"Years ago, Brad Wolgamott met a man who changed his life. Now a retired, but still young, multimillionaire, Wolgamott is trying to have the same kind of impact on children from his community. A baseball diamond, rock-climbing wall, rope bridge and trout pond are part of the environment he's created to help kids reach their own dreams."
Yes, we all stand on the backs of those who came before us. I wish I was in a position to do something as neat as Brad. I'll have to try to find my own "field".
Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

January 2, 2002 - NEW YORK, N.Y. J.A. Jones Construction Co., one of the nation's leading providers of private and public construction services based in Charlotte, N.C., announced today that Milo E. Riverso has been named president of its New York division, J.A. Jones Construction Group.
Previously, as vice president of J.A. Jones Construction Group, Riverso, 40, was part of the team managing the company's private and public construction projects while participating in business development opportunities in the greater New York area, including New Jersey and Westchester County
"Milo is a proven, energetic leader with respected experience in the metropolitan New York construction market," said John D. Bond III, president of the firm's parent company, J.A. Jones Construction Co. "He has the important set of skills we're looking for to help lead our company forward."
Before coming to J.A. Jones, Riverso served as president and chief executive officer of the New York School Construction Authority, where he was credited with dramatic improvements in the organization's performance and productivity. Riverso replaces the departing president, Hal Parmelee, who has served in the position on an interim basis for the last two years.
"One of the keys to our plans for growth in this market will be to leverage the full potential of our strong customer relationships," Riverso said. "I know that our accomplished professional staff will help us execute these plans while maintaining our reputation for quality. We are clearly prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future."
Riverso earned a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College and a Master's and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. He is a registered professional engineer in New York and New Jersey, and has served as Adjunct Professor at Manhattan College, Purdue University and New York University. Riverso has received several prestigious awards, most recently the Outstanding Engineer in Construction from the Westchester Division of the National Society of Professional Engineers; and the Metropolitan Civil Engineer of the Year from the Metropolitan Section of the American Society of Professional Engineers. He is a member of several committees and boards, including the Committee on Public Building at the New York Building Congress and the Construction Management Association of America.

POMPEY WINS GOLD MEDAL AT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES
Former Jasper Breaks Guyana’s 68-Year Medal Drought
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – Former Manhattan College track and field Olympian Aliann Pompey ’01 of Guyana clinched a gold medal in the 400m finals at the XVII Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, England yesterday. The victory was not only a remarkable accomplishment for the 24-year-old but it was also her country’s first Commonwealth Games athletics gold medal since Phil Edwards won the 880 yard event in 1934.
On Saturday in the semi-finals, Pompey was slow to release in the starting blocks but would increase her speed to set a new national record with a time of 51.34 seconds for a second place finish. In the finals, the 2000 Olympian roared to victory as the Manchester crowd watched in amazement as she surpassed the favorite Scotland’s Lee McConnell and Jamaica’s Sandie Richards in the final seconds of the race.
“For the last 20 meters my eyes were kind of closed. I couldn’t see anything. I was going by the crowd’s reaction,” said Pompey.
The silver medal was awarded to McConnell (51.68 seconds) and Richards received the bronze medal (51.79 seconds).
Pompey currently resides in New York City and she continues to train at Manhattan College under the direction of sprinter coach Joe Ryan.

Warfighters have Romano's total
support.
by Rhonda Elmore
New 75 ABW Commander Col. Sebastian V. Romano III took command of the 75th Air Base Wing June 26 and he is ready for the job. In fact, Romano has set goals for the 75th ABW.
"It's very early on, but I do have goals for the 75th ABW," said Romano. "My number one goal is to prepare our warriors, the folks we deploy by making sure that they are the best trained, best equipped members we can possibly make them to serve our country wherever they need to go."
He said that would be his goals for the 75th ABW deploying overseas. Romano also has goal for the wing at Hill AFB. He explained, "we're going to provide the best support we can to Team Hill and that includes the ALC, 388th, and 419th Fighter Wings and the numerous other organizations that make up Team Hill.
Romano hails from New York. He attended Manhattan College, NY, earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He later earned a Master of Arts in Business Administration and Management from Webster University. Romano earned his commission to second lieutenant through Air Force ROTC while attending Manhattan College.
From 1979-80, Romano went through pilot training at Columbus AFB, MS. It was there that he decided that he didn't really want to fly jets for a living. From May 1980 to June 1983, Romano was a civil engineering officer, chief of environmental and contract planning; chief of resources and requirements, 1st Civil Engineering Squadron, Langley AFB, Va.
June 1983-84, he was staff civil engineer, HQ Air Forces Iceland, Keflavik, Iceland. "It was my first time out of the United States," he said. From Iceland, Romano went back to Langley AFB, starting out as a facility requirements officer. Later he was special assistant to the deputy chief of staff civil engineering at HQ Tactical Air Command.
September 1987 Romano became the program manager, later chief, executive services division at HQ Air Force Base, the Pentagon, Veterans Administration, where he stayed for five years.
In August 1992, he attended Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, Ala. In July 1993, Romano became commander of the 617th Civil Engineering Squadron at Ramstein AB, Germany. In August 1995, he was back at Maxwell AFB attending Air War College.
Romano commanded the 100th Civil Engineering Squadron at RAF Mildenhall, United Kingdom. In August 1998 he became commander of the 305th Civil Engineering Squadron at McGuire AFB, N.J.
Prior to coming to Hill AFB he was the commander of the 12th Support Group, Randolph AFB, Texas, where he learned that there was life outside of civil engineering.
Curious about Utah, Romano drove here up through New Mexico "just so he could see Canyon Lands and Moab." While he is here he plans to take his family hiking and backpacking to see some Utah's most beautiful landscapes. Come winter, Romano will be on snow skis. "It's been a while since I've been on skis, but I can't wait to get back on them," he said.
In addition to getting to know Utah, Romano plans to get to know the communities surrounding the base. "This is another goal for me," he said, "I want to continue to foster the good relationships we have the local communities.
"It's very important for us to find ways to better help our communities and for them to help us here on the base.
"After I have been here longer, have gotten to know the people who work for me and know the local communities better, there will be other goals to work toward," Romano concluded.

