From: Peter E. Dans [1957]

To: John Reinke (1968)
Subject: Christians in the Movies

Hi John:

I hope all is well with you and your family. I thought I’d let you know about my latest writing venture, a portrayal of Christians from 1905 to 2007 (See below for the description).. Despite having successfully published three books and having an agent, it has been difficult to secure a mainstream publisher. I think the word “Christians” turns them off since atheists are more likely to get published today. If anyone on the Jasper Jottings email list has any suggestions or knows publishers or editors that might be interested in taking a look at the manuscript, I’d love to hear about it.

Thanks for keeping our alums together. Keep up the great work.

Best regards,

Peter

From Saints to Sinners: 100 Years of Christians in the Movies

From the Life and Passion of Jesus Christ (1905) to Amazing Grace (2007), Dans vividly traces the arc in film portrayal of Christians from reverence to, at times, outright ridicule over the past century. He explores reasons for the change: the abolition of the Hays Motion Picture Code; the demise of the National Legion of Decency; and associated profound societal and cultural changes. In addition to about 100 in depth reviews, there are brief out-takes of about 75 lesser Christian-themed films as well short commentaries on related subjects, e.g., the real story behind Inherit the Wind; the treatment of abortion in film and portraits of actors, directors and writers most prominently associated with films treating Christianity and 100 still photographs. Dans is a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University, film critic for Pharos, the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society quarterly journal and author of Doctors in the Movies: Boil the Water and Just Say Aah! (Medi-Ed Press, 2000), about how doctors have been portrayed in movies from 1931-2000. He also has written a children’s book, Perry’s Baltimore Adventure: A Birds-eye View of Charm City and a memoir/photography book: Life on the Lower East Side; Photographs by Rebecca Lepkoff.

JEMAIL: Vaccarino, Carmine [MC1957] shares news of Knights of Columbus founder “venerable”

Carmine.Vaccarino wrote:

Urgent News for Knights of Columbus

Vatican declares Knights of Columbus founder “venerable”

Fr. Michael J. McGivney would be first American-born priest to be declared a saint

New Haven, CT - March 16, 2008 - Pope Benedict XVI Saturday approved a decree recognizing the heroic virtue of Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. The pope’s declaration significantly advances the priest’s process toward sainthood and gives the parish priest the distinction of “Venerable Servant of God.” If canonized, Fr. McGivney would be the first American born priest to be so honored.

“All of us who are members of the Knights of Columbus are profoundly grateful for this recognition of the holiness of our founder,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “The strength of the Knights of Columbus today is a testament to his timeless vision, his holiness and his ideals.”

Worried about the religious faith and financial stability of immigrant families, Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus with the help of several men of St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven in 1882 to help strengthen the faith of the men of his parish and to provide financial assistance in the event of their death to the widows and orphans they left behind. He was also known for his tireless work among his parishioners.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., Aug. 12, 1852, Michael Joseph McGivney, was the first of Patrick and Mary (Lynch) McGivney’s 13 children, six of whom died in infancy or early childhood. His parents, natives of Ireland, had immigrated to the United States during the 19th century. Patrick was a molder in a Waterbury brass mill, where Michael himself worked for a brief time as a child to help support his family.

From an early age, however, he realized a calling to the Catholic priesthood. After studying in several seminaries, he was ordained in that Baltimore’s historic Cathedral by Cardinal James Gibbons Dec. 22, 1877. He took up his first assignment, as curate at St. Mary’s Church, New Haven, Conn., Jan. 2, 1878. Father McGivney was named pastor of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, Conn. in 1884. He became seriously ill with pneumonia in January 1890, and died Aug. 14, 1890 at age 38.

The cause, or process, for Father McGivney’s sainthood, was opened by Hartford Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin, in December 1997. The cause was presented to the Vatican in 2000, where it has been under review by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. With the pope’s recent decree, and the authentication of a miracle at Father McGivney’s intercession, the priest could be beatified. A second miracle would be required for canonization.

Still maintaining its headquarters in New Haven, the Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic Fraternal Organization with more than 1.7 million members in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean islands, the Philippines, Guam and, most recently, Poland.

Hate Her or Love Her…
March 17, 2008 · No Comments

This is an article I published in the school paper, thought I’d post it for anyone who didn’t see it yet.

