9/21-23 Weekend - Businessmen's Retreat
Joe Gunn ’73 914-693-7542
Kevin Dolan ’68 718-432-8714
ALL BOILER PLATE is at the end.
Signing off for this week.
One of the benefits of having some time off is I get to
catch up on my reading. (As you can tell from the length of these soliloquies
prior to “retirement” and after it.) As a Libertarian, I am fan of Austrian
Economics. This was overlooked in my Manhattan College course. We were taught
that JMKeynes’ economics was economics. But that is just so not true. As we go
thru this current economic downturn, Ludwig von Mises predicted in Human Action
that the boom / bust cycle was unavoidable caused by the mistakes in how the
government manipulates the economy. By allowing the government and specifically
the Fed to “set” interest rates, permits mistakes into market action and
business calculations. Their web site says things far more eloquently than I
can. http://www.mises.org/default.asp Now we have to change our fundamental
understanding of economics. It’s no longer labor and capital. Watching the
local zoning board on “local cable”, I have learned that there is now a new
economic force – regulation. If I could give the politicians a little advice,
then it would be cut the regularion and return to the gold standard. We need to
take the power out of the politician’s hands and return it to the people. It’ll
never happen without a fight.
Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in
any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

The Manhattan College - Class of 1978 - Overlook Reunion page is
dedicated to a group of guys and their friends who lived in The Overlook
Appartments during their Junior and Senior years at Manhattan College.
Despite moving and living in various
parts of the country the group has managed to stay in touch throughout the
years. The annual St. Patrick's Day
reunion in mid-town Manhattan has been popular as well a yearly trip to see
baseball games at one of the cities of Major League Baseball.

Kevin Wiseman.
In January of this year (2001) we
lost a cherished friend, Kevin Wiseman.
Kevin was a focal point of the group and one of the reasons we have
managed to stay together.
In memory of Kevin, a "Kevin
Wiseman" Photo Album has been set up so you can post and share pictures
that you have of Kevin. There are also
many pictures of Kevin in the Reunion photo albums, especially the Baltimore
and Atlanta albums.
Also, on the Message Board, you can
post your stories, expereinces, and thoughts about Kevin. It would be nice to have a nice collection
of postings that we could print so years from now Kevin's children can have
something to read and learn about their dad.
Finally a special Web page focusing
on Kevin will be created within this community.

John,
Just passing on the sad news that my
brother Henry W. Theisen, class of '61, Fordham Law '66 succumbed to a long
fight with Leukemia (AML) on August 8, 2001.
He leaves behind a legacy of a great law career and a life of community
service to Ithaca, New York. His
obituary in the August 11, 2001 issue of The Ithaca Journal lists a vast array
of accomplishments too numerous to list here.
Chuck Theisen '57
[JR: Please accept my condolences. I
reported this in the last issue based on an email from your brother’s email
address. So “he” “scooped” you on the report. I didn’t know him but he must
have planned that. I can’t imagine it happening any other way.]

HEADLINE: Lyons leaving UNM
DATELINE: ALBUQUERQUE
New Mexico assistant men's
basketball coach Travis Lyons has left to accept an assistant coaching job at
Manhattan College, his alma mater, Coach Fran Fraschilla said.
Lyons, 24, will be one of
Manhattan's two off-campus recruiters, a job he was not allowed to do as New
Mexico's third assistant coach last season. NCAA rules allow only the head
coach and two assistants to recruit away from school grounds.
"When you have a chance to get
on the road and recruit at your alma mater, it's too good an opportunity to
pass up," Fraschilla said Monday.
Lyons came to New Mexico from
Manhattan and served as a Lobos student manager while taking graduate classes
during the 1999-2000 season. He was promoted to assistant when Troy Weaver
left for Syracuse.
Lyons played for Fraschilla at
Manhattan and was all-conference, then played professionally in Europe before
coming to UNM.
Fraschilla said there is no rush to
fill Lyons's position. Joe Dooley and Darren Savino are the other assistant
coaches.

WHY HE'S INVOLVED
"I had a very, very dear friend

with about 10 walkers from Con Ed and last year it grew to about a hundred.

