW JOURNAL

p. 1, col. 1

In Brief:

High Court to Hear Appeal in America’s Cup Case

An attorney for a California yacht club has filed a notice of appeal with the Court of Appeals challenging last month’s ruling declaring a Spanish rival as the official challenger to the America’s Cup race. James V Kearney of Latham & Watkins filed the notice Tuesday. His client, the Golden Gate Yacht Club, had an automatic right to appeal based on the 3-2 margin of the Appellate Division, First Department’s ruling in Golden Gate Yacht Club v. Société Nautique de Genève, 4015-4016. Golden Gate, the official challenger during the last America’s Cup, argued unsuccessfully before the First Department that the Spanish club, Club Náutico Español de Vela, was not the valid challenger because it chid not conduct annual regattas on the sea, as rules require (NYLJ, July 30). The two clubs are vying to oppose the two-time cup winner, the Swiss club Société Nautique de Genève, in next year’s race.

Subject: Fw: News from Knights of Columbus

Knights of Columbus convention delegates adopt resolutions challenging Catholic office-holders on abortion, affirming marriage as union of one man and one woman

(Quebec City, Quebec) - Delegates to the annual international convention of the Knights of Columbus today adopted a resolution opposing “any governmental action or policy that promotes abortion, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, euthanasia, assisted suicide and other offenses against life.”

The delegates also challenged “our fellow Catholics who are elected officials to be true to the faith they claim to profess by acting bravely and publicly in defense of life, affirming with Pope Benedict XVI that ‘there can be no room for purely private religion.’”

The resolution stated that the organization reaffirms its “commitment to building a culture of life by promoting policies that favor the family,” and reaffirmed the organization’s “long standing policy of not inviting to any Knights of Columbus event persons, especially public officials or candidates for public office, who do not support the legal protection of unborn children.”

The resolution on life issues follows by several days the opening convention address by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, in which he called on Catholic voters to “stop accommodating pro-abortion politicians,” and encouraged them to “say ‘no’ to every candidate of every political party who supports abortion.”

Delegates also adopted a resolution calling for “legal and constitutional protection . . . for the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others.”

The resolution declares that “marriage is a natural institution based on ancient human values that have evolved over time into a unique and deeply rooted social, legal and religious institution,” and that it “reflects the natural biological complementarity between man and woman which predates the state and which is woven into the social and religious fabric of every major culture and society.”

Marriage between man and woman “provides the most favorable environment in which to protect the rights and the best interests of children,” the resolution stated.

Convention delegates adopted resolutions dealing with other public policy issues as well, including building a culture of life, religious liberty, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, decency on the Internet and in the media, Catholic education, and the Pledge of Allegiance. The texts of all the resolutions can be found at:

[JR: CV brings up one of my "truth in labeling" arguments about politicians. "US modern day people" in "public service". Today's "Catholic" politicians are less "Catholic" than I am. "Catholic" was supposed to have something to do with the Pope and the doctrine. Living an exemplary life. Honor, Truth, Faith, Hope, and Charity. Ya gotta be joshing me. Now it's above my paygrade to judge folks. But in the case of politicians, I'll make an exception. How a supposedly "Catholic" politician can advocate for Federally funded abortions escapes me? How the American bishops don't call them on it also escapes me? Pedophile priests maybe. Cushy tax exempt status. I don't know. But to misquote Sherlock Homes, that dog ain't barking! The Gooferment has neutered all opposition to its Socialism. Catholic Charities, Catholic Hospitals, Catholic Insurance -- yeah the KofC invent Life Insurance for poor people. All under the Gooferment thumb. And the crown jewel of Catholicism -- the Catholic School. All gone. For all intents and purposes. If Catholics can't educate the next generation, it's a dying breed. And, those schools were they can eek out an exsitence are mandated to teach the Secular Progressive pap of the Gooferment. I'm glad to see the KofC call these supposedly "Catholic" politicians on it. Unfortunately, too little way way too late imho.]

[p.s., Maybe CV should become the Curmudgeon replacement for the end note. He certainly tweaks my horn! What about it CV? One irritation a week. You can have a spiffy ecard for your signature.]

YOOOOOOU’RE FIIIIIIIIRED!!!

Fired.

Let go.

Released.

Canned.

Sacked.

Outsourced.

We wish you luck in your future endeavors.

Well whichever term you like, that’s my current state right now.

