QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

http://media.putfile.com/OlbermannSwings

Most chillingly of all, this is the Law and Order and Terror government. It promised protection — or at least amelioration — against all threats: conventional, radiological, or biological. It has just proved that it cannot save its citizens from a biological weapon called standing water.

Girl Captures Gator After Watching TV Show Tue Sep 6, 6:20 PM ET

===<begin quote>===

TARENTUM, Pa. - Crocus, a 2-foot pet alligator escaped from his backyard enclosure, but was captured by a girl who used what she learned on a nature TV program.

Nicki Hilliard and several friends saw the animal swimming in the Allegheny River.

Hilliard said she learned how to catch the animals safely by watching the television show "Crocodile Hunter." The secret is to grab the animal's snout and hold its mouth closed.

The kids put the animal in a beverage cooler and took it to the police station, where it was locked inside a cell until owner Belinda Thomson arrived to claim it.

===<end quote>===

Doesn’t say how old the girl was, but I’m impressed. I’ve listened to that nut case on the CH show and I’m not so sure I’d have done that.

But the lesson that I would like to take away is that people are remarkably adaptable, trainable, and daring. Women of any age are an amazing resource.

Until we recognize the inate ability of the human being, how can we ever understand our limitations. Many of those limitations are in our own minds.

So next time you see an alligator in a river, jump in, hold it’s moth closed, and then figure out what to do next.

If I have one prayer, then it’s “Lord, I’d like a small challenge, please. I’m no saint. Nor a hero.”

May all your alligators be small enough for your abilities but big enough to challenge and reward you.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Smoking sparks court fight between neighbors
Allamuchy woman says fumes waft into residence; smoker says he's harassed
August 21, 2005
BY MATT MANOCHIO DAILY RECORD

Sharon Roth abhors smoking.

The 48-year-old Allamuchy resident is adamant about cigarette smoke not being in her home out of concern for her health and that of her 11-year-old son, David.

Her next-door neighbor, Dan Field, smokes. He lights up outdoors, on his own deck and front porch...  Roth said Field moved in last month and began smoking outside of the condo that he is renting on Wood Duck Court. She said the smoke wafts into her apartment, even with the windows shut.

"I came home from work and my house is filled," she recently said during a phone interview. "It smells like I am a smoker."...

Roth said she received a letter addressed to Field and returned it to him with a note that read, "Can you kindly be neighborly and not murder myself and my son." ....

Roth pointed to the condominium association's rules and regulations, which state, "No noxious or offensive activities shall be carried on, in or upon the Common Elements or in any such Unit, nor shall anything be done therein, either willfully or negligently, which may be or become an annoyance or nuisance to other residents in the Condominium."

Michael J. McFadden, the mid-Atlantic regional director for www.SmokersClubinc.com, a smoker's rights Web site, said the outcome of this dispute likely will hinge on how the condo association or a judge views smoking.

"The trick is, would they define smoking as noxious or offensive?" McFadden said.

"Would they define it that way? Thirty years ago they wouldn't. Today they might ... If they did define it that way, I would think the guy would have a good shot at getting it overruled in court."

McFadden, who authored the book, "Dissecting Anti-Smoker's Brains," ( http://cantiloper.tripod.com ) referred to cases in Ohio and California where neighbors feuded over cigarette or cigar smoke wafting into homes.

"They've become more common as they've been getting pushed by (anti-smoking groups)," McFadden said.

"They're pushing for stuff like this because they see it as a way to de-normalize smoking, to make everything about smoking as difficult and bad as possible. If they hurt smokers in the process, they don't really care. Their goal is the end of smoking all over the world."

The Associated Press
September 5, 2005, Monday, BC cycle
SECTION: Washington Dateline
HEADLINE: Road salt blamed for rising salinity in Northeast streams
BYLINE: By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer
DATELINE: WASHINGTON

The amount of salt dissolved in streams in the Northeast is rising and chemicals used to clear snow and ice from the roads are being blamed.

"We're basically hardening the watersheds and feeding them a high-salt diet. There is a direct connection between the number of driveways and parking lots we have and the quality of our water," said Sujay Kaushal of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science in Frostburg, Md.

