Dear Jaspers,

As of July 1st, there will be only one way to get your Jottings fix via email. You must join the Yahoo Group Distribute_Jasper_Jottings, The default is "individual emails". Since the only email will be the weekly Jasper Jottings distribution, this will be the choice you want. Selecting "Daily Digest" will send you the same message with some more "stuff" at the beginning and end.

If you want to receive it via email, you must accept the invitation emailed to you. (If it is "missing", drop me a line and I'll send another.) OR send an email to Distribute_Jasper_Jottings-subscribe@yahoogroups.com from that address with a little identifying information. OR browse on over to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Distribute_Jasper_Jottings and click on the blue "Join this group".

353 have registered on the Distribute site. I am sure that after this issue when I stop the marathon email struggle that we will have a rush of procrastinators. At least, I hope so or my worst fear about shifting to Distribute will have been realized. In July I plan to send invites to the 5,500 email addresses in my "mailing list". While most of that is dead wood, it will give everyone a final chance. If you are already subscribed, it will not go thru. If you don't want it, just delete it. In August, I am planning to reformat the old history into something more useful and less spamable. I am thinking about some master tables. Basically pages by name and by class, with a pointer to the last recording in Jottings. It something I've wanted to have for a long time but never had time to work on it. More projects than time. Stay tuned.

Kent boy lets hair grow 20 months for charity
By Erik Lacitis
Seattle Times staff reporter
Monday, June 21, 2004, 12:14 A.M. Pacific

===<begin quote>===

After letting his hair grow for 20 months, enduring teasing and being mistaken for a girl, Dominic Bizak, a Kent 11-year-old, several days ago got a haircut in the name of charity.

The idea to grow his hair long started when Dominic was in fourth grade. He read a news story about Locks of Love, a nonprofit Lake Worth, Fla., group founded in 1998.

The organization provides free wigs to children who, for a variety of medical reasons, have suffered hair loss. Since its beginning, the group has given out 1,400 wigs to kids under the age of 18. The wigs cost about $1,000 to put together and use 140,000 strands of hair, which is injected into skull caps. The caps fit onto the child's head with a vacuum seal so the wigs stay on even when swimming.

Susan Stone, executive director of the group, said she receives between 2,000 and 3,000 ponytails a week from donors, 80 to 90 percent of whom are females. So a donor like Dominic is valued.

"I knew I was doing a good deed and helping someone," Dominic said. But he couldn't wait to get a buzz cut — a popular style for boys these days. For the nearly two years it took to grow 12 inches of hair, Dominic put up with teasing, classmates' curiosity and adults' stinging comments.

<extraneous deleted>

Small said all of Dominic's life, "people have told him "what pretty hair he has, nice and thick, with a bit of wave. He decided someone else needed it more than he did.

"I'm very proud of him," she said.

===<end quote>===

I am continually amazed at the natural generosity of children. If I could do it, I would. But, I am not sure if I could put up with the annoyances. In the long-haired Sixties, I hated the fashion and gave up on it rather quickly. Too much hair was hot and sweaty. If I didn't shower twice a day, it looked like I had been using the greasy kid stuff. In any event, the little children shall lead is. Here's just one small way.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Wisconsin)
June 20, 2004 Sunday FINAL EDITION
SECTION: SPORTS; Pg. 02C
HEADLINE: To foul or not to foul: That is the question
BYLINE: BOB WOLFLEY of the Journal Sentinel staff

The Detroit Pistons' five-game trouncing of the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals last week took the heat off Larry Brown, whose coaching decision at the end of Game 2 inspired much debate.

The Pistons, ahead by three points with 10.9 seconds left in regulation and the Lakers in-bounding the ball, did not foul when the ball was thrown in from the side to Shaquille O'Neal, who made 42.9% of his free throws in the playoffs, 49.0% last season and 53.7% in his NBA career.

Instead, O'Neal took the ball, passed to Luke Walton, who passed to Kobe Bryant, who hit a tough three-pointer to tie the score with 2.1 seconds left. Brown declined to intentionally foul Walton or Bryant. Brown said later he told his team not to foul Bryant because he didn't want to risk a four-point play.