Hate Her or Love Her, Hillary Clinton Embodies America
By Michael Lawler
Staff Writer

***Begin Quote***

Let me start by saying, I disagree with Hillary Rodham Clinton on almost every political position she has. I would have voted for Ronald Reagan twice, George H.W. Bush twice, and George W. Bush twice. However, over the course of the last 14 months, I have watched Hillary Clinton battle for the nomination of her party and along the way my disdain and distrust of her has slowly washed away.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Women were first granted the right to vote under the 19th Amendment in 1920, 50 years after African American men were “granted” the right to vote. Does anyone else find it disturbing that it took 80 years after women were granted the right to vote to elect a woman statewide in New York? I wonder how many of you know that Manhattan College used to be exclusively attended by males until 1973. Women now make up for roughly 49% of the undergraduate student body. While we have come a long way in both race and gender relations over the course of the 20th century, we obviously have not come far enough.

[JR: I don’t interject politics into Jottings. I know I am in a minority — FOWGs tired of getting robbed. But, this maybe a Jasper? If he is, he conceals it well. The school paper may well be the Quadrangle. (Which it appears has gone to dead tree only mode.) The citation of the gender change of Manhattan College is probably more indicative of the feminization of gooferment skools than some “enlightened policy” of the College’s leadership. In case he hasn’t noticed, “boys and girls are different”. The good Nuns and Brothers, either by science or prejudice, “discovered” that segregation by sex may have benefits. Girls learn math better. Boys aren’t showing off. And, everyone is less “involved” in image. But that’s for another day. As far as the author’s assertion that “Hillary embodies America”, please don’t make me laff. Politicians are politicians. Depending on what particular values you think of as “american”, I assure you that no politician shares them. They are all about feathering their nest, while rewarding their fiends, and punishing their enemies. Think Machiavelli; not Mother Theresa! If this fellow is a Jasper and still in school, one can only hope he wises up before graduation. Else he’s got a lot of surprises problem in his future. America hasn’t had a “good” President since George … … Washington that is. And, even that I have doubts about.]

“By observing whirligigs of electrically charges particles in a magnetic field, Brother Gabriel Kane of Manhattan College and Charles B. Reynolds of the Federal Communications Commission confirm the phenomenal discovery of magnetic currents by Dr. Felix Ehrenhaft (P.S.M., June 1944, p. 130). Going further, they make a drop of copper sulfate solution spin between the pole pieces of a permanent magnet, even rotating in interposed microscope cover glass with it. Present laboratory tests may lead to momentous applications in power machinery of the future.”

PR Newswire

Lindt & Sprungli Celebrates Easter with Larger than Life Lindt Gold Bunny Sculpture; Constructed with Lindt premium chocolate by Manhattan College graduate civil engineering students, the 12-foot Lindt Gold Bunny is on display in the Grand Courtyard of The New York Palace Hotel through Easter.

DATELINE: STRATHAM, N.H. March 19

STRATHAM, N.H., March 19 /PRNewswire/ — Lindt & Sprungli, the world’s leading producers of premium chocolate, today unveiled a grand-scale, 12-foot Lindt Gold Bunny chocolate sculpture in the Grand Courtyard of The New York Palace Hotel. The sculpture — made with nearly 1,000 premium chocolate Lindt Gold Bunnies — was designed and built by two graduate civil engineering students from Manhattan College.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080319/NEW066 )

“Beloved by chocolate aficionados around the globe and crafted by the Lindt Master Swiss Chocolatiers, the Lindt Gold Bunny is an iconic figure of Easter,” said Thomas Linemayr, president and chief executive officer of Lindt USA. “We’re thrilled to see Gold Bunny come to life through the sculpture on Madison Avenue for all to enjoy this Easter.”

LINDT GOLD BUNNY SCULPTURE

Created using more than 160,000 grams of the finest quality milk chocolate, the Lindt Gold Bunny sculpture stands 12 feet high and approximately eight feet in width. Utilizing a high-pressure shelving system, the structure was designed and created by graduate students from the Civil Engineering Department at Manhattan — Richard Cassidy and Daniel Hochstein, of Cortland Manor and Mount Kisco, New York, respectively.

“As chocolate lovers and skilled engineers, my students found the experience of working with Lindt & Sprungli very valuable,” said Dr. Moujalli Hourani, chairman of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Manhattan College. “The creation of the Lindt Gold Bunny sculpture provided them with the opportunity to apply their engineering skills to create a project that will be viewed and enjoyed by thousands of people this Easter.”

The New York Palace Hotel is located at 455 Madison Avenue between East 50th Street and East 51st Street. The sculpture can be viewed in the hotel’s Grand Courtyard located directly outside of the critically acclaimed GILT Restaurant. For more information on The New York Palace Hotel and GILT Restaurant & Bar, please visit http://www.newyorkpalace.com/ or http://www.giltnewyork.com/ .

LINDT GOLD BUNNY EGGSTRAVAGANZA

To celebrate the creation of the Lindt Gold Bunny Sculpture and Easter, Lindt and The New York Palace Hotel are hosting a Lindt Gold Bunny Eggstravaganza on Saturday, March 22nd from 2:00-4:00 pm. The event includes an Easter Egg Hunt which will commence at 2:30 pm.

