BTW, I suggest that EVERYONE use an email not related to their employment for "personal" email. As a Info Sec pro, I know that employers regularly read employees email and a legally allowed to do so. There are all sorts of free web-based email sites where you can have a free account that you can have some assurance of privacy. Like Yahoo, http://www.fepg.net/webbased.html  has a list. Word to the wise!

Pilot survives 24 hours in subfreezing weather

(CNN) --A pilot survived 24 hours in temperatures that hovered near zero after his small plane splashed into an Alaska lake during an unsuccessful takeoff from a remote airstrip over the weekend.

Wade Strahan, 56, was rescued Saturday after spending a subfreezing night in an unheated trapper's cabin and then hiking eight miles where he was found by a cross-country skier, said Maj. Mike Haller of the Alaska National Guard.

According to Haller, the skier was able to text-message rescue crews, who came for Strahan and took him to a hospital.

== <end quote> ===

What’s remarkable about this? Unprepared pilot with 30 years experience. Sjier with a text messaging phone. Both are pretty interesting. How prepared am I. Facing a survival situation. Will I even recognize them when they come. I am not thinking of the physical challenges, but the moral ones. Hope we all do well on those.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Saturday, January 10th, 2004 - LINDGREN, THOMAS HERBERT - Thomas Herbert Lindgren, of Irvington, New York, died January 9, 2004 at Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne. He was 73. Tom was born on August 9, 1930 in New York City to the late Richard and Ida (Thal) Lindgren. He was raised in Yonkers and attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. It was at Hayes that he found his great love of track. Under legendary track coach Howie Borck, Tom excelled and had a record which included his never losing a half mile race his senior year. In 1948, he became the first high schooler to break the 2 minutes indoor for the half mile. His track career at Hayes was highlighted by his winning a Championship of America Two Mile Relay Race at the Penn Relays in 1948. He graduated from Hayes in 1948 and attended Georgetown University for one year before enrolling in his beloved Manhattan College. His career at Manhattan was interrupted in the fall of 1951 when he joined the Marine Corps for two years. With the Marines, he was stationed in Quantico, Virginia and ran for the Marines Track Team. Upon his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he married Patricia Collins on July 23, 1953 at St. John the Baptist in Yonkers. His wife predeceased him on December 19, 1992. Returning to Manhattan, Tom was a member of the Cross Country and Track teams under Hall of Fame Coach George Eastman during the Glory Days of Manhattan Track and Field. He was a member of the 1954 team that swept all three IC4A Championships, a feat that has never been matched. He was the Captain of the 1955 team and anchored the Two Mile Relay Team which clinched the Championship on February 27, 1955, only after driving his wife Pat to the hospital between heats, where his wife delivered their first child, Patrice Ann. Upon graduation, he worked briefly at Brewster High School before joining the Ardsley School System for a thirty year career. He began his career as a Physical Education Teacher and later became Athletic Director and the Director of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Continuing Education. While at Ardsley, he served as the Chairman of Section One Basketball. He retired from Ardsley in 1985 and worked for several years for George E. Miller, Physical Therapy. After his retirement, he spent his time with his passions of golf, gardening, and watching his grandchildren in their sporting events. In 1997, he was inducted into the Manhattan College Sports Hall of Fame. During his lifetime, he was active in the Catholic Church, first at St. John the Baptist in Yonkers, at Holy Rosary in Hawthorne, and later at Immaculate Conception in Irvington. He is survived by four children Patrice Riggin (Lyle), Thomas (Maureen), Michael (Bernadette), and Janet Murray (Packy), together with his brothers Don and Bob. His brother Dick predeceased him in 2001. He is survived by his twelve grandchildren: Chris, Matthew, Shannon, P.J., Timmy, Katherine, Brian, Michael, Kevin, Erik, Brendan and Patricia, together with countless classmates, colleagues and friends. Visiting Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home Sunday, January 11th and Monday, January 12th from 2-5 and 7-9 PM. The Funeral Mass celebrating his life will take place at Immaculate Conception Church, 16 North Broadway, Irvington, New York on Tuesday, January 13th at 10 AM. Burial will be at Kensico Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Rosary Hill Home, 600 Linda Avenue, Hawthorne, New York 10532, or the Junius Kellogg Scholarship Fund, Manhattan College, Riverdale, New York 10471. Dear John,

