19 Feb 2008

Dear CIC,

I would like to announce my engagement to Miss Susan Moore (no relation!!!!) of Maspeth, New York. The bride is a graduate of Queensboro College and is currently employed by JP Morgan Chase Bank. She is also the sweetest, most compassionate person I have ever met. The wedding will take place on October 12, 2008 and the ceremony will be performed by the bride’s uncle, Msgr. Phillip Reilly, the executive director of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants, the pro-life apostolate which Msgr. founded in 1989.

I also met a fellow Jasper recently who would like to receive Jasper Jottings. He is Nick Manos (class of 1976) and he can be reached at {Extraneous Deleted}.

On March 8, Manhattan College will play Bellarmine here in an NCAA Division I lacrosse match. The match will be at Lindenwood University at noon. Manhattan coach Tim McIntee was a longtime friend of the late Mike Sennett, who started the highly successful DeSmet lacrosse program in 1991. Sennett died suddenly last year, and McIntee wanted to bring his team here as a way to honor Sennett. Manhattan has three St. Louisans on the roster: senior defenseman Mike Wilcox (DeSmet) and freshmen midfielders Erich Smith (CBC) and Christopher Kaiser (DeSmet).

As I was standing and watching, I started speaking with an Indian boy there about the ritual and accompanying beliefs. After a while, he invites me to his family’s silk factory. I don’t intend on buying any sarees until the end of my trip, and I tell him as much, but Varanasi is famous for its silk, so I agree to go with him. Tourists here get these sort of invitations dozens of times a day, and for the most part I ignore the people and just keep walking, but for whatever reason, I was that day in the mood to go see a silk shop. When I get there, I’m given tea and meet the man who owns it. No sooner has he found out I’m from New York than he asks me if I know Manhattan College. Why yes, quite well. How strange. I assume he’s mistaking it for NYU, and just throwing some names out there, but then he tells me he knows a professor there. “Stephen?” he says, but I don’t understand his accent until he says he’s a professor of Religion, and then I realize I know exactly who he’s talking about, quite well. The odds of this happening in a country this size, in a city this size, are so small it’s mind boggling. I promise to come back and buy my sarees from him on my way out of town in April.

Seeing a career in the window Window replacement business has clear sailing
CEO has suggestions on how to succeed

By Patricia J. James STAFF REPORTER

***Begin Quote***

NORTHBORO— Until he was 18, John K. Esler thought he might follow in his father’s footsteps and become an engineer.

“I went home and said no to Manhattan College after all,” Mr. Esler recalled. “I’m going to business school.”

Now 44, he has grown a business with zero revenue to $20 million in just over three years. As president and chief executive officer ofRenewal by Andersen, Mr. Esler said his next goal is to get to $32 million in one year. No single office in the window business in the country has reached $30 million, he said. The Renewal by Anderson brand is owned by Andersen Corporation.

LINKEDIN: Results of my one month test on “liveliness” — 37%! I’m disappointed

Saturday, December 1, 2007

On November 1st, I hit upon the idea of “Liveliness” testing of my LinkedIn “network”.

(We can chat why my “LinkedIn network” is NOT my “network”. And, if what one does with LinkedIn is “networking”. It’s not Lucht’s version of face to face networking. But, it is doing “something”. Just don’t know if it should be called “networking” except in the loosest sense of the word.)

Is anyone aware of any formal testing of LinkedIn networking? All I ever see is anecdotal stories. Any one applying Six Sigma to LinkedIn?

Thanks,

fjohn
