There are a couple of bad words, but the fellow captures the essence of how people really feel about computing. It's funny. And, I believe that if you subbed "windows" for "mac", it would be just about as true.

I wish I could be as funny when I have to express my frustration with life. ;-(

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

DATELINE: TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 1

Sallie Mae, the nation's leading provider of education funding, today announced that it has appointed Bill Ayers president of "Sallie Mae Florida," a newly created division focused on the needs of schools and families in that state.  In this role, Ayers will coordinate the company's sales efforts across colleges and universities in Florida, as well as bolster Sallie Mae's presence among Florida students and their parents.

    (Logo:  http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20030617/SLMLOGO-b )

Florida has long been a key state for Sallie Mae.  The company's investment in the state has yielded dividends for both Sallie Mae and the state.  Sallie Mae and its education-lending brands serve a majority of Florida's 176 colleges and universities, providing them with college-financing resources for students and student-loan application and management solutions for financial aid offices.  In addition, Sallie Mae is a dedicated corporate citizen in Florida, employing 1,200 individuals at its loan-servicing center in Lynn Haven, Fla.

"Bill's appointment builds on Sallie Mae's long-standing history of providing quality service and support to colleges and universities in Florida," said Kevin Moehn, senior vice president of Sallie Mae's higher education sales.  "Dedicating someone of Bill's caliber to the colleges and universities in Florida demonstrates our commitment to higher education in that state."

Ayers is a proven industry leader with 15 years of experience in the student loan industry, beginning his career at Chase Manhattan Bank.  In 1997, he joined Chase Education First, a joint venture between Sallie Mae and JP Morgan Chase, as its southeast regional director of sales.  Most recently, Ayers served as executive vice president of Chase Education First, where he helped guide Chase to the no. 1 FFELP lender position in academic year 2001 - 2002.

In his new role, Ayers will lead an effort consisting of sales, marketing and servicing staff dedicated to serving Florida schools.  In addition, he will work closely with Rick Robey, Sallie Mae's president of higher education sales for the southeast region, as well as the company's education-lending brands, Chase Education First, Bank One's Education One Group and Nellie Mae. MORE

"Bill's tremendous talent and reputation among schools in Florida will strengthen our efforts to deliver top-notch resources to families and higher education communities in that state," said Robey.  "In addition, we are especially pleased that Bill's role will cultivate new ways of presenting college-access information to the diverse population in the state, in particular, meeting the unique needs of Florida's Hispanic community."

Ayers received a bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College.  A 13-year resident of Florida, he resides in Tampa, Fla., with his family.

Hi John,

Some good news to include in Jasper Jottings!

1. I got married at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Brooklyn, NY on June 28, 2003 to Bill Cangialose from Lodi, NJ.  Our reception was at Giando on the Water and we went to Italy and Greece for 2 weeks.  Now, it's back to reality and we are living in Lodi.

2. I've been working for Covenant House NY (homeless shelter for troubled teens) for the last year.  I manage Ezekiel's Cafe at 52 Greenwich Avenue (between 6th and 7th Avenues).  Ezekiel's is an earned income project owned and operated by Covenant House NY.  In addition to being a store-front, where anyone can come in to get delicious food, we do catering!  In fact, Ezekiel's catered the April 2003 NYC Alumni Club event.  If MC or any alums need events catered, please give me a call at 212-727-6507.  There is going to be an article in the Daily News (scheduled for Wed. 8/6) featuring Ezekiel's and the training program.

Thanks for your great work!

HEADLINE: Annual race honors M-E athlete; Matzke died after '97 fall at Cornell
BYLINE: CONNIE NOGAS

ENDWELL -- Pete Matzke loved to fly around the track and splash through muddy cross-country trails during his high school days at Maine-Endwell.

"He wasn't the most talented runner," recalled his now-retired cross-country coach, Ralph Rarrick of Endwell. "He just had a drive. When things were tough, he would just go hard and come through for me."

The 1996 graduate and engineering student at Manhattan College died in an accidental fall on the Cornell University campus in August 1997. But his friends and classmates haven't forgotten him. They'll gather Saturday for the sixth-annual Pete Matzke Memorial 5-Kilometer Road Race at the school where he once ran.

All proceeds fund a $1,000 scholarship given annually to a graduating senior, usually a runner.