*** and ***

Right after I graduated college, I had another internship for IBM, but more than that I also had another job coming my way that I had a lot of fun with. I became the organic lab assistant for my Alma mater Manhattan College. Now granted, I was just starting my graduate school so this job wasn’t going to be anything permanent but it enabled me to stay busy, learn more about chemistry and make a lot of really cool friends. The best part about that job was being able to actually help kids learn organic chemistry. And a lot of the kids there were really cool just to hang out with and chill, many of them I’m still friends with today. And they all say that the organic classes when I was there they learned a lot more and had a lot more fun at the same time, and in the long run isn’t that really what it’s all about.

*** and ***

But for now…I am sort of looking forward to just taking a well-deserved break.

[JR: Any one know a Chem job for a fellow Jasper? Networking with him could help him decompress (I know how much that is ALWAYS needed). I sent him my "turkey farm" stuff.]

MNEWS: bringing in her softball team from Manhattan College

Walking for a very good cause

Friday, August 8, 2008

***Begin Quote***

You know the old sports cliché a walk is as good as a hit? This walk is a grand slam.

The American Cancer Society will sponsor its sixth annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Oct. 26 at Bergen Community College at 9 a.m. The ACS is reaching out to North Jersey softball teams (or any other athletic team) that would like to raise money and participate.

Already the softball coaches at Immaculate Heart Academy (Anthony LaRezza), Immaculate Conception (Jeff Horohonich), Wood-Ridge (Jill Clementi) and Hackensack (Joelle DellaVolpe) have committed to bring their teams to compete in a different type of event. Meaghan Asselta will also be bringing in her softball team from Manhattan College.

The idea of incorporating local teams was the brainchild of ACS event coordinator MaryAnne Lopreato, whose daughters played softball locally. “I thought it would be a good idea to get the softball teams included because one, the girls are already committed to community service by nature being part of a team,” Lopreato said. “And also, I thought it would serve a dual purpose to help them get to learn more about cancer and get funds for our cause.”

“It’s a great cause and you know especially being at an all girls school it’s important that the girls keep informed on this,” said Horohonich.

The event officially starts with a kickoff breakfast Wednesday at Bergen Community College. Lopreato said there would be a cancer survivor speaker and team leaders would get kits on the impact Making Strides has had and the best way to organize a team and raise funds. There is no minimum amount required to walk and no registration fee.

The walk has gotten bigger every year and last year raised $489,000 locally. It will be held in conjunction with several other walks across the nation that weekend (October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month). If interested in joining the walk, e-mail Paramus.Strides@cancer.org.

“Any other area team can still join and can call me at 201-457-3418,” said Lopreato. “Let’s see who the real champions are.”

Comment on JHQ: Email solicitation for a “MC Directory” is legit by Ed Crist (MC1999)

Different concern:

I received a phone call tonight (8:00 PM, Friday, interrupted dinner right on time), asking for info for the directory and asking me to pay for it with a credit card.

I did, but my wife was skeptical, which is why I’m here. Is this on the level as well?

A prompt answer would be appreciated, it doesn’t take long to clean out the account (debit card).

Thanks,

Ed Crist, ‘99

Peter Tubic ignored a $50 parking fine in 2004, and on Monday, it cost him his $245,000 house.

*** and ***

Among other health issues he’s dealing with, Peter Tubic has had headaches dealing with his van, which is parked in his driveway without a license plates. He faces foreclosure on his home and is in a dispute with the city over citations he received for the van’s lack of plates.

A Milwaukee man received a $50 fine for parking a van with no license plates in his driveway. He ignored the ticket for more than four years, and last week the city foreclosed on his house.

In what city officials believe is the first case of its kind, the city foreclosed on Tubic’s house on W. Verona Court after repeated attempts to collect the fine - which over the years had escalated to $2,600 - had failed.

This must be more of that “loving” “Social Justice” that you Socialist love to throw in my face. I’d call it “gooferment run amuck”.

What the Socialists fail to mention, and maybe they don’t see it, is the gun in the room. When someone dares to live their own life as the Good Lord gave them using their brains and free will, some one fo their betters, aka Socialists, will want to tell them what to do “for their own good” or “for the children” or “for something else”. If they don’t listen, then the ‘law’ gts involved. Socialists are too effite to get their own hands dirty so they have politicians and bureaucrats to do their dirty work for them.

Why if I come to your house and take your wallet is it “stealing”, BUT me an my ten friends “elect” someone who goes and does the same thing is it called “taxes”?

Huh?

Bottom line, if you don’t comply, slave, there is a gun in the room pointed at your head to MAKE you comply.

More of that there friendly “social justice”! I don’t think it’s so “social” and slavery sure ain’t “justice”!