Good Afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen:
1. Some of you know what's been happening; some don't, so I'll take it from the top.
2. Helen had been complaining of an intermittent pain in her right breast after our return from Panama. Finding a new OBGYN who took Medicare, was female and not only interested in baby factories took some time. When I returned from the toy show in Rochester, she told me that her new OBGYN had stated that "that lump belongs in a jar, not in your breast" and recommended a surgeon. He was on vacation but his young partner was not and the wheels of surgery began to turn. You ladies know the drill...all sorts of pictures, et al. Surgery was scheduled for Wednesday, 17 July, so I was going to Annapolis alone.
3. At 3:30 AM on July 5 - the day I was supposed to leave for Annapolis, the hot water system in the apartment upstairs let go, and the living room, hall and bathroom were drenched...all of Helen's computer equipment and much of our entertainment system was soaked. I never left for Annapolis; needless to say, as we spent the greater part of the day emptying the affected spaces and trying to figure out where to put stuff and how we were going to live in this mess. Trips to various and sundry medical offices, contacting insurance personnel and deciding about Dallas took up our time. For various and sundry reasons, I left for Dallas on Sunday, July 14th, arriving at the hotel about 1 PM, Dallas time. Upon checking in, I called home. Helen had gotten home about an hour before and was still groggy from the anesthesia. When I called later in the day, she was more or less alert, the lump was gone and we began our wait for the pathology report.
4. This report did not come back until this past Tuesday. Reason? The local lab could not decide which type of Cancer it was. So the 22.5 cm - 3/4" - item was sent to Vanderbilt U.'s Oncology lab which returned the verdict that there were2 - TWO - kinds of cancer in the lump. Simple, ordinary Breast Cancer and what appeared to be an evolvement into skin cancer. On Friday, July 9th, the surgeon and Helen agreed upon the following plan. An operation to isolate the "signal" lymph gland into which the cancer should have spread if it was going to spread. If it hasn't spread and he "got it all", all we will have to deal with are quarterly checkups. If it has begun to spread, a regular program of chemo and radiation therapy will be instituted.
5. I realize that I have probably told you more than you wanted to know but it has taken from July 17th until August 6th to find out about this situation and now we wait for the next phase - exploratory surgery.
6. My Lady and I will celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary two weeks from today - August 25th, 2002. We ask your prayers that all things will turn out okay. (I went to Dallas because I was told that she was not going to listen while I complained for the next 40 years that I didn't go because she was sick!).
7. Love to all and God Bless. Bob Helm

Hi John,
I noted that your recent "Final Thought" from Curmudgeon contained one of the three things we absolutely need to recapture our government from the partisans, political hacks, and pressure groups. You have called for a return to the Gold Standard, which should keep everyone honest, and make it nearly impossible for the congress critters to pay for their wealth redistribution and vote-buying schemes by just printing up more worthless Federal Reserve promissory notes. Even a return the Gold Standard may not be totally foolproof, since only the bi-metallic dime, quarter, half, and dollar coins have ridged edges. I'll bet that some crooked politician could still figure a way to shave some of the real metal from the edges of our copper pennies and nickel five-cent pieces.
However, in addition to re-instating the Gold Standard, I propose that we abolish the withholding tax and require every citizen to write out a check for the full amount of their tax on April 15th each year. Finally, we should change our annual Election Day to April 16th.
Keep up the good fight. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.
Regards,
Lou Apoldo

