JASPER EVENTS THAT I HAVE HEARD ABOUT

September 21-23, 2007

Hold the date:

By the way, the Retreat this year is scheduled for September 21, 22, and 23 at the Retreat House in Riverdale.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

QUOTE: le’Roy, a Jasper blogger, 2009

My message to students who are concerned and sad about people who may judge them according to their skin tone: Strive to be the best person you can be, if hate comes across your path, do not turn the other cheek; instead help that person. That individual will end up realizing that disliking a person because of race is ridiculous. That person may even end up being your best friend. With that solution, you have just eliminated one case of racism. You can’t fight hate with anger. Are you still shocked?

One of last two veterans of World Wars dies
By Richard Savill
Last Updated: 7:12am GMT 19/12/2006

An officer who has died at the age of 106 was one of the last two surviving men to have served in both World Wars.

Capt Kenneth Cummins, who died at his home in Great Bedwyn, near Marlborough, Wilts, on Dec 3, was a sub-lieutenant in the First World War and a Merchant Navy captain in the Second.

We are losing our links to history. Each time one of us "leaves" without their story being captured, it's lost forever. It's sad. Record your song for posterity. I am.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

VILLAGE ELECTIONS

E. Williston races crowded
3 vying for mayor, 6 for trustee spots; In Roslyn races, development is key
BY COLLIN NASH
collin.nash@newsday.com

March 18, 2007

The village election Tuesday in East Williston is unprecedented: Never before has there been a three-way race for mayor and a six-candidate tussle for two trustee seats.

Incumbent mayor Nancy Zolezzi, 50, who owns an auto body shop with her husband, Albert, is seeking a third term.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Opposing Zolezzi are first-time candidates Louis Theodore, 72, and Matthew Cuomo, 39.

Theodore, a chemical engineering professor at Manhattan College running on the Taxpayers Party slate, said skyrocketing school taxes inspired him to run.

“I would use the power of the mayor’s office to convene a meeting with all the leaders in the communities that use the district so we could work as a group to search for solutions,” Theodore said.

Voting is from noon to 9 p.m. at the East Williston Fire House, 456 Sagamore Ave.

Dear Jasper John

I don't know about your grandparents and their "civil" society, but I do know that my grandfather died the year before I was born after being hurt at work and developing
gangrene as a result.  After the injury he had to walk home under his own power as required
by the "civil'' society. Those were the good old days before the " gooferment" programs
OSHA  and  Medicare  existed.  If OSHA had existed he might well have lived long enough to for me to have known him.
I can think of many government programs that work- Social Security, Medicare,
FHA, FDA, OSHA, SEC etc. etc.  Do you really think the country and the word would be better without them.

I know my grandfather would have been better off today - he and millions of others.

You appear to live in a different  world than I do- I guess perception is everything.

Sincerely yours,

{JR: I'm sorry that you never got to know your Grandfather. But, I don't think that we as a society can "afford" the litany of alphabet soup. I don't know that he or anyone would have been better off, but they would have been "wealthier" and "free-er" and "healthier" than with what we have today. Agree to disagree?]

Hey John, this is rob from robbecker.com.  Glad you liked the site!

I googled Jasper Jottings and found a few pages -- one on blogger, also jasperjottings.com , and you mentioned a Wordpress site.  Do you have a "main" page that I should check out, or do you keep them all updated?

Hi Rob:

Yes, I did think it was nicely done. Here's a description of what you might be seeing.

I have a Yahoo Group --- actually several of them --- but one is dedicated to distributing Jasper Jottings weekly issue to our fellow alums that are email-based. A heritage from the old "listbot" email distribution system. I also have several years of weekly issues at the website www.jasperjottings.com. Both are updated about the same time on Saturday. The website goes up first; the distribute email goes out shortly after that. I have "guaranteed" a Sunday delivery, but I usually have it ready by Saturday sometime. So both are in sync. I have a lame rss pointer that is also available.

I used to cover sports extensively, but the College outsourced "sports" to a new vendor at http://gojaspers.com/ and there was no reason to duplicate. So, in response to my reader feedback, I pushed all the non-MC sports news, when time permits, to  http://jasperjottings.blogspot.com/ and chase everyone looking for sports to the official college site.

I should have thought a little about "branding" but I'm an injineer not a business guy. It's a hobby and I remind people of that from time to time. ;-)

I am beta testing a WordPress blog at "Jasper Jottings on WordPress" http://jxymxu7sn5ho9d.wordpress.com/ which I am planning to offer to our fellow alums as "Jasper Jottings Daily". Accessible as a website,  an rss feed, or a daily email from FEEDBLITZ. I have begun put everything I find there on a daily basis.

I also have staged a LINKEDIN_JASPERS yahoo group, that you might find in the searches. I have an application pending for a public group on LinkedIn for our fellow alums to "badge" themselves on LinkedIn.

So the short answer is that everything is all up-to-date depending upon where you look and what you're looking for. ;-)

Hopefully, one of these days I can turn it over to young blood who'll make it all "right".

Hope this helps.

Yes, we do have an update on our group's reunion plans.  The 2007 Reunion is planned for the Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 5th through Oct. 8th, 2007 in Washington, DC.  The initial outline is available on our web site, www.aasalumni.org.

Nearly 50 former members of the Maj. Wm. V. Holohan Squadron of the Arnold Air Society participated in our survey/vote.  The group includes squadron alumni from 1971 through today (some anticipating their alumni status come October).

