In my neverending quest to exploit the inet, here’s an interesting offer:

http://www.streamload.com

“Storage is now free for all files! Streamloaders have Unlimited Storage while Freeloaders get an industry leading 10 GBs of free online storage.”

I, of course, became a freeloader. For Jottings, of course. Unusual for inet-er, but in keeping with my engineering education, I firmly believe that one can never have too much backup. During a “disaster”, there always seems something that goes missing. In my previous corporate and consulting lives, I have preached backup, backup, and more backup. Having lost two hard drives loaded with “stuff” in my career, I can attest to the fact that you never ever get it all back. So, I would urge everyone to become a “freeloader”. Better if you become a “Paid Loader”, but start cheap. And, if you set it up right, and maintain a good recovery discipline, when your hard drive fires, as it eventually will, you won’t lose anything.

P.S.: Jasper Jottings is on my home machine, my personal notebook, the website, and now on StreamLoaders.

=== <begin quote> ===

A 10-year-old girl saved her family and 100 other tourists from the Asian tsunami because she had learnt about the giant waves in a geography lesson, it has emerged. Tilly Smith, from Oxshott, Surrey, was holidaying with her parents and seven-year-old sister on Maikhao beach in Phuket, Thailand, when the tide rushed out. As the other tourists watched in amazement, the water began to bubble and the boats...

=== <end quote> ===

This snippet demos the difference between data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. Pre-disaster, every year, in science classes around the globe, teachers presented data. Some may have been able to make it into information by putting context around it. I bet at least somewhere some time some teacher may have said "if you see X happen". How many filed it away as a bit of knowledge? But this little girl made it into wisdom. The ability to take "stuff", know it's important, and put it into action to me that's wisdom. I am sure that it required a huge amount of self-confidence to tell a bunch of brain dead adults "to get a move on cause trouble's a coming!"

The other report is that no animal's bodies were found. Large animals seemed to "know" to move away, up, or wherever. Only man, in his smug kwon-it-all conceit, was oblivious to the danger. Be interesting to see if any university tries to figure out this one. Sixth sense. We may have one, but, we'll never find it again until we look for it. Like the old joke, where God says, "You have to cooperate and buy a ticket", we have to recognize what we don't know. Like "who wants to be a millionaire", how sure are we that we know it all. As evidenced by that show, we always over estimate our own commands of the data, information, knowledge, and wisdom we have in our "store". Hopefully, us Jaspers are open to learning. Life long learning. It's necessary for sheer survival.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Fernando Almeida explica sustentabilidade

Daily News (New York)
January 18, 2005 Tuesday
SPORTS FINAL EDITION
SECTION: SPORTS; Pg. 76
HEADLINE: JASPERS ENJOY A FRESH START
BYLINE: BY SEAN BRENNAN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

IT WASN'T EXACTLY Bobby Gonzalez's New Year's resolution to begin 2005 by starting three freshman, but maybe it should have been.

"It was like pulling teeth to get me to do it," the Manhattan coach said. "But I feel glad now that I did it."

Starting with the Jaspers' game at Wichita State on Jan. 3, Gonzalez decided to insert Jeff Xavier into a starting lineup that already featured freshman forwards C.J. Anderson and Arturo Dubois. Since then the trio has played mostly to rave reviews and last night was no different.

With leading scorer Peter Mulligan saddled with foul trouble, Anderson had a breakout game. He scored 21 points with a team-best nine boards and two blocks, and Xavier (five steals) and Dubois (two blocks) combined to score another 23 points to lead five Jaspers in double figures as Manhattan rolled to a 92-82 victory over St. Peter's last night at Draddy Gym.

"Starting three freshman probably hurt our consistency," Gonzalez said. "We probably lost a couple of battles but it will help us win the war."

After Mulligan (17 points), who sat for nine minutes in the first half, picked up his third foul in the opening moments of the second, Gonzalez was forced to send his senior star to the bench and entrust the Jaspers' fortunes to Anderson & Co. Manhattan (8-6, 3-3 MAAC) barely missed a beat.

In Mulligan's absence, Manhattan built a 63-49 lead with just over 12:00 to go and looked ready to close out last-place St. Peter's (6-9, 1-5). But even with Manhattan seemingly hitting on all cylinders offensively, the Jaspers did have trouble trying to stifle Peacocks guard Keydren Clark.

