Dear Jaspers,

643 have registered on the Distribute site. There are 15 bouncing but Yahoo keeps "probing" to try to get thru. If you aren't receiving it, please check your box or your "spam solution"! I try to let subscribers know through alternative means – typically if I have an alternate email or ussnailmail address in my Corex Cardscan database. From time to time, if I have time, I'll even do research in old messages to find alternatives. But, it has to be ultimately the reader's job to stay connected.

I am somewhat concerned that I have no read on how many

39-year-old ``Pops'' Frisby sees first college action

By PETE IACOBELLI, AP Sports Writer

September 25, 2004

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- ``Pops'' Frisby finally made his college football debut -- at the age of 39. Tim Frisby, the Army veteran who is a walk-on receiver for South Carolina, went in for the Gamecocks' final four plays in Saturday's 17-7 victory over Troy

Frisby got a loud cheer from the crowd of 79,700 at Williams-Brice Stadium when he entered the game with 2:13 remaining, then lined up by himself wide to the right as the Gamecocks ran through the middle to finish things off.

When it ended, he got back slaps and pats from teammates and coaches.

``I'm just glad coach put the trust in me to go out there,'' Frisby said. ``I was glad to be part of it.''

The NCAA gave Frisby, a 20-year Army vet who retired this summer, clearance to play for the Gamecocks this week. Eligibility questions from his time at two Allentown, Pa., high schools kept him on the sideline for games against Georgia and South Florida.

Frisby was among five Gamecocks who led the rest of the team in pre-game calisthenics Saturday. He raised his helmet to the sky like his teammates during the opening kickoff. Then he stood on the sideline and watched, until making his debut at the end.

But Frisby is quite different than his teammates. He's got six children, and the oldest -- who is 16 -- is nearly the age of some of those teammates.

During his military career, Frisby was a Ranger-qualified member of the 82nd Airborne. He served in Desert Storm and the conflict in Kosovo.

He carries a 3.8 GPA in broadcast journalism, which he hopes to turn into a second career

John's figured out my pattern. I like to lead with something that exemplifies what I consider the "Jasper spirit". The fact that these exemplars come from non-Jaspers only means to me that we have a poor communications channel. I am sure that each of us in our own way do "great things". As a group, we seem – other than the "politicians" – seem to be afraid to be seen as "blowing our own horn". I'd like to transform that into "here's something neat that I am doing". Hence I am always open to passing along what ever my fellow alums find interesting.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

"Collector-in-chief" John

BUSINESS in the Burbs: Mooney president of business organization
http://www.thejournalnews.com/newsroom/092204/d0122burbs.html
The Journal News.com - Westchester,NY,USA
 (Original publication: September 22, 2004)

The Westchester County Association yesterday officially removed the word "acting" from acting President William M. Mooney Jr.'s title.

Mooney began leading the county's key business advocacy group in June 2003 on an interim basis after the retirement of President Lawrence C. Dwyer. Mooney will continue in the role of senior vice president at Independence Community Bank in Elmsford, as he has since last year, Independence spokesman Michael Armstrong said.

In a statement announcing the promotion, association board Chairman Andrew Robel praised Mooney for stepping into the role at a time when the group wanted to move in a new direction. The association has set up a committee structure to advocate more aggressively for business interests in the region in areas that include health care, education, government affairs, and economic development.

A search committee was picked last year to find a successor for Dwyer; Mooney had expressed interest in the post.

Mooney's background in regional banking goes back 45 years. He joined Independence in 2001, after serving at Orangeburg-based Union State Bank as executive vice president. Mooney also worked in retail and small business activities at Chase Manhattan Bank and Chemical Bank.

He has been chairman of United Way of Westchester and Putnam Counties, St. Thomas Aquinas College, American Heart Walk, Westchester Partnership for Economic Development, CYO Rockland County, Red Cross Rockland County, and Rockland Center for the Arts. He recently received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which recognizes exceptional humanitarian efforts and service to the nation.

Mooney holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Manhattan College in Riverdale.

University Wire
September 23, 2004 Thursday
HEADLINE: After 0-29 run, Lions have won 2 in a row, besting Manhattan College
BYLINE: By Lauren Clark, Columbia Daily Spectator; SOURCE: Columbia U.
DATELINE: NEW YORK

With their five-game win over Manhattan College Wednesday night (18-30, 30-27, 28-30, 30-24, 16-14), women's volleyball is finding itself in unusual circumstances: A winning streak.

It may just be two matches, but for a team which could not win one match all of last season, that streak is a big one.

"I think we're going in the right direction," Head Coach Monica Holmes said. "This means that we have a little momentum. We're learning how to win and tasting success."

The Lions now have a 2-8 record, which, though not exactly the best tally in the Ancient Eight, is miles better than their 0-21 mark last year, and provides some encouragement to the many administrative efforts that have been made to pull the team out of the Ivy gutter.

