KUTZTOWN, Pa., Sep. 12 - The campus orientation session at Kutztown University wasn't going well.

None of the 20-odd students slouched on benches outside the student union wanted to share much about themselves -- one freshman even refused to give her name.

Finally, a young man with intense, brown eyes and a white doo rag pulled tight across his skull stepped up. ''My name is Victor Nivar,'' he said in a strong, confident voice. ''My major is psychology, I'm excited to get it done and I want to get started.''

Victor, 18, has been doing what needed to be done for a long time. It's how he has overcome obstacles unimaginably more daunting than an awkward silence to become the first person in his family to enter college.

This is a young man who saw his father slain, whose family has struggled on the edge of poverty, and yet who still earned grades that were good enough to win him an acceptance letter.

Nonetheless, he couldn't have made it this far -- from the Bronx to Bethlehem to the expansive Kutztown campus in southeastern Pennsylvania -- without three people: his mother, a teacher and an admissions counselor. It's also their dream that Victor is fulfilling, perhaps even more than his own.

<extraneous deleted>

One thing going for him: Victor already learned life lessons about makings ends meet.

Always frugal, his mother scrimped and saved in order to move her family last year from a housing project and into their own home in south Bethlehem.

The address may have changed, but Priscila Martinez's edict remains intact: Until every homework assignment is completed, the television remains silent and dinner is left unserved.

<extraneous deleted>

The person most responsible for helping Victor find that resolve was Billy Staples, who turned his back on the corporate world a decade ago to teach at a school ''where no one else wanted to go.''

From the moment he arrived at Bethlehem's Northeast Middle School, Staples began to shower special attention on troubled kids passing through his seventh-grade English class. In September 1996, the principal at Bethlehem's Northeast Middle School, asked Staples to help out a sixth grader.

The student, the principal explained, had just witnessed his father's murder. Only later did Staples learn that Victor had spent the better part of his first days at Northeast hyperventilating and crying uncontrollably.

It was the brown eyes -- doleful and inquisitive, sad and playful -- that hooked him. ''His whole life story was in those eyes,'' Staples said.

Since he began teaching, the hyper-kinetic Staples has singled out 150 kids in an effort to keep them from succumbing to drugs and other vices that can derail their lives.

A student taken under Staples' wing is never abandoned. He attends their middle, high school and college commencements, toasts them at their weddings, and commiserates with them in prison if they stumble. He's also attended the funerals of 15.

If they abide by a few basic rules for two months -- daily school attendance, maintaining their grades and staying out of trouble -- Staples will also do everything in his power to introduce them to an athlete or celebrity role model.

<extraneous deleted>

Then the third leg of the platform that would launch him into college entered Victor's life: Carlos Ojeda. Like Victor, Ojeda was a first-generation college student. And like Victor, he overcame a tragic loss -- the death of a beloved infant godchild.

Credited with helping to boost Kutztown University's minority enrollment from 5 percent to 16 percent in three years, Ojeda had his first encounter with Victor during a recruiting visit to Liberty High School.

A former admissions officer who this summer shifted to the classroom to teach business courses, the 28-year-old Ojeda used his life story to attract minority students, especially Hispanics, to Kutztown.

''You talk to them in their own language and let them draw their own conclusions,'' he said.

Ojeda convinced Victor of at least one thing: If he did decide to go to college, Kutztown -- 45 minutes from Bethlehem -- would be his choice.

Are we "lifelines" or "anchors"? I hope we are all as good as these people.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Chuck Cundari, a real estate agent who raised funds for charitable causes, died Monday in his sleep in his Pine Island Ridge residence near Davie. He was 50.

Jack Paltani of Weston, a longtime friend, said Mr. Cundari "will be remembered for his personal mission to help those in need and extensive desire to give back to the community."

"For everyone who knew him," Paltani said, "his compassion, kindness and gentleness will never be forgotten."

In 1995, some South Plantation High School graduates turned to Mr. Cundari to raise funds for a reward to compensate anyone helping catch the killer of one of their friends.

In 1996, he coordinated a concert in Davie's rodeo arena to raise money for a Pembroke Pines man who needed a kidney transplant.

Among other organizations, Mr. Cundari also raised money for Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood.

"He was a wonderful, giving person," said Cindy Paolella of Davie, a friend for 18 years.

Mr. Cundari was born Sept. 25, 1952, in Westchester, N.Y., and attended Manhattan College. He moved to South Florida in 1980.