Clark, who came in as the nation's No. 2 scorer at 25.2 points per game, teamed with George Jefferson to key a run that brought St. Peter's within 65-60 with 9:53 to go.

But that was as close as the Peacocks would get as Anderson, Mulligan and Jason Wingate, who scored a career-best 16 points, engineered a run that quickly built an 84-68 bulge with 3:00 to play and Manhattan coasted to the finish despite Clark's 32 points overall.

"With me it's whatever it takes to help the team," Anderson said after the Jaspers got back on the winning track after a stunning loss to lowly Iona Saturday night. "When Peter was out I had to take some of the scoring load. I had to be more aggressive."

LIKE MOST COACHES who have to prepare for St. Peter's guard Keydren Clark, Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez was more than a little anxious.

"Kee-Kee is unstoppable when you have a week to prepare for him," Gonzalez said. "And we only (had) two days."

Clark may have certainly won the battle last night, but Manhattan won the war. The nation's second-leading scorer netted a game-high 32 points, but freshman C.J. Anderson led five Manhattan players in double figures with 21 as the Jaspers shook off their Saturday loss to Iona and took a 92-82 decision at Draddy Gym.

Jason Wingate added a career-best 18 points, Peter Mulligan chipped in with 17, Arturo Dubois finished with 11 and Jeff Xavier had 10 points with five steals.

The Jaspers found themselves in a bind when Mulligan, the team's leading scorer at 21.5 points per game, picked up his third foul just 2:34 into the second half.

But surprisingly, without Mulligan on the court, the Jaspers were able to build a commanding 63-49 lead with 12:22 to go.

But with Clark and George Jefferson heating up for St. Peter's, Manhattan quickly saw its lead dwindle to 65-60.

But once Mulligan was back in the game, the Jaspers, who saw an 11-point lead evaporate into the loss to Iona, quickly built the lead back to 13 with Mulligan scoring six straight points as part of the 8-0 run.

From there Manhattan (8-6, 3-3 MAAC) bumped the lead up to 84-68 and the Peacocks never got any closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Gonzalez was concerned about last night's game because it marked Manhattan's third conference tilt in five days. The Jaspers defeated Niagara Thursday night.

But the Jaspers showed little wear and tear as they sent the Peacocks (6-9, 1-5) into a last-place tie with Iona in the MAAC.

Manhattan, which rebounded from its second home loss of the season, plays six of its next seven on the road.

The lone home game during that stretch is on Jan. 30 against conference co-leader Fairfield.

Rider, which hosts Manhattan Thursday, edged into a share of that lead at 5-1 in the conference with an 89-69 drubbing of Loyola (Md.) yesterday as part of a MAAC doubleheader at Pepsi Arena in Albany. In the other game, Canisius needed overtime to beat Siena, 84-80. Manhattan visits both of those teams as part of its upcoming road swing.

HEADLINE: RETOOLED JASPERS BACK IN BATTLE
BYLINE: TIM KERRIGAN

When St. Peter’s visited Manhattan College last night, it promised to be a different kind of basketball game than the Luis Flores-Keydren Clark battles staged between the squads the last two years.

Manhattan (7-6, 2-3 MAAC) swept the two-game season series last year, but neither Flores, now with the Golden State Warriors, nor Jason Benton or Dave Holmes are wearing Jasper green this season.

The trio accounted for 94 of the 164 points Manhattan scored in the season-series, and for 49 of the Jaspers’ 79 rebounds.

Flores scored 32 and 24 points to lead all scorers in both games. Clark was a close second, tallying 22 in each.

"Look at St. Joe’s without Jameer [Nelson] and Delonte [West]. Nobody can sustain," Jasper coach Bobby Gonzalez said after Saturday’s loss to Iona.

"We can’t be as good as we were by losing the [league’s] Player of the Year [Flores] and three senior starters for four years."

St. Peter’s (6-8, 1-4 MAAC) retained Clark, who averages 25 ppg this season, in addition to Ron Yates, Correy Hinnant and Terrance Watkins, all of whom are scoring in double figures this season.

It’s also added Todd Sowell, a 6-foot-7, shot-blocking presence from Bishop Loughlin in Queens.