There hasn't been much debate during the summer months, so I thought I'd write to you on your "Final Thought" in last week's jottings.
Your last sentence said, "When one looks at where the terrorists are coming from and being created by, you don't see democracies".
If only that were true. Unfortunately, many of the terrorists that are dedicated to destroying the United States were actually born and raised in modern Europe (probably America too). The British press has recently stated that there are thousands of British born members of the Taliban/Al Qaeda. Mr. Moussaoui (can't spell his name) is French and, presumably, not the only French member of these organizations.
Terror has been wide-spread in Europe since the second world war despite the fact that all the nations of western Europe are democracies. I would love to believe that if we focused on "pushing the idea of freedom" that we would "dry up terrorism". But, there are many people who don't cherish freedom, who don't see it as an ideal. And, many of these people are coming out of western democracies.
John
[JR: Well, I think that if we had more democracies it would certainly dry up the supply of followers. It gives people an excuse. They would have to find a different cover story for their actions. Too many people here in the US are only focusing on “war”. War on this and war on that! It’s like they forget from generation to generation what wars cost. War merely enlarges the power of the state at the expense of freedom. We keep sticking our nose in for selfish purposes and not for a noble cause. Afghanistan is a notable example. I have not heard about free elections. Only about restoring an old monarch and not much of that either. If people are not willing to fight and die to change the government, then we should butt out. We can’t “give” them freedom; it can only be won by force of arms wielded by a dedicated citizenry. Throughout history there are many good examples of that principle in action. We need to be more careful about where we send our young men to die! Foreign adventures are not the right place IMHO.]

John,
Just a suggestion. When reporting the Jasper sports news, could you just put the college's sports link in your newsletter. I check their website almost daily and see the new sports postings.
This way anyone who wants to see the sports news can without having to scroll through it in jottings.
As I said, just a suggestion.
Rich Kaufmann Prep '64 MC '68
PS. The college website sure does need some new information. The current news link dates back to early '02 and late '01. I know you have nothing to do with the official site.
[JR: <1> Done. I only started reporting sports because some of our fellow alums wanted it. <> There are some at the college who read jottings so your comment may get some action. (But don’t count on it!) I an been asking that all material on the site carry a posting date in the links to it so one can determine what is new. Which has yet to happen.]

Hi, John,
The September issue of The Atlantic Monthly has an exceedingly well written piece entitled "American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center." It highlights the activities of many Manhattan alumni including Michael Burton whose new job you reported a couple weeks ago. Manhattan is the only school referenced and it clear Jaspers played a huge role. I understand Mike also received an Honorary Degree from Manhattan, one of the youngest people so honored. He might even be the youngest except for the late King Hussein of Jordan who I believe was in his early twenties when he received it.
You may wish to mention the article in a forthcoming Jottings.
Best wishes.
Bill
[JR: Good find about Atlantic Monthly. That would have
slipped by me. Jottings reported on him as Class of 1984 in Release1 at http://ferdinand_reinke.tripod.com/jasperjottings20020616.htm
from the College. Clearly he has made a dramatic contribution. I always lament
that we in the US don’t do big engineering projects anymore. The Japanese built
that island airport. The French the bullet train. The English
the Chunnel. But, we seemed to stop at the Hoover Dam. Maybe building
and unbuilding the WTC would qualify. But it doesn’t
seem big enough in my mind. Guess cause I didn’t have
to do it.]

[JR: We can only hope. What do you think of the Libertarian proposal for “instant runoffs”. You vote by placing the candidates in order with votes counted by ranking? Or, their Taxachussetts iniaitive to end the state income tax. You been very quiet lately. Have I not “enraged” you lately? I’ll try harder.]

9/11 LIGHTS ON!
PLEASE forward this email to everyone in your address book asking them to also forward it.
Please join us on 9/11.....................we have less than a month to get the word out all across this great land we love and call the United States of America. Let's see how powerful e-mail can be!
On Wednesday, September 11, 2002, everyone in the USA who will be driving a motor vehicle is asked to drive with their headlights on during daylight hours. Though no explanation is needed as to why we are commemorating September 11.....................we hope more importantly to pay respect to the victims of that day, show our nation's solidarity and show support for our men and women of the Armed Forces.
You can help by sending this e-mail on to others!
Remember......................9/11 LIGHTS ON!
[JR: I am not much on the maudlin. Perhaps each of us in our own way can think of something better. A prayer for our 19 alums wouldn’t hurt. Or, a significant donation to a favorite local charity. Or, thinking about how to remediate the event, it causes, and its effects. Or, personal dedication to making sure it doesn’t happen again. Lights seems corney cause it doesn’t “do” much and doesn’t “cost” much.]

Hi Don:
Well I hope you would approve of my efforts to bring our fellow alums together. I remembered the column when I went 64-68. When I asked around at the College, no one seemed to have a problem with me "re-cycling" the name. I have tried to recapture the feelings I remember in the column. I always enjoyed the camaraderie at Plato's cave. So that's what I am trying to do here.
You can read the recent ones at http://ferdinand_reinke.tripod.com/. And, or course, you are welcome to join the weekly distribution.

Game might have cost city record amount
Task force urged to pan ticket deal
By Norberto Santana Jr.
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
August 14, 2002
“The Chargers' opening exhibition game Saturday cost San Diego taxpayers $1.6 million, a possible single-game record under the 5-year-old ticket guarantee. That was the cost of buying 30,306 unsold tickets. Neither city nor Chargers' officials could say yesterday if that was the highest expenditure for a single game under the notorious deal.”
And who says the taxpayer doesn’t get the short end of
the stick any time government is involved. That’s what government is about,
right, welfare for for wealthy players and owners. Whatta joke!

And that’s the last word.
