HEADLINE: DR. JOHN J. MCLAUGHLIN, WWII HERO

Dr. John J. McLaughlin, general practitioner and World War II hero, died Friday (August 8, 2003) at Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a short illness. He was 95.

Born in Troy, McLaughlin graduated from Manhattan College and Columbia University's School of Physicians and Surgeons, where he earned his medical degree. He practiced in Albany for a few years and also worked at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City.

McLaughlin joined the Army in 1940 and served at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. But it was as a surgeon for the 1st Battalion Medical Detachment -- part of the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), commonly called "Merrill's Marauders" -- in Burma, that he became known as a hero. During the Marauders' retreat from Burma, Cpt. McLaughlin continued doctoring under extreme conditions, using his uniform for bandages and his mouth to clean wounds.

His bravery and medical expertise have been noted in numerous books by senior officers that relate the exploits of Merrill's Marauders. For McLaughlin's efforts, he was awarded the Combat Medical Badge, a Presidential Unit Citation and the Bronze Star for exemplary service. Following his return from Burma, he was promoted to the rank of major.

After the war, McLaughlin returned to Washington, where he pursued further medical studies at Catholic University. It was there that he met Elizabeth McDonnell, whom he married in 1947. They were together 50 years until her death in 1997.

He set up his medical practice in Buffalo and was frequently sought out by other doctors for his diagnostic abilities. He was known for educating his patients.

In a 1993 column, News Washington Bureau Chief Douglas Turner called McLaughlin a "learned, caring man in touch with humanity and respect for the eternal."

McLaughlin was a member of St. Mark's Parish for 56 years, as well as the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Third Order Dominicans. Both before and after his retirement, he devoted much of his time to Right to Life issues.

He is survived by six daughters, Mary of Buffalo, Anne of Minneapolis, Elizabeth Bohen of Kenmore, Lucy of Houston, Catherine of Buffalo and Martha of Clarence; two sons, Joseph of Buffalo and John of Hamburg; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The track is also a popular spot for college alumni fund-raising events. Luncheons are common, Lewi said. Although the track caterer charges $37.50 a head, organizations add onto that to make money. For the Double "H" event, tickets were $75 each.

Democrat makes 11th District bid
Mangan again runs against Dusanenko for Legislature seat
Jeremy Wallace
The Journal News

Congers Democrat John Mangan Jr. said he will run for a seat in the Rockland Legislature.

Mangan, a licensed engineer and an attorney, said he will run in the 11th Legislative District, which includes Valley Cottage and Congers. About 17,000 people live in the district.

Mangan, 59, said he enjoys contributing his time to the community and wants to do more.

"I would like to get more involved in county government," Mangan said.

Mangan has never held elective office, but he has worked in government. He is the chairman of the Clarkstown Architecture and Landscape Commission. He has been on that panel for about 14 years.

In 1999, he lost a race for the county Legislature, falling to incumbent Legislator Theodore Dusanenko, R-Valley Cottage.

Mangan said he learned during that race how hard it was to campaign for public office.

"It just takes a lot more hard work and knocking on people's doors," Mangan said.

He is the only Democrat in the race. He will again challenge Dusanenko, who has been in the Legislature for 30 years.

Dusanenko, a former Clarkstown supervisor, is also running on the Independence and Conservative Party lines. Mangan also has the Working Families Party endorsement.

The winner will get a four-year term that pays $29,389 a year.

Although he lost to Dusanenko before, Mangan said he believes he can defeat him in the rematch.

"It's time for a change," Mangan said. "It is important to get some new blood in there."

All 17 county Legislature seats are up for election this year. It is the first election under a redistricting plan that was adopted last year.

The general election will take place Nov. 4.

Mangan, former president of the Congers Civic Association, said he would push to close the Indian Point nuclear power plants, preserve more open space and ensure there are more recreation fields for children.

Mangan, president of the Congers Little League, said there were not enough fields where children can play baseball, softball and other sports.

"It is a very real problem," said Mangan, who served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Mangan works for Verizon in New York City. He also has a private law practice.