But Manhattan’s addition may be the most noteworthy. C.J. Anderson, a 6-6 forward from Laurinburg Prep (North Carolina), may be the next Jasper to go head-to-head in the box score with Clark.

Anderson was second on Manhattan in scoring (14.7 ppg), second in assists (33) and first in rebounding (8.2 rpg) and field goal percentage (.545).

In a gojaspers.com poll posted to determine the team MVP at this point in the season, Anderson received 53 percent of the votes. Senior guard Peter Mulligan was second with 34 percent. No other player received more than 5 percent.

Despite earning his fifth MAAC Rookie of the Week award last week, Anderson has competition for best Laurinburg Prep alum. Longar Longar, a 6-11 Sudanese center at Oklahoma, scored 27 points starting for injured center Kevin Bookout on Dec. 30 against Florida A&M.

Still, the Jaspers will certainly take him. Manhattan, struggling to maintain New York area dominance, is thrilled to have a rookie as talented as Anderson who can rebound.

"We’ve never been a great rebounding team, and we knew we were going to be weaker when we lost Dave Holmes," Gonzalez said.

Anderson has helped Manhattan fill that void. His numbers suggest he may be the answer to many other questions for the Jaspers over the next few years.

AS HIS PLAYERS left the huddle with 36.5 seconds to play in a tie game yesterday, Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez had one final reminder for them.

"We told the guys we used our timeouts," Gonzalez said.

But seconds later, when Peter Mulligan couldn't find anyone with the inbound pass and with the Jaspers perilously close to a five-second violation, Mulligan turned and signaled for a timeout.

"I was aware of it early in the play," said Mulligan, who finished with 22 points. "I just had a mental mistake. I just forgot. It was a tough play."

And a technical foul.

And when Iona's Steve Burtt sank the two ensuing free throws, it made the difference in a wild 69-67 Iona victory yesterday at Draddy Gymnasium.

"We have to blame ourselves for not getting the ball in," Gonzalez said. "Iona just did a good job of denying us. But it never should have come down to that. This isn't on Peter."

Indeed, it looked like Manhattan (7-6, 2-3 MAAC) was all set to log another home 'W' when the Jaspers opened up a 60-47 lead with 8:19 to play. But then the tide began to turn.

"We preach defense," Iona coach Jeff Ruland said. "So we tightened our belts and made some plays down the end."

And the one making the bulk of those plays was Greg Jenkins. Iona's 6-9 senior center had his finest game of the season with a career-high 30 points and seven rebounds. He was so dominant that he helped foul out both Arturo Dubois and Guy Ngarndi to leave Manhattan shorthanded in the final seven minutes. And from there Jenkins continued his dominance around the basket, scoring 11 points down the stretch, including a layup with 42.3 seconds to play that tied the score at 67.

"From the start, Coach told me I could take over inside,' Jenkins said. "This was a much-needed win. Some days it comes from Ricky (Soliver), some days it's Steve Burtt. Today I stepped up."

Jenkins, who came into the game shooting just 64% from the free throw line, nailed 10-of-14 in the game, including 8-of-11 in Iona's 22-7 run over the final 8:19. Asked if this was his best game of the season, Jenkins answered, "You could say that."

The win, the first on the road for Iona (5-10, 1-5) this season, helped put the brakes to a four-game losing streak and gave the Gaels their first conference win. Soliver had 13 points while Burtt added 10.

"It's about time," Ruland said. "Hopefully this will be a turning point and we can build off of it."

HEADLINE: JASPERS COOK UP ANOTHER HOME WIN
BYLINE: BY SEAN BRENNAN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

SINCE ARRIVING in Riverdale at the start of the 1999-2000 season, Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez has helped transform Draddy Gym into a house of horrors for opposing teams.

"Maybe it's the bandbox atmosphere or our style of play," Gonzalez said. "We're just confident here. We get a lot of energy from this place."

The Jaspers were 11-1 at home last season, bested only in Gonzalez's tenure by the Jaspers' 12-1 mark in 2001-02. The numbers are staggering, a 50-12 home mark heading into last night's MAAC matchup with Niagara. It's enough to leave hapless opponents to wonder, "Who's your Draddy?"

Last night, Niagara became victim No. 51.

