I have put some of the old issues on  http://ferdinand_reinke.tripod.com/ for those of you who are interested. I’ll try to get them all up there.

Is there any interest in a CDROM of all the Jottings? I have no idea what that will entail, cost, or such. I am just wondering if there is any interest in it. Like an annual end of year compilation.

ALL BOILER PLATE is at the end.

Signing off for this week.

Once again the WTC is in the headlines again. The last time it was bombed, I was there a few hours before it. This time, I was there a day before. Our prayers should go out to those who died there. When the prayers are done, then we need to reflect on our role in world. When we stick our nose into other people’s business, we have to expect that trouble will follow us home.

“Our foreign policy has been insane for decades. It was only a matter of time until Americans would have to suffer personally for it. It is a terrible tragedy of life that the innocent so often have to suffer for the sins of the guilty. When will we learn that we can't allow our politicians to bully the world without someone bullying back eventually?”

- 2000 Libertarian Party presidential candidate Harry Browne

So, when the Cole was bombed, we did nothing. We now have to hand someone a bloody nose or risk be attacked by others. Once we do that, then we have to think about what the true American interests are. In my mind, those are very few and far between. Now we know what our one friend in the region, Israel, has been facing. I hope all our fellow Jaspers, and their families and friends, are safe. I don’t believe we will be untouched, but I am hoping.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

RICHARD GABRIEL

The loss of a leg in Vietnam never slowed Richard Gabriel when it came to playing with his kids.

``He played every single sport with all of his kids, all the time,'' said his daughter, Patricia Gabriel.

Gabriel, 54, wore a prosthetic limb, but carried himself in such a way that people would say ``I had no idea your father had one leg,'' she said. ``He waterskied with one leg, played golf, touch football in the back yard.''

The father of five visited his children's schools to talk about physical disability without seeming disabled, she said.

Gabriel, 54, a Marine lieutenant who received the Purple Heart for Vietnam wounds, died aboard Flight 77.

A native New Yorker, Gabriel was class valedictorian at Manhattan College, had a masters degree in business administration from Columbia University and worked for General Foods and other corporations before launching his own firm, Stratin Consulting.

He lived in Great Falls, Va., and was flying to Australia via Los Angeles on business when hijackers crashed his plane into the Pentagon.

MAAC OFFICE POSTPONES INTERCOLLEGIATE PLAY THROUGH SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 16

No Makeup Date Has Been Announced for Manhattan Contests

EDISON, N.J. - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Office announced today that all intercollegiate athletic competition through Sunday, September 16, 2001, involving all MAAC member institutions will be postponed in the wake of yesterday's terrorist attacks.

"While there is a desire within the MAAC membership to retun to a sense of normalcy as soon as possible, there is also an awareness that many MAAC alumni, students and their families have been directly impacted by the terrorist attacks of September 11," said MAAC Commissioner Richard J. Ensor. "Given the situation the MAAC believes postponement of its athletic contests is appropriate.

"The decision also took into account some other factors, including the difficulty of travel in the northeast region of the country, particularly the New York City Greater Metropolitan Region, and the safety of our student-athletes, coaches and fans."

Good Morning, John:

            1. Libertarians must have a sense of humor, else they would run around screaming at the mess the other parties have made of my country !

            2. During the tail end of the Second War, I could shoot back at those who were shooting at me. In the classroom, the bleeding hearts frown on such an action. (By the way, have you seen the article in the Sunday Post re the mayoral primaries detailing the more than 100 “incidents” of violence in Teddy Roosevelt HS, right across the street from F.U. and about 5 blocks from where I grew up in The Bronx ?)

            3. I am glad I am retired from the BoE. I think I would be in jail or dead if some punk or group of punks assaulted me. I sure as heck would not be turning any cheek ! Keep up the tremendous work, John. Sunday night…okay, Monday morning is a very bright spot on the PC when JJ rings the bell. FNS sends

[JR: <1> In light of the WTC, and everyone wanting to bomb “someone”, I hope the people who have “seen the elephant” can talk some sense into people. We have to defend ourselves but it is not at all like Pearl Harbor. <2> At least we knew where the “enemy” was; now they could be next door. <3> Well, Jottings just got a little harder since I have lost one of my mechanized sources.]

John,

I've enjoyed JJ for the past year.  My friend (and former roomie @ MC, Peter Rader) has been forwarding it to me.  Your Libertarian views are refreshing and I find most of them appealing.  I remember the expression "laissez-faire" from former times and wonder what has happened to it.  I'm afraid socialism is politically correct among the (uninformed)general populace and we're destined for it.  The informed (politicians) know it's a good way to buy votes with someone else footing the bill.  Little do they know.

Please sign me up.

[JR: Done. Sorry but this came in over at Yahoo as opposed to bigfoot or alum.manhattan.edu so I was a little delayed.]

We need to use this disaster as a wake up call to worse things that can happen nuclear, chemical, or bio weapons. Let’s make sure that we don’t “fight the last war”. It’s unlikely that we will see planes used as weapons again. Our enemy is outthinking us.]

A Final Thought

"The per-pupil cost of public schools averages $6,000, compared with $3,100 for private schools. In other words, all else being equal, we could abolish all public schools and the taxes that support them tomorrow, let the market replace them with private schools, and cut the total cost of education by nearly half. Why isn't this done? The short answer is that there are many people on the payroll of the education bureaucracy who would be unhappy."

 --Llewellyn H. Rockwell,Jr.

My point exactly. We don’t treat education with as much importance as McDonalds. If we did, we’d turn it over to the private sector who would do a better job at a lower cost. Then, maybe we could address the reason why the cost of education is a taxpayer expense.

         THE UNITED STATES

This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars! into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.  You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon! Not once, but several times -- and safely home again.  You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at.

Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded.  They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.  When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.  Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."