"We try to look for somebody with Pete's spirit of good sportsmanship and enthusiasm," said his mother, Barbara Ann Turecek.

This weekend will be a reunion for Matzke's friends and classmates, and other M-E graduates who didn't know him. Many travel from out of state.

"We've all gone our separate ways," said 24-year-old Scott Scheibner, a 1997 graduate now living in Raleigh, N.C. "This is one time of the year that we are certain that we will see each other."

Old friends will catch up with each other on the track and then gather for a beer or lunch at Endwell eateries such as Jonathan's Restaurant or The Galley.

And they'll share memories of Matzke, such as the one about the time a local radio station mentioned all the local teams competing in sectionals except M-E's cross-country team. Matzke, Scheibner and other top runners drove to the station to complain and Matzke wound up on the air. The group won that race, too.

Kevin Halligan, another 1996 graduate, lives in Queens but will lace up his sneakers Saturday in Endwell.

"He lives on in our minds," Halligan said.

Matzke's friends plan to make the trip home for the race as long as they can.

"He would do anything for a friend," Scheibner said. "I will always come back. I just want to be able to support the memory of Pete."

Registration runs from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Saturday at Maine-Endwell High School and will be followed by the 8 a.m. race. You also can register at www.me.stier.org/matzke/ masterpage.html. Race-day registration costs $14. Walkers are welcome.

Peter Karl Matzke

Peter Karl Matzke was born on November 4, 1977. He was a lively child, always putting a smile on the face of anyone he encountered. Pete was a member of the Maine-Endwell High School indoor and outdoor track team and also the cross country team. He was the captain of the cross country team 1994-1995, where he played a key role in many team victories, including two section four championships. While he was in high school he was noted not only for his athletic abilities but also for his intelligence. After graduation he went off to Manhattan College to major in chemical engineering. He made the Dean's list twice his freshmen year. He was also a member of the Manhattan College crew team. Pete liked to spend time with his family and friends. On August 9, 1997 Pete passed away suddenly as a result of an accident. The Pete Matzke Memorial Road Race was created as a way to honor this spirited competitor. The race is run every year so that all who knew Pete can remember him as someone who made us smile, who was a great friend, a ladies man, and a hard-working, dedicated athlete. Pete was a great role model, had a wonderful sense of humor, and touched the lives of many. His determination, upbeat attitude, and positive outlook on life will always be in our hearts.

How exciting!

We had a really nice article in our local paper.  I will send you a copy of that and the brochure we give to all runners.

This year's race was last Saturday, August 2nd.  There were 8 runners with Manhattan College connections who came up from the NYC area.  At the end of the race we give away "door prizes".  I think all 8 won a prize.  They thought that was funny.  We took their picture with them all holding up their prizes.

This was the Sixth Annual Memorial Race.  We had 130 entrants in the race and that is the lowest we have ever had.  Quite a few "regulars" were on vacation and had contacted me saying they were sorry to miss the race.  Many of those sent contributions which was really sweet of them.  The race's website is www.me.stier.org/matzke/masterpage.html.

By the way, I live in Endwell, NY which is part of the greater Binghamton area.  Bobby Gonzales is a native of Binghamton.  My daughter and I are college basketball fans and we try to catch any Manhattan College games that are on cable.  Of course we were able to see a lot of games this year.

If you have any questions, feel free to write to me.

Governor Announces Special Reliability Master

TRENTON, NJ (2003-08-05) Continuing his commitment to ensure reliable electrical service for JCP&L customers, Governor James E. McGreevey today announced the selection of Patrick J. Downes, an individual with more than 40 years of experience in the energy field, to serve as an independent Special Reliability Master. Downes will be under contract to the Board of Public Utilities - the State regulatory body investigating the power outages which occurred in shore communities over Fourth of July Weekend.

"We are holding JCP&L accountable -- with emergency backup measures, a compensation program and now by appointing a Special Reliability Master to ensure reliability for the long-term," said McGreevey. "Pat Downes is simply the best New Jersey has to offer. He is a 40-year veteran with experience and skills that are unparrelled, and he will excel at analyzing and making recommendation on how JCP&L can ensure reliability in its delivery of electricity to customers."

