Exhortation

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050411/D89DAGE00.html

===<begin quote>===

50 years ago on April 12, Salk's former teacher and mentor at the University of Michigan, Dr. Thomas Francis, declared that Salk's vaccine was "safe, effective and potent."

===<end quote>===

THE WORLD LOST A GREAT MILKMAN

I have enough miles on the odometer to remember what a break thru this was. I was too young to remember much. But, I remember being hustled to the doctor for the vaccination. I remember it cost a lot of money. People paid doctor’s bills in cash in those days. Insurance was unknown. Except for government workers, but that’s another story.

My cousin was a healthy handsome vigorous five year old, so I am told, when he was struck by polio. As a result of the treatments, he contracted encephalitis. I only saw the result. He could communicate but you had to listen real hard and concentrate on the noise to decode the words. I was such an ass in those days. I only could see the sickness and not that a real intelligent person was locked inside a twisted body. I always remember that he would say that when he got better he wanted to be a milkman and walk about and talk to people. I guess my family exposed me to William to try and give me some sense about how lucky I was to live in “modern times” worth good medicine and lots of opportunity. He died when I was still young. His was the first non-old person’s death that I remember. He fought every day to “get better”. The women in our family took excellent care of him. And, the men always took him “out”, even if it was just to the park and chatted with him. The kids, like me, were just unconscious.

Any way, the anniversary of the vaccine reminded me of why I am firm believer in Life. It belongs to the Almighty, who can do without our strange notions of the value of life, what is the good life, and the quality of someone else’s life. The universe is managed quite nicely without us butting in to those decisions. Life, decisions about when it begins, and when it ends is the above my pay grade. And I am sure that if there is a heaven as we think of it, the milk is being delivered by a sweet soul of large robust healthy man who always has time to stop and chat along his route. He taught me that maybe the best thing in life is just to have the capability of being a milkman. That was a big lesson for a healthy kid to learn.

And, I never forgot that lesson.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Business & Finance Magazine

HEADLINE: Banking On The Single Market

International banks in Ireland have built their businesses on the success of the EU single market, but there is still some work to be done before they can fully exploit the opportunities, according to Merrill Lynch's Michael Ryan. He talks to Ciaran Brennan.

Michael Ryan does not hide his admiration for former finance minister Charlie McCreevy, describing him as straight-talking and the right person for the role of EU Internal Markets Commissioner. "First of all, I think he is committed to the single market and doing what he can as internal markets commissioner to ensure that we deliver on that and in a meaningful way deliver on the concept of the internal market," said the chief executive of Merrill Lynch Global Markets & Investment Bank and chairman of the Federation of International Banks in Ireland.

"But he also appreciates that we have gone through a fairly advanced period of legal and regulatory initiative and that we're at the point that adopting a pause is necessary, making sure that we complete what we set off to do in the Financial Services Action Plan and equally importantly making sure the objectives that we set off with when we put together the plan have been achieved."

Ryan welcomes the decision to extend the implementation phase for the Market in Financial Instruments Directive, and agrees with the need from a regulatory perspective to take stock.

"When the Lisbon Agenda was established, it recognised the fact that the opening up of the financial markets would be the cornerstone of delivering what it was looking to achieve, which was the most competitive economy by 2010," he said.

"What is important now - given the amount of work and legislation that has been passed in the last five years - is that we take this opportunity to look at, in practice, how those headline objectives have been delivered and ensure that the particular goals we set off with in those directives are actually being realised in the product that has come out of the EU."

There is also a need for meaningful regulatory impact assessments before embarking on additional regulatory initiatives or programmes, according to Ryan."Commissioner McCreevy has also talked about making sure that any future regulatory initiatives would be subject to appropriate regulatory impact analysis which I think is a huge positive as well. Overall, I think the objective from the European Union's perspective has to be to ensure that new laws and new regulations that are brought into effect improve our competitiveness, remove barriers to realising the internal market and don't just layer complexity upon the existing situation which was the motivator for the new law in the first place."

As chairman of the FIBI, Ryan is only too aware of the need for the Single Market to work in order to expand the opportunities for his members - like all the international banks operating from Ireland, Merrill Lynch is geared towards the sale and marketing of services and products on a pan-European basis. And while he is also aware of the frustrations of the market's shortcomings, Ryan recognises the progress that has been made in the past 15 years.

