Dear Jaspers,

Don't forget:

SOLD OUT?
Monday 8/6 MC Alumni CONSTRUCTION OPEN at the Lake Isle
Country Club Eastchester, New York
   (Ben Benson 718-862-7431 or
Joe Van Etten Event Chairman 212-719-5100)

Monday 9/17 James Keating O'Neill Golf Classic
    (www.jkogolf.org -- that's ORG not COM).

ALL BOILER PLATE is at the end.

Signing off for this week.

Having taken a “spear” last week about not understanding that “taxes are what we pay for living in a civilized society”, can we all agree that sports stadiums built with public money are not quite essential to that “civilized society”? When politicians take taxes, (money extracted from our daily efforts by force), to subsidize boondoggles like stadiums, then I think some one is kidding someone. I think we should have a Federal Law, or maybe 50 state laws, (now this is a rarity), that prohibits any government involvement in such projects. If I can’t have the separation of church and state,  or education and state,  or retirement and state, maybe I could have the separation of things like stadiums and state?

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

"Collector-in-chief" John

Dear John,

I hope the job search is going well. It must be difficult to continue to produce Jasper Jottings while devoting the necessary time to your search. We appreciate your efforts.

This week there have been three Jaspers listed in the NY Times Obits. Today, 7/19/01 on page B9 the following Obit appears: "Huvane, Rev. James A., formerly of the Bronx, July 18, 2001. Beloved brother of John Huvane and wife Veronica, beloved uncle of 3 nephews. Calling hours 2-4 & 6-9 PM, Thurs and 2-5 PM Fri, at Regina Coeli Church, Rte 9, Hyde Park, NY. A Mass of Eucharist, 7:30 PM Fri. and a Mass of Christian Burial 9:30 AM. Sat. with Edward Cardinal Egan officiating at Regina Coeli Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to Regina Coeli School, 2 Harvey Street, Hyde Park, NY  12538.  Burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.  Sweet's Funeral Home, Hyde Park."

Fr. James was a 1956 Graduate of the School of Business and retired as  a Sergeant in the New York City Police Department having last served in the 50th Precent, the Precent that serves the College.

On Monday, 7/16/01, at page B7 there was an Obit for Robert F. Smith, Class of 1933, and on Tuesday. 7/17/01, at page B7 there was an Obit for Eugene William McGrane a 1946 Graduate of the School of Business. If you need me to key these for you please let me know, but I thought you might have picked them up from the net.

Keep up the good work, and good luck with your search.
                              Best,
                                Mike McEneney, Esq. '53 BBA

[JR: As always thanks for the good wishes and kind thoughts. Jottings is “filling in” the slow market time. I’m in no particular rush but sometimes wonder if this market will break before I do. Any way I can always rely on my Jasper Jottings subscription income. ;-)  I caught McGrane but I need your “intelligent search engine” to catch the ones that don’t mention Manhattan College.]

HEADLINE: WALSH MAKES HISTORY
BYLINE: LENN ROBBINS

Each time Billy Walsh placed a phone call regarding the vacant Manhattan College men's soccer coaching position, the recipient was left somewhat dumbfounded.

Walsh, a starting midfielder for the MetroStars who scored a goal in yesterday's 2-1 win over D.C. United at Giants Stadium, is a walking, talking, playing and coaching ambassador for soccer, telephoned Manhattan AD Bob Byrnes.

"At first, I was kind of quizzical," said Byrnes. "It seemed kind of a goofy situation for a professional player to want to take on coaching, too."

Walsh then called his former MetroStar teammate, goalie Mike Ammann, who now plays for D.C. United and served as Walsh's assistant coach at Chatham High the last two years.

"I was in California when he called and I thought he was kidding," said Amman.

Byrnes was sold on Walsh after a second interview. He knew of Walsh's now famous Walsh Cup 5-on-5 soccer tournament held in the family backyard for the last 10 years. He learned that Walsh and Amman had led Chatham High to the New Jersey Group II title in 1999 and the semifinals in 2000.

Walsh convinced Byrnes that the MSL schedule wouldn't conflict with his responsibilities as Manhattan's coach. He told Byrnes there was no reason that Manhattan, which staggered to a 3-13-1 record last season, couldn't win the MAAC and go to the NCAA Tournament next season. Walsh is believed to be the first active male pro athlete to coach an NCAA Division I team.

"Coaching soccer isn't that hard," said Walsh. "You give the kids a philosophy and let them play. The key is getting good players."