The Governor said Downes will make recommendations to the Board of Public Utilities on the actions needed to ensure short and long term system-wide reliability. He also will work with local elected officials, labor representatives, community and business leaders to address their concerns.

"The appointment of the Special Reliability Master is essential to keep the lights on for the long-term," said Maria Lynn Maruca, Executive Director of the Seaside Heights Business Improvement District. "We are thankful for the short-term measures put in place such as the emergency generators, but in order for our critical tourism trade to flourish, we need a long-term reliability plan. I am happy that the BPU and the Governor have moved forward to appoint an independent person with 40 years of electric industry service."

"The IBEW is very happy to have Pat Downes take on this important task of ensuring that JCP&L provides system-wide reliability to its customers. He has a great track record and there are few people that have as an extensive background in the electric industry as Mr. Downes," said Ed Stroup, President/Business Manager, IBEW, Local 1289, the union which represents JCP&L workers.

"Union members who have worked under Mr. Downes have universal praise for his skills and experience that will be essential for the task at hand, Stroup added. We are confident he will provide an independent and thoughtful advice to the BPU. We look forward to working with him."

Downes, a resident of Ridgewood, served as Vice President Delivery Operations Support with Public Service Electric & Gas in New Jersey from1999 until his retirement in January of this year. In this position, he managed the planning, engineering and the overall performance of electric and gas distribution systems. He had direct responsibility for the preparation and execution of a budget that exceeded one half billion dollars annually.

In 1997 and 1998, he worked for PSE&G Global as Chief Operating Officer and Director of two electric distribution companies serving approximately 400,000 customers in the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Downes, who joined PSE&G in 1961, has held several management and engineering positions with the utility involving design, project management, construction, industrial relations and operations. He holds a B.E.E. Degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College and a M.S. degree in Management from New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New Jersey.

"There is no one better qualified to serve in this capacity than Pat Downes," said Al Koeppe, president and Chief Operating Officer of PSE&G. "His technical expertise - developed during a 40-year career in both domestic and international electric distribution design and operations - is unique in our state.

Pat's work was recognized last year when PSE&G won the Reliability One Award' for most reliable utility in the Mid-Atlantic region, said BPU President Jeanne M. Fox. We're happy that he will continue to be of service to the people of New Jersey.

I thank Governor McGreevey for his confidence in my ability to meet this challenge, Downes said. We have an opportunity for the regulator and the utility to work together to improve the system. I look forward to developing a plan that will provide shore residents and businesses with better, more reliable electric service.

Downes' appointment is the latest is a series of actions undertaken by the Governor since the power outages took place.

McGreevey has met with senior executives from JCP&L and its parent company, FirstEnergy, resulting in a commitment from the utility to implement a series of immediate steps to ensure the reliability of its distribution system. The company also established program to address damage claims from businesses and individuals affected by the power outages.

The Governor also held a meeting in Lavallette to discuss the issue with residents, business owners and local officials. This meeting was followed by a formal public hearing last Friday, held by the BPU, and attended by FirstEnergy and JCP&L executives to hear directly from those impacted by the outages. The next public hearing will be August 26 at the American Legion in Seaside Heights.

The Attorney General's Office and the BPU will continue to follow the Governor's directive to investigate this outage and work to prevent a reoccurrence.

LUIS FLORES NAMED TO WOODEN AWARD PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN TEAM

Senior Guard One of 50 Division I Players Honored

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 7, 2003) - Senior guard Luis Flores (New York, NY) was one of 50 NCAA Division I men's basketball players selected to the 2003 Wooden Award Preseason All-American team, as announced by the National Preseason Selection Committee.

Flores, a two-time First Team All-MAAC performer, earned the conference's Player of the Year Award last season after averaging 24.6 points per game. He led the Jaspers to a 23-7 overall record and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1995. Flores also became the third Manhattan player ever to win the coveted Haggerty Award at the Annual NIT/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Awards Dinner.

Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation's best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his university that he is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Previous winners include such notables as Michael Jordan ('84), Larry Bird ('79), Tim Duncan ('97) and last year's recipient, T.J. Ford ('03).

Huguenots attend clinic for second year
By Michael DiPiazza

The high school wrestling season won't begin for another four months, but don't tell that to the New Rochelle Huguenots.

Last week, a good portion of the New Rochelle team participated in a clinic coordinated by coach Jim Guccione. It was the second straight year the Huguenots gathered for a week in the summer.

