Posthumous Medal of Honor goes to defiant POW

WASHINGTON (AP) --President Bush presented a posthumous Medal of Honor Monday to Army Capt. Rocky Versace, a Green Beret who defied his Viet Cong captors and was executed in 1965.

<extraneous deleted>

"The last time they heard his voice, he was singing 'God Bless America' at the top of his lungs," Bush said.

Versace was executed September 26, 1965. "Today we award Rocky Versace the first Medal of Honor given to an Army POW for actions taken during captivity in Southeast Asia," Bush said.

I read this and was very sad. Why did it take 37 years to give   this man his due?

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Manhattan College Crew has had its ups and downs over the years. Its members have persevered through it all. Boathouse fires, boat damage, motors at the bottom of the Harlem and, more recently, the trailering of boats to practice every single day. They had consistently given their all to the team, the evidence of which still shows in their daily lives. Manhattan College Crew Alumni have carried their yearning for excellence to the workplace and even to other rowing venues. They are lawyers, doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs. They have rowed with the New York Athletic Club, and helped lead that team to gold medals at the Nationals and Canadian Henley.

Michael D. Cryan
Co-chairman and chief operating officer
Homestead Village Inc.

Year company founded: 1997
Number of employees: 1,500 nationwide

Experience and background: Cryan was born in 1951 in New York. Prior to joining Homestead Village Inc., he worked for ITT Sheraton Corp. from 1986 to 1996, where his most recent position held was director, executive vice president and chief financial officer. Cryan was also with Arthur Andersen LLP, where he was a member of the Worldwide Hospitality Team focusing on profit improvement and specialty analysis for the hotel industry, as well as providing financial consulting services to real estate and hospitality clients.

Education: Bachelor's degree in biology from Manhattan College; MBA from Babson College (Mass.)

Hobbies: Golf, basketball and reading

Family matters: Wife Karen Marie and three children: Michael, Shawn and Kevin

Best advice ever given: Keep your life in balance -- family always comes first. There are many difficult choices to make in life, so don't lose sight of your long-term goals for short-term objectives.

Biggest contribution to my industry: Homestead Village, along with other purpose-built lodging companies, are in the process of proving that the extended-stay segment has both depth of demand and staying power to support the several companies who are aggressively developing the business.

Advice for someone entering my field: The hospitality industry is very demanding and exciting. Success should depend on getting diverse experience in areas such as rooms, food and beverage, sales, acquisitions and development. The key to success may well be the ability to maintain the discipline to operate a hotel as a business rather than an art form.

If not in my current position, I would like to be: Involved in retail or entertainment where the mixture of product and service standards is critical; I love the challenge of service industries.

ALPINE - The flag outside Borough Hall in Alpine is flying at half-staff in honor of Louis Cacace, the former borough tax assessor who died Tuesday at age 93.

Mr. Cacace was a lifelong resident of Alpine whose service to the town spanned nearly his entire life. From the time he joined the Alpine Fire Department as a young man to the day in July 1994 when he resigned as borough councilman at age 85, the name Cacace meant service to the people of Alpine. Mr. Cacace served in just about every capacity in borough government, from fire sub-code official, to member of the Planning Board, to emergency management coordinator. But it was as borough tax assessor, an office he held from 1954-89, that Mr. Cacace left his mark on the town. This was the period in Alpine's history when the borough was transformed from a small, sleepy town to a wealthy enclave of mansions.

Although he was only a part-time employee, Mr. Cacace routinely worked 40-hour weeks and even did assessments on weekends.

"Tax assessor for him was as much a labor of love as it was a paid position," said Mayor Paul H. Tomasko. "He put in many more hours than he was compensated for, in order to make sure that everyone paid their fair share of the 'freight,' as he liked to put it."

Mr. Cacace graduated from the Alpine Public School and later received a degree in engineering from Manhattan College. He was a draftsman for Curtiss-Wright Corp. in Wood-Ridge for 33 years. Among the projects he worked on was the design of the F-14 fighter plane for the U.S. Navy. In his spare time, Mr. Cacace was active in the Boy Scouts, serving as assistant scoutmaster for Tenafly Scout Troop 122.