Walsh, who was born and raised in Chatham, certainly knows the top New Jersey soccer players, but said he'll recruit the nation to get good players.

Frankly the reason for withdrawing from the listserve is the marked conservative nature of the editorials that accompany the news.  I don’t have the time to debate these issues and, with all of the e-mail I have coming in, I simply don’t want to read these statements any more.

Mr. Reinke,

I don't want my name associated, in any way, with the loony opinions expressed in the last news letter. For one thing, taxes are what one pays for a civilized society. Please remove my name from the mailing list.

Jeremiah F. Hayes

[JR: Dear Jasper Hayes,<1> Well, it would take some one in Canada to know about "loony". Just kidding. Isn't that what the call one of the currency units up there, i.e., a loon?  Name calling and worrying about "guilt-by-association" does seem to be a common liberal and conservative reaction to critical reasoning applied to the theoretical underpinnings of a society from libertarians. <2> To a certain extent I agree. BUT, when the level of taxation is used to force people to support immoral activities, AND the form of the taxes is unequal, THEN government is no longer fulfilling it's end of the bargain. Government is the only human activity that is allowed to use force to impose it's will. The Found Fathers, in the spirit of the true liberal, recognized that government had to be kept small and very limited because it alone has the power, if left unrestrained, to enslave and kill its citizens. <3> Done. Sorry to see you leave. But, good luck and God bless.]

Hi Chris,

Where is "Jasper Basketball"? Have you thought about what you are going to try to accomplish? I just started and it kind of grew. I probably should have been more focused and developed some different solutions. Data maintenance tends to be a huge "time hole" (i.e., adds, changes, and deletes).

I can't give you the thousand or so email addresses I have, that would be going back on my promise. But, I can give you access, by publishing anything that you want in Jottings. We can cross post or just cross publicize each other.  Do you want to start by being the "sports editor" on jottings?

I noticed that you gave what appears to be a corporate email address. I would recommend against that. As an ex-corporate security guy, I can give you a slew of reasons not to direct your private email  into a corporate email system. It could get you fired in the future. If you need an alternative use a free email from yahoo. I have a about a dozen setup around for various purposes.

"Rebuilding support" may be a misnomer. I think the support is there but no one taps into it. When I talk to individual Jaspers the espirit de corps is not there like I hear from the Ivies what they do.

Let me know what you'd like.

John

Hello John,

Had a mini Jasper reunion graciously hosted in NJ by Bob and Kathy Cardone (Bob Cardone '84 BE).  It was great to see old friends and rooming buddies.  Many thanks to Frank Russolello ('84 BS) and his wife Toni for driving down from Poughkeepsie!  A shout out to all Stanners too - Frank and I go back to Archbishop Molloy HS - seemingly lifetimes ago!  Great always to share some laughs with Bob Esposito ('84 BE), who wins the Dick Clark award for never appearing to look older, and Lucio Pimenta ('84 BE) and his wife Fran.  We enjoyed Lucio's synchronized cannon balls into the pool with Bob C.  For a few hours on a Saturday in July it was just like 17 years ago.  Of course much as changed - good things like family, homes, careers.  But the sign of a good friendships is one that can pick up right where it left off no matter how much time passes in between.  Message to Rich Bean ('84 BE), who is now a surgeon in the USAF: "We missed you but saved you some ketchup!"  As for us, we have two wonderful pre-school boys who also had a great time.  A big hello to all our Manhattan friends,

Tony Sartorio ('84 BE) and Joanie (O'Leary) Sartorio ('84 BS)

[JR: When I read this, I was really saddened. I thought of all the good times I had and friends I made at Manhattan. Time just erodes the bonds unless we make a concerted effort to pull them back and reinforce them. Thanks for the report. Will this be an annual event? When can I expect all the new subscribers? ;-)  *** 84 – 68 = ???? too many years ago. I must be ready for the O section my self.]

John,

Thanks so much for your comments.  The non-profit sector is terribly important.  Healthcare professionals now widely agree that emotional and social support is as essential as medical care when cancer is diagnosed. But 10 years ago, before Gilda's Club, planned social and emotional support was largely unheard of, particularly outside of California.  Since then, and partly because of the visibility and unique program of this organization, there is much greater awareness of the need. It is also being reflected in research.

I make the point to make another: the role of non-profit organizations in innovation and in pioneering new directions.  We see this in private education, including at Manhattan, and it is at the core of our development. That private money makes a difference!

