Subject: Jerry Breen cartoon

John: Here’s a new cartoon (I’ll try to get them to you on a more regular basis from now on). It’s equal time for the Republicans this time, with John McCain. Lately, the reporters seem to ask everybody, including politicians, “What’s on your iPod?”  Surprisingly, most of them, including Obama and even old grey George W., actually do have iPods and give a list of their favorite tracks. Except John McCain. He really is a relic from another era. He actually grew up mostly in the age of radio, and admits that he never touches a computer keyboard. So I tried to imagine his answer to that inevitable question, “What’s on your iPod?”  Jerry Breen www.newbreen.com

JNEWS: Dolan, Fr. Michael (MC1953) Calls on Catholics to Work for Change in Public Life

http://www.pr.com/press-release/96058

iUniverse Would Like to Announce the Release of We Are a House Divided by Father Michael Dolan

***Begin Quote***

Bloomington, IN, July 20, 2008 (PR.com) In Election Year, New Book Ignites Discussion about Disparities between Catholic Teaching and Political Action.

Father Michael Dolan believes passionately that “’Catholic’ is not a label to be worn, but a life to be lived.”  In his new book, We Are A House Divided, Dolan contends that the connection between religious life and civil life in America has widened to the breaking point. This powerful work urges Catholics to immediately bridge this gap and leads the discussion on how to accomplish this task.

Steps must be taken, Dolan writes, to remedy the current situation before the American Catholic Church is pulled apart. We Are A House Divided is not only a scholarly treatise, but also a call to action. Dolan suggests ways that Catholic bishops, priests and laymen can restore the communion of the faithful as a strong, unified voice in the American public discourse.

The author is especially frustrated by Catholic politicians and voters who do not apply the Roman Catholic Church’s fundamental teachings to legislation or voting decisions. He argues that the Catholic Church must directly engage in political debates over cultural issues, such as abortion, embryonic stem cell research, gay marriage and the tragic consequences associated with in vitro fertilization. The Catholic Church, Dolan writes, has the moral and cultural authority to do so.

The author brings these issues to the fore with a powerful and unique voice. Having joined the priesthood as a widower, Dolan has lived a full life in the laity as a husband, father of seven children and medical doctor and retired U.S. Naval officer.

In his thought-provoking book, he sets out his arguments with surgical precision, citing frequently from authoritative Catholic texts, speeches and doctrine. But he also brings a fresh perspective on a human scale, drawing on his medical expertise, his family and his own profound spiritual journey.

The combination of authoritative scholarship and sincere personal appeal establishes We Are A House Divided as an important and timely approach to current issues. As the U.S. presidential contest winds through the summer and fall, We Are A House Divided is sure to engender a renewed and profound discussion about the role of faith in public and political life.

About the Author

Father Michael Dolan has been an ordained priest since 1997. A widower who entered the seminary after the death of his beloved wife, Dolan is a retired naval officer, physician and great-grandfather who resides in Silver Spring, Md. He received his undergraduate degree from Manhattan College and his medical degree from New York Medical College, both in New York City. He received a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and his Master of Divinity from the Pope John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Mass.

SAN DIEGO - (Business Wire) iMarkup Solutions, Inc., a provider of web-based business process automation and reporting solutions for the enterprise, today announced the appointment of Edward Skiko as CEO and Chairman. Skiko assumes the position upon the passing of John O’Brien, iMarkup’s President and founder. Previously Skiko served as a member of the Board of Directors and was an initial investor in the company.

Skiko’s career spans technical, managerial and executive positions at IBM and General Electric. His last assignment at IBM was as Vice President of the Printer Business with worldwide responsibility for strategic planning, profitability, product development and manufacturing. At GE as its Corporate Vice-President of Information Technology, Skiko had global responsibility for the company’s voice and data networks and data centers – as well as directing the Information Systems organizations within all GE business units. Skiko earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University and a Bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College also in Electrical Engineering.

According to Jim Brush, VP of Sales and Marketing, “From its inception Ed has been involved in helping to guide iMarkup’s strategy as we evolved from end user annotation tools to robust and scalable enterprise products. His guidance has been invaluable.”

That guidance is evident in iMarkup’s sales growth. A significant factor in this growth has been the acceptance of the company’s workflow engine and its automated review and approval functionality. These capabilities enable customers like Johnson & Johnson, the National Institute of Mental Health, NuVasive, NORESCO and Pharmaceutical Product Development, Inc., to deploy iMarkup while mirroring their existing business processes.

“John O’Brien was a visionary business leader. His passing is a great loss to all who knew and worked with him,  stated Skiko. “The company will strive to build on his legacy of delivering superior products and customer service. We will aggressively introduce new products, expand our customer and partner base, and never lose sight of our responsibility to our loyal customers.”

News from Paul Feiner.

