Shoeshine man donates $89,000 in tips to hospital

Pittsburgh’s ‘Children’s’ received gift over 23 years

== <begin quote> ===

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 24   Just as he’s done for more than two decades, Albert Lexie gets out of bed at 5 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, takes two buses to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and makes his rounds — offering shoe shines for $3.

ALSO EVERY TUESDAY, Lexie goes to an office building about three blocks from the hospital and hands over his weekly donation — shoeshine tips, gifts from customers and contributions — to the hospital’s Free Care Fund.

Lexie’s efforts make about $10,000 every year, and he’s donated more than $89,000 since February 1981 to the fund, which helps pay for medical care to pediatric patients regardless of their families’ ability to pay.

== <end quote> ===

Here's another lesson in quiet charity. It's truly amazing what some people can accomplish. Will anyone say the same about us? What a legacy. Hopefully God will judge our contributions generously.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

HEADLINE: 4 local small businesses recognized
BYLINE: R. PATRICK CORBETT

UTICA -- Four area entrepreneurs were saluted Wednesday by the U.S. Small Business Administration, SCORE, M&T Bank, Small Business Development Center and the Women's Business Center.

The recipients of the Small Businesses of the Year awards are Angelo Rosato, owner of Angelo Rosato Physical Therapy of New Hartford; Robert Swigonski of Swigonski Management Group of Sherrill; Gina LaBella, owner of Distinctive Gifts by Gina of Utica, and Brian Bluff, owner of TOC Inc. of Clinton.

David Mallen, director of the Small Business Development Center at SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome, said all four have worked with one or more of the organizations that sponsor the recognition program.

He said the small business center helps many start-up businesses put together a business plan and we like to recognize them when they are successful.

Swigonski said he turned to the small business center for help 10 years ago and used its guidance to attract partners and build a minor empire made up of five Denny's restaurants with one set of partners, and three Bennigan's restaurants with another partnership.

There's 650 jobs he's created, Mallen said, and $3.5 million in investments and a $5.5 million payroll.

Swigonski said he used to walk by the Small Business Development Center's office at SUNYIT, and one day he walked in and told them his dream of opening a restaurant.

They helped me do a business plan, Swigonski said. They do a great job.

He said Eugene Yelle, a business adviser at the small business center, has been at his side as he developed his partnerships and his business plans.

I attribute a lot of my success to their help, Swigonski said.

Winners of the 2003 Small Businesses of the Year award:

E Angelo Rosato Physical Therapy, New Hartford. The business opened at 600 French Road in 2002. It offers outpatient services for the general orthopedic patients, injured worker and athlete. Rosato has been a licensed physical therapist for more than 20 years.

ESwigonski Management Group, Sherrill. The business operates five Denny's restaurants and three Bennigan's restaurants through several partnerships. Robert Swigonski graduated from Manhattan College and served four years in the Air Force.

E Distinctive Gifts by Gina, Utica. Gina LaBella was the first recipient of the Small Business Center $500 Trickle Up Grant, which she used to design and produce brochures to market her products. The home-based business offers gift baskets, balloon-a-grams and party and wedding decorations and planning.

E TCO Inc. of Clinton. Brian Bluff started TCO as an independent company representing the Thomas Register of North American Manufacturers, a 107-year-old business directory known as the big green book. In 2003, TCO ranked in the top 10 percent of new business in the U.S.

Maureen Langan, Peter McDermott

Maureen Langan, a comedian, and Peter James McDermott, a civil engineer, are to be married today in Parsippany, N.J. The Rev. Bernard Smith is to perform the ceremony at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church.

Ms. Langan, 41, is keeping her name. She has appeared at New York clubs, including the Comic Strip Live, the New York Comedy Club and Caroline's. From 1991 to 1998 she was the host of "Lifestyles," a series including celebrity interviews and satirical commentaries on world news on WBBR-AM and on Bloomberg Television. She graduated from Montclair State College in New Jersey. She is a daughter of Ann and Hugh Langan of Lake Hiawatha, N.J.