I know that John Nason '52 sent you the Obituary for Tom Lindgren '55.  I would like to offer a follow up. The Wake was well attended at all sessions and there was no doubt that Tom was a proud Jasper. The room was filled with pictures and memorabilia from Tom's great track career, (as well as of his family) starting at Cardinal Hayes continuing while in The Marines and on to Manhattan. His Hall of Fame Trophy was on display along with the many Medals he had earned.

At the Mass, Father John Cullinane, '52  was the principal celebrant, Father John Blanco '53 con-celebrated as did two former of his former Pastors. Tom's grandson's were pall bearers, each wearing a green carnation. Father John's Homily was outstanding, one of the best I have heard in a very long time. Ralph Nobile, Esq. '52 delivered a Eulogy and Tom Jr. spoke and read an excerpt from Tom's speech when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame (which was printed in full on the back of the Mass booklet), and then read the essay that accompanied one of Tom's grandson's application to Manhattan. It was a recitation of why the young man wanted to attend Manhattan, and the reason was what his grandfather  had done to help him develop as a person and as a runner.  He wanted to be like his grandfather, and his grandfather went to Manhattan! There was not a dry eye in the Church.

At the Cemetery a Marine Honor Guard provided the traditional rifle salute, Taps and the flag ceremony. All in all, a very inspiring send off for a great Jasper.

Tom will be missed by many, but most particularly by the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. Tom was the one member who always went a little further to make sure that a candidates credentials were fairly and completely presented. May he Rest in Peace.

                      Mike McEneney, Esq. '53 BBA

[JR: He obviously touched a lot of people. Who will step up, follow the example,  and make the impact? When I read about all the great Jaspers, when they pass away, it always strikes me that we need to replace the "linemen". Who's the "young" Jasper – boy or girl – who will take up the yoke and be the "power replacement" that draws us together, inspires us, and makes us proud of the Jasper heritage? Volunteers? The journey begins with a single step – or phone call, or email, or note. ]

[JR: On an editorial note, I don't think that three reports are at all duplicative. I more fear that we may miss one. SO if you spot something, please please send it in. I don't mind handling extras at all. At least I know we have nailed it. Everyone sees things differently and we all benefit from different views. ]

Dear John,

The Journal News on Sunday January 11th, 2004 at page 5B, had an obitutary for Dante B. Tedaldi, '54 who died on January 7th.

If you do not have it, I have a copy.

                        Best,

                            Mike McEneney, Esq. '53 BBA

TEDALDI, DANTE B. - Dante B. Tedaldi, a longtime resident of New Rochelle, died on January 7, 2004. He was 71. Mr. Tedaldi was born in New York City to the late Dante J. and Elvira Belloni Tedaldi. He graduated with honors from Manhatten College in 1954 with a Civil Engineering degree. Mr. Tedaldi owned the general contracting firm of Teaco Construction Corp. and the Crestwood Stone Supply Co., both located in NYC with his brother Robert, for over 40 years. Mr. Tedaldi's firm was highly regarded for its specialty services for monumental stone construction and restoration, and they completed many landmark projects throughout the New York Metro Area. Notable achievements included the Grand Entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at Battery Park, the main barracks along the parade ground at West Point Military Academy, and the restoration of Grant's Tomb and the plaza and base of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, in addition to many others. He was an extraordinarily gifted singer, and as a solo operatic tenor he performed at recitals, weddings, and special events throughout the area. Deeply spiritual, he was a communicant of the Holy Name of Jesus Church where he sang in the choir. He also sang at St. Gabriel's Church and many churches in the Bronx. He was the beloved husband, of 39 years, to his deceased wife Amelia who died in 1999. He was a devoted, loving spouse and an active parent who was known for his humor, which he shared often with his family. He is survived by a daughter Patricia and her husband Erik Erikson and a granddaughter Emily Erikson; a son Dante J. and his fiancee Mary Louise Muldoon; a sister Jane and her husband Allen Hale of Athens, NY; a brother Eugene and his wife Anne-Marie of South Salem, NY; a sister-in-law Dorothea Tedaldi, and a large and loving extended family including a dear friend Ann Spinelli. He was predeceased by his brother Robert in November of 2003. Dante looked forward to seeing the sunshine of his life, granddaughter Emily, every week. He was thrilled with his son's recent engagements and eagerly welcomed the new couple into his busy life. Our sorrow is deep, but our love is everlasting. As with our beautiful mother who cherished us without limits each day of her life, our father Dante will remain in our thoughts and prayers forever. We will miss him dearly. He will be cremated and laid to rest with his beloved wife Amelia in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Service of Westchester County. Visitation will be Friday 2-4 and 7-9 at LLOYD MAXCY & SONS BEAUCHAMP CHAPEL, 16 Shea Place, New Rochelle. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 am at Holy Name Church.