Rain or shine, children and families are invited to come to the courtyard of The New York Palace to participate in a search for premium chocolate bunnies and eggs. The first 250 children under 12 to arrive will receive their very own Easter baskets and will be invited to join in the hunt for thousands of delicious treasures!

Additionally, consumers will have the opportunity to have their photos taken with the Lindt Gold Bunny and guess the number of bunnies used to fill the Lindt Gold Bunny Smart Car for a matched donation to a children’s charity.

LINDT GOLD BUNNY

Edward W. O’Brien Newspaperman

Edward W. O’Brien, 91, the longtime Washington bureau chief for the now-defunct St. Louis Globe-Democrat, died of congestive heart failure March 3 at his Bethesda home.

Mr. O’Brien covered national and international issues for the afternoon newspaper from 1954 until he retired in 1984. Backing up his original reporting with stacks of tear sheets, news releases and government reports, Mr. O’Brien led the fierce competition against the rival and much larger St. Louis Post-Dispatch. With his quiet way of conducting interviews and excellent listening skills, he had “a talent for scoops,” said Marian J. O’Brien, his wife of 58 years.

He broke the news that Warren E. Burger was nominated as chief justice of the United States by President Richard M. Nixon in 1969. He closely tracked the career of Sen. W. Stuart Symington, a Missouri Democrat who was reportedly a leading candidate to be John F. Kennedy’s vice president. Kennedy insider Kenneth O’Donnell told Mr. O’Brien that House Speaker Sam Rayburn, a Texan, had insisted on Lyndon B. Johnson.

Mr. O’Brien was born in Palisades, N.Y., and began working in the news business as a teenager, covering local sports for the Journal News of Nyack, N.Y., at the princely sum of 5 cents an inch, which he quickly doubled. After the Depression started, his pay returned to a nickel an inch.

Mr. O’Brien graduated from Manhattan College and received a master’s degree in business from New York University. He worked for Newsweek in New York, Detroit and Chicago. In 1949, he was invited to join the staff of the Republican congressional campaign committee as a writer; his signature moment came when he began interviewing two congressmen who had just returned from a foreign fact-finding trip.

“Just write something,” one of the representatives told him, and the legislators left.

Five years later, Mr. O’Brien returned to newspapering as bureau chief of the Globe-Democrat. Before retiring, he was elected president of the Gridiron Club in 1981, the exclusive group of Washington journalistic insiders who stage an annual performance and dinner for politicians and celebrities. Mr. O’Brien, his family said, was an enthusiastic if off-key singer.

He enjoyed attending concerts and operas, traveling and gardening. He was a former Eucharistic minister at St. Luke Catholic Church in McLean.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two children, Julia O’Brien of Bethesda and Theodore O’Brien of Leonia, N.J., and two grandchildren.

Aidan Surlis of Crofton was born and raised in County Sligo in Ireland. It’s a poor area where his family owned a general store. He was one of 11 children: seven boys.

Education was a priority in his family. His mom felt the only way out of poverty was with a good education. She moved her kids from school to school just to find them scholarship opportunities.

{Extraneous Deleted}

After high school, Aidan went to seminary and became a Roman Catholic priest. He was ordained in 1959 and was sent to work at the missions in Africa for 10 years. He is fluent in English, Swahili, Latin, Gaelic and Kalenjin (an African tribal language).

In Africa, he helped build a church and schools out of mud and thatch, and taught elementary and high school children. He supervised the delivery and distribution of food at a famine camp.

While in Africa, Aidan made the decision to leave the priesthood. He very much wanted to marry and have a family of his own.

In 1968 he moved to the United States to get a master’s degree in theology from Manhattan College in New York. He tried teaching at an all-boys’ Catholic high school and tthen a co-ed school, but found it difficult because of discipline problems.

During this time he met Catherine Henze, born and raised in the Bronx. The couple married in 1971 and moved to Long Island.

Team Surlis, as they are called, consists of Aidan, his three grown children and two of their spouses.

NEWSMAKER-Refining guru O’Malley eyeing U.S. plants
By Janet McGurty

***Begin Quote***

NEW YORK, March 12 (Reuters) - International refining icon Tom O’Malley wants to buy some U.S. refineries — the kind of move he has turned into big money in the past.

Currently the chairman of Zug, Switzerland-based refiner Petroplus (PPHN.VX: Quote, Profile, Research), O’Malley had a colorful past as cab driver and commodities trader before earning himself a reputation on Wall Street for his Midas touch in the refining business.

