Guys like Lancer made course shine

BYLINE: Jock Mackenzie

SECTION: SECTION C; Jockular Topics; Pg. 4C

Like many of you, I’ve seen a lot of golf courses in my time. I have played two in Spain, been a private club member for more than 30 years, played eight of the famous Pinehurst courses and cast my less-than-desired ability on some of the best public and semi- private courses in the USA.

But never have I witnessed the amount of love and respect that exuded in the atmosphere of Palm Harbor Golf Course in Palm Coast. It exists even today, though the course is not ready for play.

A lot of good people were responsible for this atmosphere but none more than Dave Lancer, a cart man by desire, an excellent golfer by ability, and with a personality that doesn’t know how to quit.

About that love for Palm Harbor Lancer told me, “You hit that right on the head. I stayed there for 19 years. I loved the people. They were just wonderful, the ladies, the men. They really were great. They made life easy for me over there. I still see them, I see them in church.”

So what was an accounting major at Manhattan College with a masters degree from New York University doing as a Palm Harbor cart man, or as one of the earlier pros used to call it, “a bag man?”

The way that happened was I had a boat in California for years. I love boats. When we moved down here I stood out in the back and we were looking at the water,” Lancer said. “I looked up and down and here were these guys with white hair, retired, throwing food to the fish and looking at the birds. They were playing golf. I looked at my wife and said, ‘No, I can’t do that. I can’t play golf five days a week. I get tired of that so I’m going to go over and see if I can get one of those jobs piloting the boats around the canals over there.’ “

Lancer continued his story.

So I interviewed for that and the girl said, ‘Dave, these are old guys. They love boats like you do. They are never going to retire. I’ll put your name down but I have a job at one of our stops at the golf course for six hours a day, three days a week and it’s free golf.’ So I said, ‘Let me try that.’ Nineteen years later I was still there.”

Lancer was born in the heart of New York City but left in 1965 for a job in California. He worked for Nationwide Insurance Company.

I was asked to join that company as vice president of finance. I retired from that in 1986 and they wanted me to stay on, probably because I knew where all the dead bodies were. They wanted me to stay on as a director and I’ve been a director since 1985.”

The company still flies Lancer to California for board meetings about five times a year. He had just returned when I spoke to him for this interview.

I also wanted to know why he chose Palm Coast as a retirement site.

I retired for the third time,” he said. “My son was here working with the PGA Tour and their main office was here. We figured we would both be retired. We moved to Palm Cost to be near him, he would get married and we would have grandchildren. He didn’t get married until he was 53 years old!”

David Lancer, the son he plays golf with each and every Saturday, is the media director of information for the PGA in Ponte Vedra.

Does the elder Lancer have regrets about moving here, especially without those grandchildren he and his wife planned on?

No. I miss the mountains and that’s about all. I love the ocean.”

This former Marine, who served from 1942 to 1945 in the South Pacific, was more anxious to talk about Palm Harbor and the people who played there.

We had beautiful people at Palm Harbor, beautiful people. Fortunately, I got to play with the Early Birds, Judd Canty’s group, then I got to play with the Sludge group.”

He still bumps into former Palm Harbor members who remember him and their days there affectionately.

Oh yeah, when I go to the stores shopping or playing golf I meet the ladies. They all come over and they say, ‘God, we miss that place. Are they ever going to open it?’ Is there any chance they are going to open it,” Lancer said. “They loved playing there because it was a great course and the membership was of some beautiful people. That’s why I enjoyed staying there so long; otherwise I wouldn’t have.”

One of Lancer’s regular assignments was to be on hand as cart man for the ladies on their day with the Palm Harbor Ladies Golf Association. That’s one of the reasons why so many of their members see and speak with him so often these days

I asked Lancer if he would go back to Palm Harbor when it reopens as either a cart man or as a member. He said yes, “as a member.”

Lancer is no slouch as a golfer, recording scores of 68 and 69 at one time, and he can still hit the ball the proverbial country mile when he gets those hips and legs into it. You don’t look for the “whoosh” in Lancer’s swing because it’s all body power and he pounds the daylights out of that bothersome pellet.

So, in all of his 19 years at Palm Harbor what are his favorite memories?

In golf it was having a hole-in-one at Matanzas, on No. 3 back in 1998 and the 68 at Marsh Creek. My 69 score was at Palm Harbor; that was my finest memory.”

Lancer continued, “Your article about Ouimet Day got me thinking about people like Joyce Jackson. She used to run the Palm Harbor Niners and she was great. She helped us a lot. We had others, too, Isabel Lowe, Ann Leide, Peg Conrad and of course all those guys.