Lee out 3 weeks

C.J. Lee, Pittsford Sutherland’s All-Greater Rochester basketball point guard, was told by doctors Wednesday that he will be sidelined for three weeks.

Lee suffered a bone bruise and a grade-one sprain of his right knee during a home game at Batavia on Jan. 8. He is somewhat upbeat about the news despite having to miss a portion of his senior season.

“Putting it into perspective, it could’ve been a lot worse,’’ said Lee, who has accepted a scholarship from Manhattan College. “Nothing was torn, no cartilage is damaged.

“I’ve played a lot of sports, and this by far is the worst injury I’ve had. I’ve been very blessed.”

The Peacocks (8-6, 4-1 MAAC) cut the deficit to 13, 38-25, with 3:17 to play before halftime, but Benton connected on three free throws over the next minute as Manhattan carried a 41-25 lead in the break.

NEW YORK -- The women's basketball team from Manhattan College defeated visiting Marist, 56-42, in Friday night's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.

Marist's Nina Vecchio scored 12 points -- she was 4-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc -- and handed out three assists, including the 500th of her career.

Stephanie Del Preore gave Marist 11 points and nine rebounds. The senior now has 898 career points.

Marist's 42 points was the team's lowest point total of the season. The loss was the Red Foxes' first in conference competition.

"It was just a disappointing effort, especially on the offensive end," said Brian Giorgis, Marist's head coach. His team is now 6-6 overall and 2-1 in MAAC play. "We need some people to step up. We need our senior leadership to really assert itself."

The Red Foxes turned the ball over 19 times.

"They seemed to be at critical times when you were trying to make runs," Giorgis said of the turnovers.

Marist is 4-1 this season in games following a loss. The Red Foxes next host MAAC rival Rider on Sunday.

Copyright 2004 The Buffalo News
Buffalo News (New York)
January 7, 2004 Wednesday, FINAL EDITION
SECTION: SPORTS, Pg.D3
HEADLINE: CANISIUS IS FIRST STOP FOR MANHATTAN/
BYLINE: MIKE HARRINGTON; News Sports Reporter

When he was talking to a New York Post reporter last week, Manhattan College coach Bobby Gonzalez said that sleeping and eating are overrated during the season.

He was only half joking. Gonzalez's frenetic pace has helped make the Jaspers the class of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and the talk of New York City basketball the last two years. But the 1986 Buffalo State graduate never had any luck in his college hometown until sweeping Niagara and Canisius here last season.

Gonzalez's team is back in town this week, once again looking to establish it's going to be the top dog in the MAAC race.

The Jaspers will be in the Koessler Center to meet Canisius tonight (7, Radio 710 AM). Then they play Niagara Friday night in the Gallagher Center for the first time since their 82-81 double-overtime win over the Purple Eagles in last year's MAAC Tournament in Trenton, N.J.