The team can also be found perfecting its moves every Wednesday night during the summer months.

"Many of our kids go to camps. The problem is we don't see what's taught," Guccione said, "and there is no follow-up. Not that the camp is bad - it's usually a great experience. This way, we get to teach and pick and choose who we want to come."

In an effort to prevent his wrestlers from missing out on perfecting a move that could be crucial once the season starts, Guccione brought in college coaches from the area to run the clinic under his supervision.

Guccione said not all of his wrestlers can afford to go to wrestling camp.

"So this gives every kid an equal opportunity to get more information and to get better," he said.

The first night, Hunter College coach Bob Gaudenzi came in, while former high school and college wrestler-turned-referee Matt Abbety joined the group the second night.

Also slated to give a clinic was Carl Bennet, the director of physical education at Manhattan College.

Senior Eric Fama, who just returned from a clinic run at West Point, said that going to different camps helps him learn different techniques.

"If you can pick up something from every coach, you can become a better wrestler," he said.

The owner of a 101-31 record, Fama was the first member of Guccione's children's wrestling program to make the varsity squad.

Having wrestled since he was 10, Fama made varsity as an eighth-grader.

"You want to show the coaches all the new techniques you learned," said Fama when asked what he brings back to the team. "And help improve the old techniques that we had."

Guccione's idea definitely paid off as 10 New Rochelle wrestlers qualified for the Section 1 meet.

"We saw great improvements on an individual basis," he said.

HEADLINE: OU's Bookout will play for NIT All-Star team
BYLINE: John Rohde; Staff Writer
DATELINE: NORMAN

Oklahoma two-sport standout Kevin Bookout has returned to basketball as a member of the NIT All-Stars and will play eight games in the Bahamas beginning next week.

Bookout was a member of the Big 12 All-Freshman basketball team last season and also earned All-America status in the shot put last spring. In basketball, Bookout led the Sooners in rebounding (5.9), averaged 9.4 points, started 33 of 34 games and led the Big 12 in field-goal percentage at .587.

In track, he threw a personal-best 61 feet, 4 inches at the NCAA championships in June and was the only freshman in the event to earn All-America honors.

Bookout had received an invitation to the USA Basketball Pan American Games training camp, but was unable to participate because of an algebra class scheduling conflict.

"I'm really excited," said Bookout, who returned to basketball three weeks ago. "I haven't gotten to play basketball most of the summer. It'll be nice to go play somewhere.

"I'm going to try to go out there, be real aggressive and get a lot of rebounds. Coach (Kelvin Sampson) wants me to lead the team in rebounds and get where I can score a little more consistently on the block."

The 6-foot-8 Bookout said he has lost 15 pounds since the end of track season and now weighs 275.

Bookout leaves today and will join fellow all-stars John Blackgrove (Fordham), Taliek Brown (Uconn), Keydren Clark (St. Peter's), Tim Frost (Utah), Wendell Gibson (Hofstra), Daryll Hill (St. John's), Greg Jenkins (Iona), J.C. Mathis (Michigan), Peter Mulligan (Manhattan), Sean Munson (Wagner) and Kirk Snyder (Nevada).

The team will be coached by former Manhattan College and New Jersey Nets (ABA) player George Bucci, who also played 13 years in the Italian Professional League, where he was a seven-time all-star.

WGA tournament results in two breakthrough wins
Sam Weinman
The Journal News

CROTON-ON-HUDSON - Jason Monroe's entire golf career can be divided into distinct stages. Time was he'd show up at area qualifying tournaments and be lucky to break 90. Before long, he was breaking 80. A few weeks ago, in a Met Amateur qualifier, the 34-year-old Fenway Golf Club member shot 66.

"It's been a consistent growth," Monroe said. "And the trend has continued nicely."

Apparently so, because yesterday Monroe walked away from Hudson National Golf Club with a win in The Journal News/WGA Tournament of Champions. Against 55 other area club champions, Monroe's 1-under-par 70 made him the only player to break par.

"It's all about getting over humps," said Monroe, who claimed a two-stroke win over Westchester Hills' Chris Damiano. "The name of the game in golf is confidence, and this adds confidence."