He is survived by his father, Charles Cundari Sr., of North Carolina, and his brothers, John and Robert Cundari, of Pine Island Ridge.

A viewing will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fred Hunter's funeral home, 2401 S. University Drive in Davie. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. David Catholic Church, 3900 S. University Drive, also in Davie.

[JR: That would make him around class of 1972. I don't know why he didn't finish but it sounds like he was a "good guy". Maybe the time he spent at Manhattan impacted him, or maybe it was self-selection (good guys choose Manhattan), I had many fellow engineering students who didn't finish. The draft, the drinking, the drugs, the Village, there were so many distractions. To some extent it was a "lost generation" time. Any way, I report it, and such, because maybe one of our readers knew him. And, it makes me think of the many friends I have "lost" over time. ]

SJC clears Boston University of responsibility in 1998 basketball fight
By Associated Press, 9/20/2003 02:48

BOSTON (AP) The state's highest court has ruled that Boston University is not responsible for a fight during a men's basketball game that resulted in a broken nose for a player on an opposing team.

Kenneth Kavanagh, a player from Manhattan College, sued the BU Board of Trustees over the fight in Suffolk Superior Court. Boston University player LeVar Folk was ejected from the Dec. 22, 1998 game when a review of videotape showed Folk had punched Kavanagh.

In the suit, Kavanagh said BU should have known that Folk was likely to act aggressively, and that BU coach Dennis Wolff encouraged the behavior. He also argued that students on athletic scholarships, like Folk, should be considered legal representatives of their schools.

The Supreme Judicial Court rejected those claims, saying the lower court had acted correctly in refusing to hear the lawsuit.

In its ruling, the SJC said BU had no duty to protect Kavanagh; that no one could have foreseen Folk would act aggressively; and that Kavanagh did not show that Wolff was reckless.

HEADLINE: At JWT, Bob Jeffrey Means the World ; Revival in N.Y. leads North America president to worldwide CEO job

BYLINE: by Andrew Mcmains

NEW YORK Last spring, on the afternoon of his fifth anniversary at J. Walter Thompson in New York, Bob Jeffrey walked into a seventh-floor meeting area where he expected a handful of senior executives to toast him with champagne. Instead, 300 staffers were waiting for him.

Jeffrey, a modest man, wasn't told of the scale of the event for fear that he would shy away from such a grand gesture.

At the toast-and-roast, executive creative directors Rich Sabean and Jeff Watzman mocked Jeffrey's Kennedyesque accent (he grew up in Providence, R.I.), while New York COO Marc Capra read a list of "Top 10 Reasons Why We're Glad That Bob Is Our Boss."

Toward the end of the hour long tribute, Jeffrey, JWT's North American president, thanked the staff in a voice choked with emotion. Attendees said it was an unusual moment - one that wouldn't have happened five years earlier, when the shop was stricken by paralyzing power struggles and flagging morale.

Colleagues say Jeffrey, whom worldwide CEO Peter Schweitzer handpicked as his successor last week, has transformed the JWT culture into one that is more open, responsive and inclusive. The New York office has grown 60 percent on his watch, adding $525 million in billings to reach an estimated $1.4 billion.

Schweitzer unveiled the succession plan, which takes effect Jan. 1, at a meeting of

50 top network executives last Tuesday. He credits Jeffrey, 50, a driven, disciplined and thoughtful leader, with bringing a new passion to the $9 billion global shop, which used to be known as a "university" led by old-school account chiefs. "His dynamism manifested itself in the recruitment of top talent, a stellar creative product, enhanced strategic planning capabilities and best-in-class delivery of integrated marketing solutions," says Schweitzer, 64, who will remain in the picture as worldwide chairman. What's more, says Martin Sorrell, CEO of JWT parent WPP Group, "People like him. He's a good leader."

"I'm going to be able to work with clients all over the world, and I'm excited about that," says Jeffrey, adding, "It's not just about advertising. I think it's [about] making the organization more creative. Everybody has to feel creative. Everybody has to feel they can generate ideas."

The plan also calls for the promotion of Michael Mdel, president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Mdel, 53, based in London, will become worldwide president-another title being relinquished by Schweitzer. The moves leave open the job of North America, as well as Mdel's regional post.

(Jeffrey and Mdel will cover both for now). The agency, however, is said to be focusing on a short list of candidates for a New York president-the post that first lured Jeffrey from Interpublic Group's Lowe in April 1998.