Filed under: Paul Feiner wielandheusler @ 10:45 pm

I am planning to request a meeting with the county to discuss the possibility of using Sprain Lake as a site for a boathouse for Greenburgh and Yonkers. Sprain Lake is a beautiful lake â“ not used by the community. Part of the lake is located within the town of Greenburgh. I am suggesting that the county open the lake up to rowing, kayaking and canoeing on a trial basis this fall on selected dates. Manhattan College is interested in this initiative and might be interested in either purchasing or renting space. This could generate revenue for Westchester County, reduce our taxes and provide enhanced recreation for students and adults. Yonkers City Council President Chuck Lesnick has been pushing for recreation boating on the Sprain for years. I believe that the concept deserves support and follow up. It’s unfortunate that this lake is not being taken advantage of.

PAUL FEINER

Greenburgh Town Supervisor

= = = = =

Dear Mr. Feiner.

Thank you for meeting with me the other day regarding the use of the Sprain Lake as a site for a boathouse for the Greenburgh and Yonkers communities. Rowing is expanding exponentially across the country and additional facilities are desperately needed.

When I started rowing at Manhattan College in the late 1970’s, college programs and the New York Athletic Club were the only two options for someone looking to row. I was fortunate enough to earn a spot at the NYAC and was able to continue after college but when I stopped competing, there was no place to row for recreation.

Recently, two new programs have been started, one on the Harlem River and the other on Glenn Island and I have been able to return to the sport. These programs are open to both high school students and masters level rowers and are having a positive impact for many children. Both of these programs are open to all comers and also provide community outreach programs for children with limited means. However, these programs are also almost full to capacity in the number of rowers they can accommodate.

The Sprain Lake has the potential to be a world class course. It is long and wide enough and is not tidal. I think that the entrance to the lake at Jackson Ave would be ideal since there is ample land available for parking and a boathouse without encroaching on private residents. Traffic would also not be a big issue especially since most programs are run early in the morning and immediately after school thereby avoiding rush hour traffic.

I have spoken to several rowing clubs and they are all excited about the possibility of another place to row and race. I would like to enlist your help in organizing a mini regatta in the fall to assess the suitability of the course. The teams invited would provide their own equipment, launches and the officials to create a safe environment for the rowers. We would also try to get the race certified by the US Rowing Association for insurance purposes.

I know that you will do all you can to help this happen and I look forward to working with you to make this dream come true.

Sincerely,

Vinny Houston

Edward G. Colbert M.D.

1927 - 2008

Edward G. Colbert, M.D., renowned psychiatrist, international humanitarian, loving husband, committed father and enchanting grandfather, passed away peacefully, July 20, 2008, in the presence of family, after suffering complications from a fall and head injury. He was 81.

On June 13, 1927, Ed was born the only child of banker, Edward J. and teacher Helen A. Colbert, in the state of New York. Raised in Flushing, Long Island, he attended parochial schools and at the age of 16, graduated from St. Anne’s Academy as its high school valedictorian.

After attending one year at the Christian Brothers’ Manhattan College, Ed left and enlisted in the United States Navy the final year of World War II. While serving as a Hospital Corpsman in San Diego and Boston naval hospitals, he became fascinated by the miraculous recoveries of extremely “shell-shocked  servicemen, leading to his initial interest in the field of mental health.

After an honorable discharge, Ed returned to Manhattan College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1949. He next attended Marquette University School of Medicine in Milwaukee, Wis., and after graduating in 1953, took up residency in psychiatry at the University of California Los Angeles in Southern California. He found his calling and a new home.

Ed began his medical career in 1959 as Director of the Xavier Clinic at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, the medical center’s first psychiatric service. Shortly after moving to private practice in 1961, he published the first American article on the utilization of lithium in treatment of bipolar disease for the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA). The exposure from that historic feature launched Ed as a communicator in his field, leading to regular appearances at community meetings, editorial work for medical newsletters, university lecture engagements, a guest appearance on television, and offerings of leadership roles in prestigious associations, organizations and boards. Among them: President, National Guild of Catholic Psychiatrists (1970-71). President, Los Angeles County Medical Association, Bay District (1975). President, Los Angeles County Catholic Physicians’ Guild (1975). Member of the Campaign of Human Development (U.S.C.C., 1970’s).

After his retirement in 1993, Ed moved to Ventura County and redirected his energies to humanitarian projects (here and in Mexico), public health affairs, church activities and politics. Among the groups he contributed countless volunteer hours: Chair, Bio-ethics Program, L. A. Catholic Medical Association (1996-99). Chair, Ventura Catholic Health Care Association (1999-2000). Member of the Republican Ventura County Central Committee (2002). Rotary International (current member in Camarillo; former President in Pacific Palisades). Member of the Board of Directors at St. Johns Seminary, Camarillo (current). Recruited for Catholic “3rd Order  of the Knights of Malta (current). Creator of Padre Serra’s film library and its returning program, “Reel Spirituality  (current). Advisory Board of the Camarillo Health Care District (current). Volunteer for Camarillo City’s Committee on Aging (current). Volunteer for Ventura County Area Agency on Aging (current).