Monroe wasn't alone in that regard. Scarsdale Golf Club's Helena Rhee won the women's division with a 6-over 77, one stroke ahead of Blue Hill's Mary Barber and Century's Barbara Israel.

As was the case with Monroe, it was the biggest career victory for Rhee, who said she didn't give much consideration to winning until she stood over a birdie putt on the par-3 second hole, her 17th hole of the day. After hitting her approach shot to 11 feet, she realized a birdie would likely put her in contention.

"Then I got so nervous," she said. "When I got so close, I started to think about it."

The result was a four-putt and a double-bogey 5. Little did she know at the time, however, that she still had a chance. Admittedly short off the tee, Rhee said it was her play around the greens that propelled her - that and a promising start. On her first hole of the day, the par-4 fourth, she stuck an 8-iron to about 2 feet.

"I knew then it would be a good day," she said.

Monroe had reason to be just as upbeat. On a day when several notable area players struggled, the Purchase resident hardly broke stride, birdieing two of his last four holes to finish in red numbers.

If anything, it was evidence that his game may be peaking at the most opportune time. Along with the Tournament of Champions yesterday, the Purchase resident has a U.S. Amateur qualifier today and the Met Amateur beginning on Thursday.

"My mind-set was two-fold," Monroe said. "One was to win, the other was to prepare for this week."

A year after qualifying for his first U.S. Amateur, Monroe naturally wants to find a way back. Again, it's a matter of stages. Last year at Oakland Hills, Monroe struggled with an 80 and a 77. Now that he's been through it once, though, he has aspirations of a better showing.

"It was my first time, so it was nerve-wracking, but nonetheless it was an incredible experience," Monroe said. "I tried to keep it at a very enjoyable level."

Meanwhile, Damiano, his closest competitor, got off to a birdie-birdie start before giving a few strokes back the rest of the way. The former Westchester Amateur champion, who has one semester left at Manhattan College, said he has been consistent off the tee as of late, but has struggled from inside 100 yards. Once he finishes school, he intends to head to a IMG-run golf school in Florida to prepare for a pro career.

"It's there but it's not there," Damiano said of his short game. "It comes and goes. It's hard for me because I have such a long, lanky swing. That's what I need to work on."

If Damiano wasn't the longest player in the field yesterday, he was second only to Alexei Kovalev, the Rangers' winger who is also the club champion at Willow Ridge in Harrison. Length was an asset at times for Kovalev, but it also worked against him. Just 2-over through 10 holes, the 30-year-old Russian had just 100 yards in for his third shot on the par-5 ninth hole. His approach, however, landed well over the green and into the heavy rough. Taking four shots just to get out of it, Kovalev took a 10 on the hole and finished with an 86.

Good Afternoon, John

            1. Now you know - from reading Dr. Heckman's problems - why I became a spook. I cannot stand any bureaucracy...USN, BoE of NYC, IRS, Auto Insurance Cos, you name it. I was once told by a GS 16 in the Civil Service commission that my Veteran's Preference was immoral! He is a friend, I am godfather to his son. He is also a graduate of MC who told me that he does not want to receive JJ which is why I will not use his name. Needless to say, he was too young for WWII, in college for Korea and too old for 'Nam. Now you also know why the anti-gun nuts get so much active and sub-rosa aid and assistance from the Federal and State bureaucracies. (My spell-checker is away, so please excuse my fat finger disease).

            2. I will answer the apostate brother and the poor chap who lost his wife another time. Please, keep up the good work, even though the monks must hate you for calling attention to their failings as you do so gently.

Regards, Bob Helm (Arts'51)

P.S. I have run into a very small part of Dr. Heckman's problems but being a spook, I have (or so people believe) the means and the contacts to disturb them if they disturb me too much.

Hi John,

I read your response to the newly appointed PIO, Melanie Farmer, at alma mater. Another way to get the MC name out in the public's eye would be to send out to the various newspapers the names of the students in the subscription area who have made the dean's List. Even up here in the wilds of Vermont, the local students' names are published and recognized and the college name is in the paper. I have asked the PR department at alma mater if they do this and was told no, not enough time. But if a parent submitted the necessary info to the college, they would get it in the local papers. Well, I have requested that this be done 2 times so far this year and my daughter's name has yet to appear.