The Lakers went on to win the game in overtime and Brown was criticized for not fouling someone.

The reasoning there is if one of those Lakers makes both foul shots, Detroit still has a one-point lead and possession. Of course, the Lakers could decide to intentionally miss the second after a made first with hopes of getting the ball and another shot.

"Winning Hoops," a Brookfield-based basketball publication, asked coaches around the country for their opinions about the wisdom of a team with a three-point lead intentionally fouling an opponent with little time left. The results are to be published in the September-October issue.

Iowa coach Steve Alford told "Winning Hoops" he has used the strategy both ways in the same game "and got burned by both" in a double-overtime victory at Indiana.

With a 68-65 lead with 1.7 seconds left, Iowa intentionally fouled. The shooter made the first shot and intentionally missed the second, which was tipped in by Indiana freshman Patrick Ewing Jr.

With a few seconds left in the first overtime and Iowa ahead by three, Alford decided to play the Hoosiers straight up rather than foul. Bracey Wright of Indiana buried a 22-footer with a defender on top of him.

"Any intentional foul with more than 5 seconds to go can be a risky proposition. . . . especially if the opposing team has timeouts left," Alford said.

USC coach Henry Bibby said "it's a matter of pure coaching philosophy" and can be called either way. "I would have fouled Shaquille O'Neal considering the way he shoots free throws." Bibby said he would have fouled Walton, as well.

"Having one of those two guys at the foul line is a lot better option than defending Kobe one-on-one beyond the three-point arc," Bibby said.

Oregon State coach Jay John said his team lost to Washington last season when he instructed his team, which was up by three points, not to foul but play arms-up defense at the three-point arc. Nate Robinson hit a 25-footer to tie the score and Washington went on to win.

John said two days later he was watching Connecticut play Pittsburgh. UConn was up by three with a few seconds left. UConn declined to foul on the inbounds pass, but instead defended man-for-man on the perimeter. A Pitt player came free for a three-pointer and missed. UConn won.

"Jim Calhoun and UConn had used the same strategy we had, but the Pitt player missed a low-percentage shot and won the game," John said.

Manhattan College coach Bobby Gonzalez said he has discussed this issue for years with other coaches and decided on a strategy that had been "extremely successful" for him.

"When there's 5 seconds or less, I have always opted not to foul the opponent," Gonzalez said. "In that short amount of time, your players should be able to guard man-to-man, play solid defense and force the opponent to take a hurried, low-percentage shot."

Lute Olson of Arizona said on the college level "the thing that concerns us coaches is dealing with younger players who may make a mistake or make the wrong decision in that situation" so "we've tended not to give up the foul in that situation" because "a foolish mistake at that point can cost you the game."

Olson said the only time he would consider fouling is if he had a poised, veteran team that could "execute flawlessly" with 6 seconds or less.

Jim Boeheim of Syracuse dismisses the strategy.

"We never, ever intentionally foul when we're up three points, no matter what," Boeheim said. "We play defense as hard as we can and push up on their best shooter."

Boeheim said he once saw a Rick Pitino-coached Kentucky team lose to Tennessee because the Wildcats decided to intentionally foul with a three-point lead and 5 seconds left. The Volunteers made the first free throw, intentionally missed the second, got the rebound, made the put-back, got fouled and made the free throw.

"If you spoke to 100 coaches, I think you'll find that the majority of them would not intentionally foul with a three-point lead," Boeheim said. "The media always wants you to foul."

Last month the Foreign Language Association of Central New York (FLACNY) and the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT) each awarded two scholarships to senior foreign language students who ranked high on national foreign language examinations.

The local foreign language association awards two $100 scholarships to graduating seniors and the state association awards two $150 scholarships.

Both groups' awards were given based on academic achievement, length of study and the students' use of the language in extracurricular activities. FLACNY began giving out scholarships three years ago because some great students were overshadowed by extremely high-achieving students, said Joanne O'Toole, president of FLACNY and a teacher at C.W. Baker High School.