In last night's match, the Lions came out strong on all cylinders, with first-year right setter Natalie Gerling leading them offensively with a career-high 21 kills.

"I had called in our huddle before the match and told the team In this match Natalie has to be our go-to person,'" Holmes said. "Just because their left side blockers as a team were a great target for her, so she responded in time."

The tactic worked, and the Light Blue offense came through to pull away in several tight games.

Things weren't entirely smooth for the Lions all night though. In the first game, Holmes submitted the wrong lineup, causing several players to switch positions. The lopsided score resulted as the Light Blue were unable to establish the flow they had been training to do.

After that first game, the Lions were able to calm down and return to their original game plan.

The next two games went back and forth, with each team taking one, but only by a slight margin. In the fourth game, Columbia held on to its lead with a .419 attacking percentage and pulled away with the six-point victory, evening the match out at two games apiece.

In the rubber game, the Lions' system hit its stride and was able to hold off a fighting Manhattan team from taking the final game.

"That's when I really felt comfortable with the tempo of the match," Holmes said. "Our offense pulled things together. Once we really started playing in the fifth match, I wasn't worried."

Gerling added 12 digs to her 21 kills to give her a double-double on the night. Sophomore Nikki Learned and first-year Cassie Ligh also had doubles on the nigh.

The mid-week win gives them incentive and encouragement going into their road trip to the Marist College Invitational this weekend.

[JR: For some reason, I don't always have everyone's class years handy. I have everyone I come across in a Corex Cardscan database. (It's the thing that periodically requests an update helping me to keep a secondary channel capability to send out usmail when email fails.) It helps if people tell me class years when they write it.]

Subject: Anton F. Miorin '52

Dear John,

It is with sadness that I advise that a member of a great Manhattan College Family passed away on Monday, September 27th. Anton F. Miorin '52 CE died at his home on his "spread" (400 acres) in New Mexico. With him at the time was his wife of 50 years, Dorothy, his daughter  and two of his sons.

Anton's father was also an Engineer and was a member of the Class of 1937. His identical twin sons Todd '93 and James '96 are both graduates of the Engineering School. His grandson, Michael Mitchell graduated as a Civil Engineer in May of 2004, keeping the Miorin tradition alive.

Anton, or Tony, as many of his friends called him was a great friend of mine since the 1940's. We both grew up in Woodlawn and while he was year ahead of me we became close. When he wanted to attend his Junior Prom at Manhattan but did not have a car (or a License) we got together and bought a car for $25 (a 1939 Packard Six-Twenty 4 door) from a classmate of mine who had been drafted. It ran and got us to the Prom and back. Anton eventually learned to drive on that car. One thing that kept us close over the years is that he was on a date with my wife Cathie when I met her! It was at the 1949 Saint Barnabas High School Tea Dance when such tings were in vogue.

Anton went on to receive his Masters from the University of Michigan, (where he met his wife Dorothy) and had a very successful career with a Sanitary Engineering Firm in Harrisburg, Pa.

There was Mass on Thursday September 30th at his parish Church in New Mexico, to be followed by a Mass in Harrisburg before his burial there at a date to be announced.

                                          May he Rest In Peace!
                                                 Mike McEneney, Esq. '53 BBA

[JR: Mike, thanks for the obit. I am sorry whenever friends are lost. It just seems so much harder to meet and make new ones/ It's like we are born with a fixed number of slots that are used up when some one moves away, changes jobs, or dies. The only thing constant is change! And, my personal corollary, "change is rarely for the better". ]

[JR: Ahh yes the "tea dance". In my time it was the "mixer". The good Nuns and Brothers in an attempt to breed more "catholics" would arrange these events. Properly chaperoned of course to ensure no one would have too good a time. And who could forget "wall flower scraping" where the good Sister would "collect" two girls from the wall and literally drag them to a designated corner where a good Brother had two prisoners (hormones raging), for an of so civil chat for ten minutes or so, and then the two "new" couples would be encourage to go dance to a slow song. And then the process would repeat itself. Eventually, you would get to meet a few nice girls and learn to avoid the dragnet. I guess in a prior life these nuns and brothers worked the english ships impressing of american seamen. Or some other "guard duty"! It was a simpler life in those days.]

Jess McMahon wasn't one of the Damon Runyon type characters that made up the fight game then. First of all, he was a graduate of Manhattan College, and how many guys along Jacobs Beach could make that distinction? Then Jess ran a neat and proper office. His working hours were strictly from 9 to 5 and who ever heard of that among the cigar smoking, card playing characters who usually conducted their business in the back rooms of the many saloons along the way? McMahon himself didn't smoke and purposely kept proper hours in order to maintain a close family life in Far Rockaway.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

Welcome to the bankruptcy economy

Companies saddled with debt and pension obligations are increasingly using bankruptcy to walk away from their promises. Here's what this means for airline and auto workers -- and taxpayers.