With Peter Mulligan scoring 32 points and freshman C.J. Anderson adding 15 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, Manhattan pulled away late in the second half for a 78-72 victory. It was the Jaspers' seventh straight victory over Niagara, including the championship game in last season's MAAC tournament.

"I think we just play a lot more loose, a step faster, when we play at home," said Mulligan, who scored 20 of his 32 in the second half. "We just get excited being at home. We just seem to get up."

And no one was more up than Mulligan, especially as he singlehandedly carried the Jaspers (7-5, 2-2 MAAC) through a huge chunk of the second half. Niagara (9-5, 4-2) was trailing 43-40 with just over 16:00 to play when Mulligan caught fire. The 6-5 senior swingman scored the Jaspers' next 14 points as Manhattan opened up a 57-48 lead midway through the half.

But after a five-point effort in the first half, Niagara's Juan Mendez also began to heat up on his way to a 20-point, 11-rebound night. When he completed a three-point play with 2:44 to play, the Purple Eagles were within 66-63.

But Mulligan had an answer, hitting three free throws over the next 50 seconds. Junior guard Jason Wingate, who scored 11 points, drained all six of his free throws in the final 32 seconds and the Jaspers erased the sting of an unexpected loss at Marist on Sunday.

"This shows we can still play with anybody in this league," Gonzalez said, although league doormats Iona and St. Peter's visit Draddy tomorrow and Monday.

Mulligan, who was three points away from his career high, continues to grow into the role of leader in the absence of Luis Flores, last year's senior catalyst.

"Peter Mulligan is not being talked about a lot," Gonzalez said. "Not as a go-to guy or a star in the conference. He doesn't have that rep right now. But he really deserves that and I think he's going to prove that as we go along."

Hi Chris, Quick story. It's nothing you did. Someone labeled Yahoo as a "Spammer". And, put Yahoo on the "black hole list". It's a common internet resource to id spammers. All mail from those on the list is sent to the "balck hole", if you follow "their" methodology. Who that is I don't know? The College sucks up the "black hole list" and applies it. Hence all mail from Yahoo goes into the bit bucket. Since Jottings is distribute from Yahoo, bang your mail never gets to you. Aren't you glad they are "protecting" you? These anti-spam strategies don't work because of the innocent victims it creates. Sometimes they black hole by ip address or ip address range. So yoou will find that you sometimes can't get to site or get email from whole gobs of people. Arghhh! So, if you want to shift the email to another address, you can (1) do it ofr yourself at Yahoo; or (2) tell me to do it -- I have to reinvite the new address and nuke the old one. Your choice. Advise. John'68

For Immigrants, America Is Land of Obesity, WebMD

Summary: After 10 years in the U.S., immigrants start resembling the average American -- they gain weight, according to a new study.
Updated 12/14/2004 8:55:27 PM
By Jeanie Lerche Davis

=== <begin quote> ===

Dec.14, 2004 -- After 10 years in the U.S., immigrants start to gain weight, according to a new study.

While immigrants are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, little is known about weight gain among them. Immigrants typically come from countries where obesity is not the norm. But what happens after they emigrate to the land of fast food and traffic? Do they get any lifestyle counseling on diet and physical activity?

After all, "immigrants face more barriers to health care and are less likely to receive preventive health care than persons born in the United States," writes lead researcher Mita Sanghavi Goel, MD, MPH, a professor of internal medicine with Northwestern University in Chicago.

=== <end quote> ===

Interesting. I have commented before about the guy coming to the US, who said that he had wnted to come here after he saw on TV that our poor people were fat. That is an interesting commentary. This finding confirms that. America is the land of opportunity. You get here and you too can be fat. Not in the sense of lazy, but in the sense of a little work and you to can enjoy the closest thing to Eden we have on this planet.

Capitalism means that the only way to get rich is to get some one to give you a funny colored piece of paper. You can talk about exploitation, and how Sam Walton and Bill Gates are terrible. BUT, recognize the fact that if you gave as many of your fellow human beings what they wanted, you to would be rolling in dough. Was the system envisioned by God for post Eden existence? How would I know! But, until someone comes with something better, here to instances of testimony that these people think it is pretty good! No let's focus on not letting the government mess it up. Like taxes, minimum wage, and anything else that distorts the fundamental beauty of the new Eden.

IMHO!

And that’s the last word.