Kaushal and colleagues tested water in streams in rural areas of New Hampshire, upstate New York and Maryland, comparing the amount of dissolved salt over several decades. Their findings are reported in Tuesday's issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We think that the salt has built up in the ground water, so even if we quit applying it, it would still be slightly salty for decades," Kaushal said in a telephone interview.

There are alternatives methods of deicing, he added, but they have side effects too. "The problem is the number of roadways," he said, saying the number being built should be limited.

In New Hampshire's White Mountains, some streams exceeded 100 milligrams per liter of chloride on a seasonal basis, the researchers said, similar to the salt level in the mixing region where the Hudson River meets the ocean.

Salt concentrations measured in the same streams in the 1970s were around 10 mg per liter, Kaushal said.

A liter is a bit more than a quart and a milligram is about one-thousandth of the weight of a paper clip. EPA's safe drinking water limit for salinity is 500 mg per liter.

<extraneous deleted>

Kevin Farley, a professor of ecology at Manhattan College, said he was not surprised by the findings as there has been concern about salt runoff for years. Farley was not part of Kaushal's research team.

Jasper Gerald,

I checked and Yahoo thinks you are getting it. Are their spam filters in <privacy invoked> ? I don't use it so I don't know. I'll investigate. But, my guess is that a spam filter is "helping" you by diverting such offensive content as alumni news. After I send you this, I'll send you a test message from the Distribution group and if you don't see it then you know it's being "trapped". OK?

John'68

[JR:  I was tempted to say a stack of hundreds. But then not everyone thinks I’m funny. Like when I say double the subscription price. Didn’t hear anything back so I am assuming it’s the filters. ]

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

===<begin quote>===

National Guard troops who should have been in New Orleans are instead in Iraq. "Nation building" is no part of the National Guard's purpose. The Department of Defense has 1.4 million soldiers in uniform, more than enough to meet alleged troop requirements in Iraq. But instead the Federal government has imposed heavy burdens on National Guard members, separating them from their families and careers, and diverting them from their true purpose. This has contributed to the catastrophe in New Orleans and endangered the American people. DownsizeDC.org is mounting a campaign to compel Congress to bring home all of the National Guard, and to never again deploy them overseas except in the event of a direct attack on the United States by a foreign nation. If you would like to send a message to Congress supporting this reform, click here: http://action.downsizedc.org/wyc.php?cid=34.

===<end quote>===

Can you spell “back door draft”.

There is a reason that the dead old white guys didn’t authorize a standing Army.

You know, they authorized a Navy, but not an Army.

Think it was an oversight?

From the guys who spent a day quibbling about “in-alien-able” versus “un-alien-able”, I don’t think so!

These are the same guys who had just spent the better part of their lives (maybe not in chronological years but in emotional ones) and their fortunes facing the world’s best standing army. They specifically said Army for no more than two years. Then like most humans forgot about it.

What do you think all these alphabet soups of “police” like FEMA are other than a standing army. Sigh.

If Katrina doesn’t wake you up to:

(1) the inability of government to protect you.

They had 48 hours warning and they used it to write memos but did NOT tell their people to get down there.

(2) the stupidity of our “employees”.

The Navy ship that was standing off NOLA but could get anyone to order them in. The bozos who turned back the WalMart trucks. It just goes on and on.

(3) the absolute evil they represent.

Searching unconstitutionally the poor unfortunates trying to get into the Superdome supposedly for drugs, alcohol, and weapons and then leaving them defenseless and alone. Who can defend the rapes reported? Who can defend making the young, the old, and the sick for up to four hours to get in? Who authorized them to require picture ids to match the prescription drugs they had? Who can defend denying them the water needed to sustain life?

As a final thought, I think the image of “government help” is the jack booted thug separating the little child from his small pet dog before busing him off to the Houston concentration camp.

Lest you think that this was a mistake. Think of the nazi death camps, the soviet relocation of the peasants, and the re-education camps of the North Vietnamese. Think it can’t happen here – how about the “Internment of Americans of Japanese ancestry” in WWII.

It disgusts me.

But it doesn’t surprise me.

I don’t care if the politician is a D or an R, they all should be ashamed. But they won’t be.

Are you?

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
