[JR: Clearly if you're a voter in Pawling, then this Jasper would like your support.2 for 2 seats? Why waste the money on an election? When elected, I hope our favorite Jasper in this races looks into that. Will we ever have two Jaspers running against each other? That will confuse the Jasper Jottings endorsement process.]

JEMAIL: Vaccarino, Carmine (MC1957) finds an inspiring NYT story about "Monks"

FROM THE EMAIL BOX:

Here’s a story from the NY Times of all places that actually depicts the Church in a positive light.  Read here for some encouragement on what is happening with vocations.  And spread the word;  you might even inspire a dormant vocation.

Carmine

[JR: I agree. For the Socialist rag to cast Holy Mother  Church in a positive light means that some editor will get fired! If it does inspire vocations, so much the better. If it inspires contributions or courageous actions for good, even better. Great find. Thanks.]

Monks Who Play Punk

James Estrin/The New York Times

Father Luke in his room at St. Joseph’s Friary in Harlem.

By JOHN MITCHELL

Published: April 22, 2007

IT was 9 o’clock on a wintry Saturday night, and in the dimly lighted basement of Our Lady of Good Counsel, a Roman Catholic church on 90th Street and Second Avenue, the chatter of more than 400 young people competed with the din of a rock band. Those not shouting in one another’s ears were dancing, singing, laughing and jumping up and down while trying not to spill their cups of coffee.

“Who has ever heard of a monk playing funk music?” shouted Brother Agostino Torres, a 30-year-old friar wearing sandals and a hooded gray robe. Hands shot into the air.

“O.K., all right, but I’ll bet you never heard of this one,” Brother Agostino went on. “Because tonight, we’re going to have some monks play some punk!” Half a dozen other bushy-bearded, gray-frocked friars broke into a cacophony of drums, bass, saxophone and electric guitar.

John,

I would like to know if anyone knows where Jim and Kathy Sullivan live now. We stopped getting Christmas cards a few years ago. They lived in in Happauge, NY. Jim graduated 59 EE. I think Jim was a brother in Pi Rho Phi. I was privileged to be the best man in their wedding close to fifty years ago. Roni and I miss their simple Christmas greeting and hope all is well with them. If anyone knows, let me know through Jasper Jottings.

Bill Rodgers will add to Crowley aura

May 20, 2008

By Tom Haley Herald Staff

***Begin Quote***

There are some events in Rutland you look forward to because you are certain you’ll see people you know.

*** and ***

And if you are an early riser, there is always the Crowley Brothers Memorial Road Race.

*** and ***

But the Crowley Memorial Brothers Road Race traces its origins to some pretty famous guys in their own right.

They would be Clarence DeMar and Frank Crowley.

DeMar won a record seven Boston Marathons and Crowley, a Rutlander, was an NCAA All-American distance runner at Manhattan College who competed in the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The story is that DeMar and Crowley challenged one another to a race from Proctor to Rutland in the late 1920s. The younger Crowley defeated DeMar and that race continued for a number of years.

The race ceased for a bit but was revived in 1976 with the help of local people like Mike Canty, Bill Reardon, John Cioffredi and Frank’s brother, Joe Crowley.

I landed back in Rutland in 1987 and wrote about the race a number of different years. I have plenty of favorites, but one year still stands out.

It was in 2000 when the race was dead. There was a brief notice in the Rutland Herald that the race would not be held that year.

Then, the same week that the race would normally be held, Rutland’s Lincoln Fenn walked into this office and proclaimed the race would go on after all. Fenn and Hugh Short, both former Rutlland educators and track coaches, felt the race should be held without a break and they threw something together to make certain the tradition would not take a year off. There was no entry fee, prizes or commemorative T-shirts or electronic timing. There were only 20 runners.

But it was a race from the heart and miraculously it happened.

And talk about local flavor. John Daly, a Rutland High runner and NCAA Division II All-American distance runner from Southeast Missouri State University, just happened to be back from St. Louis for a family reunion, and won the race. Daly was married by the late Joe Crowley when Joe was a justice of the peace and the race is named for brothers Joe, Frank and Larry Crowley.

*** and ***

The Crowley Brothers Memorial Road Race has a lot going for it. It has history, big names like Crowley, DeMar and now Rodgers, and it has a hilly, challenging layout that begins in one of the prettiest little communities anywhere.

SACRED HEART HOSPITAL PRESIDENT RECEIVES HONORARY DEGREE

Dr. Frank Sparandero receives honorary doctor of science degree

***Begin Quote***

ALLENTOWN, PA – DeSales University awarded Dr. Frank Sparandero, President and CEO of Sacred Heart Hospital, an honorary doctor of science degree on Saturday, May 17, 2008. DeSales University held its 40th Commencement exercises at 11:00 a.m. in Billera Hall.

Dr. Sparandero has participated in a number of community health ventures to address the issues of the uninsured and underinsured populations in the greater Lehigh Valley area. While at Sacred Heart Hospital, Dr. Sparandero has assisted in the development of a health clinic at the Allentown Rescue Mission. This clinic is run by the Physician Assistant Program at DeSales University and support for laboratory and x-ray testing, along with availability of medications, is provided by Sacred Heart Hospital. He has also become involved in the effort to bring a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to the Lehigh Valley. FQHCs enhance the delivery of primary care services in underserved urban and rural communities and include community health centers, public housing centers, outpatient health programs, and programs serving migrants and the homeless. Payment for FQHC services are based upon reasonable costs and include a per-visit, all-inclusive amount. Sacred Heart Hospital is in the midst of the FQHC application process with other area hospitals such as Lehigh Valley Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital.