At the same time, it took then WPP human resources chief Brian Brooks and JWT CEO Chris Jones four months to woo Jeffrey, largely because he struggled with the idea of breaking away from Gary Goldsmith, his longtime creative colleague and friend. The two had launched Goldsmith/Jeffrey, a hot creative boutique that Lowe absorbed in 1996. Before that, they had worked together on brands such as Gaines dog food and Hershey at Chiat/Day and DDB in New York, where they both started their careers in the early '80s.

"It was a grueling recruitment exercise," recalls Brooks, now head of HR at IPG, who spent three or four Sundays with Jeffrey that spring. "For most people, it wouldn't take that much. But it was about Gary." Loyalty is a recurring theme in Jeffrey's career. Not only does he display it, he instills it in others.

Another common theme is captured by creative recruiter Gloria Viseltear: "He's respectful. He's funny. He's very sensitive. He's a very nice person," she says.

Not that he is a pushover. Says former JWT creative chief Bill Hamilton: "He's always had great ambition. And he's the kind of account guy that every creative guy would die for."

Goldsmith still marvels at the passion Jeffrey displayed when selling one particular creative concept for chocolate milk to Hershey in 1983. "He was incredibly intense," he says. "It was basically like he wasn't going to sit down until [the client] bought it." The spot, "Chocolate Cow," went on to win a Cannes Lion.

That intensity also reveals itself outside the office. A one-time marathon runner, Jeffrey used to play tennis regularly and now focuses on weight training and yoga, doing one or the other six times a week.

Russ Jeffrey, who shared an apartment with his older brother in the early '80s, says Bob entered the New York City Marathon six months after he picked up running. Individual achievement and discipline motivate Bob as much as competition does, Russ says. Jeffrey says athletics are cathartic and give him the "warrior" mentality he needs on the job. "I find the best thinking and the best creativity is when I'm in some kind of athletic mode," he says.

To balance that aggressive spirit, Jeffrey is a big believer in holistic methods for achieving well-being. At JWT, he has even introduced a relaxation room and organic-juice carts.

But it's Jeffrey's intellectual rigor and curiosity that clients such as Tim Pearson and Matt Shattock appreciate. "What Bob brings is an intellect, an energy, a progressiveness and a thoughtfulness," says Pearson, vice chairman, global managing partner for marketing and communications at KPMG. Adds Shattock, president and CEO of confectionery for the Americas at Cadbury-Schweppes: "He's a real business partner, and his curiosity is boundless. He's a guy you want to spend time with."

Silver Bullets going strong in Somers league

By Mike Sabini

For The Patent Trader

North Salem resident Vinny Papa and his softball-playing buddies were looking for a name for their softball team.

"We were just sitting around one day, saw the silver streaks (gray hair) on us and came up with the name 'Silver Bullets,' " said Papa, who is 48 and plays second base for the squad that qualified for the Division A semifinals in the Somers men's softball league.

Two years ago, the Silver Bullets won the B Division and before that took home the C crown. The key to their success is the close bond they have with each other.

"We like to socialize with one another," said Papa, who has played softball for the last 18 years. "If you play with us, you go out with us afterwards. We socialize all year with each other. It's not like we just play softball and don't see each other the rest of the year.

"We also play basketball at Somers Middle School. It's not a league, we just get together and have some fun."

One of the youngest members of the team is Jarrod Jackette (shortstop), who is 28 and lives in Katonah.

"I enjoy it," said Jackette, who has played on the team for six years. "At first I was intimidated being one of the younger players, but they are a great bunch of guys who accepted me. I like hanging out after the game with the guys and having some laughs."

This season, Jarrod has also been able to play with his brother, Justin, who played on the Manhattan College men's basketball team before graduating this spring.

"It's been great," Jarrod Jackette said of playing with his brother. "It's the first time we've been able to play something competitive together. It's exciting."

Also on the team are team MVP Matt Faranda (outfield), Ted Kugler (left field), David Figari (catcher), Glenn Karolagian (right field), Andy Lask (pitcher), Harry Peterson (outfield), Armando Barquin (third base), Scott Johnson (outfield), Ernie Della Vecchia (infield), Moe Dippolito (catcher), Joe Anastasi (first base) and Paul Harold (outfield).

Penn Volleyball Falls to UMBC in Five Games

Heather Janssen led the Quakers with 17 kills.

Sept. 20, 2003

Villanova, Pa. - After leading the match two games to none, University of Pennsylvania volleyball drops a five-game match 30-19, 34-32, 29-31, 25-30, 7-15 to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), Saturday afternoon at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse in the Wildcat Classic. With the win UMBC improves to 7-5 overall, while the Quakers fall to 2-3. Heather Janssen (Campbell, Calif.) led the Quakers with 17 kills. Meghan Schloat (Bedford, N.Y.) added a double-double with 48 assists and 15 digs.