The Jaspers are 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC but Gonzalez is still trying to mesh his unit together to play with the same kind of dominance last year's team had. Manhattan went to the NCAA Tournament last year for the first time since 1995, losing to Syracuse in the first round.

"This team needs more time together, more games," Gonzalez, a master of speed speech, said Tuesday by phone from New York. "We're not where I want to be and where I think we're gonna be. You need to have your ducks in a row when you come to Buffalo to win one game. You have to have your act together. It was a great thing for our program to come up there and sweep last year. It certainly was a major accomplishment for our team."

Manhattan had lost 13 straight in Buffalo and Gonzalez was 0-7 here until it beat Niagara, 71-65, and wiped out a 13-point halftime deficit to tip Canisius, 75-72.

Senior guard Luis Flores, the returning MAAC player of the year and a Wooden Award nominee, leads the Jaspers in scoring at 21.5 points. He scored 35 last year at Canisius, including 26 in the second half. Senior forward David Holmes averages 13.5 points and 8.7 rebounds. Other than that, the offense has been thin as evidenced by a 40.4 shooting percentage and no one else averaging more than eight points.

Defense, however, has been a Manhattan forte. The Jaspers are holding foes to 60.4 points and 43.6 percent shooting.

"I like this team," Gonzalez said. "We've got great chemistry. Our offense has to improve because we've been really able to guard and defend. I like our toughness and the fact we have great will to win. We have the attributes our teams have had. What we're missing is a little bit of mature game experience and we're going to get that."

Gonzalez is 76-49 in five years at Manhattan and carries an ever-growing profile nationally. His name is already flying around the New York and national media as a possible replacement at St. John's for next season.

Gonzalez has been rumored for jobs in the past, with DePaul being the prime target two years ago and Pittsburgh last year. But the rumor mill has really been rolling since St. John's fired Mike Jarvis last month.

"I've never seen anything like this because I'm here in New York," he said. "We beat St. John's the last two years. We're 10-2 in my time in the (Madison Square) Garden and all that has added to what people write. It's been unbelieveable."

"I'm just trying to focus on my kids on this team. We're working on getting better and becoming a good Manhattan team."

Canisius (4-8, 0-2) has lost five straight and is coming off Saturday's 87-63 loss at St. Peter's. The Griffs allowed the Peacocks to shoot 80 percent from the field in the first half, equaling the best showing ever by a Canisius opponent, and the 63.6 percent for the game was the highest for a Griffs foe since Duke hit 69.5 percent in a 110-62 rout of Canisius in 1992.

Senior centers Yaku Moton-Spruill (back spasms) and Jon Ferris (foot inflammation) did not play in that game and Moton-Spruill isn't expected back until next week. Ferris may play tonight.

"It's a tough trip no matter what way we shake it out," Gonzalez said. "Canisius has lost five in a row but they're at home and they know a win over us can help turn things around, pump them up and put them right back in the mix."/ / In tonight's other Big 4 action:

The University at Buffalo (5-5, 1-1) plays its first home game since Dec. 17 when it hosts Miami of Ohio (4-5, 0-1) in a Mid-American Conference contest in Alumni Arena (8, Radio 1520 AM). The Bulls are just 1-9 against the RedHawks and have dropped five straight in the series, including last year's 63-35 home disaster. The UB women (1-7) play their conference opener against Miami (6-5) at 6 p.m.

St. Bonaventure (4-7) tries to snap a three-game skid when it meets defending Atlantic 10 champion Dayton (10-3) in the teams' conference opener at UD Arena (7:30, Radio 1300 AM & 95.7 FM). Bona did not meet Dayton last year as the teams' regular season finale in the Reilly Center was canceled by the player walkout that prematurely ended the Bonnies' season./ e-mail: mharrington@buffnews.com

One unusual step you might take, if you are still looking, follows.

If you are told that the position you were interested has been filled, ask for the new employee's last place of business. That company might just be looking for someone with your background.

Good luck!