Mr. McDermott, 44, works on bridge and highway reconstruction projects at Berger, Lehman Associates, consulting engineers and transportation planners in Rye, N.Y. He graduated from Manhattan College. He is a son of Jeanne Tyler McDermott of Surfside Beach, S.C., and the late Bernard I. McDermott.

"How did we meet?" Ms. Langan said with a laugh. "He stalked me at the Jersey Shore."

It was in 1996, she said, and they were in summer share houses, he in Spring Lake and she in Sea Girt, the next town.

"I was near the beach," said Ms. Langan, who was training for the New York City Marathon at the time. "So he would come by on his bike on Saturdays, and just happen to stop by while I was writing, or when I was getting ready to go out for a run. Like, there was this one day when he just stopped by and said, 'Hey, do you have any lemonade?' I said, 'Lemonade? How old are you?' I felt like we were on 'Leave It to Beaver.' "

She added, "We did go out on one date early in the summer. But I was just into doing my thing alone at that point."

After that, she said, she began fending off his dating requests. One day in late August, "I was riding my motorcycle, and I saw him coming out of his house," she said. "I stopped and asked how he was doing. He said, 'Maureen, I can't talk to you. I'm busy cultivating new friendships.' "

"I liked that," Ms. Langan said. "He really grew on me. He's plainspoken and honest."

As the summer wound down, she said: "I began to realize that I probably wouldn't ever see him again. So I asked if he wanted to catch dinner or something. He said, 'Is this a date?' And I said no. He said, 'You can call it whatever you want, Maureen, but I'm calling it a date.' "

The relationship developed when they returned to New York after the summer.

"I remember after one of our dates he sent me flowers at work," Ms. Langan said. "Gorgeous red roses. Then he calls me up and says, 'Did you get flowers? Did you like them? Ninety bucks!' I thought that was really tacky, but endearing."

HEADLINE: Reina nets 100th goal in win over Spartans

UTICA-- The Notre Dame girls soccer team's win Thursday over Tri Valley League rival New Hartford was extra special for Jugglers junior forward Chrissy Reina.

Reina scored the game's first two goals to bring her career total to 100 and also assisted on the game-winning goal in Notre Dame's 4-3 victory over the Spartans.

I was so excited, said Reina, whose ability to score carries on a family tradition established by older sisters, Dominica and Trinity. We've been playing so good. The last two games we played two undefeated teams and I'm so glad we won. Everything was good tonight.

After Reina's two first-half goals, New Hartford (5-1-1, 6-1-1) tied the game with goals by Katie Peck and Emma Deis. Amanda Leslie put Notre Dame back up with a goal off a corner kick, before Peck tied it at 3 on a penalty kick.

Meaghan Bryant scored the game winner for Notre Dame Thursday with one minute to play on a direct kick taken by Reina.

Reina scored three goals Sunday as the Jugglers (6-2 TVL, 10-2 overall) defeated previously unbeaten Sauquoit Valley 3-2, in the championship of the 11th Annual Lady Jugglers Classic.

Reina now has 32 goals for the year.

She's relentless to the goal and she has terrific moves, said Notre Dame Tom Bronk, who has coached all of the Reina sisters. She's a finisher.

Dominica Reina, now a junior forward at St. John's University, who totaled 134 goals in her high school career at Frankfort-Schuyler and Notre Dame, also scored her 100th career goal against New Hartford. Trinity Reina scored 83 goals in her four-year career with the Jugglers. She is now a freshman at Manhattan College and is redshirting this year because of a broken ankle she sustained during the Empire State Games.

Bush is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He leadeth me beside the still factories,
He maketh me to lie down on park benches,
He restoreth my doubts about the Republicans,
He guideth me onto the paths of unemployment for the party's sake.
I do fear the evildoers, for he talkest about them constantly.
Thy tax cuts for the rich and thy deficit spending
They do comfort me.
Thou anointest me with never-ending debt,
And my savings and assets shall soon be gone.
Surely poverty and hard living shall follow me,
And my children shall dwell in my basement forever.

When you published Kathleen Nelan's obit in this weeks Jottings, you stated, "I am not sure what the connection is, or even if it is the right MC. But, we have enough prayers to go around!"