But if Brother Scanlon needs money for another worthwhile college project, we receive the letters and follow up phone calls and/or e-mails in no time. I just wish that someone at the alma mater, whoever that may be, take into account the requests of the parents and alumni/ae and not just when it comes to fund raising. Guess I'm also cranky this morning.

Good luck in your job search and thanks for all your efforts in producing JJ. Regards, Rich Kaufmann, MP '64 MC '68

[JR: Well us "68 cranks" have to stick together. Search is going, slowly, but going. The effort is made worthwhile when people seem to enjoy it. That makes it fun. Once it stops being fun, well that another day. In talking to an ill in-law, I coined a phrase "Don't borrow tomorrow's trouble." Meaning don't anticipate future problems that may never come to pass. While I'm not Ben Franklin, maybe that applies here. ]

Hi John,

From what I have heard, your newsletter sounds like it has been a great resource for our fellow alumni.  I have actually been unsuccessful in gaining access to the online alumni webpage.  Despite multiple emails asking the department to include me, it has not happened.  Therefore, it would be nice to keep up to date with our fellow Jaspers through your newsletter.

I actually heard about the newsletter through another alumnus who forwarded  some information from your newsletter about a recent marriage celebration. She gave us your email address and said to contact you if we were interested in the newsletter.  However, I am unsure how she initially came across your publication.

But once again, thank you for your prompt response, and I will be sure to take the time to read through your hard work!!

Dear John,

Just a note to let you know that once again the Alumni of the Capitol District sponsored Day at the Races at Saratoga was a sell out. Despite the rain 170 Jaspers and their friends spent an enjoyable afternoon at that beautiful track. Some may even have left with a dollar or two more than they came with! (Not me!), This was followed by a reception and dinner sponsored by Bill Chandler, the immediate past president of the Alumni Society, at the Inn At Saratoga. It was truly a great day and we are getting accustomed to the rain at the track, as it has rained 3 out of the last to 4 times we were there. I also wish to report that the singing after dinner has not improved.

After dinner some Jaspers resolved to get together at the Manhattan Businessmen's Retreat which will be held the weekend of September 20th at the Cardinal Spellman Retreat House in Riverdale. This year we look forward to being joined by Brother Thomas and Prof John Wilcox from the College. It should be a great weekend, John you should try and join us there

[JR: Great report. But, I have "vote" to go with the "young" Jaspers. I have added it to the calendar for reference but "retreats" aren't my thing. To quote the movie "Patton" when asked about retreating to regroup, "I don't like to pay for the same ground twice." The essence of a good field commander is SWOT – strengths, weaknesses, observations, and threats – and action. I am not that philosophical or contemplative. You have to have the vocation for that stuff. But, I hope everyone finds what they need there. Besides what would happen to Jottings if I took time off?]

Subject: Help for alum looking for law job in DC

In response to a question about getting a law job "out of town", a couple of hints.

1.  Reciprocity.  Many law schools have arrangements with others for use of career services offices.    For example, Fordham alumni in Washington DC might have access to Georgetown's office/resources, and GU law alumni might have access to Fordham's.  Call your alma mater's career office to find out where you can go in a given city. You can often use your own and others even if you graduated years ago.  N.b. that certain dates etc may be blocked out, etc.

2.  Alumni offices.  (1) get an alumni directory – it will likely list alums by geography, field, etc.  (2) contact the alumni office to see if there is an alumni "chapter" in your new city - many have chapters in most of the large cities.  (A Notre Dame chapter in San Francisco, for example.)  (3) direct assistance: sometimes the alumni director may be inclined to give you a lead on the phone - "bankruptcy lawyer in Providence? actually I do know one... call Scott at Dewey Cheatham..."  This may require you to get through some sort of "screening" - the alum dir is likely connecting you to a friend.  Many alum dirs will not do this at all without a personal meeting with you - some not even then. It might be worth a trip to the alma mater for a few intros/handshakes, if feasible.

(Hint: in some cases you may have better luck with the development/advancement office than with the alumni office.)

(Hint: you also can likely guess which profs keep good tabs on former students - if you had one - even if s/he doesn't remember you, call anyway...).

3.  The local legal newspaper.  Most cities have a weekly or biweekly one with info on who's hiring, the market in general, etc.