And keep up the good work with the newsletter. I'm certain it is a lot of work and I'm glad someone has taken it on. I find something of personal interest in almost every issue.

And keep the Libertarian viewpoint in there.

Bob

[JR: My experience is that many many "reqs" are not real. Toe dipping in the water, "Can I find someone to do a job for peanuts and maybe nuke a highly paid person?", "networking by pretending to hire (asking a lot about the past employer and taking names and titles), and my personal favorite – free consulting – here's a our network how would we (simplify, condense, redesign, roll out AD exchange xp etc. etc.). When I hear the words "how would you rollout a 120k seat ad, exchange, xp and what traps would you look for?", I know the interviewer's motives. I appreciate that you find something interesting in each issue. It makes me think that the time is well spent. ]

I find it appalling that Manhattan is "honoring" Computer Associates, a company fraught with misdeeds and under continuing investigation by the SEC, with a retired chairman and current CEO who looted the company with exorbitant pay packages while screwing their shareholders.

[JR: You bring up a good point! Just the other day, I heard that there was some new enforcement action by the sec announced. Makes you wonder. ]

Dear “collector-in-chief”,

Hi. My name is Kevin Moore and I graduated from Manhattan College in 1980 with a degree in English literature.  I greatly enjoy your newsletter “jasper jottings” and would like to extend an invitation to any jaspers on your list (especially those who live in Brooklyn or Queens)  to come and pray with “the helpers of god’s precious infants”.

The helpers of god’s precious infants is a pro-life group founded by Msgr. Philip Reilly based primarily in Brooklyn and Queens, but with branches through the united states and indeed the entire World.   The helper’s pray and counsel in front of abortion clinics hoping to dissuade people from making a tragic mistake.  I myself have been praying in front of choices in long island city for the past three years and have witnessed numerous “turnarounds”.  The helper’s do not stop with counseling and literature, once a month a baby shower is given for the women who decide to keep their children, and job referrals and training are available.

I would appreciate you posting this in your newsletter and i can be reached at <privacy invoked>  c/o jottings on the internet.  Continued success with your newsletter and god bless you and yours

Sincerely Yours.

Dear Friend and Business Colleague:

Best wishes for good health and happiness in 2004.

Mayor Bloomberg has accepted our invitation to deliver the keynote address at the Audubon Partnership's Community and Business Summit Breakfast to be held on Thursday, February 26 at 8 am.

Attached is the Save the Date card which contains additional information.  Please note this date on your calendar.  We also ask that you forward it, with a personal note, to your network and associates.

The event and awards aim to recognize our community's diversity, address policy issues, business success and mark our community's celebrations in February, such as Dominican American Heritage and Black History Month.

The coordinating committee has chosen Julio Belber, CEO of Center Care Health Plan and native of Washington Heights, for an award. Other candidates are under consideration and we would welcome any suggestions for nominees.

No decision has been made on the location yet, but it will either be held at the Malcolm X Memorial (Audubon Building on W. 165 St.) or Melodía Restaurant, a new spacious location just down the block from us on Post Avenue and 10th Ave.  We expect to accommodate about 200-250 at either site.

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

I look forward to hearing from you. Please verify your mailing address so that the invitation is sent to you.

PRIVACY

Operating Jasper Jottings, the "collector-in-chief", aka CIC, recognizes that every one of us needs privacy. In respect of your privacy, I will protect any information you provide to the best of my ability. No one needs "unsolicited commercial email" aka spam.

The CIC of Jasper Jottings will never sell personal data to outside vendors. Nor do we currently accept advertisements, although that may be a future option.

DISCLAIMER

This effort has NO FORMAL RELATION to Manhattan College!

This is just my idea and has neither support nor any official relationship with Manhattan College. As alumni, we have a special bond with Manhattan College. In order to help the College keep its records as up to date as possible, the CIC will share such information as the Alumni office wants. To date, we share the news, any "new registrations" (i.e., data that differs from the alumni directory), and anything we find about "lost" jaspers.

