Could healthy eating in school cafeterias be the next foodie trend to sweep the country?
The CNN Story
http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/09/13/organic.school.lunches.ap/index.html
No more mystery meat
Some schools go organic for lunch

===<begin quote>===

OLYMPIA, Washington (AP) -- The tempting smell of pepperoni pizza drifted through the air as students poured into the cafeteria.

But 11-year-old Cameron Landry walked straight past the cheesy slices and started piling organic lettuce, pita pockets and blueberries on his tray.

Sounds like a nutritionist's dream. But it's reality at Lincoln Elementary. The school's organic salad bar has proven so popular -- and surprisingly economical -- that all Olympia grade schools now have one.

"The food is pretty good. And it's much better because you actually have a choice," Landry said as he chowed down on salad. "Otherwise, it's 'eat this or nothing!"'

While fried chicken nuggets and cheeseburgers still reign supreme in most cafeterias, a small but growing number of schools are turning to organic food as a way to improve children's health and fight obesity.

The Seattle school district recently adopted a new policy banning junk food and encouraging organic food in school cafeterias. California school districts in Berkeley, Santa Monica, and Palo Alto have organic food programs. And through a program sponsored by the organic yogurt company Stonyfield Farm, schools in Rhode Island, California, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire and Connecticut have or are getting new vending machines stocked with all-organic treats.

"This is the beginning of the sea change," predicted Ronnie Cummins, director of the Organic Consumers Association. "Unfortunately, it's coming at the same time school districts all over the country are squeezed by a fiscal crisis."

===<end quote>===

Well, all the "brain washing" that is going had to have some effect sooner or later. I guess we all have to be thankful that they are eating better. Although note the comment that they are coming for more money! If parents homeschooled, then they'd be in control of what their kids eat.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Business Wire
September 16, 2004 Thursday
DISTRIBUTION: High-Tech Writers; Business Editors
HEADLINE: Rudy Giuliani, Former NY City Mayor and Time Magazine's Person of the Year, to Keynote at Infosecurity
DATELINE: NORWALK, Conn., Sept. 16, 2004

Rudy Giuliani, former New York City Mayor and one of the most successful U.S. Attorneys in history, will present a keynote address at the upcoming Infosecurity event, December 8, 2004, 11:30 AM at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. The presentation, "Leadership in Difficult Times," will also address securing New York now and in the future.

Born to a working class family in Brooklyn, NY, Giuliani learned a strong work ethic and a deep respect for America's ideal of equal opportunity. After attending New York's Manhattan College in the Bronx and New York University Law School in Manhattan, graduating magna cum laude.

In 1981, Giuliani was named associate attorney general, the third highest position in the Department of Justice. In 1983, Giuliani was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where he spearheaded efforts against drug dealers, organized crime, government corruption, and white-collar criminals. Few U.S. Attorneys in history can match his record of 4,152 convictions with only 25 reversals.

In 1993, he was elected the 107th mayor of the City of New York. He was re-elected in 1997 and served a total of two terms. As Mayor, under his leadership, overall crime fell 65 percent, murder was reduced by 70 percent and New York City was recognized by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) as the safest large city in America for five consecutive years. New York's law enforcement strategies have become models for other cities around the world.

On Sept. 11, 2001, America suffered the worst attack in its history when terrorists crashed planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Thousands of New Yorkers were killed, including hundreds of members of the city's uniformed services, who rushed to the scene to lead the heroic rescue of tens of thousands of people. Having narrowly missed being crushed when the Towers fell, Mayor Giuliani immediately began leading the recovery of the city as it faced its darkest hour. Working tirelessly to restore the city and the morale of its residents, Mayor Giuliani was widely lauded for his steady hand during frightening times. For his efforts, he was named "Person of the Year" by Time Magazine, knighted by the Queen of England, dubbed "Rudy the Rock" by French President Jacques Chirac, and former first lady Nancy Reagan presented him with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Freedom Award.

Limited by New York City law to two terms as mayor, Rudy Giuliani founded Giuliani and Partners in January of 2002 quickly establishing the professional services firm as a leader in fields including emergency preparedness, public safety, leadership during crisis, corporate governance and financial management.

In addition to leading Giuliani Partners, Giuliani remains active in public life. His book, "Leadership," was published in October 2002 and became an immediate bestseller. In 2003, President Bush asked Giuliani to head the United States delegation to a major international conference on combating anti-Semitism, held in Vienna.

"It is quite an honor to have Mr. Giuliani address the IT security professionals attending the upcoming Infosecurity trade event," said Scott Temple, Industry Vice President. "Not only will Mr. Giuliani's presentation offer professional enlightenment, it will also offer an inside view of crisis leadership -- a view that many of the IT security professionals who attend the show can relate to."