Mr. Cacace stepped down as tax assessor in 1989, but it was not the end of his career as a public servant. In 1991, he was elected to the Alpine Borough Council as a Republican. During his tenure, he was believed to be the oldest elected councilman in the state.

He ended his career in public service with a flourish. He resigned his council seat in 1994 to protest what he called the inequitable property tax assessments in the borough, and the council's refusal to pay for a revaluation of all the land in Alpine.

"It annoys me to see these assessments are not equitable," Mr. Cacace told The Record upon his resignation. "But I've tried to change things for two years, and now I'm throwing in the towel."

Mr. Cacace is survived by a son, Richard L. of Alpine, and two sisters, Mary Mondella and Rena Parlapiano. His wife, Josephine DeStephano Cacace, is deceased.

Mass will be said Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Tenafly.

"In fact, as diocesan historian for so many years and as one who personally and intimately knew the history of the diocese almost from its very beginning, Msgr. Giglio will be sorely missed as a trusted confidant. From my first days in the diocese, he was able to assist me as well as challenge me."

Msgr. Giglio's accomplishments include two histories of the diocese, including an updated version that he completed this month on the day he was admitted to Our Lady of Lourdes.

Msgr. Giglio was born in New Brunswick, N.J., and graduated from Manhattan College in the Bronx in 1954. He attended Christ the King Seminary in Olean, N.Y., and Villanova University. He also served as principal at Camden Catholic High School, assistant in residence at Holy Maternity Church in Audubon and Christ the King Church in Haddonfield, secretary of the diocese's Office of Pastoral Planning, and a member of several diocesan boards, including the Vocation Advisory Board, Continuing Education and Spiritual Formation of Priests.

Msgr. Giglio also was a member of the National Pastoral Planning Conference, the South Jersey Religious Leaders Conference, the Planning Team for Family Ministry, and the Commission on Social Justice.

In 1975, he received the title of monsignor and was named diocesan coordinator for the Eucharistic Congress. Msgr. Giglio also served on the advisory board at St. Pius X Retreat House in Blackwood and was chaplain for the St. Mary Nursing Home in Cherry Hill.

He is survived by four cousins.

Liturgy of Reception of the Body will be celebrated by Msgr. Robert McDermott, pastor of St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral in Camden, at 9 a.m. today in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 642 Market St., Camden. A viewing will follow until 10:45 a.m. At 11 a.m., Bishop DiMarzio will celebrate the Mass of Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest at the cathedral.

TRIMPER ANNOUNCES BASEBALL SIGNINGS FOR 2002-03

RIVERDALE, NY - Head baseball coach Steve Trimper announced the signing of eight recruits who have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Manhattan College and play baseball beginning in the fall of 2002. The list of recruits includes right-handed pitchers Alex Narus (Wolcott, CT/Wolcott) and Steve Bronder (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa High School East), left-hander Josh Santerre (Essex Jct., VT/Essex) and infielders John Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY/Iona Prep) and John Maser (Queens, NY/C.W. Post). These five recruits join Trimper's three early signees, Kyle Wirtz (Branford, CT/Hopkins), Scott Wardell (Tabrnacle, NJ/Moorstown Friends) and Chris Cody (Brewster, NY/Brewster) to round out the 2002-03 recruiting class.

"With few returning pitchers from last year's team, it was a plus that we brought in six quality arms that can give us quality innings as freshmen," says Trimper. "Also, by upgrading our schedule with non-conference games against University of New Orleans, Tulane and Elon next year, we are going to need more quality pitchers to throw against better quality teams."