HEADLINE: Former Kentucky basketball player arrested in Lexington
DATELINE: LEXINGTON, Ky.

Heshimu Evans, a forward on Kentucky's 1998 NCAA championship team, was arrested after police said he left the scene of an accident.

Evans, 28, was arrested about 10 p.m. Thursday, Lexington police Lt. Dwayne Holman said. Holman said Evans was involved in an accident in a parking lot.

Evans was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving with an expired temporary tag, having no insurance and operating on a suspended or revoked drivers' license, Holman said. Evans posted bond shortly after being arrested.

Evans played for Kentucky for two seasons after transferring from Manhattan College. He was the sixth man on the Wildcats' 1998 championship team and started for Kentucky the following season.

He is the second member of those Kentucky teams to be arrested recently.

Wayne Turner, a guard at Kentucky from 1995-99, was arrested in Boston after police found a loaded handgun in his car. He pleaded innocent to charges of illegal possession of a firearm and a weapon with a big supply chamber. He faces an Aug. 18 court date.

GOAL: Provide managerial and technical leadership expertise in the areas of Project Management, Requirements Development, and Disaster Recovery Modeling.

CAREER SUMMARY:

Systems engineer with over eleven years of multidisciplinary experience and training in developing hardware, software, and requirements. Areas of expertise and interest include multidisciplinary systems engineering, requirements engineering and management, network survivability, disaster recovery, and management of multiprotocol and multiservice networks. Presented at conferences provisioning techniques for multiservice networks to make all network devices cooperate during the fault recovery process. Advanced background in requirements engineering and process improvement. I am interested in network convergence and how to integrate responses which occur due to a catastrophic failure event, which triggers multiple and concurrent recovery processes at different layers. There are many possibilities on how to repair affected connections during a fiber cut. I have looked at most legacy technologies and integrated them with newer recovery techniques so that service connectivity is restored.  I have made a number of presentations at various technical conferences and wrote a number of articles in the area of network survivability in addition to implementing existing recovery techniques in real products that are in-service.

Darby recruits collegiate players for Mittelmark Invitational
Sam Weinman
The Journal News

In one of the most competitive amateur golf regions in the country, not even a great golf course guarantees players will show up for your tournament. Very often a club will have to go even further.

At Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale, an active recruitment of local talent along with several professional touches has assured a stellar field for tomorrow's annual Mittelmark Invitational.

The 36-hole event, won last year by Ardsley's Joel Lulla, will have a decidedly collegiate feel to it. Working with St. John's golf coach Frank Darby, Fenway has brought in several leading young players, among them recent St. John's graduate Andrew Svoboda of Winged Foot, Clemson sophomore Martin Catalioto and Manhattan College veteran Chris Damiano of Westchester Hills.

"That's the direction we're going," said the club's head pro, Heath Wassem. "It's a great avenue to recruit young players."

Also in the field is Plainfield (N.J.) Country Club's Mike Stamberger, who, in winning last week's Met Amateur, held off Knollwood's Michael Quagliano, Winged Foot's Joe Sommers, Minisceongo's Patrick Pierson, and 2003 Westchester Amateur champion Chuck Del Priore of Wykagyl.

"It's been a steady progression," Wassem said of the event's growth. "I'd like to think it's now equal with an event like the Hochster (held down the road at Quaker Ridge Golf Club)."

Also tomorrow, Scarsdale Golf Club will look to defend its title in the WGA's best-ball of four championship at Waccabuc Country Club. The trio of Ed Howard, Hugh Shevlin and Dave Toole returns alongside newcomer Ed Harrison. Twenty-five other teams are competing.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

PERMITS

Many Title V's are due for a 5-year update, and some facilities may have to add CAM and MACT rules this time around. Also NOx SIP calls (a current Tennessee issue) are gearing up, and this plus expanding non-attainment areas may trigger RACT submissions for many facilities. If you need back up, please give us a call.