Infosecurity is produced by Reed Exhibitions, which manages more than 430 trade shows annually worldwide, is a member of the Reed Elsevier plc Group, a world-leading provider of information-driven services and solutions. HEADLINE: TALL ORDER BUT JUNIUS STIRS NEW ARGUMENT
BYLINE: BY Owen Moritz

COLLEGE BASKETBALL hero Junius Kellogg continues to be controversial, even in death.

The 6-foot-10 former Manhattan College star, who blew the whistle on early-1950s point-shaving schemes, died in 1998.

His brother alleges an autopsy was done without the family's permission. While a Bronx judge said yesterday that John Kellogg could not argue that a dead man's "human rights" were violated, he did say the family could ask a jury to determine whether the autopsy was done without family permission.

Junius Kellogg, the oldest of 11 children from Portsmouth, Va., entered Manhattan College in 1950 as its first black player. The next year, he rebuffed bookies' attempts to bribe him and went to authorities.

Thirty-two players from seven colleges would admit to taking bribes to fix 86 games in 17 states between 1947 and 1950.

At his funeral in Portsmouth, Kellogg was hailed as a hero for setting "America straight about doing what was right."

Former Jasper Flores signs with Warriors

The contract was signed yesterday. Now it's up to Luis Flores to make the Golden State Warriors and guarantee at least one year in the NBA. After meeting with team vice president Chris Mullin, the former Manhattan College standout got an opportunity to work out with a couple of his new teammates and was unavailable to comment. "He's going to be the third point guard in their camp," Flores' agent, Jerome Lewis, said. "Chris Mullin confirmed this morning that he's not planning on bringing any other point guards in." If he makes the final cut, Golden State has an option for a second year, according to a league source. Flores was drafted late in the second round by Houston in June and has been traded twice already.

Debate goes on supermarket plan
Written by Candice M. Giove

Manhattan College and Pathmark were met with voices of concern while unveiling their plans to erect a Pathmark Superstore and multi-level parking garage on West 242nd Street and Broadway.

With the dire need for overnight parking for campus residents, Manhattan College President Brother Thomas Scanlan, F.S.C. said that building a garage would help remove some cars from the crowded surrounding streets.

"The College's need for parking has increased and the impact on our neighbors as our resident students compete for the very limited on street parking also has become more problematic." Scanlan said.

The College couldn't go it alone, however, so they formed a partnership with Pathmark.  Scanlan said that the Pathmark would bring many good things to the community.

"The Pathmark will bring three things to our neighbors and community: a 50,000-square-foot, 24-hour, 7-day-a-week, quality retail food superstore. Secondly, there will be job creation that is part of that and, third, it will provide a positive anchor to that area of Broadway," Scanlan said.

The Pathmark, which will be approximately twice the size of Stop 'n' Shop on Broadway, would create around 200 to 250 new jobs. Around 100 to 200 construction jobs would also be created in order to build the store and parking facility.

The College and Pathmark emphasized the desire to minimally impact their neighbors on Manhattan College Parkway.

The Pathmark Superstore and multi-level garage would sit close to Broadway, as far away as possible from the apartment buildings lining Manhattan College Parkway.

Pathmark shoppers, whom planners anticipate will create the heaviest flow of traffic, will enter on Broadway. The supermarket will have a total of 195 parking spots.

Additionally, the Department of Transportation has agreed to allow a cut in the street at 242nd and Broadway and a light to facilitate traffic. Manhattan College students with parking permits would enter by driving under a "collegiate archway" designed to mesh with the school's current architecture on Manhattan College Parkway. There the students, faculty and administration would be able to park in one of the college's 738 spots.

With this 24-hour operation, Land Use Committee Chairman Charles Moerdler emphasized the need for tight security.

The College and Pathmark will both have round-the-clock security guards and security cameras. Also taking up the suggestion of Councilman G. Oliver Koppell, the College has proposed a glass enclosed skywalk, which would allow those who use the College spots to walk from the lot directly onto campus into Hayden Hall.

Still, there were some objections regarding the overpass. Some felt it was not transparent enough. Others felt that students would not utilize it and instead walk in herds across the curvy road of Manhattan College Parkway.

However, according to planners, the Department of Transportation could not install a traffic light to facilitate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic situation. Because of the roadways' winding nature, a traffic light could not be seen by motorists and could potentially cause a dangerous situation.