If any of your readers are former squadron members and would like to participate *or* if they have maintained contact with with former squadron members, I would encourage them to visit the site and leave a "Guest Book" entry.

Cheers....

To sum all of this up, I am interested in meeting some other gamers here on Long Island as the commute/time that Manhattan College typically meets is a bit tough for me to make on a regular basis. I may seem busy, and I am, but if I find a game with a group of nice people, I can and will make time for it. Sundays typically would work out well, and I’d be willing to travel as far west as some parts of queens, and as far east as wading river or port jefferson.

That being said, I hope to meet some of you soon! Sadly I will not be able to make it to ICON at stony brook as I have previous engagements on all of the days this year, but I am sure it will be a blast and that, yes, I am missing out.

How Green Was My Beer
I’m dreaming of a white St. Patrick’s Day

***Begin Quote***

I went on to spend 2 of my 4 years of college in very Irish Catholic drinking schools in the Bronx where we continued the tradition, and even more so because we were legal, only we took the subway (which was above ground) to Manhattan for the festivities. Some of the guys in Manhattan College’s Gaelic Society allowed a couple of us girls to march with them. Supposedly we were the first females allowed to march with the Gaelic Society and only because we were formidable drinking buddies and pretty cute. This was early feminism c. 1974. Maybe we walked with them for a couple of blocks, only to be lured away to the Irish pubs on the side streets serving 10¢ green beers and free corned beef and cabbage with watery potatoes.

***End Quote***

[JR: I remember the 10¢ green beer, but I know no Jasper would break the rules and smuggle girls in to the march. They may have been drunk enough to “lose” them as described. But Jaspers never break the rules.]

Dear Jasper Community, and Jasper Stebbins '61 in particular,

I don't need John to "carry my water". He thinks your response is a "D versus R" thing. I disagree. All Americans have been brainwashed into worshiping the government.

>Exclusive: Andrew Victim Gets Power After 15 Years

I cited this as a (as John calls it) "gooferment" problem!

Here's my logic.

The gooferment has inserted itself in to all sorts of areas -- unconstitutionally and unconscionably imho. It has DESTROYED America. Like a cancer, it has (a) asserted it has all these roles; (b) legislated, regulated, and diktated all free market competition away; (c) taxed, inflated, and fee-ed away all the resources that could compete with it; and (d) propagandizes that it alone can do things because there is no one else left to do it.

This poor soul should have had: (a) a family looking out for her; (b) friends looking out for her; (c) neighbors looking out for her; (d) her "church" looking out after her; (e) her "Polish Irish Italian Puerto Rican Black" American Association looking out for her; (f) the Boy / Girl Scouts looking out after her; and finally (g) the true charities like the Salvation Army looking out for her.

But, these things have all been crowded out by the gooferment.

By the way, there is nothing sadder than watching the St Patrick's Day parade and seeing the AOH down to five fat old men. Or, the KerryMen down to a rump squad. These used to be vibrant "mutual aid associations". I know a Polak who was inducted into the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh. It was not about being ethnic. It was mutual aid. There was a time when the American Legion and the VFW would - could stand up to Washington. All these things, that could compete with gooferment, have been destroyed by the gooferment. The Queen Bee destroys her rivals. The KofC invented insurance for the poor working man; destroyed by the gooferment's regulations.

By the way doesn't the gooferment's "US Post Office" have a "check up on seniors" program? I guess this lady didn't get mail.

By the way, since the Power Company is really an extension of the gooferment, didn't they notice the loss of a paying customer?

So like Catholic Schools, the Social Security Ponzi scheme, and the "counterfeit" money issued by the "federal reserve bank", this issue is a gooferment issue.

If the gooferment didn't claim to have a role in every human interaction, if it did not mess with every dollar we have, and if it hasn't been propagandizing - indoctrinating us into worship of itself, then we might have been able to do something without it.

>Such indifference by neighbors offers proof to me that
>we need more government, not less.

Yup, just what we need, more gooferment! Pass the Kool Aid, brother. Massah Gooferment is gonna take care of all us ... ... (oops almost said a politically incorrect word!) ... ... slaves. It's slavery. Just with velvet chains. That sometimes are not so velvet.

>Making sure every residence had  power restored should have
>been a governmental responsibility.

Sure. And, what was to prevent the politicians and their gestapo from going door2door to do that? "knock, knock, Hi I'm Officer Jones and Politician Smith. Is everything ok here?" Oh yeah, they would to have cared! So now we have to have a diktat that says "we the father government will check your power". How soon before we have to check to see if "our" children temporarily in your care have brushed their teeth. BTW Did you wipe your butt and Wash your hands. No, sorry, then it's time to shoot the sobs.

>Note that the problem was solved in hours once the mayor took action.

Sure. It was the press watching that may have motivated him.

>  Good, efficient, government is often the best way for us to act
> in concert to better our communities.

Are we on the same planet? Has there ever been a "good" "efficient" government in the history of man? Government isn't "us acting in concert". It's force. The physics of government: Government robs, enslaves, and kills "its" people. Is there an example of "good efficient government"? I want to move there!

><

Sorry to rant on bout my version of "french archers", but the government is NOT your fiend. It does NOTHING well. There is no substitute for a COMPLETELY free market. And, there will come again where we will have to SHOOT the bastards!

To quote John's blog ... "Argh!"

And that’s the last word.
