Festive crowd fills streets of Yonkers
By Theresa Juva • The Journal News • March 3, 2008

***Begin Quote***

The high pitch of bagpipes and the steady pounding of drums rose from the streets of Yonkers yesterday as hundreds of people lined Broadway to watch the 53rd annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Sunny skies and cool weather pleased the crowd, which was dotted with emerald-colored shirts and shamrock-shaped sunglasses.

Marty Larkin, a member of the Manhattan College Pipes and Drums, was happy it wasn’t cold enough to make his fingers too numb to play the bagpipes.

A dignified lifeline for the dying

Tuesday, March 4th 2008, 4:00 AM

John Welton, who helps the terminally ill, at his Edgewater home.

John Welton walked into a room in the Northwest 7 wing of Montefiore Medical Center and softly addressed the woman who lay in the bed with an oxygen tube sticking out of her throat. Her eyes were calm and vacant.

Hola, Señora,” he said. He explained in Spanish that he was there to make sure she was comfortable.

For the moment, she was alone in the room, but it was brightly-lit and a large, bold print of sunflowers on one wall belied the seriousness of the situation.

She was dying. She had been breathing on a ventilator for a long time, and the family had decided to “extubate” her - remove her from the apparatus keeping her alive - a week earlier.

“Sometimes these things can take time,” he said outside the room.

Welton, 60, a lifelong Bronx resident, has been aiding terminally-ill people in various capacities since the 1980s.

He saw back then in his treatment of jail inmates that people wanted dignity; they wanted to die on their own terms.

Welton was caring for a man with advanced cancer at Rikers Island and successfully appealed to the warden to grant the man a compassionate release. Eight months later, when Welton was working at the “Tombs” - the Manhattan Detention Center - he encountered the same inmate.

“He could barely move, and I saw that he had been arrested on charges of stealing earth-moving equipment,” Welton said. “It turned out he had a friend do it and blame him, because he wanted to go back to jail.

“He told me, ‘The only people who care about me are in C-76 at Rikers.’

“That stuck with me.”

Only in the last decade has care for the dying become a specialty in hospitals.

Montefiore opened its in-patient palliative care unit in 2002.

Welton, a physician’s assistant, has been working since last spring in the unit, which provides treatment for the dying and for those in chronic pain. He interacts with the patients and their families, answering questions on the toughest subject of all.

“We explain things that many people misunderstand,” he said.

More people are appointing a health care proxy and making a living will, he said, but when the time comes, many families still debate the decisions because of emotions.

“You have to have someone who thinks like you,” he said. “Your spouse is too close to it.”

He helps families to realize they must follow the wishes of the patient, even if it’s painful for them.

“They are just looking for comfort,” said the soft-spoken Welton.

“I always feel awkward when a family thanks me.”

Welton has a bushy, gray beard and wears silver-rimmed glasses. When a nurse poked her head into his small office to ask him to examine a patient, he put his stethoscope around his neck, stood up, leaned on his desk to adjust his leg braces, grabbed his crutches and went down the hall to check on the patient, one of 13 in the 15-bed unit that night. Welton has had polio - which crippled his legs - all his life, but it never got in his way. Although, at times, it seemed to bother others.

“Sometimes, I think I hear whispers: ‘What makes him think he can do that?’ It comes up in different ways.”

He graduated Manhattan College with a biology degree and worked as an epidemiologist. But he wanted to work on the clinical side of medicine.

He graduated Long Island University as a physician’s assistant, and got his master’s in public health in epidemiology at Loma Linda University in California.

While working in the city jail system, at the Tombs, Rikers and the old Spofford Juvenile Detention Center beginning three decades ago, he saw a new scourge - HIV and AIDS.

“They were calling it GRID - gay related infectious disease,” Welton recalled. “We could only tell them we were pretty sure they had it; we couldn’t even diagnose it for sure back then.”

Welton worked in HIV care at North Central Bronx Hospital and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital.

Like his work with HIV patients, working in palliative care “is new…things are being learned and developed…that attracts me.”

The married father of a daughter and son acknowledges his line of work can be uncomfortable to some.

“I play ‘Silk Road,’ an Internet game, and I talk to people all over the world. One time I told the other players what I do, and it shut down the game,” he said with a shrug.

JNEWS: Costello, Don (MC1954) for the District 1 seat on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents

UNL lecturer enters regents race

A third candidate has entered the race for the District 1 seat on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

Don Costello, a UNL computer science and engineering lecturer, has dubbed himself the “education candidate” in the race for the seat, which will be vacated by Regent Charles Wilson of Lincoln.

Costello says his No. 1 priority as a regent would be keeping tuition affordable. If elected, he says he’d fight to freeze tuition at NU for three years, or even work to reallocate existing funds that would allow tuition to drop.

“We have a tuition and debt situation where education is being priced out of the market,” he said. “We’re going to create a two-class society: There will be those families who can afford to send their kids to college and there will be those who can’t.”

His dream of a tuition freeze is likely to be popular among at least some students and families. NU has handed down steady tuition increases in the past decade, including four consecutive years of double-digit hikes.

Most recently, regents in June approved a 6 percent tuition increase for the current academic year.

The numbers can’t keep rising, Costello said.

Nebraska needs to compete and if we want to compete, we have to get these kids through school with an affordable education,” he said.

As regent, Costello also says he’d work to improve distance learning at NU.

Costello, a New York native, has lived in Nebraska for 40 years and is a 28-year veteran at NU. He earned degrees from Manhattan College in New York and the University of Notre Dame and did Ph.D. work at NU.

Six of his seven children earned degrees from NU.

Nebraska as a state has been terrific to me,” he said.

Lincoln attorneys Tim Clare and Earl Scudder already are in the race to represent District 1, which covers most of Lancaster County. Wilson has held the seat since 1990.

And where was it he went to school?

Manhattan College, located ironically in the Bronx. Close, but not quite what he’d hoped for from the name. Good engineering program - not that he was in it.

Quite the opposite, in fact. Philosophy/Sociology major. Math not really being his thing.

Between the glasses and the theory I should have guessed Philosophy.

Subject: Suggestion

As the recipient of a free additional year of JJ (1/27/08), I feel safe in making the following suggestion without having my weekly fix suddenly terminated. I believe that switching to a more modern font such as Arial would enhance the appearance of your ezine.

These old eyes just can’t appreciate the serif font anymore. Maybe it’s just me, but I find the sans-serif (aka, believe it or not,”grotesque”) font much easier to read.

I realize there may be technical obstacles that I’m not aware of, or maybe you just prefer Times New Roman. In any event, please note that I will continue to enjoy your labor of love every week - at least until my subscription expires.