Santerre, who played for head coach Steve Ferreira of Essex High School in Vermont, captained his team to the State Tournament for the first time in school history. As a senior, Santerre hit .507 (34-67) with 25 RBI and 25 runs scored. He also stole a team best 13 bases and struck out only once in 67 plate appearances. On the mound, Santerre posted a perfect 9-0 record with 105 strikeouts over 54 innings. He allowed just two runs and gave up 14 hits on the season for a miniscule 0.13 ERA. For his career, Santerre owns a .424 batting average as well as a 19-1 record and a 0.75 ERA.

Narus is a product of Wolcott High School in Connecticut who earned four varsity letters under head coach Tary Scott. He accumulated a record of 23-6 with nine saves on the mound and led his team to the State Tournament all four years. Narus was selected as a Naugatuck Valley League All-Star as a junior after hitting .348 with two homeruns and nine RBI, while posting an 11-2 record and a 1.12 ERA on the mound. This past season, Narus was 6-1 with three saves and a 0.67 ERA. He also batted .400 with three homers and 20 RBI.

Fitzpatrick is a two-time All-City and All-Section pick, and was named to the All-Star team as a sophomore and a junior. As a senior, Fitzpatrick hit .618 with four homeruns and was named a Third Team High School All-American. An excellent student, Fitzpatrick has earned the 2002 Manhattan College LaSalle Award. "John is a strong kid that has the potential to be a great power hitter," says Trimper. "He is also very versatile where he can play first, third, or catch."

Maser, a transfer from C.W. Post, hit .250 with 34 basehits and 20 RBI as a freshman. A starter in 42 games at shortstop for the Pioneers, Maser scored 14 runs and struck out only 15 times in 136 at-bats. Defensively, Maser had a .947 fielding percentage at short, committing just eight errors in 152 chances. The Pioneers were 11-30-1 in 2002. "Maser will be able to help us out in the infield with his quality defensive skills," says Trimper. "Starting every game for Division I CW post as a freshman gave him the experience to come in here and help the program."

Bronder is a hard-throwing righty from Ballston Lake who had an excellent high school career at Shenendehowa High School East and will have an immediate impact in Manhattan's pitching rotation. As a senior, Bronder had a record of 6-2 with a 2.23 ERA for a team that was ranked as high as 14th in the country and No. 1 on the East Coast by USA Today. He also posted 53 strikeouts and surrendered only 15 earned runs. Bronder was selected to the All-League Second Team and was named team Co-MVP.

Voted to the All-Area First Team as a sophomore and junior by the Danbury News Times, Cody was honored as the League II-A Pitcher of the Year for Section I as a senior. He owns a .365 batting average and was selected to play in the Empire State Games the last two years.

GONZALEZ ANNOUNCES SIGNING OF MIHAI ENESCU

RIVERDALE, NY - Head men's basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez announced today that 7-0 230-lb. center Mihai Enescu (Ploiesti, Romania/Mihai Viteazul) will attend Manhattan College and play basketball beginning in the Fall of 2002. In addition, Gonzalez announced that recruit Oktay Yilmaz (Istanbul, Turkey/Cavusoglu) will attend Winchendon Prep School in Massachusetts this fall to work on his academics and his English for one year.

Enescu averaged 18 points and 11.2 rebounds per game on the Vega Soced Club Team. In addition, Enescu led the Romanian team to a second place finish at the Romanian National Championships in Agiest, Romania and won a Slam Dunk Contest in 2000.

"We are very excited about this recent development because Mihai is our first seven-footer at Manhattan," said Gonzalez. "He is a full qualifier and is ready to step right in this year." Enescu is currently enrolled in summer classes at Manhattan.

Yilmaz is a 6-8 center who won three High School Championships at Cavusoglu High School. In 1999-00, Yilmaz was a member of the Junior National Team in Macedonia, and played on the runner-up World High School Championship Team. Two years ago, Yilmaz was a member of the Under-22 National Team. Last year, as a member of Efes Pilsen, Yilmaz averaged 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

Enescu will join Kenny Minor (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar/Winchendon Prep (MA)), Jason Wingate (New York, NY/Rice), Mike Konovelchick (Litchfield, NH/Alvirne/New Hampton Prep) as Gonzalez's recruits for the 2002-03 season.