By Jim Jubak

<<In a too long for here article, Jubak points out to anyone who will read that we can NOT depend upon promises. Promises of government, promises of companies, implied promises, or even the express "guarantees" of our current illusions.>>

<snip>

While Delta Air Lines (DAL, news, msgs) appears headed for a corporate nosedive, its pilots have opted to pull the financial ripcord.

Faced with a management that has decided to use the threat of bankruptcy as a negotiating weapon, senior pilots have been filing for early retirement by the hundreds and then taking their pension in a lump-sum payout. Every retiring pilot takes a haircut: A senior pilot at Delta gets a one-time payment of about $300,000, only half of what he or she would receive in monthly pension checks over the lifetime of the pension. But the Delta pilots know that pilots at US Airways Group (UAIRQ, news, msgs) stand to receive only about 25 cents on each dollar of their promised retirement benefits as a result of that company's repeated bankruptcy filings.

Welcome to the bankruptcy economy, where companies and governments walk away from long-standing promises to workers, and where workers scramble to collect as much as they can now in fear that even less will be available tomorrow. Oh, sure, management incompetence and shortsightedness have contributed to the creation of the bankruptcy economy. But the underlying causes are demographics -- a rapidly aging population as the Baby Boom generation gets set to retire -- and global competition. U.S. companies are struggling to cut costs so they can compete with overseas companies with younger workforces that receive few benefits, such as pensions or health care, in retirement. Check out your options.

<snip>

<<Good advice to EVERYONE!>>

Lessons from the steel industry

To see the more likely fix to the airline industry's problems -- one that would mean the end of US Airways, however -- look to the troubles in the steel industry that sent just about every U.S. steel company through one or more bankruptcy restructuring beginning in the mid-1970s. The end result was a smaller but relatively healthy U.S. steel industry. The steel industry is now lead by a new player, Nucor (NUE, news, msgs), and it employs far fewer steel workers at far lower total wage and benefit costs than it paid in 1975. Restructuring steel companies scaled back or eliminated pension plans for current workers, dumped pension liabilities for retired workers and scaled back or ended health-care plans for retired workers.

<< screw the retirees! When you are in a lifeboat, standard survival ethics apply. When you are a highly paid executive, survival of your stock options are much more important than the promises made by those before you to the people who got you here. >>

<extraneous deleted>

Government coming up short, too

It's not just corporations who are skimping. The city of San Diego just got caught with a $1.2 billion shortfall in its pension fund for city workers. The city had been using projected earnings from its pension funds -- something allowed under both government and corporate-accounting policies -- to balance its budget and to avoid putting more cash into its pension plans. The city has now been locked out of the bond market and could be forced to file for bankruptcy.

And the Social Security program faces a demographic problem that is very similar to the one at GM. Thanks to the pending retirement of the Baby Boom generation, there are fewer and fewer workers paying into the system and more and more retirees collecting. In 1960, there were 5.1 taxpaying workers per Social Security beneficiary. Today, the ratio is down to 3.3 to 1. And by 2030, there will be just 2.2 workers paying in for every retiree collecting.

All this leads to what I call the bankruptcy economy, named after the most effective, if most drastic, way a private company can remove costs for retirement benefits from its books. Bankruptcy is likely to be the continuing threat in negotiations with workers in industries facing challenges from low-cost competitors. Management will say, just as Delta's management has, "Take the cuts or we go out of business." In some cases, where the competitive gap isn't too large, that kind of forced cost-cutting might work. In others, as the steel and airline industries show, the threat will yield to the reality of bankruptcy. Maybe even multiple bankruptcies.

That's because under current law, bankruptcy is the best available tool for shifting costs from the books of private companies to those of the federal government. A bankruptcy can force the PBGC to pick up a company's pension costs. Think I'm being too cynical and that no company would use bankruptcy this way? In its latest bankruptcy filing, US Airways said that it would be "irrational" to make pension contributions because "it provides no benefit to the estate."

That's because pension plans and the PBGC stand way down the line of creditors in a bankruptcy. For all practical purposes, they have no chance of receiving anything in a restructuring.

The federal government doesn't go bankrupt. It just borrows more money. Run the presses a little longer, or stick taxpayers with a higher bill.

The final costs of a bankruptcy economy aren't simply measured in cash, however. Workers who don't trust management at many private companies will believe even less in management promises. Workers in the public sectors who thought their pensions were guaranteed will go through a rude and bitter awakening. Social Security recipients will get less back just as current workers are asked to put more in. And taxpayers will get socked with the bill and be left with more anger and cynicism.