On behalf of Sacred Heart Hospital, Dr. Sparandero has also been involved in a regional health department initiative. Though Allentown and Bethlehem have their own health bureaus, health officials from Lehigh and Northampton Counties are joining forces to create a new bi-county health department to provide better access to public health services for residents in both counties.

To improve access to health care for both the uninsured and the underinsured, Dr. Sparandero also sits on the Greater Lehigh Valley Access to Care Task Force, a group focused on raising awareness about the need for high quality health care and health insurance for residents in the Lehigh Valley.

Dr. Sparandero earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Manhattan College and his medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine. He served his residency in internal medicine at Staten Island University Hospital and earned a Master of Public Health from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He also completed flight training as a flight surgeon at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and was a research associate in hyperbaric medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

After working in private practice in internal medicine, Dr. Sparandero served as clinical assistant professor of medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

He served as a flight surgeon and medical squadron commander in the U.S. Air Force Reserve (retired). Before coming to Sacred Heart Hospital, Dr. Sparandero was Vice President for Medical Affairs and Senior Director of Occupational Medicine and Health Services at Merck & Co., Inc.

Currently, Dr. Sparandero’s interests include evidence-based medicine and management, organizational behavior and management, community health, and worker health and productivity. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He also serves on the Pennsylvania Catholic Health Association Board of Directors.

Manhattan College Awards Undergraduate Degrees At 166th Commencement

***Begin Quote***

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College awarded close to 700 degrees in some 40 major fields of study from its five schools in arts, business, education, engineering and science at its 166th Undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 18. Students who completed their studies in September 2007, February 2008 and May 2008 participated in the ceremony in the College’s Draddy Gymnasium.

During the ceremony, an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters was presented to William F. Baker, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Educational Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).

In his keynote address, Baker told the graduates, “You are fortunate to have been educated at Manhattan College, and to be in New York City gives you a real advantage in a complex world. It may be hard for you to appreciate now, but think about why Manhattan College has produced so many famous graduates for a place its size. Being in New York City and having terrific faculty and an administration with values makes this place so special.”

Baker has been at the head of EBC since 1987. During his tenure, the station has grown and created new programs, such as Charlie Rose, City Arts and Religion and Ethics Newsweekly. He established the Educational Resources Center, which has become America’s most prolific teacher trainer in multimedia technologies.

Baker’s career spans four decades. Prior to assuming his current position, he was president of Westinghouse Television and chairman of the cable programming companies. During his 10 years at Westinghouse, five cable networks were launched, including Discover Channel and the Disney Channel. He established the successful national program PM Magazine and introduced Oprah Winfrey as a talk show host.

Petrides grad leads his team of volunteers from Goldman Sachs at annual games

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Richard Ranelli was up early last Saturday.

Real early.

Getting-up-for-work early.

The 23-year-old analyst at Goldman Sachs rises early every weekday, so you couldn’t blame him for wanting a few extra winks on a Saturday.

But last Saturday, he just had to get to Monsignor Farrell for the Staten Island Special Olympics Area Games.

Ranelli was a co-captain for the team of 35 other Goldman Sachs employees that volunteered to work the event.

“It’s definitely the sacrifice of a Saturday,” said Ranelli. “But it’s a worthy sacrifice.”

The Games, celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, had 515 athletes and over 200 volunteers. And Ranelli wasn’t missing out this year.

“Goldman has been helping at this event for years,” he said. “The sign-up sheet fills up fast, because it’s something everyone wants to be a part of, so this year, I got on early.”

Last year, Ranelli missed out, ending up at an animal shelter in Brooklyn, where he went on a couple of dog-walking missions. As an athlete — he played baseball and basketball at Petrides before becoming captain of the crew team at Manhattan College — it was easier for Ranelli to fit in at a sporting event.

“It’s nice to be able to give something back,” said Ranelli. “Being involved in sports, that’s definitely a big reason I wanted to get involved with this.

“It’s worth getting up in the morning. I wanted to be there. When you see the look on the faces of the athletes, it’s just great.”

CARTOON: My latest Obama caricature is not really a political cartoon

John: My latest Obama caricature is not really a political cartoon.

Some folks in Oregon hired me to do the face of Obama for a new “product” - really a gag gift - called “OBAMAir”. Their company usually sells bags of frozen food. Now they’re offering bags of Obama’s own breath, captured at some of his recent campaign stops and packaged for mass consumption, at $10 a bag! (I’m told that in the event of a “water landing”, it can be used as a flotation device.) You can buy them online at their website, www.obamair.com . Check it out; it’s hilariously funny. - Jerry Breen (Jasper ‘71)

Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and! click on ‘donating a mammogram’ for free (pink window in the middle).

This doesn’t cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Here’s the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Memorial Day weekend

My dear fellow Jaspers:

I hope we all take a moment on Monday.

Not because some politician tells us we should at 3pm for their agenda. But, because we allowed undeclared wars to happen in our name and good people acted on what we said we needed.

I plan to take that moment to:

* Pray for all the boys and girls who gave their lives for what they believed in.

* Recognize the ongoing sacrifices being made.

* Value the ‘breakage’ in the wounded; insist that ‘we’ do right by them.

* Grieve with all the families that are picking up afterwards.

* And, finally, hope that we all begin to hold the politicians accountable for their words and actions that put ‘our people’ in harm’s way in our name.

You know if I could I’d bring them all home on Tuesday – Wednesday latest.

I will pray they all come home in one piece.

And that ‘we’ get back to a Department of Defense and return to the Constitutional America of Liberty. We seem to have lost our way.

What will you do – or what did you do – on Monday? Picnic and party? Listen to more political rhetoric? Forget it all and vacation? Tube out?

Sorry if I’ve offended,
Your Collector In Chief
sadly, fjohn68