Clarkstown South graduate grabs reins of football program
By John Humenn, The Journal News

Mike Scarpelli took somewhat of a circuitous route, but now he feels like he's finally back where he belongs.

Scarpelli, a 1992 graduate of Clarkstown South, has returned to South as the head football coach.

Scarpelli, 28, of Nanuet, replaces Tom Eisele, who resigned after one year as head coach, Clarkstown Central School District athletic director Bob Smalt said. Scarpelli served as an assistant coach at Tappan Zee the past two years and was the head coach at Horace Mann for three years beginning in 1997.

"It's great to be back and be a part of South again," Scarpelli said. "It's kind of like having peace of mind. I was a coach at so many different places and it was great, but there was always something missing. You always want to come back to your high school."

Scarpelli, who was a member of both the football and track teams while at South, recently was hired as a physical education teacher in the high school.

"It's a big advantage to be in the school because you're hands-on with all the kids, especially in phys ed because you see every kid in the school," said Scarpelli, a 1996 graduate of Manhattan College who is working on his master's degree at Hofstra.

Scarpelli has been working hard at coaching for quite a while, attending four or five clinics a year for about 10 years. One of the most important things he's learned is to keep everything simple.

"It's not about having a million plays or reinventing the wheel," Scarpelli said. "Everybody knows what everybody else runs. It's a matter of putting your kids in position to be successful. You may know the West Coast offense, but your kids have to know it, too. If you can do a couple of things well, you can be successful."

Scarpelli already has started and has his players with him at a football camp at Pace University this week.

"We talk about the minimum of what other teams are doing," Scarpelli said. "You take the more successful teams, the Nanuets, the North Rocklands and the Nyacks, and this is what they do. If you want to compete at that level, this is what you have to do."

Clarkstown South athletic director Vince Louther said he is looking forward to the upcoming season with Scarpelli as the Vikings' coach.

"We're very excited to have him on board," Louther said. "In just a couple of months on the job, he's added quite a few new things to give things a different twist and try to motivate kids to play football."

Dear John,

What a pleasant surprise to receive your heartfelt offer to include me in your alumni community.  I gladly accept.  Please send Jasper Jottings and all subsequent messages to <privacy invoked>.

I would subscribe to your weekly "publication" regardless, but I happen to be job hunting at the moment.  After several years as a full time mom, I am eager to reestablish my career.  (I do have seven years of post collegiate work experience.)  Do you include resumes in your newsletter?

Well, I have "annoyed" only a few. But, I have just a little under a 1,000 weekly readers. On a basically zero budget.

> I gladly accept.  Please send Jasper Jottings

Done. I am hiatus while I do a full week business trip to London. (it was just impossible to do it from overseas. I've done jottings on the road in the US before but overseas was just too much of a challenge.)

> I happen to be job hunting at the moment.

Perfect. I sometimes counsel fat old white men like myself who have the deer in the headlights look from a surprise layoff. I have taken three golden handshakes, been to the "turkey farm", and lived to tell about it. I'd be glad to help in any way I can. We even have a few Jaspers who are headhunters. Err, ... executive recruiters. In addition at the last NYC alumni club meeting someone mentioned that they too were reentering from motherhood. If I can remember the name maybe you and she should "team up". It's easier with a "wolf pack".

>Do you include resumes in your newsletter?

Yup. I haven't heard any great success stories but every one seems to find something, or what they want. So spruce it up, check it over, and ship it in. (Remember the great programming axiom: You never find the last bug. So to, you never find the last typo.)

Regarding the E-Mail from Dawn Marie:

It is an enormous joy to me to read this passionate message from Dawn Marie!

1. She is a graduate from 1989, making her a "thirtysomethingish" who is rational. Shame on me for imagining that "thirtysomethingish" persons are all "ditzes".

2. The "a...h....s" she alludes to are kinda the narrow minded folks that pepper our environment. For reference, I'm not a "libertarian" and from time to time find your assessments undesirable, but you do it so well and thus make me think in another plane...