"It's nice to give more students a chance to be recognized," O'Toole said. "There were a lot (of) students who did great things, but were overshadowed."

Many Central New York students who took the Level 5 National French Exam ranked in the top 10 in Central New York and some ranked in the top 10 nationally. The examination, which contained listening and reading portions, tested grammar, vocabulary and comprehension, said Betty O'Hara, president of the American Association of French Teachers.

About 6,000 students took the Level 5 examination nationally and about 100 of them were in Central New York.

The following students won foreign language scholarships.

MICHAEL L. NIXON
Special Correspondent

GASTONIA - The Gastonia Grizzlies' 2004 Coastal Plain League season is barely a week old, but it already seems clear this is a much different squad than last year's, especially on offense.

Sure, both teams bolted out to quick 4-0 starts. But it's the nature of those wins that has Grizzlies players and fans excited.

"We just keep fighting for an entire nine innings," said outfielder Quentin Davis. "That's all Coach (Travis Little) is looking for."

So far, that's been good enough for a 4-2 record and first place in the CPL's West Division standings. Of those four wins, three have come from behind.

Gastonia trailed Thomasville by six runs in the team's season opener on Saturday, but scored seven times in the seventh inning en route to a win. The next night, the Grizzlies hung 11 runs on Spartanburg. Two games later, Gastonia overcame another six-run deficit against Thomasville, eventually winning the game on Chris Gaskin's 10th-inning walk-off home run.

How has the team done it? Gastonia leads the league in runs scored (42), runs batted in (35), stolen bases (20), and is third in on-base percentage (.368).

The top two batters in the Grizzlies lineup, outfielders Davis and Adam Godwin, have a combined 14 steals. Godwin leads the league with eight, while Davis is second with six.

"They've been exceptional getting on and running the bases," Little said. "We've got a lot of quick guys on this team. That puts a lot of pressure on the other team's defense. They know they've got to get rid of the ball in a hurry."

Little's love for speed suits Godwin just fine.

"That's my game," Godwin said. "I get on. I steal a couple of bases. The guys behind me take care of the rest."

The Grizzlies lead the league in RBIs. And more offensive weapons joined the roster this week.

Coastal Carolina pitcher Josh Fish and New Mexico State's Xardiel Cotto, Patrick Fields and Corbett Thompson reported to Gastonia Wednesday.

"Fields gives us some more good outfield speed, and Thompson will give us good defense behind the plate," said Little. "Cotto has fast hands, and should be an RBI threat."

Indeed, Cotto drove in three of Gastonia's four runs in his debut Wednesday, an 8-4 loss to Asheboro. Fields had a nice game at the plate as well, going 2-for-4.

With their late-inning heroics, the Grizzlies have shown fans at Sims Legion Park that no deficit is too large.

"The fans here have been great," said Davis. "The crowds have been growing every game."

Drafted, but ...

Gastonia lost first baseman Gaskin on Tuesday. The team's most consistent RBI threat over the past two seasons was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. But that doesn't mean the Manhattan College junior will be playing ball in the Cubs organization any time soon.Gaskin was offered the chance to sit for that night's game in Asheboro, Little said.

"But he wanted to play," Little said. "That just shows you the kind of loyalty he has to his teammates."

In the second inning, however, Gaskin suffered a left-arm injury in a collision with an Asheboro base runner and will be out for six to eight weeks.

"It was the happiest day of his life, then the worst," Little said.

Track and Field

Last weekend, qualified members of the Virginia Tech track and field team traveled to Austin, Tx., to compete in the NCAA championship track meet.

Two Hokies scored points over the course of the weekend, landing Tech a 31st place finish in the men's competition and 76th place in the women's competition.

Sophomore Spyridon Jullien finished second in the nation in the hammer throw with a distance of 231 feet, 11 inches. Jullien's throw was just three inches short of the NCAA champion, Thomas Freeman of Manhattan College.