We certainly do have enough prayers to go around, but I can tell you it definitely is the right MC.  Her son Fr. Kevin Nelan is a graduate of the college, class of 73.  And she would have been related by marriage to Kevin's uncle, Br. Augustine Philip Nelan FSC, former president of Manhattan.

Good Morning, One and All:

1. Forgive the bad Latin but I have 3 holes in my stomach from whence the same Mash-trained surgeon who operated so successfully upon my Lady removed my gall bladder last Friday...out patient surgery...took about 4 hours from start to finish...Larry came up from DC (Jay had to wrestle with the contractors) and Helen and Larry stayed with me until I made it home.

2. The tape itches, the head is woozy, the eyes are watery, the stomach hurts to change position, the whole nine yards, or as some of us say, SS, DD. Apparently, I have been having these attacks and damaging the area for some time but this past month is the first time that I have ever had any pain in the boiler. One can have pains all around the body, which does not help one to become aware of the real problem. According to what the Surgeon told Larry, there was much scarring on the Bladder itself, which must be explained to me when I am lucid again. The liver had to be "burned" to seal off the place or places where they were attached, etc.

3. I have been forbidden to do any lifting for at least 2 weeks (which wipes out OG Trains) and after a complete exam by the Surgeon, I will be told what lifting I may do. Windsor Locks, RAATS, OD Trains and Annapolis could become history for the rest of this year..

4. I have no more rocks anywhere that we know of and I may have lost my gall...but don't bet the farm on that. I hope this goes to all I have listed but I do not trust these new fangled machines.

FNS sends (sleepily)

[JR: Glad to read that you came out the other side ready to debate the French Archers with John Fay. We need to hear more about the new and improved gall-less Helm. Besides I can't afford to lose any readers; there too hard to come by. ]

FINAL WORDS THIS WEEK

Joseph Sobran’s
Washington Watch
Schumer and the Catholics
(Reprinted from the issue of August 21, 2003)

=== <begin quote> ===

Sen. Charles Schumer, the other New York Democrat, is at the center of a new controversy. Mike Long, of New York’s Conservative Party, says Schumer “has an anti-Catholic bias when it comes to the principles, traditions, and beliefs of the Catholic Church. If a Catholic possesses those views, Chuck Schumer is going to make sure [he] can’t advance in the judicial system.”

In the debate over the confirmation of William Pryor, attorney general of Alabama, to a federal judgeship, Schumer, noting that the Catholic Pryor opposes Roe v. Wade, has said, “When it comes to the separation of church and state, we have to be concerned.” Robert Novak notes that Schumer has taken the argument over religion in government into previously forbidden territory. With Pryor and other judicial nominees, he has made an issue of an individual’s “deeply held religious beliefs.”

Schumer’s defenders, on the other hand, point out that most of the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who share Schumer’s opposition to Bush nominees, are also Catholics. In fact this is the real problem: Some of the most “anti-Catholic” men in politics are nominal Catholics who call themselves “pro-choice.”

There is nothing such Catholics hate more than a Catholic who lives his faith. They can be counted on to insist that they merely refrain from “imposing their views on others” — which implies (1) that they are resisting a temptation other, more fanatical Catholics are prone to; (2) that acting on the truths of natural law is tantamount to establishing Catholicism as the state religion; and (3) that their own “views” are Catholic. All three of these propositions are highly doubtful. They serve only to give faithless Catholics superficial excuses for taking anti-Catholic positions.

The second of these propositions is the real nub of the question. Opposing abortion isn’t a specifically Catholic “view.” Not so long ago, even Planned Parenthood agreed that abortion “kills a baby.” It went without saying that everyone opposed it. There is no specific revealed truth on which Catholic opposition depends.

What has happened is a case of moral erosion. As with other moral truths, the Catholic Church has stood firm while others have defected from a traditional consensus, until what once appeared universal began to appear almost a Catholic peculiarity.

Imagine that the consensus against cannibalism began to dissolve. Imagine that Pope after Pope continued to insist that it was “intrinsically wrong” for human beings to eat each other, when even the Episcopal Church had made reasonable accommodations to the evolving spirit of the time, until the Catholic Church was the only prominent institution that still opposed the new dietary freedom.