QUALIFICATION

You may only subscribe to the list, only if you have demonstrated a connection to Manhattan College. This may require providing information about yourself to assert the claim to a connection. Decisions of the CIC are final. If you do provide such personal information, such as email, name, address or telephone numbers, we will not disclose it to anyone except as described here.

CONNECTING

Should you wish to connect to someone else on the list, you must send in an email to the list requesting the connection. We will respond to you, so you know we received your request, and send a BCC (i.e., Blind Carbon Copy) of our response to your target with your email address visible. Thus by requesting the connection, you are allowing us to share your email address with another list member. After that it is up to the other to respond to you. Bear in mind that anything coming to the list or to me via my reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu address is assumed to be for publication to the list and you agree to its use as described.

Should some one wish to connect with you, you will be sent a BCC (i.e., Blind Carbon Copy) of our response as described above. It is then your decision about responding.

We want you to be pleased not only with this service. Your satisfaction, and continued participation, is very important to all of us.

REQUESTING YOUR PARTICIPATION

Please remember this effort depends upon you being a reporter. Email any news about Jaspers, including yourself --- (It is ok to toot your own horn. If you don't, who will? If it sounds too bad, I'll tone it down.) --- to reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu. Please mark if you DON'T want it distributed AND / OR if you DON'T want me to edit it.

I keep two of the “Instant Messengers” up: Yahoo "reinkefj"; and MSN T7328215850.

Or, you can USMail it to me at 3 Tyne Court Kendall Park, NJ 08824.

INVITING ANY JASPERS

Feel free to invite other Jaspers to join us by dropping me an email.

FINAL WORDS THIS WEEK

U.S. Treasury Department Betrays Citizens' Privacy

In March 2003, the U.S. Treasury Department asked the general public for email comments about a proposal to regulate the taxes on some types of malt liquor.

The Treasury Department said that the comments would be posted on the Web, to stimulate informed public debate. The Department assured everyone their privacy would be absolutely protected:

"All comments posted on our Web site will show the name of the commenter, but will not show street addresses, telephone numbers, or e-mail addresses," the Department promised.

However, the proposal drew far more comments than expected. By October nearly 10,000 email statements had been received. Several thousand others arrived by fax or mail.

That's a lot of emails to edit. So rather than go to the trouble of keeping a solemn promise to Americans commenting on a sensitive government matter, the Treasury Department decided to simply post the comments on the Web in their entirety -- including all personal data.

"The unusually large number of comments received...has made it difficult to remove all street addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses from the comments for posting on our Internet Web site in a timely manner," the Treasury Department announced in a notice published in the Federal Register on December 2, page 67388.

"Therefore, to ensure that the public has Internet access to the thousands of comments received...at the earliest practicable time, we will post comments...on our Web site in full, including any street addresses, telephone numbers, or email addresses contained in the comments."

Yes, they will put almost 10,000 email addresses, along with other personal information, on the Web. In announcing this betrayal of the public trust, the Treasury Department did offer to remove personal information -- if those commentators contacted them within three weeks of that notice. (Of course, everyone reads the Federal Register page-by-page, right?) That deadline expired December 23.

Jim Harper of the Privacilla privacy Web site, put it nicely:

"Treasury's privacy promise included an important unwritten caveat: 'Unless keeping this promise is inconvenient.'...Now, [citizens who commented] may get phone calls, letters, or spam. Merchants who commented may be picketed or boycotted. It's precisely when an issue is controversial that privacy promises are most important."

This action could also have a powerful chilling effect on citizen participation in government. After this, how many of these 10,000-plus citizens are going to risk speaking out on another controversial issue? If the government wanted to deliberately stifle public input on its decision-making, it could hardly pick a better way.

Once again, a powerful government agency betrays the public trust, invades privacy, and exposes people to expense, inconvenience, and risk. Concerned citizens who trusted the agency are abused and treated like suckers. Just business as usual in Washington.

The government is our friend. It will protect us. Yeah right. "Public trust" is like "jumbo shrimp".

And that’s the last word.