The Quakers jumped on top of the Retrievers early by opening the match and game one 4-0. Penn steadily increased its advantage and led 17-8 before a UMBC timeout. Michelle Kauffman (San Diego, Calif.) led the way for the Quakers with three kills. Meghan Schloat added two service aces and Meredith Damore had one of her own. The Quakers improved their lead throughout the game and capped off a 30-19 win with back-to-back assisted blocks by Janssen and Lynzy Caton.

In the second, Penn took the early advantage, but UMBC quickly worked its way into the game. After nine ties and six lead changes, the Quakers advanced to as much as a four-point lead at 25-21. The Retrievers responded by inching its back into the game and tying the score again at 29-29 and took the extra-point lead at 32-31. Penn had an answer of its own by closing out the game with three-straight points and the game-winning kill by Elisabeth Kwak-Hefferan (Wheaton, Ill.) to give Penn a 34-32 win. Freshman Jordan Danly (Fullerton, Calif.), who did not play in Penn's California matches, had any important six kills to lead her team. Janssen was five for nine in attempts for the period.

The third game was a battle from the outset. UMBC held its biggest lead of the match at 8-5 before the Quakers recalled the game at 9-8. Penn pushed to only a three-point edge at 13-10 as the Retrievers raced to recapture the lead at 19-16. However, the Red and Blue would not go away and again knotted the score at 21-21 on an Ashley Smith (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.) kill. The lead waddled back and forth before UMBC pushed Penn to game point twice and eventually won 31-29 to drive the match into a fourth game.

In the fourth game, the score was tied 14 times. Penn held onto the game for the majority of the time before UMBC battled back and took the lead at 24-23. The Retrievers would not relinquish their edge and won the game easily 30-25.

In deciding fifth game, UMBC crept to an 8-6 lead as the teams switched sides of the floor. The Retrievers' strong play in the second part of the game led to a 15-7 win. The Quakers hit .235 for the match (66-187), but only .087 (5-23) for the finale.

The Quakers return to action later this evening when they face Manhattan College of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Manhattan is 1-1 in the tournament including a five-game victory over host Villanova this morning and a loss to UMBC yesterday afternoon.

What good is that e-mail update service you use if you wind up in Portland with a cousin you didn't know before?  PB's convention is surname followed by first initial unless you happen to be the first of the clan to work for pb like Pat.  But then life's not perfect.  Pat is a Jet fan and a Penn St alum.

[JR: Fought at Gettysburg? Seriously, you have a lot to share with us. You have to be the "Senior Subscriber". I'm not sure, but I think you have the title. Time does fly. I have elderly relatives that are getting older, and more obtuse! That you can do all this speaks volumes. We as a country are losing a lot as your generation passes on. Feel free to tell us in whatever detail you want about all three things you cited, as well as MC preWW1. I don't know about the rest of the readers, but I would find that fascinating. Some of the best emails are the ones that give a personal story with a historical and MC context. Capturing that wisdom is a real score for my modest effort here.  ]

Hello John,

This is a great idea. I have tried to register online to that Alumni website and it does not show my records. I sent a form twice to figure out what the problem was but it still doesn't appear listed. Maybe you can direct me in the right direction.

I graduated in May, 2002 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. My full name as a student is: Jennifer Kent.

If you have any information on how to go about this, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Jennifer

Hi Ms. Jennifer:

Thanks for the compliment but like most things it just kind of grew on its own with help from our fellow alums.

I have called on my two contacts in the alum office Grace and Joe to see if they can help. I have worked with many alums to get started with the site but their records were always there to start with.

The "system", what I call the MCOLDB, has a lot of errors with it. That's why I have tried several times to create my own local reference database, but I am a lousy record keeper.

My experience is that the MCOLDB is only updated with new graduating classes annually in January. At least that is what it feels like to me. I'm not a DBA for the College so I am just guessing. I am on the College's Computer Governance Committee and I'll inquire for you.

Enjoy the jottings,

John

You may add me to the list.  I graduated in 1972, BA. Served in USAF 1972 to 1976.

Also, son Edward Herger graduated Manhattan in 2003, BSME.  He has been training for the 2004 Olympics in weightlifting.  He won bronze two years in in the US National Championships in the Mid-heavyweight division.  Ed won gold at three of last four (was injured the year he did not win) Empire State Games.

