Last week roughly everyone I know graduated from college. I was an usher at the baccalaureate mass and the actual ceremony, and I had to make sure to tell everyone to watch their step, yet half the people did not listen to me and tripped anyway. And now basically all of my Manhattan College friends have graduated. Except Maura. And Christine might as well have not graduated since I will be seeing her everyday of my life for the next year or so. Yay sharing a bedroom. Which reminds me, we’re moving into our apartment next weekend. We need to get our cable/internet set up. Eek.

I need the query “manhattan college” run once a week for the previous week. I used to run it every Wednesday. A previous employer has given up that contract. So we’re cut off from that source. All you have to do is email me the output and I’ll parse it. This is a low budget non-profit operation so there’s no budget for an expensive news gathering options. Your help would be appreciated.

Ryan has coached at Manhattan for nearly 20 years. After serving two years as the women’s assistant coach and two years as the women’s head coach, Ryan has spent the last more than 10 years as an assistant coach in Manhattan’s combined track & field program.

In 2003, Ryan was named as one of the recipients of the 2003 AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year Award. Festival of Faith and Writing, 2008: Paul Mariani and Beena Kamlani

*** begin quote ***

Paul Mariani and Beena Kamlani discussed the author-editor relationship. The interaction between the two was fun to watch–showing a clear mutual respect, and even enjoyment, that had developed through times of counterpoint and tension.

Mariani, currently at Boston College, is the author of 16 books, and has a biography of Hopkins coming out soon. (He also published a book on Hopkins in 1970.) He’s written six books of poetry and five biographies.

***and***

Mariani began with a brief bio. He attended Manhattan College in the Bronx, where he first encountered Hopkins. He grew up in the working class, has three sons, and spent thirty years teaching at the University of Massachusetts.

In February, 1970, he published a commentary on Hopkin’s sonnets. He read Hopkins as he rocked his son Paul’s cradle; Paul has grown up to become a Jesuit priest. (laughter) Critics often missed the sacramental heart, the search in Hopkin’s work.

Hopkins was raised Anglican, was touched by Newman’s movement, the Oxford Movement, and went to Catholicism.

Mariani (with a touch of humor) says he went through purgatory writing a biography of William Carlos Williams, and hell writing bios of Robert Lowell, John Berryman, and Hart Crane (which included two suicides). All these men were searchers. Hopkins is his Paradiso.

He did a retreat at Weston in March, 2000. Father Cartwright asked him, “Would you be willing to turn your life completely over to Christ?” This terrified Mariani. After some reflection, he decided, “Why the hell not? I’ve screwed it up.”

Once he surrendered, he heard a voice telling him, “Go to B.C.!” He interpreted this as meaning Boston, and consulted with Father Cartwright. The Father advised him to continue the retreat and see if it kept coming up.

Three weeks later, Mariani wrote a letter to the President of Boston College, a priest. Nothing happened for three more weeks. Then a response: “I’m intrigued. Come and see me.” In his meeting with the President, he was offered a Chair.

He went on a 30 day retreat, where he read a book by Hopkins he had been given, and understood the poet for the first time. Terror. Consolation. The insights were not just Catholic, but out of common experience, unity. Out of that experience came Thirty Days, a memoir. He went to Boston College the following fall.

Mariani met Kamlani in person for the first time today. He’d expected [a gorgon?]. (laughter)

He had heard Kathleen Norris speak earlier in the day. A writer can have acedia–try to bully, sweet talk, get money and run.

He has been a caretaker for his father-in-law, mother-in-law, and father. It takes a toll, a human toll. Caregiving deepens, empties, adds richness. He sees diamond coming in Kathleen Norris; he hadn’t seen her for six years. She’s radiating the face of God. You become deeper, even if you don’t see it in yourself.

REPORTING FROM THE FACEBOOK DESK

Savage, Christian (MC2007)

*** begin quote ***

Thanks, Everyone, for your feedback. I appreciate it greatly. Sorry for “spamming” you all again, but I received A LOT of feedback so I just thought it would be easier to explain my plan in this mass thread.

However, I don’t believe you understand the concept of what my plan would do.

Yes, it would “triple the Capital Gains Tax” but it will REPEAL (outright) the double-taxation of Shareholder DIVIDENDS.

Think about it: if the Gov’t passed such a law, it would be what economists call a “Negative Externality vs. Positive Externality.” The publicly-traded corporations in the Free Market would respond by deciding to distribute a fixed percentage of their corporate profits in order to avoid paying the higher Capital Gains Tax which they only have to pay when stocks are SOLD.

As a result, investor CONFIDENCE & DEMAND for stocks would sound more attractive to the general public who would see an opportunity to receive “dividend checks” tax-free even if the Company’s stock would fall. More stocks the company sells, the more investment capital is

available for business expansion. So, in essence, NOBODY will pay the “tripled Capital Gains Tax.” [ ; ) ]

best,

Christian

*** end quote ***

Dear Christian MC2007.

Sigh, ahh to be young and idealistic again.

Sorry! I can NOT buy the ’solution’. On so many levels, I’d suggest that I think you are SO wrong.

First, your ’solution’ presumes that it is moral for the gang that calls itself ‘government’ to steal from people engaged in non-aggressive behavior.

Second, you overlook the fact that folks have made decisions based on the current set of rules. And, you’re going to jerk the rug out from their plans. because you think this is ‘better’!

Third, you ignore that no matter how perfect your plan is, someone else is going to write, interpret, implement and enforce it. Your ‘pig’ will go into one side and ’sausage’ will come out the other end. Any resemblance after the politicians and their lobbyists get finished will be purely coincidental.

Bottom line, look to reduce government, and make us all free.

Eliminate the capital gains tax completely, it is just taxing us on the Feds inflation. Eliminate income taxes, not just the dividend taxation, it is immoral.

imho,

fjohn68

p.s., I’m old. You youngsters are in need of another American revolution. You’ve all been brainwashed by ‘education’.