The construction itself would rise to about 72 feet. The front of the Pathmark Superstore facing Van Cortlandt Park would have all-glass windows. The building and lot would be made with concrete and covered with pre-made brick wall panels. It would also have decorative panels running up and down with a stucco finish.

Delivery trucks would enter the site via Broadway and would go into an underground drop-off bay.

Pathmark also plans to have a closed trash compaction system in the same area. The parking areas for shoppers and Manhattan College drivers would remain exposed, with openings on the western and eastern walls.  Community Board members and residents voiced concerns that fumes would be ventilated in the direction of apartment buildings running along Manhattan College Parkway. A suggestion was made to change the ventilation openings to the northern and southern walls.

Other suggestions included suppressing noise creating by vehicles in the lot.

Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz also offered up the idea to get a government grant for senior shuttles to chauffeur the elderly to the supermarket since public transportation is to Broadway and 242nd Street is limited.

Opening the lot to the College's immediate neighbors was also addressed. However, Scanlan said that because of the tax exempt funds used for the College's portion of the project that would not be a possibility.

In a previous interview with the Riverdale Review, Scanlan said that the college would look to open the lot during the summer for those attending sporting events at Van Cortlandt Park.

Scanlan said at the meeting that he would look into both possibilities.

Manhattan College and Pathmark only gave a preliminary informational hearing this past week. They are expected to present a more finalized project to the Board in three to four months. The project is expected to begin next summer.

Meanwhile, residents from Manhattan College Parkway were advised by the Board to form a group to meet with project planners to discuss concerns.

WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO HARTFORD HAWKS, 3-0

West Hartford, CT (September 17, 2004) - Women's soccer is blanked by the Hartford Hawks, 3-0 at Al-Marzook Field in Hartford, CT. With the loss the Lady J's drop to a 0-5-0 record and the Hawks improve to a 1-4-1 overall record.

The Hawk's Malin Engman didn't waste any time putting the Hawks on top, scoring only 1:36 into the contest. She took a feed from freshman Moa Lennartsson and beat Manhattan freshman goalkeeper Alicia DeFino (Mineola, NY) to the right post.

Engman's second goal came in the 28th minute on a ball served over the defense by Brooke Johns. Engman took the pass and volleyed it into the back of the net giving the Hawks a 2-0 advantage going into the half.

The Hawks had chances in the second half but couldn't put any away until Engman struck for the final time in the 77th minute. Teammate Katie Gardiner dribbled up the left side and chipped a ball into the box that found Engman alone in front of the keeper. She buried the shot into the back of the net making the final score, 3-0.

DeFino played the first half and made one save while allowing two goals. Junior Kiera Fox played the final 45 minutes in goal for the Jaspers and made two saves while allowing one goal. Hawk's goalkeeper Liz Cook was forced to make only two saves in recording the shutout.

Manhattan takes on Fordham on Sunday, September 19 at 1 p.m in Bronx, NY.

LAST MINUTE GOAL GIVES MAINE A 3-2 WIN OVER MEN'S SOCCER

Newark, NJ (September 19, 2004)- Maine junior Adam Chenault put back his own rebound in front of the net with just 22 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Black Bears a 3-2 win over Manhattan today in a game played on the NJIT campus due to unplayable conditions at Manhattan's home field. The Jaspers fall to 1-3-0 on the season, while Maine improves to 2-1-1.

Maine's Kevin Forgett got the Black Bears on the board first when he deflected a redirected shot off Manhattan goalkeeper Collin Leaver on a corner kick 12:13 into the game. Maine doubled its lead just over 10 minutes later when Cooper Friend picked up his second assist of the day, feeding a long pass to Justin Stockford who broke in alone and beat Leaver to the lower right corner.

Manhattan caught a break 12 minutes later, as a Maine defender tried to clear a Joe Pumo crossing attempt, but inadvertently put the ball in his own net for an own goal that brought the Jaspers to within one, 2-1.

The score remained the same until the 63:04 mark, when Justin Schultz, on a direct kick off a restart, placed a shot just below the crossbar that tipped in off of Maine goalkeeper Chad Mongeon to knot the score at 2-2. The goal was Schultz's team-leading third goal of the season.

The two teams battled back and forth through the rest of regulation and the first overtime, as each goalkeeper was called upon to make plays to keep his team in the game. The game looked to be heading towards a draw before Forgett provided the game winner.

The Jaspers were outshot by the Black Bears by a 36-10 count, but made the most of their opportunities to put themselves in a position to emerge with at least a draw in the waning seconds. Leaver had a spectacular game in net for Manhattan, stopping a career-high 17 shots, including seven in the two overtimes. Mongeon made three saves for Maine.