COMMITMENT

MEN’S BASKETBALL PROMOTES BRAMUCCI TO FIRST ASSISTANT
Travis Lyons ’98 and Stephen Masiello Hired as Second and Third Assistants
RIVERDALE, NY - Manhattan College
men’s basketball Head Coach Bobby Gonzalez announced the promotion of Mike
Bramucci to the first assistant coach position Monday as well as the hiring of
Travis Lyons ’98 and Stephen Masiello as second and third assistants, respectively.
Bramucci started as Gonzalez’s third
assistant when Gonzalez took over the helm at Manhattan in 1999 and was
promoted to second assistant last year.
A 1990 graduate of Ramapo College, Bramucci’s duties will include
serving as recruiting and scheduling coordinator, on-court coaching,
individual instruction with the forwards, strength and conditioning, and
scouting of opponents.
“Mike has done great work over the
past two seasons,” commented Coach Gonzalez.
“I’ve felt very comfortable relying on him as a recruiter and opponent
scout, and I know he will continue to excel in his expanded role as first
assistant.”
Joining Bramucci on the coaching
staff will be two outstanding assistant coaches, Travis Lyons ’98 and Steve
Masiello. Lyons has been working with
former Manhattan Head Coach Fran Fraschilla at the University of New Mexico
for the past two years. A graduate of
DeMatha High School, Lyons was an outstanding scorer and rebounder for the
Jaspers in the mid-1990’s.
Masiello graduated from the
University of Kentucky in 2000 where he played for both Rick Pitino and Tubby
Smith. While there, he was part of a
National Championship team and went to the Final Four twice. Last year, he served as the administrative
assistant at Tulane. Masiello roots,
however, are in the greater New York area as he grew up in White Plains and
graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School.
“I’m very excited to have both
Travis and Steve join the Jaspers staff,” commented Coach Gonzalez. “Besides being a great coach, Travis will
give us a link with the storied past of Jasper basketball, and Steve brings
the ability to relate to the players and share with them what it takes to be a
collegiate champion. These two are
definitely going to help us get better.”

Hi Herb,
Then this is just perfect for you.
The jasper jottings comes as a plain
old text file in the body of a message. It's not attached, or zipped, or
anything else funky. I tried to accommodate the lowest common denominator of
what people could handle.
In the last message, I had the
invitation followed by the last issue of jasper jottings. If you could read
that, (and I can't guess why you could not), then you'll be able to read every
weekly issue. As a matter of fact, while I compose the weekly message in WORD,
I deliberately copy it into NOTEPAD, so that all the funky stuff that word
managed to do to plain text doesn't come across. It's an extra step and it
makes extra work because the TAB character messes up the spacing of the by
class and by name table but it makes it possible for WebTV-ers and others to
read it without problem. I have put a lot of work into ensuring that
"techie stuff" doesn't interfere with communicating with the Arts
guys. ;-)
If you'd like try the next issue and
if you have a problem call me and we can chat or just tell me and I'll stop.
Your call.

get on the mailing list for the Jasper Jottings that you send out. If this is
possible thank you very much.

Hi Elizabeth,
I'd be glad to put you on the list.
I was curious about "The researcher" part. I hope there's lots of
research going on at MC. ;-) Have you
run into Barbara Higgins? I know she does a lot of bio prep for the powers
that be there. Are you an MC alum?
Hope my modest effort helps you,
John

her, I do go to her for a lot of info. Yes I am an alum, graduated in 1998
with a degree in Psych.

Good Morning, John:
1. I just returned from a fantastic vacation in Canada and
Alaska...More on that anon, when I am more awake.
2. What is this "Old Codger" stuff? Just because
I fought for my country in WWII, was graduated from MC in 1951, served in the
Naval Reserve for 20 years and will be 74 in October does not make me a
'codger'. I am reasonably intelligent, quite well-read and maintain my own
business, traveling around the US and the UK, buying and selling Toy Soldiers.
3. New comment for our fellow graduate from Canada who
called us "loonies"...That is what the Canadians call their $1.00
brass coin...a "Loonie", because it has a bas-relief Loon on the obverse.
(P.S. His govt. does do one thing which might well be copied in the lower
48...instead of Cree, Sioux, Ottawa, Ojibway, etc., these peoples are referred
to as "aboriginals"!)
4. New subject...re: the "Cockpit of Europe", as
it was called several centuries ago...if there are ethnic Albanians in
Macedonia, after the UN collects their guns, why don't they collect these poor
displaced ethnic Albanians and return them to Albania ? Then, they could
return the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo to Albania, the ethnic Albanians in
Serbia to Albania, and then seal the border and let them butcher each other
instead of butchering Christians. Or is this too simple an idea for the
one-worlders to contemplate or understand? (After all, Albania has only been
in existence since 1913).