PROJECTS

TMTS is staying busy with a variety or work, including thermal design and heat transfer for tanks and sizing of cooling towers, filtration for the international space station, corrosion testing, odor control, VOC oxidizers, MGP coal tars, modeling of ground level pollutant dispersion and ambient air monitoring, design of wood gasifier internals, boiler low NOx burner retrofit, dryer blue haze emissions, and thermal desorption of soil, drilling muds and RCRA/low level nuclear waste.

COURSES AND PAPERS

Joe Santoleri and I will be giving a two-day combustion and air pollution shortcourse via AWMA. It will be in New Orleans, on December 4 and 5. Contact Joel Anne Sweithelm, 412-232-3444, ext. 3141 for more information and to register for the course, which is AWMA AIR-311. You can also access information at AWMA's website http://www.awma.org/events/Courses/AIR311/default.asp

The course is also scheduled for 6/21-22/04 in conjunction with the AWMA Annual Conference in Indianapolis, IN.

Other courses available are a half- or full-day course on NOx Control, as well as half- or full-day courses on thermal treatment of soil. These are available on an in-house basis for industrial firms and regulatory authorities and other interested parties.

We are working with AWMA on an E-learning course on NOx Control for Industrial and Utility Sources, and hope that will be rolled out by year end.

You can get more detail on what is covered on these courses, on our website at http://tfmcgowan.home.mindspring.com/courses/index.html  You can also access NOx Control and other papers on the website.

Hope all is well with you and yours!

Hi Roberta:

Thanks for the reply. I am not the world's best record keeper.

That's an interesting problem. When Jottings leaves here, it is a plain old ascii text file. When you open it in word, that software must be picking up the formatting and creating tables.

If it would make your job simpler, you could just pick up the issue from the web site as an HTM file. Word would know instantly what to do with that. Or, I can just email you the word document as an attachment.

Whatever you'd like to do.

Hi John,

I loved your Final Thoughts about the 6-year old girl in Naples, Florida who got busted for operating a lemonade stand without a permit.  However, in keeping with the thought that one should make lemonade if Life hands you a lemon, why not look at the longterm benefits of this absurd situation.  At the very least this experience has taught this youngster the benefits of Libertarianism and limited government, and to always be wary of any government.  Your article also failed to report the other nasty side of government intervention - Taxes.  The little girl should be made to understand that whatever benefits she derives from her own efforts must be shared with her eternal partner - Uncle Sam.  Thus, to teach this little girl to be a tax-paying, politically-correct American, I suggest that she send Uncle Sam his share of her lemonade enterprise.  She should pack all the used-up, squeezed lemon rinds into the used plastic cups, and mail them to Washington with instructions to route these to the proper Federal agency (I'm virtually certain that there is a bureau or government agency that deals with this) for recycling, and then to send the proceeds from the recycling to the US Treasury so that she can be credited with paying her taxes.  Is there no limit to the stupidity of some of our bureaucrats?

Regards,
Lou Apoldo

FINAL WORDS THIS WEEK

http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig4/griffus1.html

My Day With the Housing Inspector
by David Griffus

=== <begin quote> ===

The sad message of this story is that it is typical of the way in which people are forced to deal with government agencies like the IRS, airport security, and local police. Since bureaucrats have the threat of violence backing their every whim, citizens and taxpayers are victims of extortion, allowing themselves to be pushed around by the tyrannical, dysfunctional crime family that is the modern state.

=== <end quote> ===

It is humorous to see people realize that the government is not our friend, protector, or anything other than a well intentioned thug. No one can convince me that the tyranny of good intentions is robbing us blind. Even the "Arnold" candidacy is more of the elite who will tell us what is good for us. The genius of the founding fathers was to put government in a box, patrolled by a free press, and enforced by an armed citizenry who had just beaten the world's best army. Unfortunately, we have let this giant out of the box by confusing results with intentions. Allowing it to define and legislate our rights away. Take away our arms that might threaten it's supremacy. And tell us it is all for our own good. Or "for the children". How stupid are we? Sorry Arnold. You are just the same as all the other socialist and state-ist politicians. Can't fool me any more.

Curmudgeon

And that’s the last word.