The Jaspers will return to action on Tuesday, September 21, when they travel to Alexandria, VA to battle the 25th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers in a game that is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.

ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE ROSE HILL CLASSIC, VOLLEYBALL SPLITS PAIR

Bronx, NY (September 18, 2004)- Manhattan snapped a nine-match losing streak by sweeping Wagner 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-16) in its second match of the day at the Rose Hill Classic on the campus of Fordham University. Junior middle hitter Maggie Pfeifer, who registered a .625 hitting percentage in the match against Wagner and notched 39 kills during the weekend, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Jaspers hit for a .594 percentage in the first game against Wagner, riding that mark to a season-high .365 hitting percentage for the match. Lori Bambauer notched her first double-double of the season, dishing out 40 assists to go along with 10 digs. Allison O'Neill contributed a season-high four service aces, while Whitney Judkins put away 13 kills for a .500 match hitting percentage.

In the first match of the day, Canisius took the first two games from Manhattan en route to a 3-1 win over the Lady Jaspers (31-29, 30-16, 28-30, 30-26).

Manhattan was led by 14 kills from Megan O'Dorisio and 12 kills from Meghan Plunkett. Maggie Pfeifer and Helena Ward had 11 kills each, while Ashley Davis set a personal season-high with 19 digs. The Lady Jaspers hit .263 to take the third game, but could not overcome a .290 hitting percentage by Canisius in the fourth game.

Canisius, which saw its record move above .500 (5-4), had two players register a double-double. Christina Wildes notched 27 kills and 16 digs while Kim Hoffman totaled 19 kills and 19 digs to pace the Golden Griffins.

Although Canisius is a member of the MAAC Conference, the match does not count in the MAAC conference standings.

With the win against Wagner, Manhattan's record improves to 2-9. The Lady Jaspers will return to the court on Wednesday, September 22, when they will face off against Columbia at Draddy Gymnasium. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

FORDHAM UPSETS WOMEN'S SOCCER IN RIVAL GAME, 4-0

Bronx, NY (September 19, 2004)-Women's soccer dropped a 4-0 decision against Bronx rival the Fordham Rams. The loss drops the Lady J's to a 0-6-0 overall record and gives the Rams their fourth win of the season.  The scoring began in the 17th minute when Fordham's Laura Muzzatti grabbed a rebound in front of the Manhattan net beating keeper Kiera Fox. Ram Breean Daley made it a 2-0 game in the 30th minute when teammate Holly Laubinger played a cross into the box and Daley headed the ball to the top right corner of the net.

The 2-0 score would hold until the half but Fordham came out in the 55th minute and made the score 3-0 after Laubinger fed a through pass to Leah Jerome who beat Lady Jasper Kelly Boyle, who made her first appearance in goal this season for the Jaspers. With 28 minutes left to play Manhattan's Christine Abrams ripped a rebound at the goalkeeper earning a corner kick for the Lady Jaspers. Unfortunately, the Lady J's could not finish the corner kick.

Laubinger closed the scoring with 22 minutes left of regulation time finishing a scramble in front of Manhattan's net.

Kiera Fox played the first 45 minutes for the Lady J's saving six, while Boyle played the last 45 minutes saving five for Manhattan.

The Lady J's play again on Friday, September 24 when they travel to Robert Morris in Pittsburgh, PA. Game time is 1pm.

He'll take Manhattan -- to even greater heights
Aug. 8, 2004
By Gregg Doyel
SportsLine.com Senior Writer

Manhattan capped its record-breaking 2003-04 season by beating Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and taking Wake Forest to the final seconds in Round 2. That was the end of the Luis Flores era, but it was hardly the end of the Jaspers.

Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez is just getting started.

Even with the graduation of Flores, its all-time scoring leader, Manhattan has more momentum than a rockslide. Some of that comes from Flores himself, who was taken in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets, becoming the first MAAC draftee in more than a decade and giving Gonzalez another marquee recruiting point.

Some of it comes from C.J. Anderson, a 6-foot-6 wing from Laurinburg (N.C.) Prep who signed with Manhattan in late May -- turning down Pittsburgh and Georgetown to become the MAAC's highest-rated recruit and the centerpiece of what Gonzalez says could be his best Manhattan recruiting class yet.

Some of it comes from 6-2 DePaul transfer Tyler Smith, rated among the country's top 60 recruits two years ago. Smith's transfer isn't yet official, but he has obtained his release from DePaul and is attending summer school near his Baltimore home with the intention of enrolling at Manhattan this fall.