"If you look at the US, the existing securities laws were passed in 1933 and 1934 and there has been a greater opportunity to work those frictions [between State and Federal law] out of the system," he said.

"The implementation of the passport in 1989 for banks and in 1992 for investment firms in the EU was a significant step that opened up the opportunity for institutions based in Ireland, for example, to provide services on a cross-border basis to any state within the European Union."

According to Ryan, there is a need to create greater harmony in the EU/US relationship in order to avoid the business disruption that could arise from legislation being passed in each jurisdiction - such as the Sarbanes Oxley Act introduced in the US in the aftermath of the Enron and WorldCom scandals to ensure greater corporate accountability, which impacted on EU firms operating in the US, or the EU Conglomerates Directive, which affected US firms in Europe."There should be greater emphasis on transatlantic dialogue around these kinds of issues so that what is clear to policy makers in both jurisdictions is the potential impact that the laws they are proposing or implementing will have on an extraterritorial basis," he said.

"We should be looking to maximise the harmony between the US and the EU not only because of the magnitude of the trading relationship between the two, but also with a view to trying to build on that and to build on more efficient capital flows between the two economies."

Ryan is no stranger to both regions - although born in New York, he grew up in Ireland and returned to the US in 1980 when he was 18 to study and practice law. He returned to Ireland with Merrill Lynch, having previously worked for the bank in London. This has given him a good perspective on the success Ireland has achieved in the past few decades.

"The country has changed dramatically and it is amazing what a bit of opportunity did for people.

Entrepreneurialism has been brought to the forefront," he said.

Ryan's employers have been part of that success, having first established operations in Dublin in 1995. Today it operates two offices in the Treasury building in the city centre and Leopardstown, providing back office support services to affiliates as well as tailored investment management and private banking services to high net worth investors. Last year, the bank announced that it was transferring the back-office element of its European transaction and custody services from London to Leopardstown, where it-will process, clear and settle client transactions for Merrill Lynch's European business. The expansion will see the numbers employed here rise from 520 at present to 700 by 2008.

"We are the second largest office in Europe for Merrill Lynch and, excluding the US, the fifth largest globally.

It has been a significant investment by the firm but we realised during that period of time that a lot of the motivations we had for setting up here 10 years ago have actually been realised in our operating history, and that has reinforced the commitment we have seen over the past couple of years."The establishment of FIBI - an affiliate organisation of the Irish Bankers' Federation which represents 52 international banks in Ireland - also underlines the progress Ireland has made over the past 15 years and, in particular, the success of the International Financial Services Centre which has silenced the critics who said it would never work, said Ryan.

"If you look at the list of FIBI members you'll realise what we have achieved has been remarkable in that period of time," he said. "Even the optimists would probably have been surprised by that. It is a great story and it shows you with the right level of focus from all the stakeholders and with commitment to the right strategic vision, we are capable of doing great things.

The question is how we keep that going, how we position ourselves to attract even more investment and how to help the people here continue to offer competitive opportunity within their own internal organisations, so that they are best positioned to attract more investment into their operations here in Dublin."

The ingredients that made the country so attractive to International financial services firms are still there, he said.

"We are still a member of the European Union, we still have a good workforce and we are still very open to innovation where there are opportunities to do so, as evidenced by the establishment of a covered bond market here," he said."As long as we can maintain that type of approach and flexibility, that emphasis on innovation helps us move further up the value chain in terms of the types of jobs we have here and the opportunities to bring more of that higher-skilled function in here."

While optimistic about continued success, Ryan warns against complacency, pointing out that financial services industry is largely built around capital and people both of which are very mobile.

"The competitive environment has not come to a standstill just because we feel we have achieved our goal," he said. "If we are complacent and consider that our journey is ended because we have got to where we are, 10 years from now we could find ourselves in a completely different space."

But Ryan said there is a renewed vigour on the part of all interested parties - in Government and in the industry itself - in making sure we have identified what the ingredients are to continue to make Dublin grow as a financial centre."If we maintain that same level of focus and strategic vision from all stakeholders that we have seen over the last 15 years, I think we can continue to build on what we have here."

