This is why 12-step programs begin with a declaration, or creed. This creed is posted on AA websites, but more to my point here, on the Web page of AA's parallel organization for teenage children of alcoholics. The children know the confession well, and are aware of its healing power, before they reach adulthood. In this sense, they have an advantage over the rest of us.

We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.

Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Poor Bill. How the proud are laid low. I had heard about the 12 steps but never had read them. I took this article as an opportunity to do so. I thought everyone might like to see them once. Hopefully, I won't have to reread them when I am flat on my back, like Bill has had to. But, I don't think that will happen because I don't see myself as a great moral authority. More like the Buddhist on the journey to enlightenment. I do appreciate my own failings and this weekly opportunity to listen to my fellow alums. Ideally, I can learn the dangers of the ego before I come to the end of my trek. Maybe this read gives us all a lift that we are doing OK.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

DISTRIBUTION: TO TECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS EDITORS
HEADLINE: Magfusion Appoints New Board Member; Former Verizon Vice Chairman, Fred Salerno; High Calibre Appointment Rounds Out World-Class Management Team as Company Moves Into Commercialisation of Product
DATELINE: CHANDLER, Ariz., May 14

Magfusion, Inc.(TM) (formerly Microlab), a leading developer of RF MEMS-based products, today announced the appointment of Fred Salerno to its board of directors.  Salerno most recently served as vice chairman and chief financial officer (CFO) of Verizon, where he retired after over thirty-seven years of experience in strategic planning, business development, mergers and finance.

"Fred's depth of experience in the telecommunications industry is a tremendous asset to Magfusion as we begin to enable exciting new developments in wireless LANs wireless handsets, base stations and other wireless applications with our RF MEMS switch technology," said Ben Naskar, CEO and president of Magfusion.  "We are delighted to add yet another highly respected, seasoned veteran to our world-class management team."

Salerno served as a lead negotiator in three of the most significant mergers in business history: the 1997 merger of Bell Atlantic and NYNEX, Bell Atlantic's merger with GTE, and the combination of the U.S. wireless assets of Bell Atlantic and Vodafone into the country's largest wireless provider, Verizon Wireless.  He also directed Bell Atlantic's successful efforts to realize the annual expense savings, capital efficiencies and revenue gains resulting from the merger with NYNEX.

"It is clear that Magfusion is well positioned with its innovative technology to take on a leadership position in the RF MEMs market," said Fred Salerno.  "I see tremendous growth opportunity for the company and I am looking forward to contributing to its success."

In addition to serving as a member of the board of Magfusion, Salerno also sits on the boards of AVNET, Inc., Akamai Technologies, Bear Stearns Company, Inc., Consolidated Edison, Inc., D&B, Lynch Interactive Corporation, Manhattan College and Viacom, Inc.

Magfusion is uniquely poised to replace traditional electromechanical switches and relays with its innovative use of magnetic technology and the application of semiconductor processes to build devices with moving structures.  This magnetic MEMS approach yields a switch that remains latched in state with zero power consumption, and will play a role in next generation wireless applications that require a high performance, low power consumption switching technology.

The announcement comes as Magfusion prepares to move out of the prototype stage and into mass production.

About Magfusion, Inc.

Magfusion(TM), a leading developer of micro electromechanical systems (MEMS), is developing RF MEMS solutions that improve performance, decrease power consumption and reduce overall complexity in a variety of wireless devices, test equipment, telecommunications systems and other products.  Using patent-pending electromagnetic manufacturing technology in its research and development facility in Phoenix, Arizona, Magfusion has produced the only RF MEMS magnetic latching switch.  Magnetic latching technology creates a switch that requires significantly less power and uses less voltage than other RF MEMS switches under development today.  For more information, visit www.magfusion.com .

COMMENTARY

Buscaglia is making sure the son also rises

5/12/2003

Sal Buscaglia, left, and son Charlie became a package deal at Robert Morris of Pittsburgh.

By BOB DICESARE

All this time it seemed nothing mattered to Sal Buscaglia other than coaching women's basketball. He'd spend night after night holed up at school, dissecting game tapes until his eyes glazed like doughnuts, and then he'd call it a morning and crash on the office couch. He'd break away from his family on Christmas Day to telephone prospective recruits, a gesture intended to show those players, if not his family, how deeply he cared. And, once the season concluded, contact with Buscaglia was best made by cell phone as he scoured the athletic landscape in search for unmined diamonds of talent.

