Dear Jaspers,

643 have registered on the Distribute site. There are 15 bouncing but Yahoo keeps "probing" to try to get thru. If you aren't receiving it, please check your box or your "spam solution"! I try to let subscribers know through alternative means – typically if I have an alternate email or ussnailmail address in my Corex Cardscan database. From time to time, if I have time, I'll even do research in old messages to find alternatives. But, it has to be ultimately the reader's job to stay connected.

I am somewhat concerned that I have no read on how many readers we have other than those that get the distribution. Any thoughts? Issue secret decoder rings?

I am going to try to reach out to those Jaspers I found on Ryze. Read about my adventure at http://trytouseryze.blogspot.com/ . Feel free to comment there or here.

HOWEY IN THE HILLS, Fla. -- A Central Florida woman is a trailblazer, and it might never have happened if it wasn't for a brush with death.

Angie Washo, of Howey in the Hills, just became the first female motorcyclist to compete in the Alaska Canada Road Rally, WESH NewsChannel 2 reported.

She's also the first amputee to do it. Two years ago, she lost her leg when she was hit by a drunk driver while riding her motorcycle.

She said it's an incident she'll never forget

"I sat up and I looked around and I said, 'I'm OK.' And I looked down and looked back at my leg and realized no, I was not OK."

But she was alive, and thanks to a state-of-the-art prosthetic leg, she's back on her feet.

"As I take a step, it spring loads. Yes, I can jump! I can jump," she said of her new leg.

Washo said her leg is pretty stable. She has put it to the test by fishing, scuba diving and even skiing.

"All of my life I've tried to be all the way alive. You see a lot of people who are not all the way alive. They're barely getting through life, they're going through jobs they hate, just waiting for the weekend," she said.

"They're watching football on the weekend doing nothing. They're hanging out. They're planning on some day they're going to have fun. Some day they're going to enjoy things. Some day they're going to have adventures. Some day they'll spend time with their kids. Some day they're going to get to know their spouse better. Whatever, it's always some day. And for me, that's not all the way being alive."

Here's one with two messages. Get over whatever problem I think I have AND get living! Go advice for everyone.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

"This is a Big Time for America. It's not just another election, not merely about a list of issues – even though some of those issues are huge, including the deliberate downsizing of our middle class and the deadly war of lies in Iraq.

What's at stake on November 2nd is the very idea of America itself – the historic idea that we might actually build a society based on our egalitarian ideals of economic fairness, social justice, and equal opportunity for all. The moneyed elites – presently working through !@#$%^&*$$! – have decided that America should no longer bother pursuing egalitarianism. They are asserting a new ethic of privilege, declaring that the role of government is to take care of the good fortunes of the few...and not worry about the well-being of the many. In their view, they're the top dogs and the rest of us are just a bunch of fire hydrants.

Wielding their administrative blow-torches and legislative monkey-wrenches, they are jerry-rigging America's rules so that money and power flow uphill, out of our neighborhoods into their corporate suites and offshore bank accounts. They're seizing control of every decision that affects our lives – from wages to taxation, from what's in your dinner to what's in your daily news feed, from who goes to college to who goes to war.

They're turning our America – our democracy – into their America of plutocracy and autocracy. As I travel around the country, I find that most people are aware that something fundamental has gone wrong, that this is not the America they thought they were born into. I recently saw an old pickup truck with a bumpersticker that asked: "Where are we going? And what am I doing in this handbasket?" People know that we're being led down some rabbit trail, off of America's true path toward egalitarianism.

I believe we're in another one of those "When-in-the-course-of-human-events" moments that Jefferson wrote about. It's a Big Time for America – time to take our country back."

Someone, I think it was Leno, about selecting the old white guy from Harvard with a blue suit who wore a red tie or the old white guy from Harvard with a blue suit who wore a blue tie! That's the choices the two major parties offer you. Especially if your state is not a "battle ground" one, your vote for either man (I won't say "bozo" because I can't say for sure that they are not "honest".) makes absolutely no difference. So what do you have to loose? Maybe we can get back to what the dead old white guys gave us – freedom!]