Drexel men's basketball coach Bruiser Flint has hired Tony Chiles as an assistant coach. Chiles served in a similar capacity at Iona the last six seasons under former 76er Jeff Ruland, where he was the team's recruiting coordinator and worked with the Gaels' backcourt.

Chiles also had worked as an assistant at Manhattan College under Fran Fraschilla and briefly served as the acting head coach after Fraschilla's departure and before the arrival of John Leonard.

by Michael Levine

NEW YORK, NY, June 18, 2004 -- Knicks Assistant Coach Mike Malone had the opportunity to serve as a coach at the NBA's Pre-Draft Camp at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in early June. Malone's unique perspective will help the Knicks prepare for the June 24th Draft. NYKnicks.com talked with Mike to see how the camp went.

Q: How was the camp experience for you?

A: It was great. I really had an opportunity to interact with the players. Scouts sit up in the stands and watch, and I think it's invaluable when you get a chance to talk one-on-one in a teaching and learning atmosphere with these players. You get a chance to meet the guys and see what kind of attitude they have. All those things are really valuable insights.

Q: How did you get picked to coach?

A: The league selects based on experience. There were quite a few people who tried to get in there this year, so to be selected was an honor for me. It also helps our franchise because there's a great chance that the player we take with the 43rd pick will have played in Chicago. I will have worked with him, and I'll be able to offer some insights that we wouldn't have if I hadn't worked the camp.

Q: Did you have any role in choosing your team?

A: No, the organizers of the camp tried to make the six teams as even as possible. They assigned me to a team. Recently, they've changed it from years past. It used to be that a coach worked with the same team for the whole week, but things were getting too competitive. Some coaches were back in the hotel, having practice in their rooms. That's not the spirit of the camp. We want these kids to be able to showcase their abilities to all the teams in the NBA. So this year each coach worked with three teams.

Q: You coached at Manhattan and Luis Flores ended up on your camp team. Coincidence?

A: Yeah, it just worked out that I was able to coach him at the camp, and both Luis and I were happy about it. We have a terrific friendship we've built over the years. Obviously, I'm biased. I love Luis. I think he had a great week and really helped himself.

Q: Were there any other players you knew?

A: I recruited Delonte West very hard out of high school, and he had narrowed it down to Manhattan College and Saint Joseph's when he was deciding where to go. So I'm good friends with Delonte and his family and his high school coach. I coached at Providence College for three years and I recruited Ryan Gomes out of high school and I know his AAU coach very well. Having the relationships that I have with Luis, Delonte, and Ryan was nice because I can give them some information to help them out. It's good for them when they have someone they know and trust.

Q: Did you practice with the team at all before you went out on the court?

A: The players all flew in on Tuesday morning and we went over to the gym on Tuesday afternoon. We spent about two hours with the team, and introduced three offensive sets. All the teams ran the same offense. The first night there were no games played, but players scrimmaged and got a chance to meet their teammates and learn the sets.

Q: How did the rest of the week play out?

A: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday had pretty much the same setup. The kids came over in the morning, and three teams went through shooting drills, a one-on-one station, a two-on-two station and a scrimmage station. When they were done, the other three teams came on and did the same stuff. Each of the six teams played one game per day. All 30 NBA teams had people there watching all the drills and they look at these guys under a microscope. Do they have a good work ethic? Do they pay attention? It's easy to play hard when the game comes, but the scouts really look at the whole picture. It's a long process for the kids.

Q: Do you think your experience at the camp will allow you to give some advice during the draft?

A: At the end of each day, after the games were over, I met with our scouting staff that was out there and we talked about the team that I had just coached. We didn't necessarily talk about their basketball ability, because the scouts have seen these guys and watched their tape. Where I can help is if we're considering a player and I'm asked, "You had him in Chicago. How was he? What was your gut feeling? Was he a good kid? Good attitude? Selfish? Competitive?" Unless you're really with a guy, it's not easy to decipher all those things. I'm the only guy on our whole staff that had a chance to interact with these guys one-on-one. We ride the buses to the games with these kids and stay with them at the hotel, so it's not just on the basketball court where we get a chance to be with them. You really get to know them.