If all 600 did as well, I'd be reduced to just collating email. A fate to be wished for. Then I could pass on the CIC role to a much younger alum and sick back and read. ]

It's "The Bronx" because the area along the other side of the East River (where today stands Yankee Stadium, among other things) was once a large farm owned by a family named Bronck. They allowed people to picnic along their shore; eventually it became customary for city dwellers to hire boats to travel upriver "to the Bronck's" for summer day trips. The name stuck, but -- in typical New York fashion -- was shortened to The Bronx somewhere along the way.

Just a quick note to update the storm situation:

We made it through Frances without any major damage to people or  property. We lost some tree branches at home, and Dad lost some  shingles and soffits at his house. We lost power on Saturday Sep 4,  around 11 pm, and didn't get it back until sometime Sunday Sep 12  (after Mass, but before my sister came home from work at the hospital.  Since Dad's place had power back, I relocated up there when work  reopened on Tuesday Sep 7.  We were anxiously awaiting Ivan, and then  Jeanne.  Ivan went west and came ashore in Gulf Shores (near Mobile,  AL), and Jeanne seems to be stooging around in circles in the Atlantic.  Let's hope she stays out there until she finally runs out of steam.

Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts. Please keep those who lost  their houses, and their lives, in this incredible season of storms, and  for those volunteers, utility crews  and others who have left their  homes and families to help in Florida, in your prayers.

Peace,

Gerard

Dear friends and family,

For those of you who don't know it yet, Terry and I are relocating to Inverness, FL.  (Yeah, I know there is a hurricane threat, but we figure, what are the chances of another season like 2004?!)  We're building a house between three golf courses in Citrus County, about 75 miles north of Tampa and about a dozen miles from the Gulf.  We've been Virginia residents for over 39 years, and we'll certainly miss the Old Dominion, but we're tired of traffic and winters!

We close on our house in Dale City this Friday (9/22) and will immediately drive southward to an interim apartment in Hernando, where we can monitor (and nag the builder, if necessary) the final stages of construction.

Kaczynski named NFL's CFO

(March 15, 2001) - The National Football League has announced that Barbara A. Kaczynski has been named chief financial officer.

Kaczynski, a 20-year veteran of corporate finance in publishing, advertising and new media, will oversee league-wide financial matters and report to NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. She takes over the position previously held by Tom Spock, who is now executive vice president of new media and enterprises.

Kaczynski most recently was CFO at Austin, Texas-based Netpliance, where she played a lead role in the company's March 2000 initial public offering. In 1999, she was chief operating officer and CFO at Adsmart Corporation, a CMGI Internet advertising company, in Andover, Mass.

Kaczynski's previous experience included 10 years at Time Inc., the $5 billion publishing and entertainment subsidiary of AOL Time Warner. After joining Time Inc. in 1987 as business manager in the consumer marketing division, Kaczynski rose through the ranks, last serving as Time Inc.'s vice president, finance and controller, for her final three years with the publishing enterprise. The scope of her responsibilities included worldwide budgeting, strategic planning and financial reporting, cash management activities, risk and opportunity assessments, merger and acquisition evaluations, and executive-level financial presentations and communications.

The daughter of a former New York City police department detective and a native of New York City, Kaczynski obtained a full academic scholarship and graduated summa cum laude in three years from Manhattan College in 1980.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

<SNIP>

The Forest Service

One of the more notorious Agriculture Department programs is that of managing the many forests owned by the government. The U.S. Forest Service is responsible for managing the National Forest System, which includes 187 million acres of forests and nearly 4 million acres of grasslands.

But because of lobbying and influence by the environmental movement (not allowing clear cutting, allowing buildups of dead brush, all in the name of supposedly protecting endangered species), management of the public forests has become a nightmare, leading to massive forest fires, losses of wood, and often significant and costly damage to nearby private property. Federal disaster payments to compensate losses to private property owners – such as those in the Los Alamos New Mexico area who were wiped out by an out-of-control government-initiated "controlled burn" – run into the hundreds of millions of dollars, if not more. Such payments are never anticipated nor included in the budget for the Forest Service.

For fiscal year 2005, the Bush Administration proposes spending $5.1 billion to manage the public forests and grasslands. Given the lengthy track record of mismanagement and losses and the proven stellar track record of the private sector in minimizing fires, losses of wood, damage to private property, and preserving endangered species, federally owned forests and grasslands should be put up for sale to the highest bidder. In addition to saving the $5.1 billion per year now wasted on the Forest Service, the government could sell off the lands, raising $100 billion or more that could be used to retire public debt. Some of the current employees of the Forest Service would undoubtedly find employment in the private sector with the new owners of those lands.