Then I think about the people and the members, the crew we had at that time. Remember Gary Freeman?” he asked.

Freeman was the head pro back then and is now the golf coach at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach.

Everybody liked him. He was a great guy and he still is,” Lancer said.

What Freeman did was set up a Gary Freeman Sweepstakes Tournament every other month.

Everybody was in it, the Ladies, the Early Birds, you know. The Early Birds led off the first Gary Freeman Sweepstakes Tournament. I shot 69 that day,” Lancer said.

Call it staid if you will, but the membership and employees gave that golf course a lot of integrity. That’s what Palm Coast city officials have waiting for them when they reopen Palm Harbor, hopefully by the latter part of 2008.

I just hope they remember to value what they have at their doorstep, the Dave Lancers, the ladies of golf, the wonderful members and employees who once graced that place for so long.

Police are hunting for a teen they believe shot and killed a college student who was trying to break up a fight Saturday morning in Brooklyn.

Nikko Colon, 17, allegedly fired a single bullet into Allen Tahiraj’s stomach about 3:30a.m. as Tahiraj hung out with friends on Ocean Parkway, cops said.

Tahiraj, 19, apparently was trying to break up a fight involving two groups of people when he was shot. The accounting major at Manhattan College, who lived nearby, died at Kings County Hospital.

“It’s tough,” said Suzanne Bone, 22, who grew up with Tahiraj. “He’s gone. He’s gone for trying to be a nice person.”

The shooting sparked a massive police response because witnesses claimed that Colon, who previously has been arrested on drug charges, ran into an apartment building on Ocean Parkway near Avenue P to hide.

Dozens of cops dressed in riot gear stormed the building, searching for Tahiraj’s assailant. The building was evacuated and nearby roads were closed as police brought in an armored vehicle and battering rams.

They did not find Colon, who is described by police as Hispanic, about 6 feet tall and weighing 155 to 165 pounds. Cops also said Colon has brown eyes and close-cropped black hair.

Police asked anyone with information about Colon to call Crime Stoppers at

Wow, I did the same thing. I paid them the 100$ to have a group. LinkedInJaspers. I only had 23 people join.

What’s yours? Did you do better?

John,

I joined Facebook, MySpace and a few others and found them all inappropiate for business networking and in some cases, inappropriate for social networking as well. I use LinkedIn because it is professional in its appearance and purpose.

I noticed when doing searches for people in LinkedIn, the search results were derived not from the total LinkedIn population but rather a subset of the total population, specifcally, people in my network. Therefore, in order to be successful in finding who I am looking for, it encourages me to expand my network.

I have tried to be selective about who I add to my network attempting to limit it to people I would truly feel comfortable asking for an introduction or recommendation and for the most part have been successful.

I thought having a common bond such as a college alum, for example you and I, would suffice in my mind to justify a request to jon my network. That is why I created the Manhattan College group on LinkedIn.

The MC alum office has new people in it. I have a MC Alum Yahoo Group and Distribute-Jasper-Jottings group. There’s a semi-active MC NYC group, a Young Jaspers Group, and some other small local groups in FL, Buffalo, and , and some other “splinter cities:. There are groups in Facebook, MySpace, Freindster, and some other ones and twos.

So what type of group are you trying to start?

John, I will share my thoughts with you regarding the LinkedIn “network” under separate cover but in short, I share your disappointment with your informal survey however am not suprised.

On a separate subject, after a few unanswered E-mails to the MC Alumni Office requesting they do so, I have created a Manhattan College group. I am looking for someone to search for and attempt to join the group so I can see what happens from an adimistrative point of view as it is unclear to me in the documentation how the process works. If you can help, let me know.

Thank you,

James

Has anyone tested the “liveliness” of their LinkedIn “network”?

LINKEDIN: Results of my one month test on “liveliness” — 37%! I’m disappointed

Saturday, December 1, 2007

On November 1st, I hit upon the idea of “Liveliness” testing of my LinkedIn “network”.

(We can chat why my “LinkedIn network” is NOT my “network”. And, if what one does with LinkedIn is “networking”. It’s not Lucht’s version of face to face networking. But, it is doing “something”. Just don’t know if it should be called “networking” except in the loosest sense of the word.)

Is anyone aware of any formal testing of LinkedIn networking? All I ever see is anecdotal stories. Any one applying Six Sigma to LinkedIn?

Thanks,

fjohn