PROFILE:MICHAEL RYAN

Michael Ryan joined Merrill Lynch in 1996 and, in 2002, was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Merrill Lynch Capital Markets Bank Limited in Dublin. Prior to that appointment, he held a number of senior positions at Merrill Lynch in Dublin and London. From 1994 to 1996, Ryan was VicePresident at Credit Suisse Financial Products in New York.

From 1989 to 1994, he was a lawyer with Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft in New York specialising in corporate and securities law.

Ryan is currently chairman of the Federation of International Banks in Ireland, a member of the Financial Services Consultative Industry Panel and serves on the board of directors of a number of companies.

He holds a BA from Manhattan College and JD from Benjamin N Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University.

Pop rock artist says homegrown vibe works for his fans

Consistent album sales. Crowds filled with beautiful young women. Being asked to shoot a video with actor Zack Braff.

Constant touring has its benefits for Gavin DeGraw.

And its drawbacks.

During one of the hundreds of shows that the 26-year-old singer/songwriter has played since the release of his J Records debut "Chariot" in 2003, DeGraw decided that he wanted to interact more closely with his fans, whom he says were positioned behind a barricade 20 feet away.

"It was at a show at Manhattan College and I hadn't slept in, like, days... I hopped in to the crowd and continued singing. On the way back over the barricade, I was too tired to maintain my balance. I felt myself toppling over," DeGraw said, speaking from a venue in Virginia.

"At that moment , I had to make a decision. Either I was going to use the rest of the energy I had to catch myself and then not be able to finish the show, or I was going to let myself fall. And rest. And finish..."

"So I fell flat on my back. And while I was down there, I was just telling the crowd, 'see what I do for you people.' ... I finished the show though."

What DeGraw has also done is continue to return to regions that are connecting with his piano-laden pop rock. His Saturday gig at Nelson Field House on the campus of Bloomsburg University is his fourth show in NEPA in two years.

"I haven't found a (real estate) agent yet. But if I come back again, maybe that's an option," DeGraw joked.

Much of his fan base first heard of the Fallsburg, NY native's music through his monster hit, "I Don't Want To Be," which is still receiving significant radio spins on many formats.

DeGraw realizes he may be forever linked to the song. It is a possibility with which he is very comfortable.

"That song is so important for me. It's autobiographical. It represents me and who I am. It makes a statement, one that I want to continue making... I think many hip-hop and pop songs poorly represent the public in general. I mean, not many of my friends are in gangs or sell drugs or bump and grind... It's a song about being yourself."

In addition to radio, the WB TV show "One Tree Hill" has used the hit as its theme song. De Graw acknowledged the show has helped.

"It's so important to get yourself out there in as many forms as possible. The show was essential for reaching an audience that we normally we wouldn't tap into. The live touring audience is not the popular TV audience... It has really helped mix my crowd."

In that crowd, as witnessed at past shows at the Scranton Cultural Center, Tink's and The Staircase are usually many exuberant young females, a fact that is not lost on DeGraw.

"Oh yeah. That's a good thing...Women are a good thing. I am very attracted to women, especially those that are enjoying the music. I feel like I am watching one of my videos sometimes. "

With "I Don't Want To Be " finally nearing the end of its run on song charts, DeGraw selected the album's title track as the follow up. He spent a day in Los Angeles last week with actor Zack Braff (of NBC's "Scrubs"), who served as director of the video for "Chariot."

"Zack was very cool. He has a great sense of humor and a great imagination. He was very excited about making the video. I just told him what the song was about and he took it form there... The video is kind of a satire of the music industry. ... With the excess of the industry, sometimes you need a chariot to take you away from all of that."

DeGraw said that the concept of the video fits the song.

"The song is about getting past the bullsh*t in life. Putting your career aside when you have to. Getting out of the supermarket for a minute, you know. Just getting away from what might be defining you too much."

Like touring?

"Not yet. I am still having a good time. We were just at the Final Four (concert) in St. Louis.. we'll be on Regis this week. The homegrown vibe is what works for me. It is the best way that I can relate to my fan base. I don't want to lose that."