Ed’s personal love story involves two marvelous volumes with similar names: With his first wife, garden writer and television personality, Mary Therese “Teddy  Colbert (married in 1954), Ed had seven children, Chris, Tom, Paul, Beth, Peter, Jeanine and Teddy II. A half year after his wife’s untimely death in 2001, Ed fell in love with another gem called Mary, this one named Mary Dady, after an introduction at daily Mass. With their 2003 marriage, Ed was blessed with four step-children, Mark, Jenny, Peter and Jon.

Just months ago, Ed’s extended family saw him honored as Camarillo’s “Senior of the Year.”

He also leaves behind nine adoring grandchildren, hundreds of friends, along with the countless recipients of his unstoppable, can-do spirit.

Now angels are sporting a bumper sticker on their left wing, admonishing them on their rounds: “What would Ed do?”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The RAIN Project (for homeless Ventura County families) in Ed’s name: 805-485-6288; or through website: http://www.volunteerventuracounty.org/org/12538070.html

Public viewing time: 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 25, Chapel of the Hills, Conejo Mountain Funeral Home. Vigil: 7 p.m. Friday, Conejo Mountain Funeral Home.

Subject: Fw: A Quarter too much- A modern day parable

A MODERN DAY PARABLE

Several years ago, a new preacher moved to Houston,Texas. Some weeks after he arrived, he had occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, “You’d better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.”  Then he thought, “Oh, forget it, it’s only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway, the bus company gets too much fare; they will never miss it.

Accept it as a ‘gift from God’ and keep quiet.”

When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, “Here, you gave me too much change. The driver with a smile replied, “Aren’t you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking lately about going to worship somewhere. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I’ll see you at church on Sunday” .

When the preacher stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, “Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter.”

Our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read. This is a really almost scary example of how much people watch us as Christians and will put us to the test!

Always be on guard and remember (as I try to remember) that you carry the name of Christ on your shoulders when you call yourself “Christian.”

Tom,

Just out of curiosity, is there to be an online offering? Or is it print only?

I’d have suspected that there would be some announcement preceding the email.

If all you have is a book, it’s easy to be a throwback. :-) And, people, who want the info, have to take it how it is offered. Hobson’s choice. (I wonder how much that ‘throwback’ has cost the College in forgone development opportunities? One will never know.)

Unfortunately, Plaxo, Cardscan, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and others have demonstrated that the “book  is not the way to consume this type of information. I have an FDU account that knock my socks off. It’s not a book; it one of these new fangled things called a “website” . You may have heard of them. :-) Manhattan has had some in the past.

OK, I’ll shut up now and pass the word that it’s legit.

[JR: Just noting for the record, the original email was identified as SPAM by Yahoo, Google, and my own service provider 1AND1. So, and it really did visually look "Nigerian" with the text and poor formatting. Added to the fact that it came into me on a 'wrong' email account, the warning bells were going off. Especially since there was no announcement from HQ. If you missed your email, you may want to check your spam folder. I have no idea what the plan is, so you have to look to HQ for further information. My limited knowledge is exposed here at Jasper Jottings; so don't ask me. If you get more information and care to share, I'd be happy to pass it along.]

No Trader Joe’s for Riverdale

by Candice M. Giove

Riverdale Review, 07/24/2008

The specialty grocery chain Trader Joe’s has no plans for Riverdale, though many speculated that the unique shop would seek retail space at the site of the new Manhattan College parking facility at West 242nd Street and Broadway.

“At this time I do not have a location in the next two years in that area,  said Trader Joe’s spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki.

Initially, Manhattan College planned to partner with Pathmark, but chain’s financial woes collapsed the deal.

Public Appeal

Manhattan College is a fairly small school with students hailing from a wide variety of demographics. On campus, interest in food reform happens to be concentrated within a very small minority of students. Fortunate to have found each other at all, our little Fair Trade/Food Reform coalition decided, upon organizing, that gaining public appeal and educating our peers would be our first challenge.

Meanwhile a $74.5 million program announced in December 2006 to build cottages for Katrina survivors in Louisiana to replace the travel trailers hasn’t produced a single cottage. The program has been mired in red tape and a bureaucratic game of hot potato as the program got passed from one state agency to another, the Associated Press reported.

Ahh, yes, “social justice”, as manifest by our benign beloved and munificent Federal gooferment. Yup, good thing we don’t have the “evil corporations” involved. And we know that charities couldn’t possibly do a better job! And, leave the poor people alone to find their own solutions and run their own lives. Why that’s just cruel!

Hey here’s an idea. Let’s print more money and give each “katrina victim” a cash handout. Oh, we did that. OK, this time, we’ll give them “gift cards”. Oh we did that. Lap dances and booze ring a bell.