He's 49. And, yes, he's divorced.

There's at least one thing that gives Buscaglia the same rush he gets from coaching. There's his boy, Charlie. And the father showed last week to what extent he'll go to maintain a working relationship with a son who shares his obsession for the game.

Buscaglia resigned from Manhattan College, a program he built into a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference power, the team he just took to the NCAA Tournament, and signed a four-year deal with Robert Morris University of Pittsburgh, which last season won once in 27 games.

The first reaction was to chalk up the move as vintage Buscaglia. Cut from the high school team at defunct Bishop Fallon, he started the women's program at Hilbert in 1977 with a background in accounting and Catholic Youth Organization hoops. The Lady Hawks lost their inaugural game, 107-17. They never scored more than 21 points in their debut season. But they were an established national force, perennial regional champions, when he departed for the University at Buffalo 12 years later.

Buscaglia kept winning at UB, 139 times in eight seasons, his successes including a 23-6 record in 1991-92, the program's first year in Division I. UB was on firm footing, upgrading to the Mid-American Conference, when he up and left for Manhattan, vowing to revitalize a program with all of 66 wins in six seasons. Buscaglia won 79 games in five.

So when he jumped to Robert Morris it seemed Buscaglia had once again grown antsy, yearned for a change.

"I am the type of person that really does like challenges," he said last week, by cell phone. "I don't have any expectations in my career unless I was attracted to a big-name program with a chance to win a national title. My goals are realistic. Get a team to the NCAA Tournament, maybe steal a game."

But restless he wasn't. Not this time. He would have remained at Manhattan if the school had allowed him to retain Charlie, a student assistant on Buscaglia's staff. The college had made it clear that hiring Charlie, once he graduated, would conflict with its policy against nepotism. Buscaglia hoped Manhattan would relent, especially after the team won the MAAC and advanced to the NCAAs.

"It's the thing that put me over the edge," Buscaglia said. "Loyalty to my son is extremely important. He was a student assistant and worked very, very hard. He's one of the main reasons we got to the NCAA Tournament. He was the main reason Rosalee Mason, our best player, was at the school. I wasn't willing to break away from someone who got us to the tournament and is a very good coach. The kid worked endless hours. So I mulled it over for a long time and looked to see if other schools were interested."

Dr. Susan Hofacre, director of athletics at Robert Morris, was puzzled and intrigued upon finding Buscaglia's resume among those of the applicants.

"The first question I asked, naturally, is why would he want to make that move?" Hofacre said. "It's not what I would consider a logical career step."

Buscaglia explained. Reclamation is his forte. So long as the commitment was mutual, he could turn Robert Morris around. But he could take the job only if Charlie came along. Package deal. Non-negotiable.

"He's a proud dad," Hofacre said. "It's clear he loves his son very much and that he wants to get him started on a career as a basketball coach. It's clear he loves his daughter (Deanna) very much, as well, although for obvious reasons we spent more time talking about Charlie. So, yes, there were a lot of discussions as to whether we could make that happen."

Five seconds remained in last season's MAAC title game when father and son locked eyes on the sideline. The outcome was decided. Manhattan finally was headed to The Dance.

"We're actually going to get it done," Buscaglia said to Charlie.

"I told you, Dad," Charlie replied, "that I'd get you there."

They cried. And then, together, they climbed the ladder and cut down the net.

Dear John,

This is a particularly good jottings.

Is there someone I can send a donation to for Sister Maryanne Pierre in Baghdad?

My wife attended St. William of York School in Baltimore where Sr. Elizabeth Magdalen (Obit 2) taught in the later part of her career.

Thanks for the good work you are doing.

Sister:

I featured the CNN story about Sister Maryanne Pierre at http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003/iraq/heroes/nun.html in an electronic newsletter that I send to about a thousand of my fellow alumni of Manhattan College in New York. A few of us would like to help the good sister financially in her mission. Is she part of your organization? Or, in the alternative, can you point me in the correct direction.