Gilda's Club depends almost exclusively on gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.  We also benefit tremendously from the services of volunteers.  The basis of our philosophy is the development of communities in which people with cancer, their family members and friends find in one another information and support based on the expertise they have derived from living with cancer. Of course this is all informed by specially trained professional staff who function largely as facilitators and guides.

Our identification with Gilda Radner adds another plus, the ability to constantly inject humor into what otherwise could be a very somber environment.

We welcome men, women and children of all ages with all kinds and at all stages of cancer, whatever the outcome.  And everything at Gilda's Club is free--supported by contributions of cash, time and many different products.

We are obviously somewhat idealistic.  But the Club's benefits are real, and life changing, as the quotes on our Web site and conversation with most any member will reflect.

Thanks again.

Greetings to those of you from the esteemed Bishop DuBois High School. You have erred.  You are looking for a Clarence Michael Jones who graduated from Manhattan in 1969 with a degree in Political Science.  He was also a good friend of mine since we started at Manhattan together and were in the academic and party scene in Harlem.

Please give him my best regards.

COPYRIGHTS

Copyrighted material belongs to their owner. We recognize that this is merely "fair use", appropriate credit is given and any restrictions observed. The CIC asks you to do the same.

All material submitted for posting becomes the sole property of the CIC. All decisions about what is post, and how, are vested solely in the CIC. We'll attempt to honor your wishes to the best of our ability.

A collection copyright is asserted to protect against any misuse of original material.

PRIVACY

Operating Jasper Jottings, the "collector-in-chief", aka CIC, recognizes that every one of us needs privacy. In respect of your privacy, I will protect any information you provide to the best of my ability. No one needs "unsolicited commercial email" aka spam.

The CIC of Jasper Jottings will never sell personal data to outside vendors. Nor do we currently accept advertisements, although that may be a future option.

DISCLAIMER

This effort has NO FORMAL RELATION to Manhattan College!

This is just my idea and has no support nor any official relationship with Manhattan College. As an alumni, we have a special bond with Manhattan College. In order to help the College keep its records as up to date as possible, the CIC will share such information as the Alumni office wants. To date, we share the news, any "new registrations" (i.e., data that differs from the alumni directory), and anything we find about "lost" jaspers.

QUALIFICATION

You may only subscribe to the list, only if you have demonstrated a connection to Manhattan College. This may require providing information about yourself to assert the claim to a connection. Decisions of the CIC are final. If you do provide such personal information, such as email, name, address or telephone numbers, we will not disclose it to anyone except as described here.

CONNECTING

Should you wish to connect to someone else on the list, you must send in an email to the list requesting the connection. We will respond to you, so you know we received your request, and send a BCC (i.e., Blind Carbon Copy) of our response to your target with your email address visible. Thus by requesting the connection, you are allowing us to share your email address with another list member. After that it is up to the other to respond to you. Bear in mind that anything coming to the list or to me via my reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu address is assumed to be for publication to the list and you agree to its use as described.

Should some one wish to connect with you, you will be sent a BCC (i.e., Blind Carbon Copy) of our response as described above. It is then your decision about responding.

We want you to be pleased not only with this service. Your satisfaction, and continued participation, is very important to all of us.

REQUESTING YOUR PARTICIPATION

Please remember this effort depends upon you being a reporter. Email any news about Jaspers, including yourself --- (It is ok to toot your own horn. If you don't, who will? If it sounds too bad, I'll tone it down.) --- to reinkefj@alum.manhattan.edu. Please mark if you DON'T want it distributed AND / OR if you DON'T want me to edit it. Fax can be accommodated but it has to be scheduled. Or, you can USMail it to me at 3 Tyne Court Kendall Park, NJ 08824.

INVITING ANY JASPERS

Feel free to invite other Jaspers to join us by dropping me an email.

PROBLEMS

Report any problems or feel free to give me feedback, by emailing me at reinkef@jalum.manhattan.edu. If you are really enraged, or need to speak to me, call 732-821-5850.

If you don't receive your weekly newsletter, your email may be "bouncing". One or two individual transmissions fail each week and, depending upon how you signed up, I may have no way to track you down, so stay in touch.

How Do You Play?

        "Life is creative.
        It plays itself into existence,
        seeking out new relationships,
        new capacities, new traits.

Life is an experiment to discover what's possible.
As it tinkers with discovery, it creates
        more and more possibilities.
With so much freedom for discovery,
how can life be anything but playful?