I appreciate your comment.  Yes, I am going to attend the Manhattan College that you attended.  It was one of my top choices and I am very excited for spring so I can get started.  Thank you for the invitation to your site, I really appreciate it and look forward to checking it out.

Thank you again- Josine Vetrano

Dear Mr. Reinke:

I just happened to Google myself and saw that you gave my blog a mention on the Jasper Jottings of 20th March 2005.

I missed this initially....we've been pretty busy here, what with looking for a new school for Aidan....we're hoping there will be a place for him at the Hawthorne Country Day School.  Conor will be attending Sarah Lawrence's Early Childhood Center in September.

I wanted to thank you for the mention........I appreciate it.

Also....perhaps I will devote some entries to Manhattan related recipes......though, I seem to recall, when I was going to school I seemed mainly to subsist on french fries and soup (not really brain food...but it was one of the cheapest items on the menu, and filling, especially if you knew how to manage the ladle properly)!!

When the weather was fair I would sit at the back of Manhattan (now Miguel) Hall and the squirrels would approach in supplication and I would invariably end up sharing my lunch with them!  The same thing used to happen in the mornings, whenever I might have one of those pre-wrapped slices of cake and a cup of tea.....I guess the squirrels (and the birds) sensed a soft touch.....and they, also, invariably shared my breakfast with me.  They made for pleasant company, though, so I cannot complain.

Thanks again,

Dear John,

I have just read this week’s Jottings and I am afraid that my memory is not all that great. First "Doc" Mullery was in the Class of 1931, rather 1937 as I had reported.

You asked for some other classes: Richard C. Bach was in the Class of 1982, James P. Ward was in the Class of 1956 and Dr. William F. Reilly was in the Class of 1949.

I'm having trouble getting my email through to you, so I hope this works.

I, too, saw this in the paper.  It's a way for companies to get you to fail and then write you up and then fire you.  It's an extreme of "Who moved my cheese?"

Thanks for listing the NP Career Fair.  However, the way that the email comes out it appears that the Fair is on Saturday not this Wednesday. Is it possible to send out a reminder notice to your list for this event again?

Jaspers found web-wise

[JR: For some reason, I was thinking about Google & Yahoo & other web searches. For some reason, I don't know why but I happened upon a news story in Scannery that was old but marked as new. I can't solve the mystery of why on the net old becomes new. Probably some weenie decided to put a new logo on every web page and the search engines say "oh new content". But since this Jasper had a distinctive nemae, and everybody is always Googling themselves to see what is said about them, I was curious if my JJ story would pop to the top in a search. (It does come in the top ten.) But I also found what appears to be a good email address for him. (So, of course, I invited him to join "us".) So since I spent some time on this as R&D, I thought I'd share it with you. If you "Google yourself", let us know if JJ shows up in your top 10. It's a harmless goof off activity. ]

Printing Industry Commentator Dr. Joe Webb Starts New “Blog” at DrJoesBlog.com; Offers Observations About Trends in Printing, Publishing, and New Media
www.DrJoesBlog.com features the analytic commentary of Dr. Joe Webb, 27+ year printing industry veteran, commentator, and consultant. The “blog” is aimed at executives who are curious about the trends of the printing, publishing, and new media markets, anxious for a thoughtful, contrarian analysis and perspective.

===

Harrisville, RI (PRWEB) April 14, 2005 -- Printing industry consultant, futurist, and commentator Dr. Joe Webb announced the availability of his blog, www.DrJoesBlog.com, focused on the discussion of printing, publishing, and new media trends.

Blogs have achieved mainstream status in relatively short time. They have become essential for executives and decision-makers who want to stay on top of news and opinion for new actionable ideas for their industry and are looking for a competitive edge,” said Dr. Webb. “When we look back at this period a few years from now, we will realize blogs served as incubators for many new media publishing ventures.”

Dr. Webb is known for his often contrarian ideas, which help managers and executives question their assumptions and “common wisdom,” improving their strategic planning, and enhancing their ability to see new opportunities. He posts new items to the blog two to three times a week, sometimes more often. “Blogs are a free-form structure; as I get ideas based on the news or industry analysis, I can post them without delay and not be concerned about the time or space constraints of traditional media.”