Military Miniatures
[JR: <1> Well I am jealous.
Alaska is my “last” state. And supposed to be the most impressive. <2>
You should know by now that when most liberals and some conservatives don’t
have an intellectual leg to stand on they call names and eventually leave. “A
republic, if you can keep it” comes to mind. In the hand out society, we are
in the minority. Now about a grown man playing with toy soldiers? ;-)
<3> At least the “loonies” are not approximately the same size as
another coin. I prefer my gold coins to all these other forms of paper trash.
Where will we be when the Japanese get tired of sending us Toyotas in exchange
for pretty pieces of paper. Up the proverbial creek that’s where. <4> I
think we should be arming people not disarming them. It’s amazing that when no
one is defenseless how things will settle down. If we would just mind our own
business, then the world would be a much quieter place. Won’t be long before
we see a rise in terrorism on our own soil. Israel is good example of what one
person, who is willing to die, can do in terms of killing. <5> Glad to
hear from a “young” fellow.]

[JR: Done. Thanks for the kind
words. JJ takes about 15 hours a week to collect, clean, and format. Not
counting the opinions which make it “fun”. I am always glad when people enjoy
it. My small way to repay all the others who made my Jasper experience.]

[JR: Done. With the standard
referral bonus for Phiip. Yup you guess it a free year’s extension to his
Jasper Jotting subscription. And we can designate Mark as our “Jasper Jottings
in country reporter” for Sweden. Now we have TWO international reporters.
Watch out Associated Press.]

Operating Jasper Jottings, the

DISCLAIMER
This effort has NO FORMAL RELATION
to Manhattan College!
This is just my idea and has no
support nor any official relationship with Manhattan College. As an alumni, we
have a special bond with Manhattan College. In order to help the College keep
its records as up to date as possible, the CIC will share such information as
the Alumni office wants. To date, we share the news, any "new
registrations" (i.e., data that differs from the alumni directory), and
anything we find about "lost" jaspers.
QUALIFICATION
You may only subscribe to the list,
only if you have demonstrated a connection to Manhattan College. This may
require providing information about yourself to assert the claim to a
connection. Decisions of the CIC are final. If you do provide such personal
information, such as email, name, address or telephone numbers, we will not
disclose it to anyone except as described here.
CONNECTING
Should you wish to connect to
someone else on the list, you must send in an email to the list requesting the
connection. We will respond to you, so you know we received your request, and
send a BCC (i.e., Blind Carbon Copy) of our response to your target with your
email address visible. Thus by requesting the connection, you are allowing us
to share your email address with another list member. After that it is up to
the other to respond to you. Bear in mind that anything coming to the list or
to me via my reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu address is
assumed to be for publication to the list and you agree to its use as
described.
Should some one wish to connect with
you, you will be sent a BCC (i.e., Blind Carbon Copy) of our response as
described above. It is then your decision about responding.
We want you to be pleased not only
with this service. Your satisfaction, and continued participation, is very
important to all of us.

bad, I'll tone it down.) --- to reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu. Please mark

A Final Thought
http://www.indepen.com/2001/Aug16.01/profit.html
“Freedom of speech and expression,
or any fundamental human liberties, can never be defended solely by words on
paper, what James Madison called "parchment protections." They
require an informed and active populace, which will demand these rights while
simultaneously employing them. This requires that people can find out what's
going on in the world and can organize to do something about it. In other
words, free speech requires free time. Free speech: Use it or lose it.”

Syndicated columnist Bruce Bartlett
writes that Social Security was supposed to be insurance not welfare. "At
a critical moment in time, the United States could have done the right thing
and created a Social Security system that was soundly based and permanently
funded. But then the government could not have used it to redistribute income,
buy votes and make the nation's elderly wards of the state. That was the
ultimate goal all along. Providing retirement income for the aged was just the
way to sell it."
When will “we” see that government
is the problem!