Thanks,
John

Dear John:

Thanks for your continued efforts to keep Manhattan alumni in touch.  You seem to be feeling better which is good news.

I particularly liked the story about Sister Pierre.  I had missed it because like you I try to avoid the "agenda networks".  However, if this war did anything, it may have begun to turn the tide in the major media's liberal bias.  Many of the embeds as well as the public got a real exposure to the military and to what the war was about without the filters of post-60's profs, news editors, and pols.  There's a great story by an "embedded" journalist for Time magazine in this week's Weekly Standard telling it like it was not like the NYTimes covered it.  The Standard's May 5th issue has a devastating parody of the Times.  It features the November 11, 1781 issue of "Ye Newe York Times" whose headline blares "Three Weeks After Yorktown, Still No Constitution Ready" and R.W.Apple's analysis , "Triumph Over British Empire Was Easy Part: Desire to Return to British Sovereigntye Becoming Widespread".

Sadly, we lost two honest journalists in David Bloom to pulmonary emboli and the other journalist (whose name escapes me) to enemy fire.

Stay well and happy.

[JR: Liked that Yorktown jibe! ]

I simply do not understand why you continue to be fixated on someone who you obviously have no respect for, in  spite of eight years of peace and prosperity. It seems unhealthy .

What does this have to do with MC or bring a Jasper?

"I'm not a fan of CNN. It has admitted its dishonesty in reporting from Bagdad to keep its presence there. And, during the Clinton disgrace, I agreed that it was, and continues to be, the "Clinton News Network".

[JR: Well I think it has a lot about being a Jasper. I hold us to a higher standard. As much as I applauded Rudy for the 9/11 efforts; I excoriated him for his personal life. As a public scandal. I try not to be "fixated" on anything. I would quibble with "peace and prosperity". When the leader of our country leads us to far lower standards, I think every Jasper should not be deluded into thinking that standards have changed. I wasn't particularly focusing on Bill, or H, when I referred to CNN. I was pointing out a positive example – as I like to do in the first part of the newsy letter -- from them that the good nun represented. As a matter of principle, I think that Bill's inattention to foreign terrorism was a factor in emboldening our enemies. His interest in the definition of "is" was a signal to business leaders that lying was OK. The continued disabling of the American population by inducing them to look to the Federal Government instead of to themselves belies the "prosperity". Now I am not a fan of either Big Government party (as readers here well know). But, I am a fan of Jaspers leading a moral resurgence, like we were taught in our undergraduate days. We have to evaluate everything for "reliability", honesty, and where it is taking us. IMHO. And that is how it ties together here in our "virtual Plato's cave". I am of course interested in anything our fellow Jaspers have to say in response, rebuttal, or direction. ]

Bear in mind that anything coming to the list or to me via my reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu address is assumed to be for publication to the list and you agree to its use as described.

Should some one wish to connect with you, you will be sent a BCC (i.e., Blind Carbon Copy) of our response as described above. It is then your decision about responding.

FINAL WORDS THIS WEEK

http://www.washingtontimes.com/commentary/20030511-95772825.htm

=== <begin quote> ===

School choice is the answer. If the politicians and unions stand in their way, parents, who care more about their children than a politician ever will, are going to demand, and get, the schools they want and their children need. That's the message from Mayor Williams' turnaround.

Cal Thomas is a nationally syndicated columnist

=== <end quote> ===

Now Cal! Do you really feel that the left, and the right, are going to give up the ability to indoctrinate the future voters in the value of Big Government? Not any time soon. Remember the Bigger Government Party (Democrat) and the Slightly Smaller Government Party (Republican) will never return your children to you unbrainwashed. When I heard the drivel my nephews and nieces were taught, I am amazed they can even tie their shoelaces. My position has always been, you have 'em, you pay to educate them. Just like you pay to feed 'em, clothe 'em, or entertain them. Haul 'em to whatever school you choose too. Cause the big yellow buses hold up traffic and the government screws that up too. We will have to have a revolution to put the genie back in the bottle. Did you ever see what questions you had to answer in order to get a high school diploma back in the earlier days? Mow listen to Jay-walkings, or conduct your own, and you too will see why we need a revolution! It not just the taxes that are revolting; it's the results as well.

Curmudgeon

And that’s the last word.