Good Morning, John:

1. Thanks for your help. I will get back to you about several things.

2. I hope you have me set up in your new system which starts 1 JUL 04. As I said in my last quoted e-mail, I am computer semi-literate. My Lady is the programmer, IBM manager, and seminar leader. Older son is a Program Manager for one of the companies employed by NASA and younger son taught computers at the Academy of Learning in Norwalk. Me, I am just your friendly neighborhood spook who is now retired and laughing at those who make nasty remarks about intelligence officers without realizing that if the PTB do not like what we say, they ignore us or replace us with "AKs" who will construct what the PTB want to hear. (The best example is that of the FBI agent who reported the 9-11 hijackers to the DC bosses, who, in the highest tradition of the "Peter Principle", ignored her work and over 3,000 died in NY and DC). (Another example is the old story about the Army General in Viet Nam who made his G-2 re-color the map of South Viet-Nam because he did not like the proportions of red and green on the map. He was afraid that SECDEF McNamara would replace him if the 'green area' wasn't larger than the 'red area') Keep up the spectacular work, John.

3. P.S. My Lady has just been diagnosed as having AMD in the other eye. A prayer or two might help. FNS sends

[JR: I am sorry to hear that she has additional medical problems. I am sure between everyone on the list we can scare up one or two. ]

Hello this is Michael Rohrssen, I am currently a student at Manhattan College and the editor-in-chief of the Quadrangle.  I was wondering if you possibly had any information on the past editors-in chief that the Quadrangle has had over the past 80 years.  Since this is the 80th year of the quadrangle I was hoping to possibly get in touch with former editors and get their opinions on their time at Manhattan College and with the quadrangle specifically.  Any information you could offer me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi Jack,

I don't see your email address registered with Distribute_Jasper_Jottings. If you want it to come automagically by email, then I need you to accept the invite sent to you by Yahoo.

I was confused by the "If it's not broke, don't fix it." The current method is broke because I was spending more time pushing the distribution out than any other phase of production.

Every weekend I was faced with a horror show of what would and would not work. Anti-spam measures have made people invisible and then they think I am not "publishing". Since "distribution" is not a core function and it was not being done "well", it made sense to outsource it to Yahoo.

I can't wait 'till 01 July and I no longer will be in the "distribution" business.

John'68

The system does not have an email address for him. I will look in some other places and see if anything comes up. I was not able to find anything on the Time Warner website but maybe if I look harder I will.

FINAL WORDS THIS WEEK

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2004/6/22/03730.shtml

Catholics, Communion And Kerry
Paul
Weyrich
Tuesday, June 22, 2004
Paul M. Weyrich is Chairman and CEO of the Free Congress Foundation.

<SNIP>

You see the TFP had just placed an ad in the Washington Times challenging the Catholic Bishops on the so-called Kerry/Communion issue. The Bishops had been meeting near Denver and that issue was one they were discussing.

The TFP had a representative at the Bishop's meeting. He reported that when Archbishop Burke of St. Louis laid out his case for denying Communion to Senator Kerry, nearly 100 Bishops applauded. That is significant because for many years the number of Bishops who would approve of a stand such as Archbishop Burke has taken could be counted on one hand.

Burke, the former Bishop of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, had already notified Catholic politicians in his diocese that if they were "pro-choice" on abortion and against the Marriage Protection Amendment, they were not eligible to receive Holy Communion in his jurisdiction. He waited about five minutes after being transferred to St. Louis to articulate the same view. That was because Senator Kerry was headed for St. Louis and some reporters wanted to know what his policy on that situation would be.

(Archbishop Burke, by the way, says he is doing what he is doing out of charity for the souls of these politicians, who are endangering eternal life by what they are doing).

Anyway, back to Noell, he said to me that the issue of Kerry and Communion was now out there and it would very probably cause Catholics to vote for President Bush.

