Dear "Collector-in-chief" John :

This week o/a Aug. 3rd I expect to be forced retired from Agere Systems, after that date please send e-mails to <Privacy invoked>  until further notice. Although I am from the 50's era I continually contemplate the great days when I attended Manhattan College. I truly appreciate the work of the Christian Brothers and the impact they had on my life. I believe you are correct in suggesting to all: "Reflect well on our alma mater..." Thanks for your great service, it should be a BUSINESS that you offer to all schools as a means of staying close to their Alumni. This is a new age and they need to employ technology to accomplish what has been so difficult in the past.

Regards,
Aniceto John Serrone

[JR: <1> I am very to sorry to hear that “forced” stuff. I suspect however that it might work out better than you think. Are you planning to work elsewhere? If so, then feel free to put your resume here.  If not, what are you planning to do to fill in the time. I know personally that when things like this do happen it’s traumatic. Even when they are not completely forced on you. Like when I took an “early out” from the military and was glad to get back to AT&T, it’s still a change. A change I wanted big time. To get back to earning some “real money”. But, I missed leaving my seven good friends behind. Shortly I had lost six of them to moves and changes. I have probably had seven changes in employers; none of them without varying degrees of regret. In retrospect, all were for the best. I pray you will see your’s in the same light. <2> Made the change. <3> Yup, the days at MC were great. I am sorry I didn’t realize it at the time. I knew they were good but like a foolish youth I didn’t realize how great. But, you can’t go back and you can’t change it. The “couldas, wouldas, and shouldas” will kill you. They are only lessons to help us going forward. <5> We were given a great boon and so have an obligation to reflect it well. If not with public achievement, then with private charity. <6> WRT to this service as a business, it is truly a labor of love. What I need to figure out is how to interest the college into using it. I only started it to “occupy the space” until they could get organized. ;-)  <7> This “connectedness” is one thing the Ivyies and Duke do very well. I have told here before how when I worked with a Dukie, he had three alumni cells he belonged to: by year, by discipline, and by first LETTER of his last name. He was “guaranteed” at least NINE communications a week – USMail notes, calls, or visits – no email in those days. They used the Communist Party concept of CELLS to organize and I was stunned how connected they were. That’s what I’d like to see. My puny effort has reached only a 1,000 of the ~8,000 known email addresses and of the ~35,000 alums. So I know the limits that I have reached. BUT, perhaps I can inspire someone to pick up the “baton” and go further. We need each reader to reach out to those alumns we don’t know: in our geography; in our organizations; even with the same last letter of our name, and build some “bridges”. What is the worst that can happen, they think we are crazy and ignore us? <9> Thanks for an inspiring email that makes me want to try harder.]

Nah, I just sent it twice. I didn't think the first one "took" because it didn't come through to my yahoo address or back to bigfoot. It looks like the ISP mail processor was on "rest period". Arghh. Sorry but that's what you get for hiring a low cost collector in chief ;-)

It was good to hear from Tony Sartorio. I did not know him at Manhatan, but had some good times with him at Pepsi. We have both moved on. I am at Campbell Soup in Camden, NJ, and there are not too many Jaspers here. Only one that I know of - John Marynowski a mechanical engineer. I enjoy the updates, especially when I read about old friends.

Ray Carroll BE '81

[JR: MCOLDB has 3 at “CAMPBELL SOUP”: you Carroll, Raymond H. (1981); O'Brien, Daniel L. (1974); Rowland, Anthony G. (1977) but not Marynowski, John (1977). Now as the “senior” Jasper On Deck go find them. ;-)   In the Navy, “George” jobs were all the yucky tasks that were given to the new man, like the essential task of inventorying the mess trays. Reference email number one, let’s create a “jaspers@campbellsoup” with you and build from there. Should you or any of you mission impossible force be captured, the CIC will disavow any knowledge of your actions. On the plus side, you can offer free subscriptions to Jasper Jottings.]

John,

Thank you for being there! I am not a libertarian but I'm beginning to wonder why not....

Your reasoning and sense of humor are very good and your principles and values are excellent!

I've noticed that certain "Liberals" seem to feel "knee jerk" anger about any thoughts that are contrary to their conceptions or they display an arrogance about the limited "intelligence" of the "opposition". It appears they then either scold one for disagreeing or they walk away from a discussion with their noses up in the air...

I hope this isn't true about "conservatives".

Let's pray that God blesses all that do this and helps them open their minds...

From a "non-Libertarian",
Joe Zagursky Class of '60E

[JR: Why not? True libertarians believe in the non-aggression principle. So, I just want to live and let live. Liberals -- bless their closed little minds, and conservative – bless their arrogance of knowing what’s best for me, are all welcome to the marketplace of ideas. Those that leave when ideas offend them are demonstrating the weakness of their ideas. IMHO. We are all God’s children and have to be treated respectfully no matter how childish they seam. I am sure I look pig-headed (at best) to them. Take the World's Smallest Political Quiz to find your political identity. (http://www.lp.org/quiz/) You might be surprised at where you really are. I was.]

Dear John,

I have been meaning to write you this letter for almost a year now, to thank you for your hard work in keeping this jasper jotting list put together.  I look forward to reading the emails every week to see what other Jaspers are up to.  I am a 1996 graduate in Mechanical Engineering, and I have just celebrated my fifth year at Syska and Hennessy, a consulting engineering company in  NYC. I met my husband John Huvane '92 (BS Civil), while at Manhattan College.

On August 19th, 2000, John and I were married at the chapel at  Manhattan College. As special as our wedding day was, John and I were very blessed to be married by John's uncle, Father James Huvane ---- yet another alumni from Manhattan College '56 . Father Jim has a very unique story, the day after he received his business degree, he went into the New York City Police department and served the city for 36 years.  Upon reaching his retirement, he was accepted into the Dunwoodie seminary to serve the people of the New York Archdiocese.  On December 18, 1998, he was ordained, Father James Huvane, and was stationed to Regina Coeli in Hyde Park, New York.

I am very sad to say that Father Jim passed away last week, July 18, 2001, after a second bout with cancer.  It was amazing to see how many people he touched in Hyde Park in the two years that he served there, or the many cops that he worked with while he stationed at the 50 precinct in the Bronx.  His funeral mass was a beautiful celebration with over 60 priests celebrating, including Cardinal Egan. Uncle Jim's story can be viewed at http://www.nypdholyname.com/frhuvane.htm

John and I will truly miss our Uncle.

P.S. Please change my email address from <Privacy invoked> to <Privacy invoked>.  Thanks

[JR: Thanks for you kind words and a great update. Every time I clip and transport obit, I just know there is a great underlying story. In some cases, it seems like a waste or tragedy but when the real story surfaces one can see how it touches people. I made the address change. Keep in touch.]

Dear John:

            1. A canadian calling anything else “loony” reminds me of the story of the flea and the drawbridge. We call the Canadian Navy/Armed Services the “Purple Navy” because they all had to wear the same uniform a few years ago. Their customs is a joke…each official makes up his own interpretation…depending upon the weather or the phases of the moon (?); they waste an inordinate amount of money printing their stamps in 2 languages just to satisfy the losers in the F/I War; I could go on but I think I’ve made my point.

A Final Thought

"We should not have to return to the Nuremburg Code -- established in the wake of the Nazis' human experiments to protect people from being used for research which could cause injury or death -- to know that doing lethal harm to a fellow human, no matter how small, is wrong. Blessings to the pope for reminding Mr. Bush that life is not disposable." --The Washington Times