In that case, we would be told that opposition to dietary “choice” was a weird relic of medieval Catholic theology. Liberals would say they were “not pro-cannibal, but pro-choice.” The rallying cry would be “Keep the government out of the kitchen!” The alleged principle at stake would be “the separation of Church and state,” a principle violated by laws telling people what they can eat, which is, after all, “a deeply personal decision.”

Enlightened Catholic politicians would say that they “disagreed with the Pope on this issue.” Many would be “personally opposed” to cannibalism, but unwilling to “impose their views on society.” I’m reminded of my old friend Phil Nicolaides’ quip about Ted Kennedy: “His religion is so private he won’t even impose it on himself.”

So when the Catholic Church becomes the last standing champion of a civilized standard, that standard becomes known as “the Catholic position,” and even supposed Catholics edge away from it, while insisting that they are still loyal Catholics. Just what they are being loyal to is the question.

It’s of course bad manners to question the sincerity of people’s religious professions, but let’s get real. How many of these liberal Catholics are “personally opposed” to what they support in law? How would a Catholic politician who was truly “personally opposed” talk and act? Wouldn’t he forcefully express his moral horror of abortion, even if he thought it shouldn’t be outlawed? Wouldn’t he endorse and personally support private agencies to discourage abortion and help young pregnant women find adoptive parents for their babies? Wouldn’t he try to make it clear in every way that he wished no woman would ever exercise her legal option to have the child killed?

Sounds like a joke, doesn’t it? You can hardly imagine a “pro-choice” Catholic acting like that. Most of the breed favor public subsidies for abortion, forcing even fellow Catholics to pay for what they regard as a hideous crime. They take the position that abortion is wrong, but should occur as often as possible.

Above all, if you really do hold the “views” you don’t want to “impose,” don’t you at least have a duty, even a passion, to share those views?

Shouldn’t your most ardent wish be to convert as many people as possible to your Catholic faith? Shouldn’t you at least explain the Catholic position, and defend your Church against false and loose accusations?

I have no illusion that such arguments will spur Senator Kennedy to a new career as a Catholic evangelist. I make them only to illustrate what a truly sincere Catholic, who was also “pro-choice,” might be like, if he existed. It’s his existence I strongly doubt.

As for the principle of separation of church and state, just how does that work? How broadly does this principle apply? Does Schumer think it forbids U.S. aid to a Jewish state, whose official religion is Judaism and where Christians are in effect second-class citizens? Is it fair that American Christians should be taxed to pay for this? Evidently Schumer has no objection to that. But then, neither do his nominally Christian colleagues.

Blurred Battle Lines

When the very definition of a Catholic is so debased, I don’t see much point in calling this or that politician “anti-Catholic.” The whole Democratic Party is arrayed against any serious Christian, especially one who applies his faith to defending unborn children. The Democrats’ position — and they can claim the backing of the U.S. Supreme Court — is that the Constitution itself is effectively anti-Christian.

When Schumer speaks of a judicial nominee’s “deeply held religious beliefs,” he means that the nominee actually believes in his religion, and therefore withholds his internal assent from secular humanism. Since secular humanism doesn’t count as a “religion,” despite its implications for all revealed religion, its establishment as a virtual state creed doesn’t violate religious neutrality. That’s why public schools can teach evolution, promote fornication, abortion, and sodomy, and undermine Christianity, but mustn’t start the day with even a brief, bland prayer.

Liberal Catholics do their part for the secular humanist cause by professing to be on the side of the Church while constantly serving the interests of its enemies. They will keep the battle lines blurred as long as they are allowed to get away with calling themselves Catholics. If they were exposed for what they are, we would have little to fear from the Schumers.

=== <end quote> ===

When "Catholic politicians" are rebuke by the Church and by "Catholic voters" maybe then we will have a bedrock to retake our American experiment, The Republic. Unfortunately, it is looking more like the Roman Empire everyday in every way. What do you watch on TV and who do you vote for, if you vote at all!

And that’s the last word.