Thanks to you for being here and I'm grateful that Dawn Marie is there!

Joe Zagursky, Class of 60

[JR: <1> I was impressed with her most supportive message. <2> I’m just trying to keep us all “young”. At least in thought! Sometimes stuff just aggravates me and this gives me a chance to pop off. Just like Plato’s cave, where we daily - in the ignorance of youth – solved all the world’s problems daily. ;-)  Now we know the “solutions”, especially by the government, are always worse than the disease. The War on Poverty, Drugs, Illiteracy, White Collar Crime, The War on <Filll In The Blank>, speed limits, rent control. I think Milton Friedman said it best when he said something like any government solution delivers the worst opposite thing you can imagine. <3> The Dawn’s and other submitters like yourself deserve all the credit. I’m just a glorified Xerox machine, adding a little pepper to the mix to keep it lively, IMHO. Thanks go to all the correspondents.]

Hello Mr. Reinke,

I’m sorry for the delay in this email; Janine and I have been swamped with work for the last week or so. However, we haven’t forgotten about you and all the ideas and concerns we shared.

Our system problems include finding compatible Macintosh adobe Pdf creature, and the acquiring of proper technological support for our MacIntosh's within our budget limitations. Many smaller issues exist with our systems but we haven’t the technological support or knowledge to pin point a solution. Any help with the above issues would be greatly appreciated.

Also, Janine and I have been contemplating some of your needs and wants in terms of the Jasper Jottings, and if you are willing we would like to ask one of our Section Coordinators to begin apprenticing under you and eventually become an access point of information. If so let me know ASAP because we have already chosen a person.

In addition whenever possible may we please receive as many as possible Jasper Jotter archives so we can implement this information into the prior mentioned Jasper Jotter Quadrangle Section Coordinator training. If you have any questions or concern please don’t hesitate to email us at manhattanquad@yahoo.com

Thank you,

Keisha M. Brown

[JR: I have reached out to the Quad people on the campus. We both have problems; we both have experiences; we both have resources. I’m interested in reaching the future alums to read jottings. We think they are interested in learning more about alums. Networking targets for one; opportunities for another. This is my first step in linking us with them. Your thoughts?]

No need for the sorrow. I've been in London for ten days. And Jottings has been on hiatus.

By copy, I am going to ask Walter Matystic and Janice Melino, if they have any ideas on how to get you some help. I have every confidence that these issues will not survive long after they take a look.

>if you are willing we would like to ask one of our Section
> Coordinators to begin apprenticing under you

Sure, what would be the person's objectives. Learning how I do what I do? Taking the archives and making something out of them? Web-i-zing the Quad? I learned early in my career, you have to have well defined goals to prevent misunderstandings.

>If so let me know ASAP because we have already chosen a person.

Let's chat by phone. Maybe the three of you can be my guests at lunch downtown, nothing fancy, and we can kick around the ideas.

>In addition whenever possible may we please receive as many

As I told you the old Jottings, I can burn on a CD, but to be faithful to my readership, I need to know exactly what you intend to do with them and can't give you the email addresses. With those two caveats you can have what you want.

>Thank you, Keisha M. Brown Editor in Chief

No, thank you, this should be "fun".

A Final Thought

http://www.newsmax.com/showinsidecover.shtml?a=2002/6/3/133103

<snip>

The clincher for studio execs is this figure: 44.3 percent of those polled said they might not patronize a movie featuring a star whose politics they don't like.

The HR e-poll identified Alec Baldwin as one of the top five offenders disliked for his political views. Just two months ago, the outspoken liberal compared Bush's election victory to the 9-11 disaster.

Perhaps not coincidentally, choice roles for Baldwin seem to be few and far between of late.

<snip>

What a good idea! Starting now, I won't patronize celebs who offend me. So, first on my list is: "Hanoi Jane", followed by "Leave the country" Baldwin. Any other nominations?

And that’s the last word.