Dr. Joe Webb’s industry and economic commentary appears every Friday, exclusively at www.WhatTheyThink.com. “The blog supplements my weekly column, where my economic commentary appears exclusively. There is such an intense level of change in the printing and media industries that I found my column could not contain it all. Blogging also creates a closer, more immediate relationship with my audience.”

In 1997, Dr. Webb became known as “Dr. Doom,” as he forecast that the Internet would negatively affect commercial printing shipment after 2000. The industry peaked in annualized shipments at $120 billion in August 2000 and then started its decline. “It dropped rather precipitously, losing about $8 billion in shipments before the tragedy of 9/11 and is now down about $25 billion since then. It’s still declining on an inflation-adjusted basis, but much more slowly,” according to Dr. Webb. “Thankfully, some vendors and printers listened back in 1997 and 1998, and they prepared. Today, low-debt, high utilization printers with the right technologies are doing well as their weak competitors suffer or go out of business. Vendors who had the right market expectations were able to adjust budgets and deploy resources to new markets; those who didn’t had serious financial problems.”

Today, Dr. Webb sees an industry that is re-shaping itself. “Print is one medium among many, and marketers are using print to stimulate use of other media, such as direct mail being used to drive traffic to e-commerce sites.” He also feels that the use of offshore-printed materials from China and India will continue to grow, saying “the industry has to get ready for the time when one-quarter of our printing comes from other countries.” He also feels that U.S. printers should find ways to invest overseas, because “those markets are growing at a rapid rate, and print volumes can grow as those economies expand, even while commercial volume here is declining.”

“Print’s viability as a medium is by no means assured in the long term, as broadband availability grows and the ability to access information instantly is a normal expectation of consumers and businesspeople. But, it’s not as though e-mail or other new media don’t have their own problems. Surveys show that depending on the campaign and Internet providers involved, up to 60% of e-mails are not delivered because of filtering and spam prevention and other security tools. When mailed, print materials have over a 99% delivery rate. Should people trust an electronic medium that promises a range of deliverability of 40% to 99%, or one a traditional one that can guarantee nearly 100% deliverability? E-mail’s low cost and convenience make it a valuable tool for communicators, but its problems mean that diverse, multiple communication methods are essential to be certain that communications reach their intended targets.”

Dr. Webb has advised companies involved in the printing and creative markets since 1987. He earned his doctorate at the NYU Center for Graphic Communications Management & Technology, and holds an MBA in Management Information Systems from Iona College. His undergraduate work in marketing and managerial sciences was completed at Manhattan College.

In 1995, Dr. Webb founded the TrendWatch marketing information service, which was sold to Reed Elsevier in 2000. He has conducted numerous proprietary projects, multiclient studies, and association research programs throughout his consulting career. He started in the industry in 1978 with Agfa-Gevaert’s Graphic Systems Division, and worked at Chemco Photoproducts (now part of Konica) until 1987.

In 2003, Dr. Webb started a column in the industry-leading news site, www.WhatTheyThink.com. His observations in “Fridays with Dr. Joe” have become a “must-read” for the entire printing industry. The column includes his analysis of the economy and advice to industry management. He’s fond of saying “I’m not an economist, but I get to play one on the Internet every Friday.” The column highlights his debunking of industry myths and “common wisdom” with hard data and analytic thinking.

Dr. Webb’s work was recognized by GAMIS, the leading market research organization for the printing industry, when he received their Neil Richards Visionary Leadership Award in 2004.

Dr. Webb, in conjunction with other leading industry consultants and thought-leaders, is in the process of completing a major research project about the commercial printing industry of 2015. He is available for private consultation, sales and planning meetings, and keynote speaking events.

How Walgreens Got Me . . . Once

by Gary North

===<begin quote>===

Walgreens isn’t a bad company. No company that big is bad. But the company is facing tremendous competition on-line and from Wal-Mart Supercenters. To do such dumb cluck things as I have described sends a message: "We ignore the obvious. Our market share is vulnerable." Whatever you do, do it better than Walgreens, beginning with this: Don’t bet your future on Medicare.

===<end quote>===

Lest you think that I only grip about government. Business has it’s flaws and warts. But, at least you have choices. With the government, what choice do you have? And governments kill people.

And that’s the last word.