Now, with a growing number of U.S. refineries up for sale in the midst of a downturn in the sector, he seems to be preparing to turn more plants into gold.

Petroplus reached a $2 billion deal last month with private equity firms Blackstone Group (BX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and First Reserve to buy some U.S. plants, raising speculation in the energy industry that it could be a bidder for refineries currently owned by top U.S. refiner Valero (VLO.N: Quote, Profile, Research).

O’Malley, speaking to reporters at the Hart World Refining & Fuels conference in San Diego on Wednesday, said he hopes he and his partners can acquire U.S. refineries within the next year-and-a-half at prices below recent deals.

He declined to say whether the group was interested in buying Valero refineries currently up for sale.

San Antonio-based Valero said Tuesday it was considering selling five of its plants in North America, accounting for nearly 30 percent of its portfolio, and could offload three of them by the end of this year.

REFINING GURU

During his leadership at Tosco, which ran from the late 1980s into 2001, O’Malley was able to buy refining assets at what turned out to be bargain prices, upgrade them, and sell them off at a big profit during industry upturns.

In one of his most dramatic moves, O’Malley incurred the wrath of local unions when he purchased the Trainer, Pennsylvania, refinery in 1997 from Unocal Corp, and dismissed all employees from the money-losing plant.

Two years later, an accident at the company’s refinery in Avon, California, killed four workers — an experience O’Malley called the most difficult of his life. As a result, Tosco paid out $2 million in fines and donations.

In 2001, Tosco Corp was sold to Phillips Corp for $7.36 billion.

O’Malley then took the helm of St. Louis-based refiner Clark USA, where private equity group Blackstone Group had bought a 65 percent stake in 1997.

Moving operations of the debt-laden company to Stamford, Connecticut, he then proceeded to change the name to Premcor Inc and take it public through an IPO which raised $423 million.

At Premcor, he began amassing refineries, buying undervalued or poorly fitting assets such as the Delaware City, Delaware, plant from Motiva.

In 2005, as the refining business started pulling in record profits, O’Malley sold Premcor’s four refineries to larger rival Valero in a $6.9 billion stock and cash deal.

The wheeling and dealing O’Malley came from working class roots. Born in 1942 and raised in New York City, he worked as a cab driver to pay his way through Manhattan College in the 1960s.

He characterizes himself as a “happily married” man and is considered by many who have worked with him as a man with a strong work ethic.

“He will die at his desk,” said one Gulf Coast trader who worked with O’Malley for many years.

“No, I plan to die on the golf course,” O’Malley told Reuters in a recent interview. (Editing by Christian Wiessner)

JASPER HEADQUARTERS: Manhattan College To Host National Speaking Tour Featuring Darfur Refugees

Manhattan College To Host National Speaking Tour Featuring Darfur Refugees

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Refugees from Sudan’s western region of Darfur will tell their stories as Manhattan College hosts Voices from Darfur, a national speaking tour sponsored by the Save Darfur Coalition. The event will be held on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. It is free and open to the public.

Voices from Darfur will feature a short documentary film followed by personal accounts of genocide from survivors. The event will be presented by the Manhattan College chapter of the Student Anti-Genocide Coalition (STAND), JustPeace, International Studies, Peace Studies and the Campus Ministry and Social Action.

Since its launch in summer 2007, Voices from Darfur has visited 44 cities across the United States, reaching more than 10,000 people. The tour features speakers such as Abu Asal Abu Asal, a published Arabic language novelist from Western Darfur, who now lives in Massachusetts. He was arrested and beaten by the Sudanese government for protesting the mistreatment of Darfuris and was eventually forced to flee Sudan

Videos of survivors and other resources can be found at www.voicesfromdarfur.org.

Since February 2003, as many as 400,000 people are estimated to have died in Darfur, and 2.5 million have been displaced as a result of what President Bush and Congress have called genocide. Suffering in Darfur continues to intensify as a result of the genocide, which is sponsored by the Sudanese government and perpetrated by the Janjaweed militias.

In June 2007, a United Nations spokesperson stated that nearly 140,000 civilians have been displaced since the beginning of the year. Four million people are now affected by the crisis, which has spread from Sudan into neighboring Chad and the Central African Republic.

The Save Darfur Coalition raises public awareness about the ongoing genocide in Darfur and mobilizes a unified response to the atrocities that threaten the lives of people throughout the Darfur region. It is an alliance of more than 180 faith-based, advocacy and human rights organizations. The coalition’s member organizations represent 130 million people of all ages, races, religions and political affiliations united together to help the people of Darfur. For more information on the coalition, visit www.SaveDarfur.org.

For more information about this event, please contact Lois Harr, director of campus ministry and social action at Manhattan College, at (718) 862-7142.