Dear John,

The NY Times Sunday Magazine had an Advertising supplement that carried an ad for Manhattan but also contained a narrative about the Colleges that had ads, which was reasonably well done. The write up on St Johns follows the Manhattan piece and starts: "The Jaspers might find stiff competition over in Queens . . . " and ends with a Jasper reference. Even if St. Johns won't play us this year, we are still on their minds.

                              Best,
                             Mike McEneney, Esq. '53 BBA

[JR: As I understand the MC marketing plan, StJ's is not our competition for students, SUNY is our arch enemy. I think the NCAA should adopt some policies that level the playing field – maybe all "scores" should have a felony-index or grade-point-index adjustments. At the very least, for those sports where schools give athletic scholarships, the right to give a future scholarship should be "encumbered" for four years if the student athlete doesn't graduate. I think that coaches like Joe Paterno, who's program graduates 90+% of his scholarship athletes, should get an advantage over those that graduate near zero. MC is at a distinct competitive disadvantage to the sports mills like StJ. If the NCAA is other than a tax-exempt monopoly that skirts the edge of our sensibilities, then it should be held to account. I don't understand why a state's taxpayers have to fund SUNY --  this unconstitutional government intrusion into education. And, don't get me started on the other things that come out of there "institution of higher learning"!]

John,

I believe Dennis Day's brother, Jim, is also a Manhattan alumnus.   If I recall correctly, Jim and Ann had 12 children.

Dennis was an active Manhattan alumnus who often performed at a variety of College and alumni functions including the Charter Centenary dinner held at the Waldorf-Astoria in 1963.  Some of these performances included the Manhattan College Glee Club, which he served as president as an undergraduate--a fact noted by your reporter.  Some Northern New Jersey alumni may remember his performance at a a theatre party for the Manhattan College Club of Northern New Jersey following a Paramus performance of No No Nanette in which he starred during the mid 70s.

His Danny Boy always brought down the house.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://www.harrybrowne.org/articles/MarthaStewart2.htm

What the Martha Stewart Case Means to You
by Harry Browne
March 5, 2004

<snip>

Yes, I'm outraged by the Martha Stewart case.

She probably will go to prison - on invented charges and suspect evidence.

Is there anything to be learned by all this?

Yes. What you know about these cases is only what the government claims. Just as with Iraq, everything we think we know actually originates with some government employee - leaking the "truth" to people in the press, who dutifully report these planted claims as facts.

This is why the Founding Fathers were determined that the federal government would have nothing to do with such matters as business dealings. They knew that government officials - armed with threats of fines and imprisonment - would inevitably abuse such powers.

Thomas Jefferson wanted America to be an agrarian society, but he didn't use the power of his office to aid farmers at the expense of commercial interests. He knew that politicians must be bound down by "the chains of the Constitution," as he put it.

Today, however, the guns of the government are available to force you and me to conduct our lives in whatever way such paragons of virtue as George Bush or John Kerry want us to live.

It seems that nothing is a matter of persuasion anymore. Everything is a criminal matter - subject to fines and imprisonment.

Whatever isn't compulsory is prohibited.

<snip>

Go get'em Harry! Politicians scheme, lie to us, and lie about the fact that they lied. How come they rarely get prosecuted? As everyone knows, everyone does it. Nope. Call them as seen. Right or wrong. But, lie? Never. It's always the cover up that gets you in trouble. In the Martha case, she should have said come and get me. Changing computer records and then changing them back makes one look guilty. She didn't get convicted of "insider trading" (a dubious law at best!), but of "lying to the authorities". And, she gets more time than a whole bunch of violent crimes. Whata joke. They was out to make a name for themselves at your expense. Never, ever, backpedal against your own interests. The government needs to be "strangled" by starving it for money. Put not-so-Gentle Ben back in its cage. IMHO!

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