4.  LexisNexis.  Search the lawyer-locater site for alumni in your practice field by geography, or for partners at specific firms, etc.   marhub.com also used to work - don't know now.  Another law-jobs website called "the vault" or something.

5.  Placement firms.  Seek advice on the best ones in your area, if you can.  N.b. that NALP is NOT a placement firm, but may have online resources that are helpful.  Some pages at nalp.org require membership, your alma mater's career ofc might help; nalpdirectory.com is free.

Good luck!

COPYRIGHTS

Copyrighted material belongs to their owner. We recognize that this is merely "fair use", appropriate credit is given and any restrictions observed. The CIC asks you to do the same.

All material submitted for posting becomes the sole property of the CIC. All decisions about what is post, and how, are vested solely in the CIC. We'll attempt to honor your wishes to the best of our ability.

A collection copyright is asserted to protect against any misuse of original material.

PRIVACY

Operating Jasper Jottings, the "collector-in-chief", aka CIC, recognizes that every one of us needs privacy. In respect of your privacy, I will protect any information you provide to the best of my ability. No one needs "unsolicited commercial email" aka spam.

The CIC of Jasper Jottings will never sell personal data to outside vendors. Nor do we currently accept advertisements, although that may be a future option.

DISCLAIMER

This effort has NO FORMAL RELATION to Manhattan College!

This is just my idea and has neither support nor any official relationship with Manhattan College. As alumni, we have a special bond with Manhattan College. In order to help the College keep its records as up to date as possible, the CIC will share such information as the Alumni office wants. To date, we share the news, any "new registrations" (i.e., data that differs from the alumni directory), and anything we find about "lost" jaspers.

QUALIFICATION

You may only subscribe to the list, only if you have demonstrated a connection to Manhattan College. This may require providing information about yourself to assert the claim to a connection. Decisions of the CIC are final. If you do provide such personal information, such as email, name, address or telephone numbers, we will not disclose it to anyone except as described here.

CONNECTING

Should you wish to connect to someone else on the list, you must send in an email to the list requesting the connection. We will respond to you, so you know we received your request, and send a BCC (i.e., Blind Carbon Copy) of our response to your target with your email address visible. Thus by requesting the connection, you are allowing us to share your email address with another list member. After that it is up to the other to respond to you. Bear in mind that anything coming to the list or to me via my reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu address is assumed to be for publication to the list and you agree to its use as described.

Should some one wish to connect with you, you will be sent a BCC (i.e., Blind Carbon Copy) of our response as described above. It is then your decision about responding.

We want you to be pleased not only with this service. Your satisfaction, and continued participation, is very important to all of us.

REQUESTING YOUR PARTICIPATION

Please remember this effort depends upon you being a reporter. Email any news about Jaspers, including yourself --- (It is ok to toot your own horn. If you don't, who will? If it sounds too bad, I'll tone it down.) --- to reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu. Please mark if you DON'T want it distributed AND / OR if you DON'T want me to edit it.

I keep two of the “Instant Messengers” up: Yahoo "reinkefj"; and MSN T7328215850.

Or, you can USMail it to me at 3 Tyne Court Kendall Park, NJ 08824.

INVITING ANY JASPERS

Feel free to invite other Jaspers to join us by dropping me an email.

PROBLEMS

Report any problems or feel free to give me feedback, by emailing me at reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu. If you are really enraged, or need to speak to me, call 732-821-5850.

If you don't receive your weekly newsletter, your email may be "bouncing". One or two individual transmissions fail each week and, depending upon how you signed up, I may have no way to track you down, so stay in touch.

FINAL WORDS THIS WEEK

If Someone Hands You a Lemon, Get a Permit
by Paul Hein

=== <begin quote> ===

You probably don’t know the name Avigayil Wardein, but you might have heard of the six-year-old girl in Naples, Florida, who was busted for operating a lemonade stand without a permit. Avigayil is that girl. She sells lemonade for 50 cents per plastic cup, and has a jar for tips, to boot.

=== <end quote> ===

Unfortunately, the new third leg of capitalism -- you know capital and labor – has reared its ugly head "regulation"! I think that every time the regulators get stupid it gives us a glimpse into what America is becoming. Why does this little girl need anything from the State to "permit" her to do anything? Government sticks its nose into every facet of our life. We need to push back!

Curmudgeon

And that’s the last word.