I disagreed without, as we say in Washington, being disagreeable. I am willing to bet that not one Catholic in 10 heard about this issue. Secondly, as the pollster John Zogby has suggested, not many Catholics vote as Catholics anymore. Also, the sex scandals have greatly diminished the credibility of the Bishops. Were this the 1950s, it would be an entirely different matter.

Adlai Stevenson lost the Catholic vote to General Dwight Eisenhower in 1952, the first Democrat to do so in decades, primarily because he was divorced. Stevenson was not a Catholic and had no reason to follow Catholic teachings on the subject. Nevertheless, Catholics felt so strongly about the views of their own Church that they were willing to vote for a Republican.

Furthermore, that was without Catholic Bishops as a whole taking a position on the matter. Nonetheless, powerful voices in the Church at the time, such as Cardinal Spellman of New York, made it known how they felt on the subject. Back then that was enough.

Today, even if the Catholic Bishops were to adopt a position that said you could not openly flaunt the Church's doctrinal position on issues and still receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion, two-thirds of Catholics would ignore the views of the Bishops. The Bishops will not take this step.

These days powerful voices such as Cardinal McCarrick of Washington claim to be "uncomfortable" denying Communion to someone such as Senator Kerry. No doubt that position will prevail. It is the easy way out. It permits every Bishop speak for his own diocese and the matter is unlikely to become a significant issue in the campaign. No doubt Kerry will follow the advice of his campaign staff, who are advising him to "lie low" when it comes to religion.

<extraneous deleted>

I do not think that the Kerry/Communion issue will sway the Catholic vote. There simply are not enough Catholics who have heard about it ... unless Kerry himself makes it an issue. Why he would do so would be beyond my comprehension.

In political marketing we have what is known as the principle of the seventh mentioning. That simply means that the voter has to hear about an issue seven times before he is even aware that it is an issue. It is hard for me to figure any way that average Catholics will hear about this issue seven times between now and the election. It could happen perhaps in the dozen or so dioceses where Bishops have spoken clearly on the issue. The seventh mentioning could also occur in markets where the media tend to repeat things over and over as new developments occur. That, however, is true mostly in the smaller dioceses, the notable exception being St. Louis.

I recall a forum held at Catholic University by the late Brent Bozell Sr. to discuss action at the time. It was 1968 and the late Patrick Cardinal O'Boyle of Washington, D.C., had suspended a whole raft of priests who were dissenters concerning Pope Paul VI's encyclical on artificial birth control known as Humane Vitae. I got Bozell's attention when I said, "Unless the Cardinal is supported, we will soon have a situation where a Catholic is simply a person who calls himself a Catholic."

That, unfortunately, came to pass long ago. Now it seems you can believe whatever you wish and still be a Catholic ... although "Cafeteria Catholic" would be perhaps more accurate.

In the case of Kerry, it seems one can speak to groups that openly promote abortion, pledging one's undying support. That is far more than just casting a vote on partial-birth abortion, parental notification or federal funding. There are priests in every diocese, even in those like Archbishop Burke's, who will gladly give Senator Kerry Communion. Usually these are order priests, out of the reach of the local Bishop. They report to their own Bishops, often overseas.

That is what happened on Easter Sunday, as both Senator and Mrs. Kerry went to a church run by a religious order where the priest was pleased to serve them Holy Communion. This occurred right after the new Archbishop of Boston, Sean O'Malley, told politicians who disagreed on abortion and marriage not to even present themselves for that Sacrament. Kerry and Tereza could not have cared less what the Archbishop said.

<SNIP>

Sad to say, I think he is correct that there is no American "catholic" anything anymore. A shell of its former self. Rotten away from the outside by the religion of secular humanism as taught in the "publik schools in the various people republics" (e.g., People's Republic of Massachusetts; New York; California). And, rotten away from the inside by pedophile priests, a religious hierarchy that made the payoffs, and the complete an utter lack of moral leadership. The fate of the country is in the "home schoolers", the fly-over religious communities, the "gun nuts" (who are maligned for defending the RKBA as fundamental to the First Amendment and necessary for a safe society), and those that remember how it should be. God help us.

And that’s the last word.