Ed is available for an ME-type engineering position in the NY metro area. <privacy invoked>

Dr. Heckman also may consider contacting the American Legion (AL) regarding his veteran status discrimination case.  The politicians want AL's endorsement, but never do anything for it.  If no one else, the federal government has a duty to ensure that veterans are properly treated.  I believe that means well-earned affirmative/positive action in hiring and advancement (Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Act of 1974).   It is a prohibited personnel practice to deny veteran's preference (5 USC 2302 (b) 12.).  My experience has been that Federal personnel laws/regulations are routinely ignored or violated by "out-of-control" supervisors.

Dr. Heckman's attorney may want to review recent race discrimination case law and apply those class action-type principles.  An age discrimination case is Reeves vs. Sanderson Plumbing, 99-536.  There is an age discrimination, class action lawsuit vs. FDIC being run by an Atlanta attorney: Jack Rosenburg (404) 584-6699.

What is the percentage of veterans in the agency?  And, what is the percentage of veterans among agency executives?  Do agency hiring and promotion policies effectively discriminate against veterans?  "The percentage of veterans in the federal work force is holding about steady at 26 percent, the Office of Personnel Management reports in its latest compilation of statistics, through fiscal 2000. That's more than twice the percentage in the labor pool as a whole (11 percent), in part a result of the hiring preferences the government gives to veterans.  Veterans accounted for 31 percent of new hires during the year while accounting for 45 percent of retirees. The Defense Department employed 52 percent of the 446,890 veterans in the count, with the Transportation and Veterans Affairs departments next at 35 and 28 percent, respectively. The Education and Health and Human Services departments were at the bottom among major agencies with 9.6 and 9.3 percent, respectively."  Source: Fedweek Issue: Wednesday, 3/6/2002.

[JR: <1> Added <2> I was USAF from 70-73 so we overlapped. I spent my time in Md <3> Congrats and bon chance to him. <4> Noted. <5>  Heckman has fallen off the list. But, what you cite, just proves that the government is not our friend. Just a colossus, that is "dumb", can't follow it's own rules, and expensive.]

Subject: Why to Use Sandbags on the Floorboards of The HUMVEE

Today, 9/16 at approximately 1400, SO-38 & the Bn S-5 were out assing a local Ad Dilyuiah school. No one was there to greet us as the other schools had previously did earlier. Suddenly several explosive rounds went off very close to our location. The teams mounted up and to escape possible incoming rounds. What happened was that less than 1/2 mile away a 3 vehicle convory was attacked and ambushed in our AO as it entered "Ambush Alley" by several RPG's.  Team S0-38 was the first to arrive on the scene. One vehicle down and smoldering from the RPG. The area was secured and a search was conducted for the attackers. One soldier was seriously injured. Lucky he had sandbags on the floor board. If not he would have lost both feet or more (see pics). He was assessed and sent to our HQ where he was MEDEVAC-ed out. I am now a firm believer of the sandbags as I witnessed their effectiveness...they absorbed the majority in the impact, but the soldier appears to have taken a 50 cal round  the both ankles as per the large bore round by the lower door hinge of the driver's side.....as you can see SGT Boisseou, is observing the extent of the damage to the front of the destryrd vehicle...last Friday we encountered and IED, today this...This AO is very hot as one compound took over 18 mortars rounds in one night, last night there was a gun battle in town.....trying to CA work in this area is obviously challenging!! [JR: See the pixs at http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=xiwgp6n.9avxxvzb&x=0&y=-bt6gsb   Hope this works since it's the first time I have tried to share photos by this mechanism. If it does, then I have a mechanism for sharing pictures with Jottings. Thanks to Mike McEneney for testing the "reach-ability" of this. Now, I can share pictures that get sent in. ]

[JR: Thanks for a great update. ]

FINAL WORDS THIS WEEK

=== <begin quote> ===

"One of the enduring political myths of our generation has been the claim that the rise of federal deficits during the 1980s resulted from President Ronald Reagan's 'tax cuts for the rich.' ... Why then were there federal deficits during the Reagan administration? Because Congress spent even more money than the rising tax revenues brought in. There is no amount of money Congress cannot outspend." --Thomas Sowell

=== <end quote> ===

And, with several "wars" going on – Iraq, Bosnia, Korea, drug, poverty, etc. etc. – Congress will only spend money on the "essentials". "Essential" to getting themselves reelected. That's why I vote against any incumbent.

Curmudgeon

And that’s the last word.
